Different surface treatments and adhesive monomers for zirconia-resin bonds: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

This review examined the efficacy of surface treatments and adhesive monomers for enhancing zirconia-resin bond strength. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library yielded relevant in vitro studies. Employing pairwise and Bayesian network meta-analyses, 77 articles meeting inclusion criteria were analyzed. Gas plasma was found to be ineffective, while treatments including air abrasion, silica coating, laser, selective infiltration etching, hot etching showed varied effectiveness. Air abrasion with finer particles (25-53 µm) showed higher immediate bond strength than larger particles (110-150 µm), with no significant difference post-aging. The Rocatec silica coating system outperformed the CoJet system in both immediate and long-term bond strength. Adhesives containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) were superior to other acidic monomers. The application of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and silane did not improve bonding performance. Notably, 91.2 % of bonds weakened after aging, but this effect was less pronounced with air abrasion or silica coating. The findings highlight the effectiveness of air abrasion, silica coating, selective infiltration etching, hot etching, and laser treatment in improving bond strength, with 10-MDP in bonding agents enhancing zirconia bonding efficacy.

Identification and functional prediction of miRNAs that regulate ROS levels in dielectric barrier discharge plasma-treated boar spermatozoa

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma regulates the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are critical for sperm quality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding single-stranded RNA molecules encoded by endogenous genes, which regulate post-transcriptional gene expression in animals. At present, it is unknown whether DBD plasma can regulate sperm ROS levels through miRNAs. To further understand the regulatory mechanism of DBD plasma on sperm ROS levels, miRNAs in fresh boar spermatozoa were detected using Illumina deep sequencing technology. We found that 25 known miRNAs and 50 novel miRNAs were significantly upregulated, and 14 known miRNAs and 74 novel miRNAs were significantly downregulated in DBD plasma-treated spermatozoa. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that target genes of differentially expressed miRNAs were involved in many activities and pathways associated with antioxidants. We verified that DBD plasma significantly increased boar sperm quality and reduced ROS levels. These results suggest that DBD plasma can improve sperm quality by regulating ROS levels via miRNAs. Our findings provide a potential strategy to improve sperm quality through miRNA-targeted regulation of ROS, which helps to increase male reproduction and protect cryopreserved semen in clinical practice.

Applications of Plasma Technologies in Recycling Processes

Plasmas are reactive ionised gases, which enable the creation of unique reaction fields. This allows plasmas to be widely used for a variety of chemical processes for materials, recycling among others. Because of the increase in urgency to find more sustainable methods of waste management, plasmas have been enthusiastically applied to recycling processes. This review presents recent developments of plasma technologies for recycling linked to economical models of circular economy and waste management hierarchies, exemplifying the thermal decomposition of organic components or substances, the recovery of inorganic materials like metals, the treatment of paper, wind turbine waste, and electronic waste. It is discovered that thermal plasmas are most applicable to thermal processes, whereas nonthermal plasmas are often applied in different contexts which utilise their chemical selectivity. Most applications of plasmas in recycling are successful, but there is room for advancements in applications. Additionally, further perspectives are discussed.

Investigating the impact of inbuilt cold atmospheric pressure plasma on molecular assemblies of tryptophan enantiomers: in vitro fabrication of self-assembled supramolecular structures

The advancements in understanding the phenomenon of plasma interactions with matter, coupled with the development of CAPP devices, have resulted in an interdisciplinary research topic of significant importance. This has led to the integration of various fields of science, including plasma physics, chemistry, biomedical sciences, and engineering. The reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species generated from cold atmospheric plasma on interaction with biomolecules like proteins and peptides form various supramolecular structures. CAPP treatment of amino acids, which are the fundamental building blocks of proteins, holds potential in creating self-assembled supramolecular architectures. In this work, we demonstrate the process of self-assembly of aromatic amino acid tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers (l-tryptophan and d-tryptophan) into ordered supramolecular assemblies induced by the reactive species generated by a cold atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet. These enantiomers of tryptophan form organized structures as evidenced by FE-SEM. To assess the impact of CAPP treatment on the observed assemblies, we employed various analytical techniques such as zeta potential, dynamic light scattering and FTIR spectroscopy. Also, photoluminescence and time-resolved lifetime measurements revealed the transfiguration of individual Trp enantiomers. The LC-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis demonstrated that CAPP irradiation led to the incorporation of oxygenated ions into the pure Trp molecule. These studies of the self-assembly of Trp due to ROS and RNS interactions will help us to understand the assembly environment. This knowledge may be utilized to artificially design and synthesize highly ordered functional supramolecular structures using CAPP.

Anti-Cancer Activity of the Combinational Treatment of Noozone Cold Plasma with p-FAK Antibody-Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles in OSCC Xenograft Mice

Oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer (about 80–90% of cases) and various research is being done to cure the disease. This paper aims to verify whether treatment with no-ozone cold plasma (NCP), which is designed for safe usage of the plasma on oral cavities, in combination with gold nanoparticles conjugated with p-FAK antibody (p-FAK/GNP) can trigger the selective and instant killing of SCC-25 cells both in vitro and in vivo. When SCC25 and HaCaT cells are exposed to p-FAK/GNP+NCP, the instant cell death was observed only in SCC25 cells. Such p-FAK/GNP+NCP-mediated cell death was observed only when NCP was directly treated on SCC25 harboring p-FAK/GNP. During NCP treatment, the removal of charged particles from NCP using grounded electric mesh radically decreased the p-FAK/GNP+NCP-mediated cell death. This p-FAK/GNP+NCP-mediated selective cell death of OSCC was also observed in mice xenograft models using SCC25 cells. The mere treatment of p-FAK/GNP and NCP on the xenograft tumor slowly decreased the size of the tumor, and only about 50% of the tumor remained at the end of the experiment. On the other hand, 1 week of p-FAK/GNP+NCP treatment was enough to reduce half of the tumor size, and most of tumor tissue had vanished at the end. An analysis of isolated tissues showed that in the case of individual treatment with p-FAK/GNP or NCP, the cancer cell population was reduced due to apoptotic cell death. However, in the case of p-FAK/GNP+NCP, apoptotic cell death was unobserved, and most tissues were composed of collagen. Thus, this paper suggests the possibility of p-FAK/GNP+NCP as a new method for treating OSCC.

Effect of the Plasma Gas Type on the Surface Characteristics of 3Y-TZP Ceramic

Plasma surface treatment can be an attractive strategy for modifying the chemically inert nature of zirconia to improve its clinical performance. This study aimed to clarify the effect of plasma gas compositions on the physicochemical surface modifications of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP). The cold, atmospheric plasma discharges were carried out by using four different plasma gases, which are He/O₂, N₂/Ar, N₂, and Ar from an application distance of 10 mm for 60 s. Static contact angles were measured to define the surface free energy. Changes in elemental composition, surface crystallinity, and surface topography were assessed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. A significant decrease in water contact angle was observed in all plasma groups with the lowest value of 69° in the N₂/Ar group. CLSM and SEM investigations exhibited no morphological changes in all plasma groups. XPS revealed that a reduction in the surface C content along with an increase in O content was pronounced in the case of N₂/Ar compared to others, which was responsible for high hydrophilicity of the surface. XRD showed that the changes in crystallite size and microstrain due to oxygen atom displacements were observed in the N₂/Ar group. The N₂/Ar plasma treatment may contribute to enhancing the bioactivity as well as the bonding performance of 3Y-TZP by controlling the plasma-generated nitrogen functionalities.

Role of charge accumulation in guided streamer evolution in helium DBD plasma jets

Experimental data are presented on the evolution of a helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet driven by a tailored voltage waveform generated as bunches of voltage pulses consisting of a superposition of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\approx 43$$\end{document}≈43 kHz bipolar square pulses and \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\approx 300$$\end{document}≈300 kHz oscillations. The characteristics of directed ionization waves (guided streamers) are compared for bunches with different first pulse polarities and different bunch duty cycles. The longest and brightest streamers are achieved at the voltage bunch with the first negative pulse and a minimum duty cycle. The dynamics of streamers at the voltage bunch with the first positive pulse are characterized by the shortest length and a lower brightness. The plasma jet length can be smoothly changed by varying the number of pulses in the bunch and the polarity of the first pulse. It is thus possible to precisely localize the region of a strong field in space by combining the parameters of the applied voltage (the duty cycle and polarity of the first pulse of a bunch) with a stepwise propagation mode of a guided streamer.

An Ultra-Simple Charge Supplementary Strategy for High Performance Rotary Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Free-standing rotary triboelectric nanogenerators (rTENG) can accomplish special tasks which require both high voltage and high frequency. However, the reported high performance rTENG all have complex structures for output enhancement. In this work, an ultra-simple strategy to build high performance rTENG is developed. With only one small paper strip added to the conventional structure, the output of the TENG is promoted hugely. The voltage is triplicated to 2.3 kV, and the current and charge are quintupled to 133 µA and 197 nC, respectively. The small paper strip, with the merits of ultra-simplicity, wide availability, easy accessibility and low cost, functions as a super-effective charge supplement. This simple and delicate structure enables ultra-high durability with the 2.3 kV voltage output 100% maintained after 1 000 000 cycles. This charge supplementary strategy is universally effective for many other materials, and decouples the output enhancement from any friction or contact on the metal electrodes, emphasizing a critical working principle for the rTENG. Atmospheric cold plasma is generated using the paper strip rTENG (ps-rTENG), which demonstrates strong ability to do bacteria sterilization. This simple and persistent charge supplementary strategy can be easily adopted by other designs to promote the output even further.

Applications of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Technology in Medicine, Agriculture and Food Industry

In recent years, cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) technology has received substantial attention due to its valuable properties including operational simplicity, low running cost, and environmental friendliness. Several different gases (air, nitrogen, helium, argon) and techniques (corona discharge, dielectric barrier discharge, plasma jet) can be used to generate plasma at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. Plasma treatment is routinely used in materials science to modify the surface properties (e.g., wettability, chemical composition, adhesion) of a wide range of materials (e.g., polymers, textiles, metals, glasses). Moreover, CAPP seems to be a powerful tool for the inactivation of various pathogens (e.g., bacteria, fungi, viruses) in the food industry (e.g., food and packing material decontamination, shelf life extension), agriculture (e.g., disinfection of seeds, fertilizer, water, soil) and medicine (e.g., sterilization of medical equipment, implants). Plasma medicine also holds great promise for direct therapeutic treatments in dentistry (tooth bleaching), dermatology (atopic eczema, wound healing) and oncology (melanoma, glioblastoma). Overall, CAPP technology is an innovative, powerful and effective tool offering a broad application potential. However, its limitations and negative impacts need to be determined in order to receive regulatory approval and consumer acceptance.

Tiny Cold Atmospheric Plasma Jet for Biomedical Applications

Conventional plasma jets for biomedical applications tend to have several drawbacks, such as high voltages, high gas delivery, large plasma probe volume, and the formation of discharge within the organ. Therefore, it is challenging to employ these jets inside a living organism’s body. Thus, we developed a single-electrode tiny plasma jet and evaluated its use for clinical biomedical applications. We investigated the effect of voltage input and flow rate on the jet length and studied the physical parameters of the plasma jet, including discharge voltage, average gas and subject temperature, and optical emissions via spectroscopy (OES). The interactions between the tiny plasma jet and five subjects (de-ionized (DI) water, metal, cardboard, pork belly, and pork muscle) were studied at distances of 10 mm and 15 mm from the jet nozzle. The results showed that the tiny plasma jet caused no damage or burning of tissues, and the ROS/RNS (reactive oxygen/nitrogen species) intensity increased when the distance was lowered from 15 mm to 10 mm. These initial observations establish the tiny plasma jet device as a potentially useful tool in clinical biomedical applications.

Cold Atmospheric Plasma: A Promising Controller of Cancer Cell States

Simple Summary

Cancer treatment is complicated by the distinct phenotypic attractor states in which cancer cells exist within individual tumors, and inherent plasticity of cells in transiting between these states facilitates the acquisition of drug-resistant and more stem cell-like phenotypes in cancer cells. Controlling these crucial transition switches is therefore critical for the long-term success of any cancer therapy. This paper highlights the most promising avenues for controlling cancer state transition events by cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) to enable the development of efficient tools for cancer prevention and management. The key switches in carcinogenesis can be used to halt or reverse cancer progression, and understanding how CAP can modulate these processes is critical for the development of CAP-based strategies for cancer prevention, detection and effective treatment.

Abstract

Rich in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, cold atmospheric plasma has been shown to effectively control events critical to cancer progression; selectively inducing apoptosis, reducing tumor volume and vasculature, and halting metastasis by taking advantage of, e.g., synergies between hydrogen peroxide and nitrites. This paper discusses the efficacy, safety and administration of cold atmospheric plasma treatment as a potential tool against cancers, with a focus on the mechanisms by which cold atmospheric plasma may affect critical transitional switches that govern tumorigenesis: the life/death control, tumor angiogenesis and epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and drug sensitivity spectrum. We introduce the possibility of modeling cell transitions between the normal and cancerous states using cold atmospheric plasma as a novel research avenue to enhance our understanding of plasma-aided control of oncogenesis.

Cold atmospheric plasma for SARS-CoV-2 inactivation

Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infectious virions are viable on various surfaces (e.g., plastic, metals, and cardboard) for several hours. This presents a transmission cycle for human infection that can be broken by developing new inactivation approaches. We employed an efficient cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) with argon feed gas to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 on various surfaces including plastic, metal, cardboard, basketball composite leather, football leather, and baseball leather. These results demonstrate the great potential of CAP as a safe and effective means to prevent virus transmission and infections for a wide range of surfaces that experience frequent human contact. Since this is the first-ever demonstration of cold plasma inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, it is a significant milestone in the prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and presents a new opportunity for the scientific, engineering, and medical communities.

Effects of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet on human apical papilla cell proliferation, mineralization, and attachment

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the direct effects of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet on cell proliferation and mineralization on human apical papilla cells and its indirect effect on cell attachment on plasma-treated dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Plasma was directly applied to cell culture for various durations. Cell proliferation was evaluated using AlamarBlue® assay. Mineralization was assessed using Alizarin Red S staining after 14 and 21 days. The cell attachment to plasma-treated dentin surface was evaluated using an ex vivo immature tooth model, and the protocols varied based on root canal irrigants (NSS or 17% EDTA), the durations of plasma application (0, 30, or 60 s), and the different positions of the plasma needle (coronal or middle). The attached cells were visualized using the immunofluorescence staining and the positive-staining cells were counted.

RESULTS

There was no difference in the cell proliferation between the untreated and plasma-treated cells. However, the plasma-treated cells tended to have lower levels of calcium deposition, especially after the 60-s plasma application (p < 0.05). Finally, significantly greater numbers of attached cells were shown when NSS was combined with plasma treatment when compared to the untreated cells (p < 0.05), whereas no difference was observed when EDTA was used as the irrigant.

CONCLUSIONS

Plasma might disturb the mineralization of the cells. Interestingly, the dentin conditioning process using a plasma jet with NSS irrigation may enhance cell attachment.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet may be an alternative treatment in regenerative endodontic procedures in order to improve cell attachment in the root canal system.

Critical Analysis of Non-Thermal Plasma-Driven Modulation of Immune Cells from Clinical Perspective

The emerged field of non-thermal plasma (NTP) shows great potential in the alteration of cell redox status, which can be utilized as a promising therapeutic implication. In recent years, the NTP field considerably progresses in the modulation of immune cell function leading to promising in vivo results. In fact, understanding the underlying cellular mechanisms triggered by NTP remains incomplete. In order to boost the field closer to real-life clinical applications, there is a need for a critical overview of the current state-of-the-art. In this review, we conduct a critical analysis of the NTP-triggered modulation of immune cells. Importantly, we analyze pitfalls in the field and identify persisting challenges. We show that the identification of misconceptions opens a door to the development of a research strategy to overcome these limitations. Finally, we propose the idea that solving problems highlighted in this review will accelerate the clinical translation of NTP-based treatments.

Direct Visualization of Perm-Selective Ion Transportation

Perm-selective ion transportation in a nanoscale structure such as nanochannel, nanoporous membrane or nanojunction has been extensively studied with aids of nanofabrication technology for a decade. While theoretical and experimental advances pushed the phenomenon to seminal innovative applications, its basic observation has relied only on an indirect analysis such as current-voltage relation or fluorescent imaging adjacent to the nanostructures. Here we experimentally, for the first time, demonstrated a direct visualization of perm-selective ion transportation through the nanoscale space using an ionic plasma generation. A micro/nanofluidic device was employed for a micro bubble formation, plasma negation and penetration of the plasma along the nanojunction. The direct observation provided a keen evidence of perm-selectivity, i.e. allowing cationic species and rejecting anionic species. Furthermore, we can capture the plasma of lithium, which has lower mobility than sodium in aqueous state, passed the nanojunction faster than sodium due to the absence of hydrated shells around lithium. This simple, but essential visualization technique would be effective means not only for advancing the fundamental nanoscale electrokinetic study as well as interfacial ion transportation between liquid and plasma but also for providing the insight of new innovative engineering applications.

Raman micro-spectroscopy monitoring of cytochrome c redox state in Candida utilis during cell death under low-temperature plasma-induced oxidative stress

Oxidative stress may result in different modes of cell death, such as necrosis, apoptosis and necroptosis. Currently, researchers are still striving to develop efficient tools/methods to distinguish the cell death modes in direct and label-free ways. In this study, we attempted to employ Raman micro-spectroscopy to observe the molecular changes in Candida utilis cells under oxidative stress induced by low-temperature plasma (LTP) and explore the spectroscopic biomarkers for the modes of cell death under oxidative stress. In this research, we confirmed that LTP could impose oxidative stress on the yeast cells, and recorded the changes of Raman signals of cytochrome c in the cells under LTP oxidative stress. Subsequently, we identified the biochemical and morphological characteristic features corresponding to different modes of cell death. Interestingly, we found that LTP under certain conditions could induce oxidative stress which caused the yeast cell death mainly by means of necroptosis, which was verified by Annexin V/PI, HMGB1 location assay and immunoprecipitation assay of the RIP1/RIP3 necrosome. Correspondingly, we also showed that the LTP induced necroptosis, associated with the increase of cytoplasmic Ca²⁺ and mitochondrial ROS, the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential, the release of oxidized cytochrome c from the mitochondrion to the cytoplasm, and the destruction of mitochondria in yeast cells. This work has therefore demonstrated that monitoring the redox state of cytochrome c using Raman micro-spectroscopy is very useful for distinguishing the modes of cell death and particularly may unveil the unique necroptosis process of cells under extrinsic oxidative stress.

Plasma-generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species can lead to closure, locking and constriction of the Dionaea muscipula Ellis trap

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) can influence plant signalling, physiology and development. We have previously observed that an argon plasma jet in atmospheric air can activate plant movements and morphing structures in the Venus flytrap and Mimosa pudica similar to stimulation of their mechanosensors in vivo. In this paper, we found that the Venus flytrap can be activated by plasma jets without direct contact of plasma with the lobe, midrib or cilia. The observed effects are attributed to RONS, which are generated by argon and helium plasma jets in atmospheric air. We also found that application of H₂O₂ or HNO₃ aqueous solutions to the midrib induces propagation of action potentials and trap closing similar to plasma effects. Control experiments showed that UV light or neutral gas flow did not induce morphing or closing of the trap. The trap closing by plasma is thus likely to be associated with the production of hydrogen peroxide by the cold plasma jet in air. Understanding plasma control of plant morphing could help design adaptive structures and bioinspired intelligent materials.

A Critical Review on Selected External Physical Cues and Modulation of Cell Behavior: Magnetic Nanoparticles, Non-thermal Plasma and Lasers

Physics-based biomedical approaches have proved their importance for the advancement of medical sciences and especially in medical diagnostics and treatments. Thus, the expectations regarding development of novel promising physics-based technologies and tools are very high. This review describes the latest research advances in biomedical applications of external physical cues. We overview three distinct topics: using high-gradient magnetic fields in nanoparticle-mediated cell responses; non-thermal plasma as a novel bactericidal agent; highlights in understanding of cellular mechanisms of laser irradiation. Furthermore, we summarize the progress, challenges and opportunities in those directions. We also discuss some of the fundamental physical principles involved in the application of each cue. Considerable technological success has been achieved in those fields. However, for the successful clinical translation we have to understand the limitations of technologies. Importantly, we identify the misconceptions pervasive in the discussed fields.

Analysis of Short-Lived Reactive Species in Plasma-Air-Water Systems: The Dos and the Do Nots

This Feature addresses the analysis of the reactive species generated by nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas, which are widely employed in industrial and biomedical research, as well as first clinical applications. We summarize the progress in detection of plasma-generated short-lived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in aqueous solutions, discuss the potential and limitations of various analytical methods in plasma-liquid systems, and provide an outlook on the possible future research goals in development of short-lived reactive species analysis methods for a general nonspecialist audience.

MicroRNA-7450 regulates non-thermal plasma-induced chicken Sertoli cell apoptosis via adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase activation

Non-thermal plasma treatment is an emerging innovative technique with a wide range of biological applications. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge plasma technique on immature chicken Sertoli cell (SC) viability and the regulatory role of microRNA (miR)-7450. Results showed that plasma treatment increased SC apoptosis in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Plasma-induced SC apoptosis possibly resulted from the excess production of reactive oxygen species via the suppression of antioxidant defense systems and decreased cellular energy metabolism through the inhibition of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release and respiratory enzyme activity in the mitochondria. In addition, plasma treatment downregulated miR-7450 expression and activated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα), which further inhibited mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) phosphorylation in SCs. A single-stranded synthetic miR-7450 antagomir disrupted mitochondrial membrane potential and decreased ATP level and mTOR phosphorylation by targeting the activation of AMPKα, which resulted in significant increases in SC lethality. A double-stranded synthetic miR-7450 agomir produced opposite effects on these parameters and ameliorated plasma-mediated apoptotic effects on SCs. Our findings suggest that miR-7450 is involved in the regulation of plasma-induced SC apoptosis through the activation of AMPKα and the further inhibition of mTOR signaling pathway.
