The inhibitory effects of Silso-San-Gami on atherosclerosis in KHC rabbits

Cnidium officinale Makino: Phytology, Phytochemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology and Prescriptions (1967-2023)

Cnidium officinale Makino (COM), a perennial herbaceous plant in the Apiaceous family, widely distribute in Eastern Asia and Asia-Temperate. It has a long history application as a traditional medicine for invigorating the blood and removing blood stasis, and also has been employed to diet, pesticide, herbal bathing materials, the cosmetic and skin care industry. However, there has been no associated review of literature in the past half a century (1967-2023). By searching the international authoritative databases and collecting 229 literatures closely related to COM, herewith a comprehensive and systematic review was conducted. The phytology includes plant distribution and botanical characteristics. The phytochemistry covers 8 major categories, 208 compounds in total, and the quantitative determination of 14 monomer compounds, total polyphenols and total flavonoids. The clinical trial in pregnant women and toxic experiments in mice, the pharmacology of 7 aspects and 82 frequently used prescriptions are summarized. It is expected that this paper will provide forward-looking scientific thinking and literature support for the further modern research, development and utilization of COM.

Efficacy and Safety of Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu Decoction for Patients with Coronary Heart Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective

To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of XFZYD for coronary heart disease (CHD).

Methods

A comprehensive literature search of randomized controlled trials using XFZYD for CHD was conducted in 10 electronic databases from their establishment to December 20, 2020. The researchers screened the relevant trials in NoteExpress, extracted the data in duplicate independently, assessed the risk of bias in the trials using the Cochrane collaboration tool, and then used Rev Man 5.3 for data analysis.

Results

30 trials with 3126 participants were included for meta-analysis. The results showed that the clinical effects of XFZYD and its combination with chemical drugs (CD) were 1.13 (RR; 1.13; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.24) and 1.26 (RR; 1.26; 95% CI, 1.20 to 1.32) times those of CD, respectively. And, it could also improve electrocardiogram effect, which was 1.63 (RR; 1.63; 95% CI, 1.04 to 2.53) times that of CD. XFZYD could not only decrease duration of angina pectoris and improve vascular endothelial function but also obviously reduce the TCM syndrome score. When used in combination with CD, it could also lower AF, correct the dyslipidemia, and reduce the blood viscosity.

Conclusion

These results demonstrated that XFZYD had great advantages in treating CHD with no obvious adverse reactions. Therefore, it is believed that XFZYD is more suitable for CHD patients with clinical indicators of dyslipidemia, high blood viscosity, or vascular endothelial dysfunction. This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis with some unique ways, including its comprehensiveness, large-scale search, the novelty of findings, and transparent approach.

Inhibition of aortic intimal hyperplasia and cell cycle protein and extracellular matrix protein expressions by BuYang HuanWu Decoction

AIM OF THE STUDY

The inhibitive effect of BuYang HuanWu Decoction (BYHWD) and its major components on vascular intimal hyperplasia and the expressions of cell cycle protein and extracellular matrix protein.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham-operated, control, alkaloid, glycoside, BYHWD and atorvastatin groups. Rat aorta intima in all groups were injured by insesion of domestic balloon catheter into the aortae except sham-operated rats. Drugs were administrated orally from the second day after vascular injury and continued for 14 days. The injured segments of aortae were collected on the sixteenth day after operation to observe the morphological changes of vascular structure and to examine the expressions of proteins in vascular cells associated with cell cycle including proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), cyclinD(1) and cyclinE, and extracellular matrix(ECM) proteins including collagen I (Col-I) and fibronectin (FN), further to discover the involved biologically active substances and the potential mechanisms.

RESULTS

Alkaloid and glycosid isolated from BYHWD were more effective than BYHWD in the inhibition of intimal hyperplasia and the expressions of PCNA, cyclinD(1), cyclinE, Col-I and FN, suggesting that alkaloid and glycoside may be the main components of BYHWD responsible for the observed inhibition of excessive hyperplasia of vascular intima.

CONCLUSIONS

The mechanism associated with the anti-hyperplasia activity of BYHWD and its effective components may be related to the blockage of cell cycles of VSMC, and the inhibition of the ECM protein synthesis, even the increased degradation of ECM proteins.

Effects on lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzymes of Euonymus alatus in cultured rat hepatocytes

The Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb. has long been used as a crude drug. In this paper, we investigate the effects of E. alatus on cultured hepatocyte cell system and lipid peroxidation in hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) treatment conditions. The study covers the physiological activity (the antioxidative activity and the nitrite-scavenging effect) of E. alatus. H(2)O(2) that can produce intracellular free radical was used for inducer of the peroxidation of cellular lipids. Treatment of E. alatus attenuated in cell killing enhanced by increasing concentrations of H(2)O(2). The increased malondialdehyde level induced by H(2)O(2) treatment was reduced by pre-treatment of E. alatus. Furthermore, addition of E. alatus in cell culture medium significantly reduced cell killing and content of intracellular antioxidants. Changes in nitrite-scavenging effect of E. alatus at various concentrations (5-25 mg/ml) and various pH levels (pH 1.2, 4.2 and 6.0) were also observed. The present study was also done to investigate the effects of E. alatus on cultured hepatocyte cell system, H(2)O(2)-induced cytotoxicity and antioxidative enzyme activities, including catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase in H(2)O(2 )treatment conditions. E. alatus treatment had significant protective or elevating activities on these antioxidative enzyme activities compared to a normal group. The results indicate that E. alatus provides a strong antioxidant protection of cells against H(2)O(2)-induced oxidative stress.
