Economic consequences of reproductive performance in dairy cattle

The economic effect of cow-based reproductive management programs with a systematic use of reproductive hormones

Hormone-based reproductive management programs can be beneficial to improve dairy cow's reproductive performance. This study aimed to compare the economic impact of reproductive management programs using systematic hormonal treatments to individual cows with a specific DIM range with a reproductive management program using cow-specific hormonal treatment based on a veterinary diagnosis of ovarian dysfunction during a fertility check. An existing individual cow-based, dynamic, and stochastic bio-economic simulation model, mimicking the production dynamics of a 200 cow-herd in daily time steps, was extended with ovarian dysfunction and fertility inputs. Four hormone-based reproductive management programs were modeled. In the default reproductive management program, reflecting the current reproductive management of Dutch herds, lactating dairy cows are inseminated based on detection of estrus and non-cyclic dairy cows are treated with hormones based on a veterinary diagnosis of ovarian dysfunction during a fertility check. Hormone treatments prescribed by the veterinarian for anestrus, cystic, and sub-estrus cows were an 8-d progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID)-Synch protocol (PRIDsynch), an Ovsynch protocol, and a PGF2⍺ treatment, respectively. The 3 other reproductive management programs reflected systematic hormonal treatments to cows at specific DIM and included a 1) Double-Ovsynch protocol for TAI with nonpregnant cows submitted to a resynchronization protocol (FTAI), 2) Double-Ovsynch protocol for TAI with nonpregnant cows detected in estrus or submitted to a resynchronization protocol (FTAI+ED), and 3) detection of estrus with cows not detected submitted to a PRIDsynch protocol (ED+TAI). All nonpregnant cows were submitted to a resynchronization protocol based on the absence (PRIDsynch) or presence (Ovsynch protocol) of a corpus luteum (CL). The annual mean net economic return (NER) was calculated for all reproductive management programs. Compared with the default reproductive management program, the highest NER was observed for the FTAI+ED reproductive management program with €23,764 higher net revenues, followed by the FTAI and the ED+TAI reproductive management programs with €19,550 and €14,314 higher net revenues, respectively. Overall, systematic hormone-based reproductive management programs gave higher costs due to more hormones administered and higher calving and feed costs due to more pregnant cows. Nevertheless, the additional revenues of milk and calves in the systematic hormone-based reproductive management programs outweighed the total cost. For instance, the FTAI+ED reproductive management program gave €8,953 higher total cost per year compared with the default but with €32,654 higher revenues. In summary, reproductive management programs where hormones were systematically used gave economic advantages over the current default reproductive management program in which hormones are administered to individual cows based on a veterinary diagnosis of ovarian dysfunction during a fertility check.

Identification of candidate SNPs associated with embryo mortality and fertility traits in lactating Holstein cows

Introduction: Targeted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been used in genomic prediction methodologies to enhance the accuracy of associated genetic transmitting abilities in Holstein cows. The objective of this study was to identify and validate SNPs associated with fertility traits impacting early embryo mortality. Methods: The mRNA sequencing data from day 16 normal (n = 9) and embryo mortality (n = 6) conceptuses from lactating multiparous Holstein cows were used to detect SNPs. The selection of specific genes with SNPs as preliminary candidates was based on associations with reproductive and fertility traits. Validation of candidate SNPs and genotype-to-phenotype analyses were conducted in a separate cohort of lactating primiparous Holstein cows (n = 500). After genotyping, candidate SNPs were filtered using a quality control pipeline via PLINK software. Continuous numeric and binary models from reproductive traits were evaluated using the mixed procedure for a generalized linear model-one way ANOVA or logistic regression, respectively. Results: Sixty-nine candidate SNPs were initially identified, but only 23 passed quality control procedures. Ultimately, the study incorporated 466 observations for statistical analysis after excluding animals with missing genotypes or phenotypes. Significant (p <0.05) associations with fertility traits were identified in seven of the 23 SNPs: DSC2 (cows with the A allele were older at first calving); SREBF1 and UBD (cows with the T or G alleles took longer to conceive); DECR1 and FASN (cows with the C allele were less likely to become pregnant at first artificial insemination); SREBF1 and BOLA-DMB (cows with the T allele were less likely to be pregnant at 150 days in milk). It was also determined that two candidate SNPs within the DSC2 gene were tag SNPs. Only DSC2 SNPs had an important allele substitution effect in cows with the G allele, which had a decreased age at first calving by 10 days. Discussion: Candidate SNPs found in this study could be used to develop genetic selection tools to improve fertility traits in dairy production systems.

The presence of Leptospira spp. in the follicular fluid of naturally infected cows affects the overall efficiency of the in vitro embryo production technique

The relationship between Leptospira infection and reproductive failures, as well as the mechanisms that lead to it, has not yet been fully established. It has been hypothesized that the presence of Leptospira spp. in the follicular fluid (FF) could impair the oocyte developmental competence. Thus, the impact of the presence of Leptospira spp. in the FF on in vitro embryo production (IVEP) outcomes was assessed. Dairy cows (n=244) from different farms were subjected to ovum pick-up for cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) collection. After PCR analysis of the FF, cows were retrospectively allocated into either: positive (POS-FF) or negative (NEG-FF) group. Statistical modeling was conducted using the farm, PCR result, and laboratory in which the IVEP was performed as effects. Noteworthy, 26.6% of the animals were positive for Leptospira spp., and 70% of farms had at least one POS-FF cow in the herd. POS-FF cows had a lower number of COCs recovered (22.6 ± 1.2 vs 15.0 ± 2.8, P=0.036), rate of viable COCs (85.6 ± 0.9% vs 78.1 ± 2.8%, P=0.015), number of good-quality COCs (16.0 ± 0.9 vs 9.8 ± 2.1, P=0.026), cleaved embryos (11.9 ± 0.7 vs 7.5 ± 1.5, P=0.032), and blastocysts (7.3 ± 0.4 vs 2.3 ± 0.7, P=0.044) yielded per cow. In conclusion, the presence of Leptospira spp. in the FF of naturally infected cows impaired the amount of COCs recovered, decreasing the overall IVEP efficiency.

Early prediction of oestrus for herd fertility management in cattle and buffaloes - a review

Oestrus is defined as a period when a female animal exhibits characteristic sexual behaviour in the presence of a mature male. Oestrous manifestation in dairy animals is due to the oestrogen (E2) effect on the central nervous system (CNS). It is a critical issue to be considered on a priority basis. Inefficient oestrous detection reduces the fertility status of the herd. The primary and most reliable indicator of oestrus is standing to be mounted by a bull or another female herd mate, signalling receptivity and the pre-ovulatory state in dairy cattle. Oestrous detection is primarily a management challenge requiring skill and vigilance. To improve the efficiency of oestrous detection in dairy cattle, visual observation is one of the best methods if done three times a day; however, heat detection aids, if combined, give better results. However, techniques like using teaser bulls, tail painting, chin ball markers, ultrasound (USG) examination, hormonal analysis and examination of cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) improve oestrous detection efficiency. Moreover, the changes in production systems have reduced the expression of oestrous behaviour among cows, due to higher oestrogen (E2) metabolism. Therefore, automated systems, such as pedometers, accelerometers and acoustic sensors like infrared thermography (IRT) and image processing, have significantly enhanced reproductive performance by facilitating oestrous detection and optimizing insemination schedules. From this review, we would conclude that oestrous detection alone contributes considerably to the reproductive status of the herd; therefore, applying different methods of oestrous detection reduces the incidence of missed oestrus and improves the fertility status of the herd.

Bovine Genital Leptospirosis: An Update of This Important Reproductive Disease

Bovine leptospirosis is an important disease that affects the reproductive sphere. Due to its high relevance for the bovine production chain in a worldwide scenario, a better understanding of the disease is crucial to reduce its negative impacts. The main agents are strains from the Sejroe serogroup, such as Hardjo and Guaricura, which lead to renal and genital infection. The genital colonization causes a chronic, silent, and subclinical reproductive syndrome, called Bovine Genital Leptospirosis (BGL). Embryonic death, estrus repetition, subfertility, and abortions are the main signs of BGL condition in females. However, although leptospires have been identified in semen, the manifestation of BGL in bulls remains to be clarified. The recommended diagnosis of BGL includes a serologic screening of the herds using the microscopic agglutination test followed by PCR of genital samples (cervicovaginal mucus, uterine fragment, or semen), especially from animals with reproductive failures. After the identification of carriers, control is carried out considering three steps: antimicrobial treatment of the carriers, environmental and reproductive management, and herd vaccination. Systematic testing, quarantine of newly arrived animals, and usage of antimicrobials in semen diluents or embryo culture media are other sanitary approaches that are encouraged to improve the control of the syndrome. Herein we discuss protocols for an efficient diagnosis and preventive procedures of BGL, which are fundamental to reducing the negative impact of the disease on cattle reproduction and its consequent economic hazards.

Associations among post-partum rumen fill and motility, subclinical ketosis and fertility in Holstein dairy cows

This prospective observational study aimed to investigate the association of rumen fill and motility in post-partum Holstein cows with their future reproductive performance and subclinical ketosis (SCK). The study population consisted of two independent data sets: the first (DS1) included 237 cows from 6 herds and the second one (DS2) 709 cows from 9 herds. Rumen Fill Score (RFS) was transformed into a 3 level-trait, representing very low, low and adequate dry matter intake, respectively. A binary Rumen Contraction Score (RCS) was defined as: 0: <2 contractions/2 min, impaired rumen motility and 1: ≥2 contractions/2 min, normal rumen motility. A combined binary trait based on RFS and RCS (RFCS) was also established, representing unsatisfactory and satisfactory rumen function. Three SCK traits were defined, based on 3 different thresholds, SCK_I: BHB≥1,000 mmol/L, SCK_II: BHB≥1,100 mmol/L and SCK_III: BHB≥1,200 mmol/L. Scores were assessed and blood samples collected on day 7 (DS1) or day 8 (DS2), postpartum. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and Generalized Linear Mixed Models were performed to evaluate the association of rumen and SCK traits with reproduction. Herd, parity, calving season and several postparturient diseases were also included as potential explanatory variables. Mean days from calving to pregnancy after the 1st artificial insemination (AI) and from calving to pregnancy (all AIs) were shorter for levels of rumen traits representing adequate DMI and normal rumen motility; in most cases these differences were statistically significant in both datasets. Cows with adequate DMI and normal rumen motility (only in DS2) had greater hazard (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.84 and 1.61, for RFS and RFCS, respectively) and odds (odds ratio [OR] = 2.49 and 1.98, for RFS and RFCS, respectively) for pregnancy at 1st AI. Assessment of the association of examined rumen traits with hazard and odds for pregnancy at all AIs yielded statistically significant results in both datasets. For RFS, RCS and RFCS, HRs ranged from 1.57 to 3.31 and ORs from 1.95 to 4.83. No statistically significant associations with hazard and odds for pregnancy at 1st or all AIs were detected, for any of the 3 SCK traits, in either dataset. Overall, the combined RFCS trait constantly identified more than twice the number of cows with future reproductive problems than a positive SCK blood test.

Profitability Optimization of Dairy Farms: The Effect of Pregnancy Rate and Culling Decision

One of the most important decisions in dairy cattle production today is the correct choice of culling time for cows. In the culling decision process, the farmer has to take into account a number of factors, the complexity of which makes the decision-making task difficult. A crucial factor is the evolution of reproductive indicators. The aim of the research was to develop a microsimulation method that can be used to easily investigate the impact on profitability of increasing pregnancy rates and when the culling decision is made. In the microsimulation, the stock was examined without changing any other conditions. A microsimulation method has been developed to determine with high accuracy the effect of the pregnancy rate and the increase in culling days on the economic indicators of individual dairy farms. By microsimulation, the effect of changing these two parameters on the expected milk production of cows, the most important economic indicator for cattle farms, was investigated. The other parameters of economic importance were simulated using a cattle farm database. The purpose of microsimulation is to assist in producing certain managerial decisions in order to achieve better profitability and economic efficiency. In summary, the results showed that increasing the pregnancy rate can successfully reduce the length of the calving interval, but the improved pregnancy rate did not show a significant increase in milk production. In order to obtain results that can be used by farms, the authors intend to further develop the model in the future, adapting it to farms and taking into account their specificities.

Postpartum longissimus dorsi muscle loss, but not back fat, is associated with resumption of postpartum ovarian activity in dairy cattle

The objectives of this observational cohort study were to assess the effect of body condition score change, back fat depth change, and muscle diameter change on the time to commencement of luteal activity and first estrus in commercial pedigree Holstein cows. A total of 140 of 200 commercial pedigree Holstein cows were enrolled in one dairy herd in Somerset, UK, over 52 wk in 2021 to 2022. The herd used 4 automatic milking machines with in-line progesterone measurement capability to determine commencement of luteal activity and time to first estrus. Cows were followed until at least 60 d postpartum, and milk progesterone was measured daily starting from 10 DIM. Body condition scoring and ultrasound measurements of back fat depth and longissimus dorsi muscle diameter were performed on cows twice, within 7 d of both calving and 60 DIM. Other explanatory variables assessed included parity, 60-d and 305-d milk yield, and subclinical ketosis (β-hydroxybutryate ≥1.2 mmol/L). Occurrence of clinical disease <60 DIM was forced into all models as a binary variable. Data were analyzed using multivariable Cox proportionate survival analyses. Muscle loss was associated with commencement of luteal activity and time to first estrus. A reduction in muscle diameter by 1.5 to 5 mm was associated with the shortest time to the start of luteal activity and first estrus. A reduction in muscle diameter >8 mm was associated with the longest times to luteal activity and first estrus. In addition to being affected by muscle loss, commencement of luteal activity was delayed by subclinical ketosis, clinical disease, and failure to gain body condition to 60 DIM. Cows that had a BCS loss of 0.25 or more between calving and 60 DIM were at least 52 ± 22% less likely to have commenced luteal activity compared with those that gained BCS. Interestingly, cows that had no change in body condition score commenced luteal activity later than those that gained body condition score. Muscle loss was associated with time to first estrus irrespective of clinical disease status. Cows that lost >8 mm of muscle diameter showed estrus behavior later than cows that lost 1.5 to 5 mm. In conclusion, our findings indicate that extensive muscle loss postpartum was associated with a delayed start to luteal activity and first estrus, irrespective of body condition change, clinical disease, and subclinical ketosis. Marginal muscle loss and a gain in body condition, however, were associated with an earlier start to luteal activity and first estrus.

β-Hydroxybutyrate affects cell physiological parameters, inflammatory markers and hormone receptor expression in bovine endometrial gland cells in vitro

INTRODUCTION

After calving, dairy cows are commonly affected by negative energy balance (NEB), indicated by high β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) blood levels. These are associated with subfertility frequently related to uterine inflammation. Since this could compromise functionality of endometrial glands that are essential for proper embryo implantation in sheep, we investigated effects of BHBA on bovine endometrial gland cells (BEGC) in vitro.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

BEGC were stimulated with different concentrations of BHBA over different periods. Cell metabolism and motility were examined by MTT-assay and Live-cell-imaging. The mRNA expression of the receptors for estrogen (ESR1, ESR2), progesterone (PR) and IFNτ (IFNAR1, IFNAR2), and the inflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-6 was determined by RT-qPCR. Protein expression for PR and ESR1 was analyzed by semiquantitative Western Blot.

RESULTS

BEGC metabolism was significantly decreased after stimulation with 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 mM BHBA over 24 and 36 h. Cell motility was significantly reduced by 1.8 and 2.4 mM BHBA already after 11 h. After 24 h stimulation, the ESR1 mRNA expression was significantly increased in BEGC stimulated with 0.6 mM BHBA. PR and TNFα mRNA expressions were increased in cells stimulated with 2.4 mM BHBA. Protein expression of ESR1 and PR was not altered.

DISCUSSION

Treatment with BHBA leads to restriction of BEGC metabolism and motility, and increased expression of TNFα, ESR1 and PR in vitro. This could explain how increased BHBA blood levels might compromise functionality of uterine glands in vivo and thus could contribute to compromised reproductive success of cows suffering from NEB.

Metataxonomic Analysis of the Uterine Microbiota Associated with Low Fertility in Dairy Cows Using Endometrial Tissues Prior to First Artificial Insemination

The deterioration in reproductive performance in association with low fertility leads to significant economic losses on dairy farms. The uterine microbiota has begun to attract attention as a possible cause of unexplained low fertility. We analyzed the uterine microbiota associated with fertility by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in dairy cows. First, the alpha (Chao1 and Shannon) and beta (unweighted and weighted UniFrac) diversities of 69 cows at four dairy farms that had passed the voluntary waiting period before the first artificial insemination (AI) were analyzed with respect to factors including farm, housing style, feeding management, parity, and AI frequency to conception. Significant differences were observed in the farm, housing style, and feeding management, except parity and AI frequency to conception. The other diversity metrics did not show significant differences in the tested factors. Similar results were obtained for the predicted functional profile. Next, the microbial diversity analysis of 31 cows at a single farm using weighted UniFrac distance matrices revealed a correlation with AI frequency to conception but not with parity. In correlation with AI frequency to conception, the predicted function profile appeared to be slightly modified and a single bacterial taxon, Arcobacter, was detected. The bacterial associations related to fertility were estimated. Considering these, the uterine microbiota in dairy cows can be varied depending on the farm management practices and may become one of the measures for low fertility. IMPORTANCE We examined the uterine microbiota associated with low fertility in dairy cows derived from four commercial farms via a metataxonomic approach using endometrial tissues prior to the first artificial insemination. The present study provided two new insights into the relevance of uterine microbiota with respect to fertility. First, the uterine microbiota varied depending on housing style and feeding management. Next, a subtle change was observed in functional profile analysis: a formation of uterine microbiota was detected to be different in correlation with fertility in one farm studied. Considering these insights, an examination system on bovine uterine microbiota is hopefully established based on continuous research on this topic.

Influence of Estrus on Dairy Cow Milk Exosomal miRNAs and Their Role in Hormone Secretion by Granulosa Cells

Estrus is crucial for cow fertility in modern dairy farms, but almost 50% of cows do not show the behavioral signs of estrus due to silent estrus and lack of suitable and high-accuracy methods to detect estrus. MiRNA and exosomes play essential roles in reproductive function and may be developed as novel biomarkers in estrus detection. Thus, we analyzed the miRNA expression patterns in milk exosomes during estrus and the effect of milk exosomes on hormone secretion in cultured bovine granulosa cells in vitro. We found that the number of exosomes and the exosome protein concentration in estrous cow milk were significantly lower than in non-estrous cow milk. Moreover, 133 differentially expressed exosomal miRNAs were identified in estrous cow milk vs. non-estrous cow milk. Functional enrichment analyses indicated that exosomal miRNAs were involved in reproduction and hormone-synthesis-related pathways, such as cholesterol metabolism, FoxO signaling pathway, Hippo signaling pathway, mTOR signaling pathway, steroid hormone biosynthesis, Wnt signaling pathway and GnRH signaling pathway. Consistent with the enrichment signaling pathways, exosomes derived from estrous and non-estrous cow milk both could promote the secretion of estradiol and progesterone in cultured bovine granulosa cells. Furthermore, genes related to hormonal synthesis (CYP19A1, CYP11A1, HSD3B1 and RUNX2) were up-regulated after exosome treatment, while exosomes inhibited the expression of StAR. Moreover, estrous and non-estrous cow-milk-derived exosomes both could increase the expression of bcl2 and decrease the expression of p53, and did not influence the expression of caspase-3. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate exosomal miRNA expression patterns during dairy cow estrus and the role of exosomes in hormone secretion by bovine granulosa cells. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for further investigating milk-derived exosomes and exosomal miRNA effects on ovary function and reproduction. Moreover, bovine milk exosomes may have effects on the ovaries of human consumers of pasteurized cow milk. These differential miRNAs might provide candidate biomarkers for the diagnosis of dairy cow estrus and will assist in developing new therapeutic targets for cow infertility.

Comparative evaluation of two commercial pregnancy-associated glycoproteins tests for early detection of pregnancy in dairy cattle

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the diagnostic accuracy of two pregnancy-associated glycoproteins tests (IDEXX on-farm pregnancy test [OFPT] and IDEXX rapid visual pregnancy test [RVPT]) for early pregnancy diagnosis in dairy cattle. Blood samples were collected from Holstein cows (n = 317) by coccygeal venipuncture 28-31 days after artificial insemination (AI). The OFPT and RVPT were performed on the farm within 2 h after blood collection using whole blood or blood serum. Transrectal ultrasonography (USG) was performed for pregnancy diagnosis on day 32 post-AI as a gold standard. One-hundred fourteen cows were diagnosed as pregnant and 203 were determined to be nonpregnant. Furthermore, embryonic mortality was detected in four of the nonpregnant animals, based on fragmented/dispersed embryonic membranes and the absence of heartbeat. Sixteen and 14 false positive results (13 jointly for both tests) were obtained for the RVPT and OFPT, respectively. Three false negative results were obtained for the RVPT. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy for the OFPT were 100%, 93.1%, 89.1%, 100% and 95.6%, and for RVPT were 97.4%, 92.1%, 87.4%, 98.4% and 94.0%, respectively. The ability of both tests to distinguish between pregnant and open cows was very good (AUC of both tests above 0.9). The OFPT and RVPT almost perfectly agreed with each other. According to McNemar's analysis, false positive results have been caused difference between the two pregnancy tests and USG. In conclusion, both the RVPT and OFPT proved to be reliable and practical methods for pregnancy diagnosis 28-31 days after AI in dairy cows. However, the results of both pregnancy tests were affected by the occurrence of embryonic mortality around the time of their employment.

Age-dependent genetic and environmental variance of semen quality in Nordic Holstein bulls

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and environmental parameters, across bull's age, for semen quality traits including pre- and postcryopreservation semen concentration, sperm motility, and sperm viability as well as ejaculate volume and number of doses per ejaculate. A data set on 96,595 ejaculates from 2,831 Nordic Holstein bulls collected between 2006 and 2019 was used. Genetic and environmental parameters were estimated using a random regression model and applying the average-information REML approach. Spline functions were chosen to fit the additive genetic and permanent environmental effects across bull's age, and the optimal number of knots was chosen using cross validation. Residual variance heterogeneity was assumed in different bull age classes. The estimated repeatabilities of semen quality traits ranged from 0.16 to 0.85 across different ages of bulls. The estimated heritabilities of semen quality traits ranged from 0.02 to 0.56 across different ages of bulls. The results indicate possibilities for genetic improvement of semen quality traits through selective breeding.

Feeding behavior in relation to ovarian cyclicity in cows with no or a short dry period

The objective of this study was to investigate relations between feeding behavior (FB) variables focusing on intake of the basal ration during 3 wk prepartum until 3 wk postpartum, and postpartum onset of luteal activity (OLA) in dairy cows subjected to no (0-d) or a short (30-d) dry period (DP). Feeding behavior of the basal ration intake (concentrate intake excluded) was continuously recorded by computerized feeders for 123 dairy cows and analyzed from 3 wk prepartum to 3 wk postpartum. Cows were subjected to a DP length: 0-d DP (n = 81), or 30-d DP (n = 42). Milk progesterone concentration was determined 3 times per week until 100 DIM to determine OLA, which was classified as early OLA (<21 DIM) and late OLA (≥21 DIM). Relations between FB and OLA class were analyzed using mixed models. During 3 wk prepartum, FB differed between parity class (parity 2 or ≥3 after calving). Cows with a 30-d DP prepartum, regardless of their OLA class, had more visits per meal, higher meal duration, total meal time, total daily feeding time, and lower feed intake and feeding rate compared with cows with 0-d DP. During the first 2 d postpartum, cows with OLA <21 had more visits per day and visits per meal compared with cows with OLA ≥21. During the first 3 wk postpartum, cows within the 30-d DP group with OLA <21 had greater meal size, feed intake, and feeding rate compared with cows with OLA ≥21 of this group. Cows within the 0-d DP group with OLA <21 had higher meal duration, total daily meal time, total daily feeding time, and meal size, but a lower feeding rate compared with cows with OLA ≥21 of this group. Concluding from the current study, cows with OLA <21 had a postpartum FB that reflected a cow with faster recovery from parturition and better adaptation to onset of lactation compared with OLA ≥21. No or a short DP affected prepartum FB, suggesting that prepartum management affects FB. This study provides evidence of different FB between cows with different timing of resumption of ovarian cyclicity.

The Marginal Abatement Cost of Antimicrobials for Dairy Cow Mastitis: A Bioeconomic Optimization Perspective

Maintaining udder health is the primary indication for antimicrobial use (AMU) in dairy production, and modulating this application is a key factor in decreasing AMU. Defining the optimal AMU and the associated practical rules is challenging since AMU interacts with many parameters. To define the trade-offs between decreased AMU, labor and economic performance, the bioeconomic stochastic simulation model DairyHealthSim (DHS)© was applied to dairy cow mastitis management and coupled to a mean variance optimization model and marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) analysis. The scenarios included three antimicrobial (AM) treatment strategies at dry-off, five types of general barn hygiene practices, five milking practices focused on parlor hygiene levels and three milk withdrawal strategies. The first part of economic results showed similar economic performances for the blanked dry-off strategy and selective strategy but demonstrated the trade-off between AMU reduction and farmers' workload. The second part of the results demonstrated the optimal value of the animal level of exposure to AM (ALEA). The MACC analysis showed that reducing ALEA below 1.5 was associated with a EUR 10,000 loss per unit of ALEA on average for the farmer. The results call for more integrative farm decision processes and bioeconomic reasoning to prompt efficient public interventions.

Addition of clinoptilolite in the diet reduces uterine PMN leukocytes and open days in multiparous lactating dairy cows managed in a mountain tropical pasture-based system

This study aimed to assess the effect of adding clinoptilolite in the diet on uterine health and reproductive performance in multiparous lactating dairy cows managed in a tropical pasture-based system above 2500 m of altitude. Seventy-seven multiparous Holstein crossbred cows from two farms were allocated randomly into two groups: clinoptilolite supplemented cows (CLG, n = 42) and non-supplemented cows as control (CG, n = 35). Cows from CLG were supplemented with clinoptilolite from 30 days (50 g/cow/day) before to 60 days after calving (200 g/cow/day). In CLG cows, percentages of uterine PMN leukocytes (P < 0.0001) and proportion of subclinical endometritis (P = 0.0187) were lower than in CG. The interval calving to first corpus luteum was shorter (P = 0.0759) in CLG than CG, and calving to first service interval was similar between treatments. Cows from CLG became pregnant 35 days earlier than CG cows (P = 0.0224). On farm A, calving to conception interval was 18.1 days longer in CLG than in CG (P = 0.3750); in farm B, this interval was 86.2 days shorter in CLG than in CG (P = 0.0002). In conclusion, daily addition of clinoptilolite in the diet decreased the percentage of uterine PMN leukocytes, the proportion of cows with subclinical endometritis, and shortened the calving-conception interval in multiparous lactating dairy cows.

Observational study on associations between resilience indicators based on daily milk yield in first lactation and lifetime profitability

Resilience is the ability of cows to be minimally affected by disturbances, such as pathogens, heat waves, and changes in feed quality, or to quickly recover. Obvious advantages of resilience are good animal welfare and easy and pleasant management for farmers. Furthermore, economic effects are also expected, but these remain to be determined. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between resilience and lifetime gross margin, using indicators of resilience calculated from fluctuations in daily milk yield using an observational study. Resilience indicators and lifetime gross margin were calculated for 1,325 cows from 21 herds. These cows were not alive anymore and, therefore, had complete lifetime data available for many traits. The resilience indicators were the natural log-transformed variance (LnVar) and the lag-1 autocorrelation (r_auto) of daily milk yield deviations from cow-specific lactation curves in parity 1. Good resilience is indicated by low LnVar (small yield response to disturbances) and low r_auto (quick yield recovery to baseline). Lifetime gross margin was calculated as the sum of all revenues minus the sum of all costs throughout life. Included revenues were from milk, calf value, and slaughter of the cow. Included costs were from feed, rearing, insemination, management around calving, disease treatments, and destruction in case of death on farm. Feed intake was unknown and, therefore, lifetime feed costs had to be estimated based on milk yield records. The association of each resilience indicator with lifetime gross margin, and also with the underlying revenues and costs, was investigated using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models. Mean daily milk yield in first lactation, herd, and year of birth were included as covariates and factors. Natural log-transformed variance had a significantly negative association with lifetime gross margin, which means that cows with stable milk yield (low LnVar, good resilience) in parity 1 generated on average a higher lifetime gross margin than cows that had the same milk yield level but with more fluctuations. The association with lifetime gross margin could be mainly attributed to higher lifetime milk revenues for cows with low LnVar, due to a longer lifespan. Unlike LnVar, r_auto was not significantly associated with lifetime gross margin or any of the underlying lifetime costs and revenues. However, it was significantly associated with yearly treatment costs, which is important for ease of management. In conclusion, the importance of resilience for total profit generated by a cow at the end of life was confirmed by the significant association of LnVar with lifetime gross margin, although effects of differences in feed efficiency between resilient and less resilient cows remain to be studied. The economic advantage can be mainly ascribed to benefits of long lifespan.

Dimethyl itaconic acid improves viability and steroidogenesis and suppresses cytokine production in LPS-treated bovine ovarian granulosa cells by regulating TLR4/nfkβ, NLRP3, JNK signaling pathways

The stimulation of pro-inflammatory pathways by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxins is a key player in the pathological mechanisms involved in the development of ovarian dysfunctions in dairy cows. Dimethyl itaconate acid (DMIA) is a novel immunometabolite that has recently emerged as a regulator of inflammatory responses in mammals. The present study was undertaken to determine the anti-inflammatory effects of DMIA on bovine granulosa cells (GCs) and to explore its possible molecular mechanisms. The ovarian GCs were obtained from small follicles of dairy cows. The GCs were stimulated with 1 μg/mL LPS for 4 h and then treated with 250 μM DMIA for 12 h. The viability, production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, activation of inflammatory signaling pathways and synthesis of steroid hormones were evaluated in treated GCs. Our results showed that DMIA reduced the inflammatory responses in LPS stimulated GCs by down-regulating the expression of nod-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 inflammasome, and toll-like receptor 4 and by suppressing the phosphorylation of nuclear factor kappa B and c-Jun N-terminal kinase proteins. DMIA also attenuated the increased production of pro inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 1 beta (p < 0.01) in LPS stimulated GCs. Exposure of LPS stimulated GCs to DMIA improved the impaired steroidogenesis by up-regulation of steroid synthesis genes including 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, follicle stimulating hormone receptor and cytochrome P450 aromatase. The results of the present study highlight the potential role of itaconic acid for the improvement of GCs inflammation in dairy cows with ovarian dysfunctions.

Evaluating automated infrared thermography and vulva exposure tracking as components of an estrus detection platform in a commercial dairy herd

The primary objective of this study was to develop an automated infrared thermography platform (Estrus BenchMark) capable of measuring skin temperature and tail movements as a means of identifying cows in estrus. The secondary objective was to evaluate the accuracy of Estrus BenchMark to detect estrus compared to in-line milk progesterone (P₄) analysis (Herd Navigator System) in a commercial dairy herd managed under a robotic milking system. Data were collected on forty-six cows from 45 to 120 d after calving. Cows were flagged in estrus when milk P₄ fell below 5 ng/mL. The Estrus BenchMark true positive estrus alerts (Sensitivity; Se%) were compared to Herd Navigator System estrus alerts at different time-windows (±12 h, ±24 h, ±48 h, and ±72 h) relative to the Estrus BenchMark estrus alerts for all the estrus alerts (AE) and confidence-quality estrus (CQE; >80% quality) alerts identified by Herd Navigator System. The Estrus BenchMark captured skin temperature and tail movements resulting in vulva exposure (left tail movements, LTail; right tail movements, RTail; and pooled tail movements, PTail) for each milking event. Skin temperature tended to increase when the milk P₄ concentration (Least-Squares Means ± SE) dropped for AE (estrus day [d 0]; P₄; 3.51 ± 0.05 ng/mL, Skin temperature; 33.31 ± 2.38 °C) compared with d -7 (P₄; 20.22 ± 0.73 ng/mL; Skin temperature: 32.05 ± 3.77 °C). The increase in skin temperature, however, was significant in cows with CQE > 80% at d 0 (32.75 ± 0.29 °C) compared to d -7 (31.80 ± 0.28 °C). The prevalence of tail movements to expose vulva was greater (P = 0.01) in AE at d 0 (LTail: 62.50%; PTail; 68.75%; and RTail: 56.25%) compared with d -7 (LTail: 18.75%; PTail: 9.37%: and RTail: 9.37%), and d +4 (LTail: 9.37%; PTail: 9.37%; and RTail: 12.5%). Moreover, the higher prevalence of tail movements at d 0 was observed in cows with CQE > 80% (LTail; 65%, PTail; 80%, and RTail; 70%) compared to those with CQE < 80%. The highest Estrus BenchMark Youden index (YJ; 0.45), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR; 9.04), and Efficiency (0.77) were achieved for AE in a ±48 h window and at ±72 h window for CQE (YJ; 0.66, DOR; 25.29, and Efficiency 0.76) relative to Herd Navigator System estrus alerts. The highest Estrus BenchMark resulted in 58% estrus detection rates for AE and 80% for cows with CQE compared to the Herd Navigator System.

Characteristics of miRNAs Present in Bovine Sperm and Associations With Differences in Fertility

Small non-coding RNAs have been linked to different phenotypes in bovine sperm, however attempts to identify sperm-borne molecular biomarkers of male fertility have thus far failed to identify a robust profile of expressed miRNAs related to fertility. We hypothesized that some differences in bull fertility may be reflected in the levels of different miRNAs in sperm. To explore such differences in fertility that are not due to differences in visible metrics of sperm quality, we employed Next Generation Sequencing to compare the miRNA populations in Bos taurus sperm from bulls with comparable motility and morphology but varying Sire Conception Rates. We identified the most abundant miRNAs in both populations (miRs -34b-3p; -100-5p; -191-5p; -30d-4p; -21-5p) and evaluated differences in the overall levels and specific patterns of isomiR expression. We also explored correlations between specific pairs of miRNAs in each population and identified 10 distinct pairs of miRNAs that were positively correlated in bulls with higher fertility and negatively correlated in comparatively less fertile individuals. Furthermore, 8 additional miRNA pairs demonstrated the opposite trend; negatively correlated in high fertility animals and positively correlated in less fertile bulls. Finally, we performed pathway analysis to identify potential roles of miRNAs present in bull sperm in the regulation of specific genes that impact spermatogenesis and embryo development. Together, these results present a comprehensive picture of the bovine sperm miRNAome that suggests multiple potential roles in fertility.

ProAKAP4 Semen Concentrations as a Valuable Marker Protein of Post-Thawed Semen Quality and Bull Fertility: A Retrospective Study

Functional sperm quality markers to predict bull fertility have been actively investigated. Among them, proAKAP4, which is the precursor of AKAP4, the main structural protein in the fibrous sheath of spermatozoa; appears to be promising, especially since spermatozoa lacking AKAP4 expression were shown to be immotile, abnormal, and infertile. In this study, the objective was to evaluate proAKAP4 concentration values with the classic sperm motility descriptors and fertility outcomes (NRR at 90 days) in post-thawed conditions of 10 bulls’ semen. ProAKAP4 expression was confirmed by Western blotting and proAKAP4 concentrations were determined by ELISA. Variations in proAKAP4 concentrations were observed independently of the motility sperm descriptors measured using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). A ProAKAP4 concentration of 38.67 ± 8.55 ng/10 million spermatozoa was obtained as a statistical mean of all samples. Threshold values of proAKAP4 were then determined between 19.96 to 96.95 ng/10 million spermatozoa. ProAKAP4 concentrations were positively correlated with progressive motility and the linearity coefficient. The sperm showing the lowest progressive motility were the samples exhibiting proAKAP4 concentrations below 20 ng/10 million spermatozoa. Furthermore, proAKAP4 concentrations were significantly higher in bulls with a higher NRR in the field. Our results demonstrate a correlation between the semen concentration of proAKAP4 and NRR-90d (p = 0.05) in post-thawed bull semen, highlighting the potential of proAKAP4 as a predictive marker of bull fertility.

Identifying pleiotropic variants and candidate genes for fertility and reproduction traits in Holstein cattle via association studies based on imputed whole-genome sequence genotypes

Background

Genetic progress for fertility and reproduction traits in dairy cattle has been limited due to the low heritability of most indicator traits. Moreover, most of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes associated with these traits remain unknown. In this study, we used 5.6 million imputed DNA sequence variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of 18 fertility and reproduction traits in Holstein cattle. Aiming to identify pleiotropic variants and increase detection power, multiple-trait analyses were performed using a method to efficiently combine the estimated SNP effects of single-trait GWAS based on a chi-square statistic.

Results

There were 87, 72, and 84 significant SNPs identified for heifer, cow, and sire traits, respectively, which showed a wide and distinct distribution across the genome, suggesting that they have relatively distinct polygenic nature. The biological functions of immune response and fatty acid metabolism were significantly enriched for the 184 and 124 positional candidate genes identified for heifer and cow traits, respectively. No known biological function was significantly enriched for the 147 positional candidate genes found for sire traits. The most important chromosomes that had three or more significant QTL identified are BTA22 and BTA23 for heifer traits, BTA8 and BTA17 for cow traits, and BTA4, BTA7, BTA17, BTA22, BTA25, and BTA28 for sire traits. Several novel and biologically important positional candidate genes were strongly suggested for heifer (SOD2, WTAP, DLEC1, PFKFB4, TRIM27, HECW1, DNAH17, and ADAM3A), cow (ANXA1, PCSK5, SPESP1, and JMJD1C), and sire (ELMO1, CFAP70, SOX30, DGCR8, SEPTIN14, PAPOLB, JMJD1C, and NELL2) traits.

Conclusions

These findings contribute to better understand the underlying biological mechanisms of fertility and reproduction traits measured in heifers, cows, and sires, which may contribute to improve genomic evaluation for these traits in dairy cattle.

Interrelationship between diseases and calving season and their impact on reproductive parameters and milk production of tropical dairy cows

The interactions between calving season, the occurrence of retained placenta, intrauterine infections (IUI), and early mastitis, and their effects on the reproductive performance and milk yield of Holstein-Friesian cows in a tropical environment were studied using data from 3320 calvings (1948 cows) from two farms in El Salvador. Based on environmental conditions, season of calving was categorized into: quadrimester 1 (November-February), quadrimester 2 (March-June), and quadrimester 3 (July-October) where quadrimester 2 and 3 had the highest ambient temperature and relative humidity, respectively. Cows were classified into 1, 2, and 3 + parities. The effects of quadrimester and of diseases on days to first service, services per conception, days open, interval between services and 305-day milk yield were studied in separated multivariate regressions. The likelihood of experiencing a disease contingent on the calving season and the likelihood of a cow being culled due to poor fertility associated with experiencing a disease were evaluated using logistic regression. Cows calving in quadrimester 2 and 3 were more likely to suffer from IUI and showed poorer reproduction than cows calving in quadrimester 1. Reproduction was more strongly affected by IUI. Mastitis increased the days to first service, days open, and interval between services. Mastitis and IUI also caused a lower 305-day milk yield. Overall, hotter and more humid conditions lead to higher incidence of disease and poorer reproductive performance. The physiological responses that lead to these phenomena should be further studied to understand the interactions between diseases, environmental conditions and reproduction.

Economics of Rebreeding Nonpregnant Dairy Cows Diagnosed by Transrectal Ultrasonography on Day 25 after Artificial Insemination

Pregnancy rates of Holstein cows showed a substantial decline in the past years, which caused intensive TAI programs for nonpregnant cows to shorten the period between unsuccessful insemination and the next attempt on the same cow. Although many studies examined the improvement in pregnancy rates following TAI, only a few examined the economic impact of such programs. In this study, we look at the feasibility of reproductive programs that included early pregnancy diagnosis performed by transrectal ultrasonography 25 days after artificial insemination (AI) and TAI of nonpregnant cows. This resulted in the following two TAI programs: a modified OvSynch program with a second PGF2α treatment at 24 h interval (GPPG, n = 100) and a modified OvSynch program with an intravaginal progesterone-release device inserted between days 0−7 (PRID + GPPG, n = 100). Cows included in the TAI programs recorded an improvement in the cumulative pregnancy rate (67% vs. 53%; 69% vs. 53%) compared to those in which this strategy was not applied (p < 0.05). An economic analysis was performed using a decision-support tool to estimate the net present value (NPV; USD/cow/year). The analysis revealed a difference in NPV of 89.6 USD/cow/year between the programs (rebreeding the nonpregnant cows following the TAI program vs. AI at detected estrus). In summary, rebreeding the nonpregnant cows after early negative pregnancy diagnosis (25 days after AI) using this strategy can improve the cumulative pregnancy rate and profitability of dairy farms.

Historical Evolution of Cattle Management and Herd Health of Dairy Farms in OECD Countries

This work aimed to review the important aspects of the dairy industry evolution at herd level, interrelating production with health management systems. Since the beginning of the industrialization of the dairy cattle sector (1950s), driven by the need to feed the rapidly growing urban areas, this industry has experienced several improvements, evolving in management and technology. These changes have been felt above all in the terms of milking, rearing, nutrition, reproductive management, and design of facilities. Shortage of labor, emphasis on increasing farm efficiency, and quality of life of the farmers were the driving factors for these changes. To achieve it, in many areas of the world, pasture production has been abandoned, moving to indoor production, which allows for greater nutritional and reproductive control of the animals. To keep pace with this paradigm in milk production, animal health management has also been improved. Prevention and biosecurity have become essential to control and prevent pathologies that cause great economic losses. As such, veterinary herd health management programs were created, allowing the management of health of the herd as a whole, through the common work of veterinarians and farmers. These programs address the farms holistically, from breeding to nutrition, from prevention to consultancy. In addition, farmers are now faced with a consumer more concerned on animal production, valuing certified products that respect animal health and welfare, as well as environmental sustainability.

Factors affecting calving to conception interval (days open) in dairy cows located at Dessie and Kombolcha towns, Ethiopia

This study was aimed at determining the median days of calving to conception interval (days open) and identifying the major risk factors determining the days open in dairy cows. Both retrospective and longitudinal studies were conducted on dairy cows located in the Dessie and Kombolcha towns of South Wollo Zone, northeast Ethiopia from August 2019 to August 2020. The Kaplan-Meier model of survival analysis was used to determine the median days open and compare the survival distribution of each level of explanatory variables likely to influence the days open of dairy cows. Accordingly, the overall conception rate of dairy cows was 44.7%. The median days open in the study was 154 days. There is a 16% probability of surviving (i.e, the probability that the conception event has not yet occurred) at the end of 210 days postpartum period. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to quantify the effect of each of the explanatory variables on the days open in the first 210 days postpartum. Factors that had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the calving to conception interval were the season of insemination, breeding system, calving to insemination interval, and herd milk yield level. However, the peripartum, postpartum disorders, and the town of the farm are not significant (p>0.05). Accordingly, cows inseminated in the autumn season (HR = 4.45), cows less than or equal to 85 days calving to insemination interval (HR = 2.41), artificially inseminated cows (HR = 1.45), and high herd milk yield cow had a higher probability of becoming pregnant. In conclusion, the management practices and breeding decisions seem to be important determinants to improve the conception rate or decrease the days open in dairy cows.

Environmental Quality and Compliance with Animal Welfare Legislation at Swedish Cattle and Sheep Farms

Conflicts between different goals can obstruct progress in sustainability, but interests may also coincide. We evaluated relationships between environmental quality and animal welfare on Swedish farms with grazing livestock, using publicly available databases. Data were collected from 8700 official animal welfare inspections on 5808 cattle farms and 2823 inspections on 2280 sheep farms in 2012–2017. Compliance with three animal-based checkpoints was modeled using logistic regression, including a random farm effect to account for repeated inspections. Compliance was regressed on semi-natural grassland area, participation in the National Meadow and Pasture Inventory, Agri-Environmental Scheme (AES) grassland payments, presence of indicator plant species, and the presence of Natura 2000 habitats. Cattle farms complied more often if they received AES payments for grasslands of special values compared with if they did not apply for them (OR = 1.55–1.65; p ≤ 0.0001) and there was a similar tendency for cattle farms that applied for but were denied such payments (OR = 1.29; p = 0.074). There was also a strong tendency for Natura 2000 habitats on cattle farms to be associated with higher compliance (OR = 1.36; p = 0.059). These results suggest a direct or indirect causal effect of biodiversity on cattle welfare. The same associations could not be shown in sheep.

Benefits of Veterinary Herd Health Management on German Dairy Farms: Status Quo and Farmers' Perspective

Veterinary Herd Health Management plays an important role in veterinary medicine on dairy farms and has also been mandatory at the European Union level since April 21, 2021. Despite the increasing importance of VHHM, little is known about the extent of utilization of VHHM by dairy farmers and their view on this type of collaboration. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the status quo of the currently practiced VHHM in Germany. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted among dairy farmers in November and December 2020. From 216 analyzed questionnaires, about half (n = 106) of the surveyed dairy farmers used VHHM at different scopes. However, regardless of the group, the term “veterinary herd health management” generally was given most relative importance by the participants as a veterinary service for herd fertility improvement, rather than the actual definition of a holistic approach. In contrast to this, the actual motivation of the VHHM participants, to take part in such a program was primarily based on the desire to safeguard animal health by employing preventive measures, that is, to avoid the occurrence of diseases via improved management and to improve farm performance (and profitability). Dairy farmers who opted for VHHM tended to manage larger higher yielding herds than those who did not. Additionally, the farmers in latter farms were more likely to make joint animal health decisions with their veterinarians. Using a latent class analysis, two groups of farmers among farms that were not currently using VHHM were identified, one of which expressed great interest in using VHHM while the other did not. Since the new legal basis makes the topic even more relevant than before, dairy farmers, animals, and veterinarians might benefit from the study to exploit hidden opportunities for VHHM collaboration.

Simulating the mechanics behind sub-optimal mobility and the associated economic losses in dairy production

Hoof disorders and sub-optimal mobility (SOM) are economically important health issues in dairy farming. Although the dynamics of hoof disorders have an important effect on cow mobility, they have not been considered in previous simulation models that estimate the economic loss of SOM. Furthermore, these models do not consider the varying severities of SOM. The objective of this study was to develop a novel bio-economic simulation model to simulate the dynamics of 8 hoof disorders: digital dermatitis (DD), interdigital hyperplasia (HYP), interdigital dermatitis/heel-horn erosion (IDHE), interdigital phlegmon (IP), overgrown hoof (OH), sole haemorrhage (SH), sole ulcer (SU) and white-line disease (WLD), their role in SOM, and estimate the economic loss of SOM in a herd of 125 dairy cows. A Reed-Frost model was used for DD and a Greenwood model for the other 7 hoof disorders. Economic analysis was conducted per mobility score according to a 5-point mobility scoring method (1 = perfect mobility; 5 = severely impaired mobility) by comparing a scenario with SOM and one without SOM. Parameters used in the model were based on literature and expert opinion and deemed credible during model validation rounds. Results showed that the mean cumulative incidence for maximum mobility scores 2-5 SOM episodes were respectively 34, 16, 7 and <1 episodes per 100 cows per pasture period and 39, 19, 8, <1 episodes per 100 cows per housing period. The mean total annual economic loss due to SOM resulting from the hoof disorders under study was €15,342: €122 per cow per year. The economic analysis uncovered direct economic losses that could be directly linked to SOM episodes and indirect economic losses that could not be directly linked to SOM episodes but arose due to the presence of SOM. The mean total annual direct economic loss for maximum mobility score 2-5 SOM episodes was €1129, €3098, €4354 and €480, respectively. The mean total annual indirect economic loss varied considerably between the 5th and 95th percentiles: €-6174 and €19,499, and had a mean of €6281. This loss was composed of additional indirect culling due to SOM (∼65%) and changes in the overall herd milk production (∼35%) because of additional younger replacement heifers entering the herd due to increased culling rates. The bio-economic model presented novel results with respect to indirect economic losses arising due to SOM. The results can be used to stimulate farmer awareness and promote better SOM management.

Production and Health Management from Grazing to Confinement Systems of Largest Dairy Bovine Farms in Azores: A Farmers' Perspective

This study aimed to evaluate differences and critical factors in production and health management between dairy cattle farms with fixed milk parlours (FMP), and mobile milk systems (MMS) from Azorean grasslands. According to the farmers’ perspective, calf diarrhea, calf pneumonia, infertility/poor reproductive management, and mastitis were the main problems that farms faced in 2020. FMP was associated with more advanced and mechanized production systems, with a higher adherence to preventive and biosecurity control programs, than traditional MMS farms. MMS farms also showed a greater vocation for dual-purpose farming (beef and milk), smaller herd sizes and more grazing time for cows. In conclusion, inherent and non-inherent differences in production and health management between FMP and MMS were quantified by authors. These results indicate that a greater adoption of preventive veterinary medicine and biosecurity measures should be taken, especially among MMS farms. The education of farmers should also be improved and stimulated.

Abstract

The intensification of bovine milk production in the Azores has led farmers to increase farm size and specialization in grasslands, implementing confined and semi-confined production systems. Fixed milking parlours (FMP) have progressively gained more popularity, at the expense of conventional mobile milking systems (MMS). The present study aimed to evaluate the associations between production and health management in dairy cattle farms, with FMP or MMS, in grasslands (São Miguel, Azores), according to the farmers’ perspective. A total of 102 questions about production and health management were surveyed in 105 farms with >30 dairy cows each. Farms with FMP were associated (p ≤ 0.05) with larger herd size, better facilities, and specialized management, however, the adoption of preventive and biosecurity measures should be improved by these farmers. MMS farms implemented a lower level of disease prevention or control programs, less frequent transhumance, and showed a wider vocation to dual-purpose (milk and cross beef) than FMP farms. In conclusion, MMS and FMP farms tried to optimize yield and economic viability in different ways using grasslands. Several biosecurity and health prevention constraints were identified for improvement.

Estimates of the Economic Cost Caused by Five Major Reproductive Problems in Dairy Animals in Assam and Bihar, India

Reproductive problems in dairy animals reduce fertility, prevent conception, create problems in the delivery of healthy calves, lead to postpartum complications, increase inter-calving periods, reduce milk yield, and lower overall lifetime productivity. This study aimed at understanding the incidence of reproductive problems and the cost caused by these. The study covered 954 dairy animals in Bihar and 1348 dairy animals in Assam that were selected using a multi-stage random sampling method. The costs were calculated as the sum of income losses and expenditures incurred. The major cost incurred resulted from extended calving intervals (46.1% of the total cost), followed by loss through salvage selling (38.1%), expenditure for treatment of repeat breeders (5.9%), loss of milk production (5.3%) and expenditure for extra inseminations (2.0%). About one fifth of the selected reproductive problems were left untreated. The estimated cost of reproductive problems was Indian Rupees (INR) 2424.9 (USD 36.1) per dairy animal per year (of the total dairy animal population) which represented approximately 4.1% of the mean value loss of dairy animals (INR 58,966/USD 877) per year. Reproductive problems were significantly (p < 0.001) higher among improved (exotic breed or cross-bred) dairy animals than indigenous (native breed or nondescript indigenous) dairy animals. The study suggests that with the increase of improved dairy animal population, the loss may further increase. The study concludes that any economic estimation of reproduction problems based on aetiology without confirmatory diagnoses could be highly misleading because of the complex nature of the problems.

Financial losses and cost benefit analysis of controlling anestrus in dairy animals of Punjab

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the financial losses associated with anestrus and cost benefit analysis of various factors controlling this disease in dairy animals of Punjab region. The overall economic loss incurred by dairy farmers due to anestrus irrespective of species of animals was ` 24,362. The mean economic losses per animal per year was almost same in crossbred cattle (` 27,511.48±1,227.60) and buffaloes (` 27,038.69±1,128.05) and lower in indigenous cattle (` 18,296.95±1,317.53). When the average annual losses due to different components were estimated, the largest component was due to replacement cost followed by milk yield loss cost, future calf reduction and veterinary charges. Among different agro-climatic zones (ACZs), highest loss was observed in Central Plain Region (` 27,384.63±2,407.03) and the least affected zone was Flood Plain Region (` 19,135.6±4,326.50). While controlling anestrus at farm level through different control measures, the overall benefit cost ratio was estimated to be 5.33. The projected loss in Punjab state due to anestrus in dairy animals was estimated to be ` 2135.79 crore. It may be concluded that the mean economic losses per animal per year was higher in crossbred cattle and buffaloes, where the largest component was due to replacement cost followed by milk yield loss, future calf reduction and veterinary charges. In order to control economic losses due to anestrus, it is important to improve all aspects related to heat detection, and to provide appropriate preventive or therapeutic measures.

Assessing the consequences and economic impact of retained placenta in Holstein dairy cattle

Retained placenta (RP) is as an important reproductive disorder which adversely affects the economic performance of dairy cows. Understanding the consequences and economic losses associated with RP can persuade dairy farmers to consider it more effectively in their management decisions. Hence, the aims of this research were to assess the effect of RP on production and reproduction attributes as well as economic losses in Iranian Holstein cows. The data was collected from nine Holstein dairy herds in Isfahan province of Iran. The final dataset comprised of 139,508 records of 58,086 cows which calved between March 2011 and December 2018. A linear mixed model was developed to evaluate the effect of RP on individual performance of primiparous and multiparous cows. The economic losses associated with the RP were finally estimated. The average incidence of RP per cow over a year was 12.3% (ranged between 9.0 and 15.4%). Each incidence of RP significantly reduced milk, fat and protein yields in primiparous and multiparous cows (P < 0.05). The adverse effect of RP on the milk production was much higher in the cows at the early phase of lactation (i.e. 100-d lactation group) than the cows in mid or late lactation. The estimated production losses (±standard deviation) due to the RP event were 282.1 ± 43.0 and 295.7 ± 40.8 kg per cow for a 305-d lactation period in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. However, the fertility performance was less affected by the RP in primiparous compared to multiparous cows. The average of days open increased by 8.3 ± 5.3 and 19.8 ± 7.1 d in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. The financial losses associated with RP were on average US$ 350.4 and US$ 481.2 per incidence in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively, ranged from US$ 311.9 to 456.2 depending on the parity number (primi- or multiparous) and herd management. The highest financial losses due to RP were associated with reduction in milk production (38.5% of total loss) and low fertility (28.5% of total loss) had the highest contribution in in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. The results of our research highlight the economic importance of improved calving management to reduce RP occurrence in dairy cows.

Evaluation of bull fertility in Italian Brown Swiss dairy cattle using cow field data

Dairy bull fertility is traditionally evaluated using semen production and quality traits; however, these attributes explain only part of the differences observed in fertility among bulls. Alternatively, bull fertility can be directly evaluated using cow field data. The main objective of this study was to investigate bull fertility in the Italian Brown Swiss dairy cattle population using confirmed pregnancy records. The data set included a total of 397,926 breeding records from 1,228 bulls and 129,858 lactating cows between first and fifth lactation from 2000 to 2019. We first evaluated cow pregnancy success, including factors related to the bull under evaluation, such as bull age, bull inbreeding, and AI organization, and factors associated with the cow that receives the dose of semen, including herd-year-season, cow age, parity, and milk yield. We then estimated sire conception rate using only factors related to the bull. Model predictive ability was evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation with 10 replicates. Interestingly, our analyses revealed that there is a substantial variation in conception rate among Brown Swiss bulls, with more than 20% conception rate difference between high-fertility and low-fertility bulls. We also showed that the prediction of bull fertility is feasible as our cross-validation analyses achieved predictive correlations equal to 0.30 for sire conception rate. Improving reproduction performance is one of the major challenges of the dairy industry worldwide, and for this, it is essential to have accurate predictions of service sire fertility. This study represents the foundation for the development of novel tools that will allow dairy producers, breeders, and artificial insemination companies to make enhanced management and selection decisions on Brown Swiss male fertility.

Review: Genetic selection of high-yielding dairy cattle toward sustainable farming systems in a rapidly changing world

The massive improvement in food production, as a result of effective genetic selection combined with advancements in farming practices, has been one of the greatest achievements of modern agriculture. For instance, the dairy cattle industry has more than doubled milk production over the past five decades, while the total number of cows has been reduced dramatically. This was achieved mainly through the intensification of production systems, direct genetic selection for milk yield and a limited number of related traits, and the use of modern technologies (e.g., artificial insemination and genomic selection). Despite the great betterment in production efficiency, strong drawbacks have occurred along the way. First, across-breed genetic diversity reduced dramatically, with the worldwide use of few common dairy breeds, as well as a substantial reduction in within-breed genetic diversity. Intensive selection for milk yield has also resulted in unfavorable genetic responses for traits related to fertility, health, longevity, and environmental sensitivity. Moving forward, the dairy industry needs to continue refining the current selection indexes and breeding goals to put greater emphasis on traits related to animal welfare, health, longevity, environmental efficiency (e.g., methane emission and feed efficiency), and overall resilience. This needs to be done through the definition of criteria (traits) that (a) represent well the biological mechanisms underlying the respective phenotypes, (b) are heritable, and (c) can be cost-effectively measured in a large number of animals and as early in life as possible. The long-term sustainability of the dairy cattle industry will also require diversification of production systems, with greater investments in the development of genetic resources that are resilient to perturbations occurring in specific farming systems with lesser control over the environment (e.g., organic, agroecological, and pasture-based, mountain-grazing farming systems). The conservation, genetic improvement, and use of local breeds should be integrated into the modern dairy cattle industry and greater care should be taken to avoid further genetic diversity losses in dairy cattle populations. In this review, we acknowledge the genetic progress achieved in high-yielding dairy cattle, closely related to dairy farm intensification, that reaches its limits. We discuss key points that need to be addressed toward the development of a robust and long-term sustainable dairy industry that maximize animal welfare (fundamental needs of individual animals and positive welfare) and productive efficiency, while also minimizing the environmental footprint, inputs required, and sensitivity to external factors.

Adipokines as biomarkers of postpartum subclinical endometritis in dairy cows

Adipokines emerged as regulators of metabolism and inflammation in several scenarios. This study evaluated the relationship between adipokines (adiponectin, chemerin and visfatin) and cytological (subclinical) endometritis, by comparing healthy (without), transient (recovered by 45 days postpartum (DPP)) and persistent (until 45 DPP) endometritis cows (n = 49). Cows with persistent endometritis had higher adiponectin concentrations in plasma (at 21 DPP, P < 0.05 and at 45 DPP, P < 0.01) and in uterine fluid (at 45 DPP, P < 0.001), and higher chemerin concentrations in plasma (P < 0.05) and uterine fluid (P < 0.01) at 45 DPP than healthy cows. Cows with persistent endometritis had higher gene transcription in the cellular pellet of uterine fluid and protein expression in the endometrium of these adipokines and their receptors than healthy cows. Adiponectin plasma concentrations allowed to discriminate healthy from persistent endometritis cows, in 87% (21 DPP) and 98% (45 DPP) of cases, and adiponectin and chemerin uterine fluid concentrations at 45 DPP allowed for this discrimination in 100% of cases. Cows with concentrations above the cutoff were a minimum of 3.5 (plasma 21 DPP), 20.4 (plasma 45 DPP), and 33.3 (uterine fluid 45 DPP) times more at risk of evidencing persistent endometritis at 45 DPP than cows with concentrations below the cutoff. Overall, results indicate a relationship between adipokine signalling and the inflammatory status of the postpartum uterus of dairy cows, evidencing that adipokines represent suitable biomarkers of subclinical endometritis, able to predict the risk of persistence of inflammation.

Potential Benefits to Dairy Cow Welfare of Using a Ceftiofur-Ketoprofen Combination Drug for the Treatment of Inflammatory Disease Associated with Pyrexia: A Field Clinical Trial on Acute Puerperal Metritis

Simple Summary

Some diseases of dairy cows require the use of an antimicrobial and an anti-inflammatory drug in association to be fully cured and relieve pain. However, pharmacological treatments in cattle are subject to strict regulations and restrictions, and cow handling is not always easy and safe. For these reasons, only the antimicrobial is often administered, thus not fully applying the appropriate therapeutic protocol. This study investigated whether the use of a drug combining ceftiofur and ketoprofen in a single injection instead of ceftiofur alone can improve the healing and welfare of dairy cows affected by a pyretic inflammatory disease, such as acute puerperal metritis. The results show that the variation in the physiological parameters was similar between the two treatment groups, and daily activity and milk yield did not differ from healthy cows. However, affected cows that were treated with the combined drug seemed to be more likely to become pregnant within 120 days in milk than those that received the antimicrobial alone, having an estimated number of days open more similar to that of the healthy cows.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the benefits of using a drug combining ceftiofur and ketoprofen in a single injection on dairy cow welfare in the case of inflammatory disease with pyrexia, such as acute puerperal metritis (APM). Cows of an Italian dairy farm were examined between 5 and 14 days of calving: those with APM were randomly treated either with combined ceftiofur–ketoprofen (CD) or ceftiofur alone (C), starting from Day 0, and an equal number of healthy cows served as a control (CTR). Clinical examination and blood sampling were performed until Day 7 in each group according to specific schedules. Daily cow activity was recorded until Day 14 and daily milk production until Day 30. Additional data on fertility were collected until 120 days in milk (DIM). Data of 20 cows per group were analyzed. Body temperature and haptoglobin concentration dropped between Day 0 and 4 in both CD and C, approaching the level of CTR. The cure rate at Day 7 (body temperature < 39.0 °C) was 65 (CD) and 55% (C), without statistical difference. Neither cow activity nor milk production differed among the three groups. Reproductive performances in both CD and C were similar to CTR, but CD cows were 2.8 times more likely to be pregnant within 120 DIM than C, becoming pregnant about 14 days sooner. Both treatments (CD and C) have been effective in bringing the cows back to health conditions (CTR), and further studies would be needed to confirm the positive effect observed for CD on days open of the affected cows.

Effects of extended voluntary waiting period from calving until first insemination on body condition, milk yield, and lactation persistency

A 1-yr calving interval (CInt) is usually associated with maximized milk output, due to the calving-related peak in milk yield. Extending CInt could benefit cow health and production efficiency due to fewer transition periods per unit of time. Extending CInt can affect lactation performance by fewer days dry per year, delayed pregnancy effect on milk yield, and greater milk solid yield in late lactation. This study first investigated the effects of 3 different voluntary waiting periods (VWP) from calving until first insemination on body weight, body condition, milk yield, and lactation persistency. Second, individual cow characteristics in early lactation were identified that contributed to milk yield and persistency of cows with different VWP. Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (n = 154) within 1 herd were blocked for parity, calving season, and expected milk yield. Cows were randomly assigned within the blocks to 1 of 3 VWP (50, 125, or 200 d: VWP50, VWP125, or VWP200, respectively) and monitored through 1 complete lactation and the first 6 wk of the subsequent lactation, or until culling. Minimum and mean CInt (384 vs. 452 vs. 501 d for VWP50 vs. VWP125 vs. VWP200) increased with increasing VWP, but maximum CInt was equal for the 3 VWP. Fat- and protein-corrected milk yield (FPCM) was analyzed weekly. Milk yield and FPCM were also expressed per day of CInt, to compare yields of cows with different VWP. Persistency was determined between d 100 and d 200 of the lactation, as well as between d 100 and dry-off. Values are presented as least squares means ± standard error of the mean. During the first 44 wk of lactation, VWP did not affect FPCM yield in both primiparous and multiparous cows. The VWP did not affect milk yield per day of CInt. The VWP did not affect FPCM yield per day of calving interval for primiparous cows. Multiparous cows in VWP125 had FPCM yield per day of CInt similar to that of VWP50. Multiparous cows in VWP200 had lower FPCM yield per day of CInt compared with VWP50 (27.2 vs. 30.4 kg/d). During the last 6 wk before dry-off, cows in VWP125 had lower yield compared with cows in VWP50, which could benefit their udder health in the dry period and after calving. Persistency was better for cows in VWP200 compared with cows in VWP50 (-0.05 vs. -0.07 kg/d). Body weight was not different among VWP groups. Multiparous cows in VWP200 had a higher body condition score in the last 3 mo before dry-off and the first 6 wk of the next lactation, compared with multiparous cows in VWP125 and VWP50. The VWP could be extended from 50 d to 125 d without an effect on daily yield per day of calving interval. Extending VWP until 200 d for primiparous cows did not affect their daily milk yield, but multiparous cows with a 200-d VWP had a reduced milk yield per day of calving interval and an increased body condition in late lactation and the subsequent lactation, compared with multiparous cows with a 50-d VWP.

Lunar Cycle Influences Reproductive Performance of Crossbred Brahman Cows Under Tropical Conditions

Evidence has accumulated over the years indicating that the moon influences some aspects of the reproductive activity in animals and humans. However, little is known about the influence of the lunar cycle on the reproductive performance of cows under tropical conditions, where the environment strongly affects reproduction. This retrospective study was conducted with the aim of assessing the influence of the lunar cycle on some reproductive traits of tropical crossbred cows managed in a pasture-based system. Data from 5869 reproductive records from two commercial farms localized in the Maracaibo Lake Basin of Zulia State, Venezuela, were analyzed. Variables studied were first service conception rate, calving frequency, first postpartum estrous frequency, and pregnancy frequency. In addition to the lunar cycle, the effects of farm, season, and predominant breed were also considered. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and general linear model from SAS. First service conception was affected by lunar phases and predominant breed, but not by farm or season. For frequencies of calving, first postpartum estrus, and pregnancy, there was no main effect of farm, season, and predominant breed, whereas the effect of lunar phases was highly significant. First service conception was significantly greater in waning than in crescent phase of the lunar cycle. Frequencies of calving, first estrus, and pregnancy were highly correlated and showed greater figures around full moon and new moon. In conclusion, lunar cycle influenced first service conception, attaining greater values in the waning phase of the moon cycle. Frequencies of calving, first postpartum estrus, and pregnancy in crossbred cows showed a clear bimodal rhythm, whose greatest values coincided with new moon and full moon.

Examination of oestrus-dependent alterations of bovine cervico-vaginal mucus glycosylation for potential as optimum fertilisation indicators

Oestrus is the period in the sexual cycle of female mammals where they become most receptive to mating and are most fertile. Efficient detection of oestrus is a key component in successful reproductive livestock management programmes. Oestrus detection in cattle is most often performed by visual observation, such as mounting behaviour and standing heat, to facilitate more successful prediction of optimal time points for artificial insemination. This time-consuming method requires a skilled, diligent observer. Biological measurements using easily accessible biomolecules in the cervico-vaginal mucus could provide an alternative strategy to physical methods of oestrus detection, providing an inexpensive means of rapidly and accurately assessing the onset of oestrus. In this study, glycosylation changes in cervico-vaginal mucus from three heifers following oestrus induction were investigated as a proof of concept to assess whether potential glycosylation-based trends could be useful for oestrus stage indication. Mucus collected at different time points following oestrus induction was immobilised in a microarray format and its glycosylation interrogated with a panel of fluorescently labelled lectins, carbohydrate-binding proteins with different specificities. Individual animal-specific glycosylation patterns were observed, however each pattern followed a similar trend around oestrus. This unique oestrus-associated glycosylation was identified by a combination of relative binding of the lectins SNA-I and WFA for each animal. This alteration in cervico-vaginal mucus glycosylation could potentially be exploited in future to more accurately identify optimal fertilisation intervention points compared to visual signs. More effective oestrus biomarkers will lead to more successful livestock reproductive programmes, decreasing costs and animal stress.

Derivation of economic values for German dairy breeds by means of a bio-economic model-with special emphasis on functional traits

To assess the economic importance of breeding traits, economic values (EV) were derived for 3 German dairy cattle breeds: German Holstein (HOL), Angler (ANG), and Red and White Dual-Purpose (RDN). For that purpose, the stochastic bio-economic model SimHerd (SimHerd A/S, Viborg, Denmark) was used, which simulates the expected monetary gain in dairy herds. The EV was calculated as the alteration in average net return of the herd responding to a marginal change in the trait of interest. When deriving EV using SimHerd, economic consequences resulting from changes in the age structure of a dairy herd (i.e., structural herd effects) are considered. However, this requires the simulation of relationships between traits in the bio-economic model. To avoid double counting, the EV of a trait was corrected for effects from alterations in correlated traits using multiple regression analysis. The EV were derived for 23 traits in terms of production, conformation and workability, dairy health, calf survival, and reproduction performance. Furthermore, the relative economic importance of the breeding traits was calculated. Relative emphasis on production was between 39.9 and 44.4% in the breeds studied. Total costs per case of ketosis and metritis ranged from €167 to €196 and €173 to €182, respectively. Highest marginal EV of direct health traits were found for mastitis (€257 to €271 per case) and lameness (€270 to €310 per case). Consequently, relative emphasis on direct health traits was between 15.7 and 17.9%. The EV of reproduction performance showed largest differences among the cattle breeds. Overall relative emphasis on reproduction was 10.5% in HOL, 10.8% in ANG, and 6.5% in RDN. The relative economic importance of cow mortality ranged from 15.5 to 16.0% across the breeds. Collectively, the study showed the high economic importance of functional traits in the cattle breeds studied.

A deterministic simulation model for the evaluation of reproductive performance in Thoroughbred mares

The objective of the present study was to develop a deterministic simulation model for evaluating the reproductive performance of Thoroughbred mares. As an application, the model was used to estimate the herd level asymptotic foaling percentage (AFP) for evaluating the performance of mares in stabilized mare herds using the convergent method for estimating a steady-state distribution of mares. In this model, it was assumed that the mares were mated only during the breeding season. The effects of early pregnancy loss and fetal loss on reproductive performance were investigated. The sensitivities of AFP to changes in conception rate (CR), early pregnancy loss rate (EPLR), fetal loss rate (FLR), and postpartum mating interval (PMI) were examined. Furthermore, the AFPs were compared for two types of postpartum first mating schedules: mating during the first postpartum estrus cycle (foal heat) and first mating during the subsequent cycle. The results indicated that AFP was sensitive to changes in EPLR, FLR, and CR. The comparison of the two types of postpartum first mating schedules showed that AFP after foal heat mating was higher than after the subsequent estrus mating even with the decrease in reproductive parameters caused by foal heat mating in the model. In addition, even if mares did not mate during foal heat, AFP could be improved by shortening the estrus cycle with the administration of PGF_2α.

Artificial lactation by exogenous hormone treatment in non-pregnant sows

This study aimed to determine if lactation can be induced by exogenous hormonal treatment in non-pregnant sows. In experiment 1, pseudopregnant animals were divided into four groups and given: 1) 5 mg of estradiol dipropionate (EDP) 5 days before (n = 4), 2) 5 mg of EDP 10 days before (n = 3), 3) 10 mg of EDP 5 days before (n = 3) or 4) 10 mg of EDP 10 days (n = 3) before PGF2α treatment. Artificial lactation was induced in seven pseudopregnant sows (53.8%) by exogenous hormonal treatment. There was no significant effect of either an increased EDP dosage or interval from the EDP treatment to PGF2α treatment on the induction rate of artificial lactation. In experiment 2, milk samples were collected from artificial lactating and natural lactating sows (n = 6). IgG and IgA levels in the milk collected from both groups were significantly associated with time during the experimental period. Milk IgG levels 24 h after PGF2α treatment in artificial lactating sows were higher than those in the colostrum of lactating sows. In experiment 3, hormonal profiles in pseudopregnant sows with (n = 3) or without (n = 3) EDP treatment were determined. There was a significant difference in estradiol-17β levels on days 8, 7 and 5 before PGF2α treatment between groups. Progesterone and prolactin concentrations did not differ between groups. The present study revealed for the first time that lactation could be induced by exogenous hormonal treatment in non-pregnant sows and that the milk collected from these sows contained high immunoglobulin levels.

The economic value of days open in Holstein cows in Japan based on simulated changes in conception rate

Increasing herd-life length and culling parity with increasing conception rate (CR) is necessary to increase lifetime profit from dairy cow production. Economic values of days open (DO) were determined by calculating changes in fertility traits, herd-life length, and milk yield when the simulated CR were changed in increments of 1% from -5% to 5% from the basal levels, which were obtained for Hokkaido and regions other than Hokkaido separately. When CR increased, number of artificial inseminations, DO, and milking length decreased. Furthermore, culling parity, and annual milk yield increased. Herd-life length increased in Hokkaido and decreased in the other regions. The economic values of CR were 1,623.8 to 946.8 yen and of DO were 857.4 to 399.0 yen. Relative economic values of milk yield to days open per genetic standard deviation were higher in the other regions than in Hokkaido where the economic effect of selection for DO was expected to be equal to selection for 305-day milk yield and herd life. If the survival rate of multipara cows in the other regions increases, then the economic value of DO would similarly increase in Hokkaido.

Estimating the net return of a remote calving alarm system in a dairy farm

The aim of the study was to evaluate the net return of the implementation of a remote calving monitoring system for obstetrical and neonatal assistance on the herd economy in a dairy farm model. A total of 680 parturitions over a 7-yr period were evaluated. Age at first calving was restricted from 23 to 27 mo for primiparous cows to be included. Among groups of cows that were ready to calve in a 15-d interval, primiparous and multiparous were randomly assigned to the experimental group and monitored through a calving alarm system, whereas the others accounted for controls. Final parturition groups were as follows: control primiparous (CPP, n = 218), control multiparous (CM, n = 345), monitored primiparous (MPP, n = 56), and monitored multiparous (MM, n = 61). Monitored groups received prompt calving assistance and first neonatal care, whereas the presence of farm personnel was discontinuous for controls. A biological model was built considering significant differences in calf loss, early culling, milk production, and days open between groups. Then, a partial budget model was used to estimate costs and net return on a simulated herd of 100 lactating cows. Incidence of calf death was greater in control groups (11.06% and 10.73% in CPP and CM, respectively) compared with monitored cows (0.00% and 1.69% in MPP and MM, respectively). Multiparous cows with calf loss had increased relative risk (relative risk = 3.487) for early culling compared with multiparous counterparts with no neonatal loss. Daily milk production in the first 2 mo was 3.79 kg greater in multiparous cows with no dead calf, compared with their counterparts. A significant difference in median days open was found in MPP and CPP (118 and 148 d, respectively). In the final economic model, different simulations were analyzed. They were created assuming different prices or hypothesizing calving monitoring only in primiparous animals. The model estimated different, but always positive, net return. In conclusion, implementing a calving alarm system led to a net return from €37 to 90 per cow per year (€1 = US$1.15 at the time of the study). However, the device alone is not sufficient: it must be supported by qualified calving monitoring and assistance. Optimized personnel presence in the calving area at the right time leads to prompt calving and neonatal calf assistance and colostrum feeding within the first hours of life, thus reducing calf death and days open, and increasing milk production.

Initial assessment of the economic burden of major parasitic helminth infections to the ruminant livestock industry in Europe

We report a European wide assessment of the economic burden of gastrointestinal nematodes, Fasciola hepatica (common liver fluke) and Dictyocaulus viviparus (bovine lungworm) infections to the ruminant livestock industry. The economic impact of these parasitic helminth infections was estimated by a deterministic spreadsheet model as a function of the proportion of the ruminant population exposed to grazing, the infection frequency and intensity, the effect of the infection on animal productivity and mortality and anthelmintic treatment costs. In addition, we estimated the costs of anthelmintic resistant nematode infections and collected information on public research budgets addressing helminth infections in ruminant livestock. The epidemiologic and economic input data were collected from international databases and via expert opinion of the Working Group members of the European Co-operation in Science and Technology (COST) action COMbatting Anthelmintic Resistance in ruminants (COMBAR). In order to reflect the effects of uncertainty in the input data, low and high cost estimates were obtained by varying uncertain input data arbitrarily in both directions by 20 %. The combined annual cost [low estimate-high estimate] of the three helminth infections in 18 participating countries was estimated at € 1.8 billion [€ 1.0-2.7 billion]. Eighty-one percent of this cost was due to lost production and 19 % was attributed to treatment costs. The cost of gastrointestinal nematode infections with resistance against macrocyclic lactones was estimated to be € 38 million [€ 11-87 million] annually. The annual estimated costs of helminth infections per sector were € 941 million [€ 488 - 1442 million] in dairy cattle, € 423 million [€ 205-663 million] in beef cattle, € 151million [€ 90-213 million] in dairy sheep, € 206 million [€ 132-248 million] in meat sheep and € 86 million [€ 67-107 million] in dairy goats. Important data gaps were present in all phases of the calculations which lead to large uncertainties around the estimates. Accessibility of more granular animal population datasets at EU level, deeper knowledge of the effects of infection on production, levels of infection and livestock grazing exposure across Europe would make the largest contribution to improved burden assessments. The known current public investment in research on helminth control was 0.15 % of the estimated annual costs for the considered parasitic diseases. Our data suggest that the costs of enzootic helminth infections which usually occur at high prevalence annually in ruminants, are similar or higher than reported costs of epizootic diseases. Our data can support decision making in research and policy to mitigate the negative impacts of helminth infections and anthelmintic resistance in Europe, and provide a baseline against which to measure future changes.

Comparison of behavioral patterns of dairy cows with natural estrus and induced ovulation detected by an ear-tag based accelerometer

Dairy farms face many challenges and changes. With increasing herd sizes and fewer farmers or employees per cow, new strategies to maintain or improve reproductive management are required. One of the major challenges is to detect cows in estrus and to estimate the perfect time for artificial insemination (AI). Several estrus and ovulation synchronization programs with timed AI as well as estrus detection aids, e.g., tail-paint, pedometer, accelerometer, and others are available. A combination of ovulation synchronization programs and technical solutions, however, has rarely been tested. This study was designed to gain insights into behavioral patterns of cows subjected to an Ovsynch program and to test if behavioral data could be used to optimize the timing of insemination within an Ovsynch program. In this study, we used an ear-tag based 3D-accelerometer system (SMARTBOW, Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) to generate data of behavioral patterns, i.e., rumination and activity. In Part 1 of this study, behavioral patterns during the peri-estrus period were compared between cows with physiological estrus and cows subjected to an Ovsynch protocol. On the day before estrus and on the day of estrus/AI, cows with natural estrus showed a clear drop in rumination and "inactivity" and an increase in "high activity", based on an algorithm of the accelerometer system, whereas, cows in the Ovsynch protocol showed only minor changes in behavioral patterns. In Part 2, we analyzed behavioral patterns between synchronized cows that became pregnant after AI and synchronized cows that remained open. As a result, no differences were detected between these two Ovsynch groups before AI. Thus, in this study we found no evidence that behavioral patterns can be used to improve conception rates within an Ovsynch protocol.
