Abstract
Background and Aim Pregnancy affects maternal hemodynamics. The changes in autonomic nervous system activity for hemodynamics adaptation in pregnant horses are still unclear. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effect of pregnancy on electrocardiographic, vasovagal tonus index, and echocardiographic variables in horses. Materials and Methods A total of 23 Thai native crossbred mares without any cardiac abnormalities were included in this study. The animals were assigned into two groups, a non-pregnant mare group (n =12) and a pregnant mare group (n = 11). Electrocardiogram recordings (paper speed = 25 mm/s and calibration = 10 mm/mV) were performed to obtain six limb leads (leads I, II, III, aVR, aVL, and aVF). The vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) was calculated to assess variability in heart rate over short periods using just 20 consecutive beats. Cardiac structure and function were evaluated by echocardiography. Results Heart rate, P wave duration, PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval, and T wave duration were significantly different between non-pregnant and pregnant horses (p < 0.05). Pregnant horses had significantly lower VVTI than non-pregnant (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in cardiac structures including % interventricular septum (IVS), % left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW), IVS in diastole, left ventricular internal diameter at end-diastole, LVPW thickness at end-diastole, IVS in systole, left ventricular internal diameter at end-systole, LVPW thickness at end-systole, and left atrium/aortic roots ratio between the two groups. However, the pregnant horses had a significantly higher cardiac output and % ejection fraction than non-pregnant horses (p < 0.05). Conclusion This study provided the first evidence that hemodynamic adaptations during pregnancy modified cardiac conduction, vasovagal tonus index, and echocardiographic variables in horses.

Abstract
Bromocriptine (BRM), a dopamine 2 receptor agonist, is a common drug for inducing estrus in dogs. It is also used for the treatment of some endocrine abnormalities and has some cardiovascular consequences in the patients under treatment. The current study aimed to evaluate its effects on the cardiovascular function of dogs during administration and the subsequent induced estrus cycle. Eight non-pregnant female dogs were assigned into control and treatment groups. The control group (n = 3) were dogs that showed proestrus naturally. The treatment group (n = 5) received oral incremental (μg/kg) doses (100 on days 1 and 2, 200 on days 3, 4, and 400 on days 5 until the proestrus expression) of BRM tablets (2.5 mg; Iran-Hormone Co, Iran). The left ventricle function, carotid blood flow indices, and systolic (SAP) and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressure were recorded every two days. The phases of the cycle were determined using a vaginal smear. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistance index (RI) had a sharp decline following the administration of BRM (P < 0.05). The carotid PSA, EDV, RI, and pulse index were lower during induced estrus compared to the control (p < 0.05). BRM-induced estrus showed a different pattern of changes compared to the normal cycle from day 9 (p < 0.05) onwards. The cardiovascular effects of BRM remained for days after the termination of administration which may interfere with reproductive functions.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate maternal left ventricular (LV) systo-diastolic function using conventional and TDI echocardiography and included 10 healthy Saint-Bernard pregnant bitches. M-mode, peak transmitral flow velocities during early diastole (E) and atrial contraction (A), aortic and pulmonic flow, myocardial performance index (MPI), TDI studies (peak myocardial velocities during early diastole (E’), atrial contraction (A’) and peak systole (S’)), and blood pressure were measured at 21 to 28 (T1), 40 (T2) and 60 (T3) days of gestation and four to eight weeks postpartum (T4). Cardiac output and heart rate were 20% and 9% higher at T3, respectively, compared to T4 (p < 0.01). Lateral S’ was 36% higher at T3 than at T1 (p < 0.05). Changes in diastolic function were demonstrated by 10% lower E wave and 15% A wave at T1, compared to T4 (p < 0.05). E’ and A’ were 23% and 42% higher at T3 compared to T4 (p < 0.01). Both lateral E/E’ and E’/A’ were 6% and 19% lower at T3 compared to T1 (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). At T3, MPI was 51% and 34% lower when compared to T1 or T2 (p < 0.05). The echocardiographic evaluation of maternal cardiac function is important, as structural, and functional changes occur throughout pregnancy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate cardiac morphology, indices of systolic and diastolic function, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and uterine artery resistance index (RI) during normal feline pregnancy. ANIMALS; MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty domestic short-hair pregnant queens, weighing 2.4-3.9 kg. Animals were assessed by two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography, non-invasive SBP measurement, and uterine Doppler ultrasound every 10 days from mating to parturition. RESULTS Interventricular septal thickness at end-diastole and end-systole, left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole, left ventricular free wall thickness at end-diastole and end-systole, fractional shortening, stroke volume, cardiac output (CO), heart rate, and peak velocities of early and late diastolic transmitral flow increased during the second half of gestation, while SBP and RI decreased during the same period (p < 0.01). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Cardiac structure and function varied during normal pregnancy in these queens. Eccentric hypertrophy, increased indices of systolic function, and increased measurements of CO seem to be the consequences of the hemodynamic modifications occurring during pregnancy. The assessment of maternal cardiovascular function may prove a useful screening tool to detect pregnancy complications in feline species.

Abstract
Simple Summary In women, as well as in bitches, pregnancy is associated with the adaptation of the left ventricular function. Pregnancy mainly represents a status of increased volume load of the maternal heart driven by the need to supply an adequate blood flow through an augmented uterine perfusion to the developing fetuses. Consequently, cardiac morpho-functional changes are expected. Cardiac morphology and function in pregnant bitches that would develop complications may differ from those with a normal outcome. Thus, the assessment of the maternal cardiovascular function may be a useful screening tool to detect pregnancy complications in dogs. Few studies investigated the cardiac maternal adaptation in different gestational ages in dogs. Breed is a known source of variation in echocardiographic values; hence, the cardiac performance during pregnancy may also be prone to a breed-related variation. For these purposes, due to possible breed-related variations in cardiac parameters and function, and to the specific predisposition for myocardial diseases, echocardiographic changes along pregnancy in healthy Great Dane bitches were evaluated. A significant effect of the age of gestation on the increase of functional and diastolic parameters and on the decrease of systolic parameters was reported. Abstract Pregnancy is associated with adaptation of the left ventricular (LV) function. Due to differences between breeds in baseline echocardiographic values and specific predispositions for myocardial diseases, breed-specific echocardiographic parameters may be helpful to evaluate whether the systolic function varies during pregnancy. This study enrolled nine healthy Great Dane bitches with uncomplicated pregnancy. Echocardiographic M-mode and B-mode data were collected before ovulation and within 7 days of the predicted parturition term. Evaluated parameters were: LV dimension in diastole (LVd) and systole (LVs), end-diastolic (EDVI) and end-systolic (ESVI) volumes indexed to body surface area (BSA), end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic (ESV), end-point-septal-separation (EPSS), left atrium to aortic root ratio (LA/Ao), sphericity index (SI), ejection fraction (EF), fractional shortening (FS), stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR), and cardiac output (CO). The ANOVA showed a statistical effect of the age of gestation (p < 0.01) on the increase of diastolic dimensions and functional parameters and on the decrease of systolic dimensions. The CO increase parallels the rise in SV and HR (p < 0.01). No statistical differences were observed for EPSS, LA/Ao, and SI. The changes in cardiac chambers and function are likely to reflect maternal adaptation to allow the fetal development in uncomplicated pregnancy. The present study provides specific echocardiographic values in uncomplicated pregnancy of Great Danes, showing that the systolic function is enhanced and that the increase in preload, observed during gestation, is the likely mechanism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was to characterize changes in maternal cardiovascular variables throughout the reproductive cycle in healthy bitches and determine whether magnitude of pregnancy-induced changes correlates to litter size. ANIMALS Eleven client-owned breeding bitches were included in the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bitches were enrolled prospectively and followed up longitudinally throughout a single reproductive cycle. Physical examination, echocardiography, blood pressure analysis, and plasma volume estimation were performed during proestrus, diestrus (early and late pregnancy), and anestrus. Fetal echocardiography was performed during late pregnancy. Data were compared across visits using a linear mixed-effects model, and correlation between variables was assessed. RESULTS Compared with proestrus, no significant changes were observed at any phase of the cycle in heart rate, blood pressure, echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular size or function, or echocardiographic calculations of stroke volume or cardiac output. Estimated plasma volume increased by 29.6% in early pregnancy (p < 0.001) and 70.7% in late pregnancy (p < 0.001). Fetal echocardiography was feasible in a subset of fetuses for each bitch. There was a significant correlation between estimated total fetal cardiac output and late pregnancy increase in maternal cardiac output (p = 0.0025). The incidence of physiologic heart murmurs ranged from 5 of 11 (45%) bitches in proestrus to 2 of 11 (18%) bitches in late pregnancy, attributed to variations in aortic outflow velocity. CONCLUSIONS Hemodynamic alterations in pregnant bitches do not result in consistently detectable echocardiographic changes, suggesting that cardiac screening could be diagnostic at any time during a reproductive cycle. Physiologic heart murmurs were common in this study population and not obviously associated with the reproductive cycle.

Abstract
Ultrasonography is the imaging technology of choice for the evaluation of the reproduction system and of pregnancy in both humans and animals. Over the past 10 years, there have been significant technological improvements of the equipment, while new technologies have been developed. Doppler, contrast-enhanced ultrasonography, elastography, and 3D/4D ultrasonography are advanced ultrasound techniques that have been designed as methods to increase the diagnostic sensitivity of two-dimensional (b-mode) ultrasound, and not as stand-alone tests. The basic physics as well as the advantages and limitations of these advanced ultrasound methods are briefly described. In the reproductive diagnostics of small animals, these techniques have gained an increased popularity as proved by the increased publication of several reports that are also briefly summarized in this review. Clinical applicability is to date limited because of a lack of research on the diagnostic value in concrete situations. Future research projects should focus also on standardization of the used techniques, on determination of thresholds to discriminate between healthy or diseases or fertile versus infertile and on the predictive value of advanced ultrasound findings. Continuing development and optimization of different ultrasound techniques as well as the increase of related scientific interest and worldwide research promises that the clinical interest on the use of advanced ultrasound techniques will increase in future.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consequences of the estrous cycle and gestation on the cardiovascular system of bitches evaluated through echocardiographic assessment. Fifteen healthy pregnant bitches aged 2 to 6 years and weighing 8.8 ± 2.5 kg were included in the study. Heart rate and blood pressure were clinically evaluated. M-mode, spectral, and tissue Doppler-echocardiography assessments were performed during the anestrous and estrous stages, every 15 days during pregnancy (15, 30, 45, and 60 days), and 45 days postpartum. The data for evaluated variables were submitted for statistical analysis. Heart rate (P = 0.286) and systolic blood pressure (P = 0.686) were not changed as a result of pregnancy or estrus, while ejection fraction (P = 0.0016) and fractional shortening (P = 0.00004) changed. The variables transmitral flow, isovolumetric relaxation time, aortic and pulmonary flow, and some variables related to myocardium movement obtained via tissue Doppler assessment varied (P < 0.05) among the reproductive periods studied. In conclusion, gestation resulted in changes in echocardiography variables, and consequently, on maternal hemodynamics, with myocardial contractility increasing during pregnancy, resulting in greater systolic efficiency and ventricular compliance.
