Abstract
Fertility is one of the most economically important traits in farm animals, due to the direct and indirect costs associated to low pregnancy rates. Thus, one of the priority goals in animal reproduction is to predict the performance that the semen doses will have in vivo based on the quality values obtained in laboratory assays. Attempts have been made for getting a predictive model of fertility of frozen-thawed sperm in dairy goats, but similar studies have not been conducted for chilled goat buck sperm doses that are mostly used for artificial insemination in many countries including Spain. We study how parameters of in vitro sperm quality and characteristics of Murciano-Granadina dairy goats may affect the in vivo fertility obtained after artificial insemination with semen doses chilled at 4 °C. Moreover, this information was used for obtaining predictive models of the fertility. Sixty-three ejaculates from 13 males were used to prepare chilled doses for the insemination of 495 goats over 13 sessions. Fresh and chilled sperm were evaluated for motility and plasma membrane integrity with a computer-assisted sperm analysis system and flow cytometry, respectively. Fertility was determined at parturition, according to the kidding goats. Overall fertility was 59.6%. Pearson's correlation coefficients between in vivo fertility and quality variables of fresh sperm were not significant and were low (below 0.34 in absolute value) for chilled sperm. Females' characteristics had a low negative impact on fertility (correlation coefficients of -0.19 with age, -0.20 with parturitions and -0.11 with total milk yield obtained in the best lactation). Fixed and mixed logistic regression procedures were used trying to explain the fertility results. None of the models accurately predicted fertility, but the best models included the percentage of total motile sperm or average path velocity from fresh semen, age of the females and the session effect (uncontrolled environmental effects). These analyses showed that primiparous goats were 2.42 times more likely to get pregnant than goats that had kidded four or more times. Our field assay data on fertility in Murciano-Granadina dairy goats highlighted the importance of making quality controls of sperm, of choosing the doses presenting high percentages of motile sperm exhibiting regular trajectories and of selecting the youngest goats for AI, after their first kidding. Efforts should continue to obtain better predictive models for improving fertility in goat dairy herds.

Abstract
Sperm motility is one of the most widely used parameters of sperm quality. Computer-aided sperm motility analysis (CASA-Mot) systems were developed to reduce the subjectivity of sperm motility assessment, and have had broad scientific and practical acceptance. In this review, the sources of variation and current applications of this technology and its relationships with other sperm quality tests are described in detail. Despite remarkable advances in the technique, there is still great need for standardisation in many species, and the numerous factors that affect the results make it difficult to provide universally accepted criteria for classifying semen samples based on sperm motility characteristics. The main fields for CASA-Mot include the study of male fertility and pathologies, evaluation of the effects of physical and chemical agents, improvement of epidemiological survey studies, more precise calculation of seminal doses for farm animals, realisation of basic studies about sperm function, improvement of sperm technologies such as cryopreservation and quality control analysis. Numerous relationships have been established between CASA-Mot and other sperm quality tests, although most of these parameters are complementary. Future CASA-Mot systems will probably be able to integrate several sperm quality parameters with motility.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of two commercially available semen extenders on the motility of cryopreserved goat sperm and to simplify the cryopreservation protocol. Individual goat ejaculates were split and processed in parallel for freezing in either commercially available soy-based extender (Bioxcell®) or egg yolk-based extender (Irvine TYB). Sperm quality was assessed using total and progressive sperm motility, measured by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Total motility was higher for samples processed in soy-based extender, both at pre-freeze (P = 0.002) and at post-thaw (P < 0.0001). Progressive motility was higher for semen processed in soy extender at post-thaw (P < 0.0001). Approximately 10% of samples processed in egg yolk-based extender had a large (> 50%) reduction in total motility prior to freezing. However, this type of extreme reduction in pre-freeze motility did not occur in semen samples processed in soy extender. In addition, the use of soy-based extender eliminated the need for a time-consuming sperm washing protocol. We concluded that a commercially available soy-based extender was superior to an egg yolk-based extender in preserving motility of cryopreserved goat sperm, using a two-step method.

Abstract
Compararam-se as características cinéticas e morfológicas de espermatozoides caprinos congelados nos meios à base de ACP-101® e TRIS. Os diluentes utilizados foram: ACP-101® (+ 2,5% gema ovo + 7% glicerol) e TRIS (+ 20% gema ovo + 6,8% glicerol). Quarenta e oito ejaculados de quatro bodes foram coletados, avaliados, divididos em duas alíquotas e diluídos nos meios ACP-101® e TRIS, respectivamente, posteriormente congelados e, após 30 dias, descongelados. A avaliação da motilidade espermática por computador foi realizada aos 5, 60 e 120 minutos pós-descongelação. As características de motilidade espermática analisadas foram: motilidade total (MT) (%) e progressiva (MP) (%), velocidades média do trajeto do espermatozoide (VAP) (µm/s) e linear (VSL) (µm/s) e população de espermatozoides rápidos (ER) (%). As avaliações de morfologia espermática quantificaram a porcentagem de espermatozoides normais (N) e as alterações da cabeça (AC), da peça intermediária (API) e do flagelo (AF), aos cinco e 120 minutos pós-descongelação. O diluente TRIS apresentou resultados cinéticos mais elevados que o ACP-101® aos 60 e 120 minutos pós-descongelação. As AC aos 120 minutos pós-descongelação foram mais altas nos espermatozoides congelados em ACP-101®. Conclui-se que o diluente TRIS promoveu maior viabilidade in vitro dos espermatozoides caprinos pós-descongelação.
