Abstract
Reviewing the current state of knowledge on reproductive performance and productive traits in rams has many advantages. First, the compilation of this information will serve as a literature resource for scientists conducting research around the world and will contribute to the understanding of the data collected and interpreted by researchers on the different hormonal strategies used to improve reproductive performance in rams. Second, it will allow scientists to identify current knowledge gaps and set future research priorities in ram reproduction. Rams play an important role in the global flock economy, but their reproductive analysis has been limited in the use of hormonal technologies to increase the productivity of sheep flocks. In this review, we cite the most important works on six hormones that, in one way or another, modify the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis, at different doses, in and out of the reproductive season, breeds, application methods, among other factors. The overall aim is to increase the reproductive efficiency of rams in different scenarios and, in some cases, of other species due to the lack of limited information on rams.

Abstract
Current study hypothesized that dietary l-carnitine (LC) inclusion during the mating period ameliorates both metabolic status and reproductive performance of ewes. Seventy Baluchi ewes (52 ± 4.2 kg of bodyweight and 18 ± 6 months old of age) were enrolled in this study. Animals were randomly allocated into two dietary treatments, control (only basal diet) or basal diet plus supplementation with a rumen-protected LC (Carneon 20 Rumin-pro; 20% LC; Kaesler Nutrition GmbH) at the rate of 10 g/head/day from 21 days before until 35 days after introducing rams to the ewes (MP). Feed intake was monitored by subtracting the ort from feed offered. Blood sample collection was conducted on Days -10, +10 and +20 relative to MP. Pregnancy was confirmed on Day 30 post-MP. Feed intake of the ewes in the LC group was higher than the control (p < 0.05). LC supplementation increased the cholesterol concentration in the ewes (p < 0.05). Blood urea concentration of animals in the LC group was significantly lower than the control (p < 0.05). The mRNA expression of toll-like receptor 4 was evidently lower in animals supplemented with LC than the control (p < 0.05). Both lambing and fecundity rates in the LC group tended to be higher compared with the control. LC supplementation showed potential to alter certain metabolites in the ewes. A tendency for higher lambing rate may partly be driven by dams efficient energy partitioning to support foetal growth and maintaining pregnancy.

Abstract
Artificial insemination (AI) plays a vital role in animal breeding programs. AI is applied to enhance animal genetics and facilitate the widespread integration of desirable characteristics with a high potential for productivity. However, in sheep, this biotechnology is not commonly practicable due to multi-factorial challenges, resulting in inconsistent outcomes and unpredictable results. Thoughtful selection of semen donors and recipients based on genetic merit deeply impacts ovine AI outcomes. Additionally, endogenous factors such as breed, age, fertility traits, genetic disorders, and cervical anatomy in ewes contribute to ovine AI success. Extensive research has studied exogenous influences on sexual behavior, reproductive health, and hormonal regulation, all impacting ovine AI success. These exogenous factors include techniques like estrus induction, synchronization, semen handling methods (fresh/chilled/frozen), and insemination methods (cervical/laparoscopic), as well as nutritional factors and climatic conditions. This overview of the literature highlights the endogenous and exogenous challenges facing successful ovine AI and proposes strategies and best practices for improvement. This paper will serve as a guide for understanding and optimizing the success of ovine AI.

Abstract
The aim was to characterize and assess the reproductive performance of a long interval prostaglandin (PG)-based protocol for timed AI (TAI) at different times. During breeding season three experiments were done involving 622 Merino ewes, 11 rams, and five androgenized wethers per 100 ewes. All ewes were estrus synchronized with two PG injections 15-day apart (PG15): Day -15 and 0 (Hour 0). Estrous distribution respect to Hour 0, estrous response and synchrony after Hour 0, and interval from Hour 0 to estrus detection (PG-estrus) was evaluated (Experiment I; n = 105 ewes). Interval from estrus detection to ovulation (estrus-ovulation) and from Hour 0 to ovulation (PG-ovulation) was determined (Experiment II; n = 12 ewes). Visual-physical score of cervical mucus at TAI, non-return to service to Day 23 (NRR23), fertility, prolificacy, and fecundity to Day 60 in four cervical fresh semen TAI groups was evaluated (Experiment III; n = 505 ewes; 107 nulliparous-398 multiparous). Three groups with single service at 56 (Control), 44 or 68, and one with double service at 44 and 68 ± 1.5 h after Hour 0 (PG15-56, PG15-44, PG15-68, and PG15-44/68 groups, respectively) were tested. Ninety-eight-point one percent of the ewes showed estrus from Hour -48 up to 84 respects to Hour 0. Twenty percent of them showed estrus from Hour -48 up to 0, and 78.1 % from Hour 12 up to 84 (Experiment I). The largest proportion of ewes in estrus was observed between Hour 36 and 60 (80.5 %). PG-estrus interval was 54.1 ± 10 h (means ± SD). Estrus-ovulation interval was 32.4 ± 5.8 h, and PG-ovulation interval was 77.0 ± 16.6 h (Experiment II). Ewe parity did not affect any of the reproductive variables (P > 0.05; Experiment III). There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) between Control and different groups in mucus score (2.18 ± 0.08, 2.02 ± 0.07, 2.14 ± 0.09, 2.25 ± 0.10), NRR23 (76.0, 71.9, 78.6, 79.4 %) or fertility (66.4, 64.1, 66.7, 73.8 %; PG15-56, PG15-44, PG15-68 or PG15-44/68 groups, respectively). Prolificacy in PG15-44 group was lower (1.07 ± 0.03; P < 0.05) than other groups (1.27 ± 0.05, 1.23 ± 0.05, 1.20 ± 0.04), and fecundity than PG15-44/68 group (0.84, 0.69, 0.82, 0.89), without differences among other groups (PG15-56, PG15-44, PG15-68 or PG15-44/68 groups, respectively). We concluded that any time between 56 and 68 h after PG15 protocol could be used to perform cervical TAI using fresh semen, without benefits of a double TAI service at 44 and 68 h.

Abstract
Background and Aim Estrus synchronization of ewes has been accomplished using several protocols with various degrees of success in improving reproductive efficiency and obtaining the most effective protocol used in sheep farming. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of three treatment protocols and to record the intensity and duration of estrus signs and pregnancy rate in Barbados Black Belly (BBB) sheep. Materials and Methods Thirty-two primipara BBB ewes aged 18-24 months were equally divided into three treatment groups. T1: the ewes were injected intramuscularly with 2 mL Lutalyse (PGF2α) (10 mg) on days 0 and 10. T2: 1 mL Fertiline (50 μg; Gonadorelin acetate) on day 0 and 2 mL lutalyse (10 mg) on day 7. T3: 1 mL fertiline (50 μg) on day 0, 2 mL lutalyse (10 mg) on day 7, and 1 mL Fertiline (50 μg) on day 9. Estrus response was assessed using naturally mating rams and ewes. Pregnancy was determined using ultrasonography between 55 and 80 days after the last hormonal injection. The following estrus signs were noted: Swollen vulva, mucus discharge, sniffing, excitement, loss of appetite, mounting, and rapid tail movement. Results Of the expressed signs, swollen vulva was most frequent, whereas loss of appetite and mucus discharge were the least overt signs recorded. The estrus response (%), onset (%), and duration (h) in ewe synchronization of the three treatment protocols were 100%, 58.3 ± 23.4%, and 48.0 ± 18.2 h (T1), 100%, 61.7 ± 41.2%, and 45.0 ± 27.0 h (T2), and 37.5%, 32.1 ± 1.7%, and 29.2 ± 1.25 h (T3), respectively. The pregnancy rates were 87.5%, 87.5%, 37.5%, and 50.0% in T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively. Conclusion Prostaglandin F2α+PGF2α and GnRH+PGF2α synchronization protocols were more effective in the fertilization of BBB ewes with better expression of estrus signs compared with the GnRH+PGF2α+GnRH (OVS) protocol.

Abstract
During the sheep breeding season, ovulatory follicles vary widely in age at pessary removal impacting both the timing of oestrus and pregnancy rates following artificial insemination (AI). Ovulatory follicles that emerge between days 7 to 9 of the pessary period are associated with higher fertility whilst those that emerge earlier or later are associated with lower fertility. In this study, two strategies to improve the success of AI by controlling the development of the ovulatory follicle were examined. In the first, ewes were treated with PGF2α at either -12 and/or +6 days (experiment 1) or -27 days (experiment 2) relative to pessary insertion to control the time of emergence of the ovulatory follicle. In the second, ewes were treated with eCG (400 IU per ewe) at either 0 h, -6 h or -12 h relative to pessary removal (experiment 3) to improve the development of young ovulatory follicles. PGF2α administered on day -27 increased the percentage of pregnant ewes by 17.8% and the number of foetuses per 100 ewes inseminated by 33.9%. PGF2α treatment at other times had either no effect or reduced fertility. During the breeding season, treatment with eCG at -12 h improved the synchrony of oestrus, reduced the size of the ovulatory follicle but did not improve pregnancy rate compared with other treatments. Treatment had no effect during the non-breeding season, supporting earlier findings that the quality of young ovulatory follicles differs during the year. In conclusion, PGF2α treatment 27 days before pessary insertion provides a new and cheap strategy to improve the success of fixed-time AI programs.

Abstract
Booroola fecundity (FecB) gene, a mutant of bone morphogenetic protein 1B (BMPR-1B) that was discovered in Booroola Merino, was the first prolificacy gene identified in sheep related to increased ovulation rate and litter size. The mechanism of FecB impact on reproduction is unclear. METHODS In this study, adult Han ewes with homozygous FecB(B)/FecB(B) mutations (Han BB group) and ewes with FecB(+)/FecB(+) wildtype (Han ++ group) were selected. Methylated DNA immunoprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing (MeDIP-seq) was used to identify differences in methylated genes in ovary tissue. RESULTS We examined differences in DNA methylation patterns between HanBB and Han ++ sheep. In both sheep, methylated reads were mainly distributed at the gene body regions, CpG islands and introns. The differentially methylated genes were enriched in neurotrophy in signaling pathway, Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, oocyte meiosis, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathway, etc. Differentially-methylated genes were co-analyzed with differentially-expressed mRNAs. Several genes which could be associated with female reproduction were identified, such as FOXP3 (forkhead box P3), TMEFF2 (Transmembrane Protein with EGF Like and Two Follistatin Like Domains 2) and ADAT2 (Adenosine Deaminase TRNA Specific 2). CONCLUSIONS We constructed a MeDIP-seq based methylomic study to investigate the ovarian DNA methylation differences between Small-Tail Han sheep with homozygous FecB mutant and wildtype, and successfully identified FecB gene-associated differentially-methylated genes. This study has provided information with which to understand the mechanisms of FecB gene-induced hyperprolificacy in sheep.

Abstract
To determine the effect of the combination of melatonin implants and prostaglandin (PG) F2α on reproductive performance in the late breeding season (Dec at the northern hemisphere), 500 Lacaune ewes were divided into four groups. On day 0 (7 Nov), 150 ewes were treated with a melatonin (M) implant. From that group, 64 ewes (M + 1PGF group) were injected with 10-mg prostaglandin (PG) F2α 34 d after melatonin implantation (11 Dec). The remaining 86 ewes (M group) were treated with melatonin, only. Another group of 75 ewes (2PGF group) was treated with double injection of PGF2α (9 days between the first and second application) (2 and 11 Dec), and 75 non-treated ewes (C group) were the control group. The remaining 200 ewes of the flock were not considered in the study. Rams (n = 23) were introduced on 11 Dec. The percentage of prolificacy, lambing and fecundity rates were calculated. Lambing rate did not differ among groups (M: 79%; M + 1PGF: 78%; 2PGF: 69%; C: 71%). The M + 1PGF group had a higher % of prolificacy than the 2PGF group (P < 0.10) and the C group (P = 0.06) (M: 1.65 ± 0.07; M + 1PGF: 1.74 ± 0.09; 2PGF: 1.54 ± 0.08; C: 1.54 ± 0.07 lambs/lambing) (P < 0.05), and a higher fecundity than the 2PGF group (P < 0.05) and the C group (P < 0.10) (M: 1.30 ± 0.09; M + 1PGF: 1.36 ± 0.11; 2PGF: 1.07 ± 0.10; C: 1.08 ± 0.09 lambs/ewe). Ewes implanted with melatonin had significantly higher prolificacy (1.69 ± 0.06 lambs/lambing) (P < 0.05) and fecundity (1.33 ± 0.07 lambs/ewe) (P = 0.01) than did ewes that did not receive melatonin (1.54 ± 0.04 and 1.08 ± 0.04, resp.). In conclusion, melatonin implants increased the number of lambs born per ewe in a late-autumn mating season, and the effect was greatest if it was given in combination with PGF2α administration at ram introduction.

Abstract
The main aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of GnRH administration on day five after mating as well as PGF2α injection at the time of CIDR removal on the reproductive performance of Ghezel ewes. Estrus synchronization was performed using an intravaginal application of CIDR for 14 days and injection of 500 IU of PMSG at the time of CIDR removal. A total of 114 healthy fat-tailed ewes were randomly allotted into three groups as follow: control group (n = 35), did not receive any additional treatment; PG group (n = 44), each ewe received a dose of PGF2α at the time of CIDR removal; and PG+GnRH group (n = 35), the ewes received a dose of PGF2α at the time of CIDR removal and a single dose of GnRH, five days post-mating (post-conceptional day (PCD)- 5). Body condition score (BCS) of total ewes was determined at the time of CIDR insert. Blood samples were collected on PCD-19 for determining the serum progesterone levels. All the ewes were examined by transrectal ultrasonography 30-35 days after mating for pregnancy diagnosis. The serum values for P4 concentration were in control, PG and PG+GnRH groups 6.34 ± 1.17, 9.19 ± 2.55 and 10.57 ± 2.0 ng/mL respectively. The PG+GnRH treatment significantly increased the litter size compared to the control group (P = 0.04), but there were no significant differences in another reproductive indices between experimental groups. The multiple birth, twin, fecundity rates and litter size (P = 0.05, p = 0.03 and p = 0.003 respectively) were significantly higher in ewes with BCS > 2 compared to ewes with BCS ≤ 2. It is concluded that GnRH on PCD-5 treatment in addition to PGF2α injection at the time of CIDR removal could improve reproductive performance of Qezel ewes during non-breeding season.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare five protocols of estrous synchronization for Hu ewes to obtain the most effective and economical protocol, to apply the advantageous scheme in large-scale sheep farming. Healthy multiparous Hu ewes (n = 150) were randomly divided into five groups, and all ewes were administered fluorogestone acetate (FGA, 45 mg) vaginal sponge. The sponges of the first three groups (Groups I, II, and III) were removed on the 11th day, and 0.1 mg of PGF2α was injected intramuscularly on the ninth day. Group I received 6 μg of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by intramuscular injection at 36th h after withdrawal of the sponge. Group II was injected 330 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the ninth day. The combination of 6 μg of GnRH and 330 IU of PMSG was treated in Group III at the same time as Group I and Group II. The sponges of the latter two groups (Groups IV and V) were removed on the 13th day, and 330 IU of PMSG was injected intramuscularly simultaneously. PGF2α (0.1 mg) was administered on the 12th day in Group IV. All ewes were detected for estrus at 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h after the sponge removal. The loss of sponge and vaginitis was recorded when the sponge was withdrawn. Cervical artificial insemination (AI) was performed with fresh semen of Dorper rams diluted with skimmed milk. After 30 days of insemination, the conception was detected with a veterinary B-ultrasound scanner. The lambing status of all ewes and the cost of drugs for estrous synchronization in each group were recorded. The results showed the following: (1) on the whole, the average percentage of estrous ewes in the period of 24–36 h and 36–48 h after removal was significantly higher than other three periods and that of the period of 60–72 h was significantly lower than the first three periods after removal; (2) there was no significant difference in percentages of estrous ewes in any of the five time periods, sponge loss rate, vaginitis rate, total percentage of estrous ewes, conception rate, single lambing rate, twinning rate, and multiple lambing rate of ewes among five protocols; (3) total percentage of estrous ewes and conception rate were more than or equal to 80% in the Groups II and III, and the twinning lamb rate of the Group II protocol was 70%; (4) there was no difference in lambing rate of ewes among Groups II, III, IV, and V; (5) the Group III had the highest drug cost of 22.5 CNY. In conclusion, considering the lambing rate, twinning lamb rate, and drug cost for estrous synchronization, Group II was the most advisable for application and promotion in large-scale sheep farms among these five protocols of estrus synchronization.

Abstract
The objective of the current review was to summarize the protocols used for estrous synchronization in ewes during the last two decades. Progesterone (P4) is a major hormone used in most protocols. P4 in the form of a controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR) device, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), and fluorogestone acetates (FGA) has been used for estrous synchronization. Also, gonadotropins such as equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) are often administered at the end of P4-based protocols to improve fertility. Moreover, the administration of prostaglandins (PG) and ram effects have been used for estrus induction and synchronization of ewes. The findings of previous studies indicate that the outcome of administering various synthetics P4 analogues (CIDR, MAP, and FGA) in ewes is comparable in terms of estrous synchronization/induction. The supplementation of P4-based protocols with eCG, however, improves the estrus response and pregnancy rate during breeding and non-breeding season. On the other hand, PG is effective for successful estrous synchronization during the breeding season only. Often, two injections of PG are administered either 11 or 14 days apart along with P4-based protocols to lyse ovine corpus luteum (CL) when it is receptive to PG i.e., 3 days post-ovulation. Alternatively, the "ram effect" has been shown to improve the efficacy of P4-based protocols and can be used as an alternative to eCG in ewes. The current review describes the methods of synchronization and their outcomes during breeding and a non-breeding season in ewes.

Abstract
The ovary is the most important reproductive organ in goats and directly affects the fecundity. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the biological process of oocyte maturation. However, in the context of reproduction in goats, few studies have explored the regulation of lncRNAs. Therefore, we herein used the ovaries of high and low fecundity Leizhou black goats to identify differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) by high-throughput RNA sequencing; moreover, we analyzed the target genes of lncRNAs by functional annotation to explore the role of DElncRNAs in ovarian development. Twenty DElncRNAs were identified, of which six were significantly upregulated and 14 were significantly downregulated in high fecundity goats. Gene Ontology analyses suggested that MSTRG.3782 positively influences the expression of the corresponding gene API5, exerting regulative effects on the development of follicles, through which litter size might show variations. The target gene KRR1 of ENSCHIT00000001883 is significantly enriched in cell components, and ENSCHIT00000001883 may regulate cell growth and thus affect follicular development. Further, as per Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses, MSTRG.2938 was found to be significantly enriched, and we speculate that MSTRG.2938 could regulate ribosomal biogenesis in the pre-snoRNP complex as well as cell transformation in eukaryotes. Quantitative real-time PCR results were consistent with sequencing data. To conclude, our research results indicate that some lncRNAs play a key role in regulating follicle development and cell growth during goat’ s ovarian development.

Treatments with intravaginal sponges for estrous synchronization in ewes: length of the treatment, amount of medroxyprogesterone, and administration of a long-acting progesterone. Abstract
We evaluated if alternative treatments achieve at least similar results as traditional long treatments with intravaginal sponges (IVS) in three experiments considering (1) the use of 6-day treatments associated or not with the administration of PGF2alpha at IVS insertion; (2) a reduction of 50% MAP content in short-term or traditional treatments, with or without change of the IVS 6 days after its insertion; and (3) the substitution of IVS for long-time acting injected progesterone associated with the administration of a PGF2alpha. More ewes came into estrus with long than short IVS treatments, independently of the MAP IVS content. Fewer ewes came into estrus if the IVS containing 30 mg was replaced 6 days after its insertion. The length of the treatment did not affect the conception rate, but the pregnancy rate was greater in 12 than 6 days treatments. The administration of long-acting progesterone did not prevent the lower conception rate associated with the use of PGF2alpha and was less effective to synchronize estrus, but the conception rate did not differ from that of 12d IVS treatments. Overall, MAP content could be decreased without affecting the estrous rate; thereafter, the MAP IVS content should be decreased in the commercial devices. Although pregnancy rate was lower using long-acting injected progesterone than with IVS, as the conception rate did not differ, it is interesting to study deeper the use of this treatment, especially if preparations of progesterone with a longer half-life are developed. However considering all the results, the traditional long IVS treatment still provided the best result.

Abstract
Management of the ovine oestrous cycle is mainly based on the use of exogenous hormones to mimic or enhance (progesterone and its analogues) or manipulate (prostaglandin F2α and its analogues) the activity of the corpus luteum, combined with the application of other hormones mimicking the pituitary secretion of gonadotrophins (e.g. equine chorionic gonadotrophin). These protocols have been applied without major change for decades but, now, there are two reasons to reconsider them: (1) our greatly improved knowledge of the dynamics of ovarian physiology, following the application of transrectal ultrasonography, indicates that modification of the protocols may improve fertility yields and (2) increasing concerns about animal health and welfare, food safety and the environmental impact of the treatments, as evidenced by public opinion and therefore market forces. Here, we offer an overview of these issues, introduce an updated protocol and suggest ways for future improvements to the protocols.

Abstract
We investigated whether human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), rather than porcine luteinising hormone (pLH), could induce ovulation in the tammar wallaby (Notamacropus eugenii) after priming with pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). pLH is effective, but is more expensive and supply is problematic. On Day 0 pouch young were removed (RPY) and 5mgkg−1 of bromocriptine mesylate was administered to all non-pregnant wallabies (n=12) to reactivate an oestrous cycle. On Day 20 RPY each female received 20IU PMSG i.m. and three days later (Day 23 RPY), the Single-Dose group (n=6) received 500IU of hCG suspended in oil at 0900 hours, and the Multi-Dose group (n=6) received 500IU of hCG at 0900, 1230 and 1630 hours. From Day 25 to Day 28 RPY copulatory plugs were observed in the Single-Dose (n=4 of 6; Day 25.3 to 28.3 RPY) and Multi-Dose (n=5 of 6; Day 25 to 28 RPY) groups. Autopsy on Day 31 RPY revealed that all females had reactivated, and despite all having large preovulatory follicles (4–6mm) in both ovaries, no ovulations or embryos were observed. We conclude that hCG is not an effective source of exogenous LH for the induction of ovulation in the tammar wallaby.

Abstract
The effect of prostaglandin and gonadotrophins (GnRH and hCG) combined with the ram effect on the progesterone (P4) concentrations and reproductive performance of Karakul ewes was investigated during non‐breeding season. Ewes (n = 93) received a male effect and were divided into two treatment groups including GnRH ‐ hCG (hCG, n = 32), GnRH ‐ GnRH (GnRH, n = 30) and a control (n = 31) group. This study was carried out from April (hormonal injection) to October (lambing). The first doses of GnRH (4.2 μg, Buserelin) were injected at the beginning of the study in treatment groups. These ewes were treated with hCG (250 IU) or the second GnRH dose five days later. All animals received two injections (ten days apart) of 150 μg PGF2α five days after the hCG or the second GnRH injection. Mating was initiated two days after the second prostaglandin injection and lasted for 34 days. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture on days −10, −5, 0 (first PGF2α injection), 17 and 30 during the study. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed through transabdominal ultrasonography on day 40 after the removing of ram. Conception rate was 93.8, 90 and 87.1% in the hCG, GnRH and control groups, respectively. Lambing rate tended to increase in the hCG group compared with the control group (87.1 versus 58.1%; p < .1). There was no significant difference in P4 concentrations among studied groups in identical sampling times (p > .05). In conclusion, the administration of prostaglandin and hCG in combination with the ram effect tended to decrease lambing period. In other words this protocol tended to increase lambing rate at the first cycle. Treatment with hCG or GnRH did not increase serum P4 concentrations of treated Karakul ewes during the non‐breeding season.

Abstract
In the present study, there was evaluation of the alternative of adding eCG as part of a long-interval prostaglandin-F2α (PG) treatment on the reproductive efficiency of Merino sheep during the breeding season. A total of 210 ewes and 182 ewe lambs were randomly assigned to three experimental groups to induce the timing of estrus among ewes in a: Long-interval PG, group being synchronized using two doses of PG 14 days apart; Long-interval PG + eCG group being synchronized using the same treatment regimen as Group PG with the addition of 200 IU eCG to the regimen, administered concomitantly with the second PG administration; and MAP + eCG group being synchronized with intravaginal progestin sponges for 14 days plus 200 IU eCG, administered at the time of sponge removal. The percentage pregnancy rate in ewes of the MAP + eCG group was greater than the ewes of the Long-interval PG and Long-interval PG + eCG groups (76.4 % compared with 52.0 % and 62.5 %, respectively; P < 0.05). The prolificacy rate was greater in the ewes of the Long-interval PG+eCG group compared with the other groups (114 % compared with 100 % and 103 %, respectively; P < 0.05). When considering the fecundity rate, ewes of the Long-interval PG+eCG and MAP+eCG groups had greater values than ewes of the Long-interval PG group (71.2 % and 78.8 % compared with 52.0 %, respectively; P < 0.05). The Long-interval PG+eCG is an alternative to the conventional progestin sponge plus eCG treatment regimen with there being a greater fecundity rate when this regimen is used compared with the Long-term PG and similar to MAP-eCG treatment regimens.

Abstract
To evaluate effects of a longer, than conventional, interval between time of prostaglandin F2α (PG)-based administrations in a PG-based treatment regimen for fixed timed AI (FTAI) on ovulation rate (OR), non-estrous return rate on Day 21 subsequent to the time of AI (NRR21), as well as conception, prolificacy and fecundity rates, ewes were assigned to two groups. Ewes of treatment group (PG15) were estrous-synchronized using two PG doses 15 days apart and FTAI was conducted at 56 h after the second PG administration (Day 0). Ewes of the Control group (SE) had imposed a pre-estrous synchrony treatment regimen with two PG doses 7 days apart and AI was conducted after detection of spontaneous estrus from 17 to 19 days after the second PG administration (Day 0). Ovulation rate on Day 8, NRR21, conception, prolificacy and fecundity rates on Day 60 were evaluated. There were no differences (P > 0.05) between ewes of the PG15 and SE groups in OR (1.47 ± 0.50 and 1.54 ± 0.50, respectively) or prolificacy (1.42 ± 0.80 and 1.33 ± 0.62, respectively), however, there were lesser values (P< 0.05) in the PG15 than SE group for NRR21 (65.2% and 91.3%, respectively), conception (59.8% and 91.3%, respectively) and fecundity (84.8% and 120%, respectively). The longer interval with the PG-based treatment regimen does not affect OR and prolificacy, but there is a lesser NRR21, conception and fecundity rate in comparison to ewes of the Control group.

Abstract
The Australian agricultural industry contributes AUD 47 billion to the Australian economy, and Australia is the world's largest exporter of sheep meat and the third largest for beef. Within Australia, sheep meat consumption continues to rise, with beef consumption being amongst the highest in the world; therefore, efficient strategies to increase herd/flock size are integral to the success of these industries. Reproductive management is crucial to increasing the efficiency of Australian breeding programs. The use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) has the potential to increase efficiency significantly. The implementation of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) and juvenile in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (JIVET) in combination with genomic selection and natural mating and AI is the most efficient way to increase genetic gain, and thus increase reproductive efficiency within the Australian livestock industries. However, ARTs are costly, and high variation, particularly between embryo transfer recipients in their ability to maintain pregnancy, is a significant constraint to the widespread commercial adoption of ARTs. The use of a phenotypic marker for the selection of recipients, as well as the better management of recipient animals, may be an efficient and cost-effective means to increase the productivity of the Australian livestock industry.

Abstract
We investigated the capacity for pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) to induce synchronous oestrus and ovulation in the tammar wallaby (Notamacropus eugenii) after follicular suppression with Lucrin® Depot, a one-month GnRH agonist. On Day 0 pouch young were removed (RPY) to reactivate a normal oestrous cycle and then two groups were treated with vehicle (Control; n = 5 and Superovulation (SOvn); n = 5) and two groups were treated with 7.5 mg of Lucrin Depot (Lucrin; n = 6; Lucrin+SOvn, n = 6). On Day 20 RPY the SOvn and Lucrin+SOvn Group received 20 IU of PMSG, which was followed on Day 23 RPY with 500 IU of hCG. The Lucrin+SOvn females underwent a more synchronous oestrus with 5 of 6 mating on Day 26 RPY while the SOvn (n = 5/5) and Control (n = 5/5) Groups copulated over two days, between Day 25-27 RPY and Day 27-29 RPY respectively. Mating plugs were not detected in any of the females in the Lucrin Group by Day 31 RPY. Autopsy on Day 31 RPY confirmed all females in each treatment group had undergone a reactivated cycle as evidenced by the presence of a large corpus luteum (CL) in one ovary. At autopsy the females in the Lucrin+SOvn Group had highly stimulated reproductive tracts, and their ovaries contained many follicles >3 mm; 14 ± 2.1 and 15.3 ± 2.1 follicles >3 mm in the CL-bearing ovary and contralateral ovary respectively. Similarly, females in the SOvn Group had 11.4 ± 2.4 and 17.4 ± 1.9 follicles >3 mm in each respective ovary. Uterine flushing and ovarian histology confirmed that females in Lucrin+SOvn and SOvn Groups had not ovulated, but normal oocytes were present in the follicles. By comparison, the Control Group had ovulated with a single embryo being recovered from the uterus of 4 of 5 females. In contrast to all groups, females in the Lucrin Group showed follicular suppression (all follicles <1.5 mm) and an unstimulated reproductive tract. We conclude that a suppression plus stimulation regimen using Lucrin Depot followed by PMSG and hCG has the capacity to synchronise oestrus, and that 20 IU of PMSG stimulates the development of antral follicles >3 mm in both ovaries. However, a single 500 IU treatment of hCG on Day 23 RPY was not able to induce ovulation in the tammar wallaby.

Abstract
Many protocols of estrous synchronization in ewes have been developed in the last few decades. The aim of this study was the effect of intravaginal progestogen, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), sponges (a progesterone analogue) with or without equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) in out of breeding season of fat-tailed Iranian Shaal breed anestrus ewes to estimate the conception rate in suburb of Tehran-Iran. In total, 50 non-cyclic ewes out of 85 ewes with < 0.05 ng/ml progesterone (P4) and aged 2 to > 7 years old were selected for out of breeding season program in May-June 2018. They were distributed into two groups (control and treatment). The treatment group (no. 25) received 12 days a sponge containing 60 mg MPA and 500 IU eCG on the day of sponge removal. The control group (no. 25) received 12 days of sponge containing MPA only. Rams were introduced to the flock after removal of sponges in treatment group and concomitant in control group. They remained within the flock for 40 days. The ram to ewe ratio was 1 to 6. Transabdominal ultrasonography was performed for pregnancy diagnosis. The obtained data was analyzed using SPSS software version 16. The conception rate in treatment and control groups were differed significantly (P < 0.01). The conception rates in MPA and MPA+ eCG were 28% and 44%, respectively. Ewes (60%) with < 2 years old had the most conception rate. However, it was shown that use of vaginal sponges containing MPA and eCG in removal time of sponge can increase significantly the conception rate in out of breeding season fat-tail ewes Shaal breed.

Abstract
Artificial insemination (AI) was the first important biotechnology applied to improve the genetics of farm animals. It allows the rapid and massive diffusion of desirable characteristics of males with high productive potential. We describe the different types of estrus induction and synchronization techniques and the use of the AI with fresh, chilled or frozen semen. Through the adequacy of the protocols of estrus synchronization and AI to the different production systems, the efficient use of reproductive techniques is possible, reaching acceptable pregnancy rates. Summary of reproductive results obtained using cervical and laparoscopic AI are presented.

Abstract
A 2-year experiment was conducted to determine the effect of a single injection of prostaglandin after initiation of the breeding season on ewe estrous synchronization. Rambouillet ewes (n = 101; Year 1 = 52; Year 2 = 49) assigned to one of three treatments: untreated (CON); 12-d CIDR insert (CIDR); or 1 injection of prostaglandin at d 2.5 (1 PG) after rams were placed with ewes. Rams were placed with ewes at the time of CIDR removal (d 0) and remained with ewes during a 35-d breeding season. Both the CIDR- (94%) and 1 PG (73.5%) treatment groups had a larger number (P ≤ 0.01) of ewes bred in the first 5 d of the breeding season compared to ewes of the control (33%) group. As expected, CIDR-treated ewes had a shorter time to mating, than 1 PG-treated ewes and ewes of the control group had a longer interval to mating than both CIDR- and 1 PG-treated ewes (P ≤ 0.01). The number of lambs born per ewe and kg of lamb weaned per ewe was not different (P ≥ 0.31) among treatment groups. Additionally, there was no difference (P = 0.78) in net profit per ewe among treatment groups. Based on these data, utilizing a single injection of PG 2.5 d after initiation of the breeding season resulted in similar pregnancy rates at d 5 of the breeding season when compared with CIDR-treated ewes indicating the potential utilization of the 1PG protocol in a confinement setting as a viable method for estrous synchronization.

Characterization of Oestrus Cycles in Namibian Swakara and Damara Sheep through Determination of Circannual Plasma Progesterone Levels. J Vet Med 2019; 2019:5320718. Abstract
A year-long prospective study characterized the seasonality of oestrus cycles in primiparous, nonpregnant Swakara (n=8) and Damara (n=5) ewes through surveillance of plasma progesterone (P4) levels. During this period, Swakara and Damara groups evidently averaged 23 oestrus cycles with an average length of 17 days. Damara ewes showed greater mean peak plasma P4 levels (11.4±0.16ng/ml) than Swakara ewes (5.4±0.11ng/ml) (P<0.05). Oestrus cycles in Damara ewes showed relatively uniform plasma P4 peaks throughout the year ranging from 10.6±0.16 to 12.6±0.24ng/ml. In Swakara ewes, P4 peaks were highest in the autumn oestrus cycles (from 7.1±0.16 to 7.5±0.11ng/ml), rapidly declining through winter to 2.2±0.08ng/ml by midspring and then rapidly increasing to 4.9±0.37ng/ml at the commencement of summer, followed by a gradual increase from 5.7± to 7.1±ng/ml by the start of autumn. The annual mean area under the curve temporal progesterone measurements (AUCPM) in Damara ewes (115.9±18.6ng⁎day/ml) was greater than that in Swakara ewes (58.6±25.3ng⁎day/ml) (p<0.05). For Swakara ewes, the mean AUCPM in summer and autumn cycles (68.2±14.7 and 79.5±10.0ng⁎day/ml, respectively) were greater than those in spring and winter cycles (28.7±12.3 and 55.0±27.3ng⁎day/ml), respectively (P<0.05). There was no seasonal variation in the exposure of the Damara ewes to P4 in between seasons (P>0.05), though, however, the Damara ewes had greater P4 levels than the Swakara ewes (P<0.05). Progesterone profiles showed that Swakara ewes possessed 'residual' seasonality, whereas the Damara ewes were no longer seasonal. The implications of this disparity in the seasonal exposure of Swakara and Damara ewes to luteal P4 on fertility warrant further investigation.

Abstract
To evaluate the reproductive effects of a short-term dietary protein supplementation (Days -10 to -3) before timed AI (TAI = Day 0), 471 Merino ewes grazing native pastures were estrous-synchronized when there were either long intervals between prostaglandin administrations (two prostaglandin injections 15 or 16 d apart; PG15 and PG16, respectively) or with a progesterone-eCG (P4-eCG) protocol, resulting in a 3 × 2 experimental design. Ovulation rate on Day 8 (OR), non-estrous-return to Day 21 (NRR21), and fertility, prolificacy and fecundity on Day 70 were evaluated. The interaction between estrous synchronization protocol and supplementation was not significant for any of these variables (P > 0.05). Supplementation increased OR, prolificacy and fecundity (+0.14, +0.15 and +0.14, respectively, P < 0.01), but did not affect NRR21 or fertility of ewes (+6.2% and +6.7% respectively, P > 0.05). Ewes treated using the PG15 and PG16 protocols had a lesser OR (-0.27), prolificacy (-0.22) and fecundity (-0.20) than ewes treated using P4-eCG protocol (P < 0.01 for each), and similar NRR21 and fertility (-5.4% and -7.9% respectively, P > 0.05 for both variables), without significant differences between the PG15 and PG16 groups. In conclusion, a short-term dietary protein supplementation before TAI improved OR, prolificacy and fecundity of ewes which were estrous-synchronized by imposing long interval PG (15 or 16 d apart) or P4-eCG-based protocols. There was a greater OR, prolificacy and fecundity when there was use of the P4-eCG compared to long interval PG-based protocols. Estrous-non-return rate after AI and fertility as a result TAI were not affected by either the supplementation or the estrous synchronization protocols used.

Abstract
Lucrin Depot (AbbVie), a 1-month microsphere gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist preparation, was investigated as a potential agent to synchronise cycling in the fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata). Forty-eight randomly selected females were treated with 5 or 10mgkg-1 Lucrin Depot (n=24 per dose). Eighteen females per treatment had their reproductive activity scored at 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks using two ovarian (Graafian follicle and corpus luteum status) and two reproductive tract (uterine and vaginal muscularity and vascularity) parameters that formed a reproductive activity score. Six females per treatment were paired with a male at 4 weeks. Fertility was assessed between 8 and 16 weeks by pouch check, and thereafter by dissection. The effects of the 5 and 10mgkg-1 doses were statistically equivalent. Females showed suppression at 4-8 weeks, an increase in reproductive activity at 8-12 weeks and all were cycling normally at 16 weeks. Six pouch young were born at 12 weeks to two females treated with the 5mgkg-1 dose. Nine embryos were recovered at 16 weeks from two females treated with the 10mgkg-1 dose. In conclusion, Lucrin Depot can suppress breeding, and fertile mating can occur in subsequent cycles in the dunnart. There is potential for Lucrin Depot to be used as an assisted breeding tool, but it may need to be combined with ovarian stimulation treatment to achieve practical levels of synchronisation in the fat-tailed dunnart.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive impact of a short-term protein supplementation on a long interval prostaglandin-based protocol (two PG injections 15 d apart; PG15) for timed artificial insemination in sheep. During the breeding season, 437 multiparous Merino ewes grazing native pastures (forage allowance of 6 kg of dry matter/100 kg of live weight; crude protein: 10.8%, metabolic energy: 2.1 Mcal/kg of dry matter) were selected. Ewes were allocated, according to body condition score (3.2 ± 0.2) and body weight (40.6 ± 4.9 kg, mean ± SD), to a 2 × 2 factorial design: type of estrus -spontaneous estrus (SE) or induced with PG15 (PG15)-, and supplementation (yes or no) before insemination (+FF; soybean meal at Days -10 to -3; crude protein: 51.9%, metabolic energy: 2.8 Mcal/kg of dry matter; average consumption 0.9% live weight/ewe/day of dry matter). All ewes were cervically artificial inseminated (Day -2 to -3 in SE ewes at estrus detection; Day 0 = timed artificial insemination in PG15 ewes). Ovulation rate on Day 7, non-return to service on Day 23, conception, fertility, prolificacy and fecundity on Day 60 were evaluated. Ovulation rate (1.17 ± 0.40 vs. 1.06 ± 0.25), non-return to service at Day 23 (81.7 vs. 64.2%), conception (78.8 vs. 61.5%), fertility (75.2 vs. 61.5%) and fecundity (0.77 vs. 0.62) were higher in ewes from SE than PG15 group (P < 0.05). However, no differences were observed in prolificacy (1.02 ± 0.16 vs. 1.01 ± 0,12) between groups (P > 0.05). Protein supplementation increased ovulation rate (1.30 ± 0.45 vs. 1.17 ± 0.40), prolificacy (1.18 ± 0.39 vs. 1.02 ± 0.16) and fecundity (0.94 vs. 0.77%; P < 0.05), but not non-return to service on Day 23 (83.8 vs. 81.7%), conception (82.9 vs. 78.8%) or fertility (79.1 vs. 75.2%; P > 0.05) in SE group. The supplement feed to PG15 ewes increased ovulation rate (1.35 ± 0.45 vs. 1.06 ± 0.25), prolificacy (1.25 ± 0.43 vs. 1.01 ± 0.12) and fecundity (0.79 vs. 0.62%; P < 0.05) to levels comparable to SE + FF ewes (P > 0.05). The magnitude of the increase in ovulation rate in PG15 was greater than in the SE group (27 vs. 11%; P < 0.05). However, non-return to service on Day 23 (65.1 vs. 64.2%), conception (63.3 vs 61.5%), and fertility rate (63.3 vs. 61.5%; P < 0.05) remained similar in PG15 supplemented or not supplemented ewes. In conclusion, a short-term protein supplementation before cervical time artificial insemination improved the reproductive performance of ewes synchronized with the PG15 protocol to levels comparable to the SE group.

Abstract
This study was conducted using 120 multiparous Awassi ewes during the breeding season to compare the effects of using previously used controlled internal drug release (CIDR) on the hormone profiles, reproductive performance and economic measures of ewes. Ewes were randomized to receive one of five previously used CIDR (previously used for 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 days) or the new CIDR as a control for 6 days (CIDR6, CIDR12, CIDR18, CIDR24, CIDR30, and CIDR0 [control], respectively). Blood samples were collected on four occasions, at the time of CIDR insertion, after 3 days of insertion, and at the time of withdrawal and insemination. Serum estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) concentrations were measured. Timed insemination was performed 48 hr post-CIDR withdrawal. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography 23 days after insemination and confirmed on day 35. The heat detection rate was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the CIDR0 and CIDR6 groups than in the CIDR18 and CIDR30 groups. The total pregnancy rate and fecundity were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the CIDR6 group than in other groups. P4 level was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the CIDR0 group than in the CIDR30 group at the time of removal. At each time point, the E2 level was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the CIDR6 group than at the other groups. The total variable cost, total cost, return and net profit were higher in the CIDR6 and CIDR0 groups than in the other groups. In conclusion, although previously used CIDRs are efficient at synchronizing oestrus in ewes, the duration of previously usage significantly affected the reproductive parameters and economic profit. CIDRs previously used for 6 days and new CIDRs provided the highest fertility and fecundity rates, besides return and net profit. Economically, it is not advisable to use CIDRs that previously used for 12 days or more.

Abstract
Seventy six ewes were treated with 7.5, 12.5, 25 or 50μg of cloprostenol on day 6 or 9 post-estrus to compare the luteolytic efficiency of the PGF2α analogue at each stage and to evaluate if progesterone concentrations at the time of treatment affect such efficiency. Blood samples were obtained before cloprostenol administration and 12, 24, 48, and 72h thereafter. There was an effect of dose (p<0.05) but not of day post-estrus on the proportion of animals completing luteolysis. As the dose increased, the proportion of ewes completing luteolysis also increased. Also, as the dose increased from 7.5 to 25μg, more ewes showed a transient progesterone decline instead of an absence of response, indicating that in some ewes reduced doses initiated luteolysis but were not able to finish the process. Since the dose of 25μg resulted in close to 50% luteolytic efficacy, this group was used to study the effects of progesterone concentrations at the time of treatment on the response to cloprostenol. Pre-treatment progesterone concentrations were higher (p<0.01) in ewes experiencing luteolytic failure than in those that completed luteolysis. There was a negative correlation between initial progesterone concentrations and their reduction by 12h post-treatment. It is concluded that high progesterone concentrations are associated with a reduction in sensitivity to small doses of cloprostenol. Possible mechanisms and implications of this luteoprotective effect are discussed.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether reproductive performance of ewes submitted to laparoscopic timed artificial insemination (TAI) would be similar to ante meridiem (AM)/post meridiem (PM) rule and assisted natural mating (NM), and whether GnRH may enhance the pregnancy rate in TAI. In experiment I, 191 non-lactating ewes were synchronized, then TAI was performed either 48 h after progesterone (P4) removal (TAI-48 h) or 12 h after estrus detection (AM/PM); moreover, some ewes were submitted to NM (NM) as control treatment. In experiment II, 247 non-lactating ewes were allocated in five treatments, a control (no-GnRH on protocol) and four treatments arranged in a factorial design 2 × 2. The factors were time and dose of GnRH: ewes that received either 10 μg (TAI-10 μg-36 h) or 25 μg of GnRH (TAI-25 μg-36 h) 36 h after P4 removal and ewes that received either 10 μg (TAI-10 μg-48 h) or 25 μg of GnRH (TAI-25 μg-48 h) at time of insemination, 48 h after P4 removal. In experiment I, pregnancy rate in TAI-48 h was lower (P = 0.03) than AM/PM and NM. Moreover, the probability of pregnancy in TAI-48 h was higher (P = 0.06) in ewes detected in estrus early. In experiment II, the use of GnRH in TAI protocols increased (P < 0.01) pregnancy rate at synchronization, and TAI-25 μ-48 h and TAI-10 μg-36 h treatments increased (P = 0.02) pregnancy rate compered to TAI-10 μg-48 h. We conclude that TAI decreased pregnancy rate compered to NM and AM/PM, which may be improved by GnRH use in TAI to synchronize ovulation.

Abstract
To compare the reproductive performance after TAI in ewes synchronized with mid (12 or 13) or long (14-16 d) interval prostaglandin (PG) or progesterone plus eCG (P4-eCG) based protocols, 440 multiparous Corriedale ewes were synchronized with two PG injections administered 12-16 d apart (PG12, PG13, PG14, PG15 and PG16 respectively), or P4-eCG (MAP sponges 14 d and eCG). Cervical TAI (Day 0) was performed with fresh semen. It was evaluated the ovulated ewes (OE, %) and the ovulation rate (OR) on Day 8 by trans-rectal ultrasonography, the rate of non-return to service between Days 13 and 21 by painted rams, and the pregnancy rate, prolificacy and fecundity on Day 60 by trans-abdominal ultrasonography. No significant differences were found in OE among groups (P>0.05), but P4-eCG achieved higher OR (P<0.05) compared to PG protocols, without differences among them (P>0.05). Similar NRR-21, pregnancy and fecundity were observed among PG15 (64.3, 62.9 and 84.3), PG16 (59.7, 59.7 and 77.8) and P4-eCG (70.3, 66.2 and 95.9), but higher compared to PG12 (42.5, 39.7 and 52.1) and PG13 group (44.0, 40.0 and 48.0, respectively; P<0.05). PG14 achieved intermediate results compared to other groups. No differences were found in prolificacy among groups (P>0.05), except PG13 that was lower compared to P4-eCG (P<0.05). In conclusion, long interval between PG injections (15 or 16 d) determined better reproductive outcome that mid interval (12 or 13 d), equating the P4-eCG based protocol after cervical TAI with fresh semen during the breeding season in sheep.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to determine the ovarian response induced with the prostaglandin-based protocol Synchrovine (two doses of PGF2α given 7 d apart), as well as the fertility after FTAI. In Experiment 1, 15 females received the Synchrovine protocol using two different PGF2α analogues (Delprostenate vs. D-Cloprostenol). No differences in estrus response, time of ovulation and follicular dynamics were found between both groups (P < 0.05). The ovulation after Synchrovine was synchronized in a similar mean interval (68.8 ± 7.1 h) than when the females received a single dose of PGF2α (70.2 ± 20.7 h; P=NS), but the dispersion between the first and the last ovulation was reduced with this protocol (range 60-84 h vs. 24-96 h, respectively; P < 0.05). In experiment 2, 318 ewes were treated with the Synchrovine protocol and cervical FTAI was performed using different sperm cell concentrations. Pregnancy rate was higher using 200 × 106 and 100 × 106 sperm cells (38.2%, 39/102; and 34.9%, 38/109, respectively) than using 50 × 106 (23.4%, 25/107, P < 0.05). In Experiment 3, 444 ewes received the Synchrovine protocol and were assigned to receive 300 IU of eCG or not at the moment of the second dose of PGF2α, and cervical FTAI was performed 42 h or 48 h after the second dose of PGF2α. No effect was found related to the eCG administration nor the time of insemination. In Experiment 4, 342 received cervical or intrauterine insemination after treatment with the Synchrovine protocol, resulting in greater pregnancy rate for intrauterine insemination than cervical insemination (52.5%, 90/171 vs. 31%, 53/171, P < 0.05). These experiments demonstrate that the Synchrovine protocol effectively induces luteolysis, estrus and ovulation in most of the treated females, and ovulation is synchronized into a narrow window of 24 h. Pregnancy rate obtained with cervical FTAI is around 30-45%, with similar results using 100 × 106 or 200 × 106 sperm cells, the eCG administration seems not to be necessary, the type of PGF2α analogue does not appear relevant, and fertility is improved with intrauterine semen deposition.

Abstract
The Chinese brown frog (Rana dybowskii) has one special physiological phenomenon, which is that its oviduct expands prior to hibernation rather than in the breeding period. In this study, we investigated the immunolocalization and expression levels of prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2), cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2, as well as one of its receptor subtypes 4 (EP4) in the oviduct of Rana dybowskii during the pre-hibernation and breeding period. PGE2, COX-1, COX-2 and EP4 have been observed in glandular and epithelial cells in the breeding period, whereas only in the epithelial cells during the pre-hibernation. Consistently, the protein levels of COX-2 and EP4 were higher in the pre-hibernation as compared to the breeding period, but the diversity of COX-1 was not obvious. In addition, oviductal PGE2 concentration was also significantly higher in the pre-hibernation. These results suggested that prostaglandin-E2 may play an important autocrine or paracrine role in oviductal cell proliferation and differentiation of Rana dybowskii during pre-hibernation.

Abstract
In a naturally mated cycle, ova and viable embryo number as well as embryo size were assessed on Day 4, 10, 14, 18, and 30 of gestation in Romney ewes (n = 38-44 per gestational group). For Days 4-18 of gestation, embryos were recovered by flushing the reproductive tract after slaughtering of the ewe. Ovulation rate was determined by counting the number of corpora lutea present on both ovaries. For the Day 30 group, number of ovulations was measured by laparoscopic examination of the ovaries at Day 9-12 of the cycle, and number of embryos present was determined by ultrasound examination at approximately Day 30 of pregnancy. Most of embryo loss occurred before Day 14 of gestation with 6% loss before Day 4, and 12% loss between Day 4 and 14 of gestation. A similar proportion of viable embryos per number of ova ovulated were recovered on Day 14 and 18 (82%) and Day 30 (81%) of gestation. Fertilization failure was estimated at 1%. Conceptus and embryo size was most variable on Day 14, representing a period of rapid growth (conceptus length ± standard deviation); Day 4 (169 ± 8 μm), Day 10 (379 ± 93 μm), Day 14 (23 ± 32 mm), Day 18 (embryo length ± standard deviation; 5.0 ± 0.7 mm). Vaccination with commercially available fertility vaccines targeting androstenedione (Androvax and Ovastim) in previous seasons resulted in reduced conceptus size compared with controls. However, no difference in the proportion of viable embryos was observed between treatments, signifying maternal tolerance for considerable variation at this stage of development. Furthermore, the finding that most of loss occurs within the first 14 days of gestation highlights the importance of both oocyte quality and the uterine environment for the embryo to successfully overcome the challenges leading up to and including pregnancy recognition in the ewe.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the possible effects of a single injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as a means for estrus induction in acyclic French-Alpine goats during the reproductive transition period at 25°N, 103°W. The potential effects of hCG upon ovarian function and reproductive performance of goats were also assessed. Multiparous acyclic French-Alpine goats (n = 39; 37.4 ± 8 .5 kg) were primed with 20mg progesterone (P4) 1 day prior to hCG administration. Thereafter, does were treated either with saline (hCG-0; n = 10), 50 (hCG-50; n = 9), 100 (hCG-100; n = 10), or 300 IU of hCG (hCG-300; n = 10). Ovarian structures and pregnancy were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography. In addition, after hCG application, goats were monitored twice daily (0800 and 1800 h) to detect estrus signs, with the use of aproned, sexually active bucks treated with testosterone. Goats were bred 12h after the onset of estrus. Two days after hCG administration, the number of large follicles was higher (P < 0.05) in the hCG-50 and hCG-300 groups (1.7 ± 0.1 and 1.8 ± 0.2, respectively) compared with the hCG-100 and hCG-0 groups (1.4 ± 0.2 and 1.1 ± 0.1, respectively). Although none of the hCG-0-goats depicted estrus, the estrus response from the hCG-50, hCG-100, and hCG-300 groups over the 7-d breeding period was 67%, 100%, and 90%, respectively (P > 0.05), being always accompanied by ovulation. Pregnancy rate (67, 100, and 70%), kidding rate (55%, 80%, and 70%), and litter size (1.6 ± 0.5, 1.5 ± 0.5, and 1.5 ± 0.5) for hCG-50, hCG-100, and hCG-300, respectively, did not differ among the hCG-treated does. Therefore, the combined use of P4-priming plus a 100-IU hCG injection is an effective protocol for inducing estrus in non-cycling Alpine goats during the anestrus-to-estrus transition period, which is of key importance for both goat producers and industrializers.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the "male effect" at the end of protocol with prostaglandins (PG) on estrus synchronization of hair sheep during breeding season (November-December) in Yucatan, Mexico. Twenty female Pelibuey sheep (weighting 38.2 ± 1.6 kg and body condition score of 2.5 ± 0.5) were randomly distributed in two groups (n = 10). Group T1 (control, PG), two doses of 50 μg of cloprostenol with 12 days between applications were applied; in the second group T2 (PG-ME), ewes received the same PG protocol plus the introduction of a male at the end of treatment. The interval of end treatment-onset of estrus was analyzed using survival test; the number of sheep with presence/absence of estrus was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Ewes in estrus for groups T1 and T2 were 5 vs. 8, respectively. No significant differences were found as regards the interval end of treatment-onset of estrus (P > 0.05), as well as in total proportion of ewes with estrus and likewise in the duration of it (P > 0.05). We conclude that the protocol based on double dose of PGF2α with interval of 12 days combined with the male effect is efficient to induce luteolysis and estrus synchronization in hair sheep.
