Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the morphology and morphometry of the layers that make up the follicular complex surrounding mature oocytes in the six fish species Auchenipterichthys longimanus, Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Hypophthalmus marginatus, Baryancistrus xanthellus, Panaqolus tankei and Peckoltia oligospila, belonging to the order Siluriformes, which inhabit the Amazon basin. On the basis of the morphology and thickness of the layers of the follicular complex, the species were divided into two groups: 1- A. longimanus, A. Ucayalensis and H. marginatus and 2 - B. xanthellus, P. tankei and P. oligospila. The total thickness of the layers that make up the follicular complex showed a difference between type III and IV oocytes for all species of each group. Differences in the theca layer, follicular cells and zona radiata between species and between groups were submitted to statistical analysis. Morphologically, group 1 showed columnar follicular cells and thin zona radiata. Meanwhile, group 2 displayed a layer of cuboidal-shaped follicular cells layer and thicker zona radiata. These differences may be related to the environment and reproductive behaviors, as group 1 migrates without parental care and has eggs that are generally smaller and abundant. While group 2, represented by loricariidae, inhabit lotic environments, have reproductive tactics of parental care and eggs that are generally large and in small numbers. Therefore, we can infer that the follicular complex in mature oocytes can predict the reproductive tactics of the species.

Abstract
Congeneric species often coexist in sympatry using behavioral and morphological adaptations to reduce competition and interspecific interference, but reproductive patterns behind coexistence remain unknown. We analyzed the gonadal morphology and development, reproductive cycle, and population structure of two sympatric congeneric fishes to evaluate the degree of overlap and differentiation of the reproductive biology between species in a Neotropical river. Development of testes and ovaries were similar between species, both showing asynchronous gonadal development, large diameter of gametes and synthesis of mucosubstances by follicle cells to form adhesive eggs. Although the morphometry of germ cells did not present differences, the zona radiata of mature eggs in Hypostomus garmani was markedly thicker than H. francisci, which suggests different spawning habitats. Both species have greater reproductive activity in the rainy season, concomitant with increase in water temperature, however H. garmani initiates and ends its reproduction earlier than H. francisci, indicating a differentiation of reproductive periods. Sexually mature males and females of H. francisci reproduced at a larger mean size then H. garmani. The two congeneric species had a similar abundance and sex ratios in the study area. Results show that although the species exhibited broad overlap of reproductive traits, a spatial and temporal differentiation of the reproductive biology was present. This study contributes to understanding reproductive mechanisms that may facilitate coexistence between congeneric sympatric species.

Abstract
Inducing maturation of the ovaries to enable the production of good-quality eggs is critical for the successful artificial breeding of Anguilla japonica. During the spawning season, however, the ovaries of A. japonica have been found to develop into asynchronous clutches, impeding the success of artificial breeding on a commercial scale. The dynamic molecular regulation of follicular development in the same individual was assessed by transcriptome analysis of the five stages of follicles, the pre-vitellogenic, early vitellogenic, midvitellogenic, late vitellogenic, and migratory nucleus stages in artificial maturing A. japonica. Comparisons across these developmental stages identified a total of 19,298 differentially expressed transcripts (DETs). Short time-series expression miner analysis across these DETs revealed four significant expression profiles. Gene Ontology function and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses found that some of the significantly enriched biological processes and metabolic pathways included those related to steroid hormone biosynthesis (cyp11a1, cyp17a1, cyp17a2, hsd17b1, and hsd17b12), cargo receptor activity (vtgr and vldlr), meiosis and ovulation (pgrs and mPRγ), hydration (cts and aqp1), and egg coat formation (zp). These genes and pathways were associated with serum 17β-estradiol concentrations and morphological changes. The levels of hsd17b12 and mPRγ mRNAs were much higher during the migratory nucleus stage, suggesting their respective involvement in the biosynthesis and functional pathway of the maturation-inducing steroid 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one. The gene subtypes aqp1b and ctsd may regulate water influx into oocytes and yolk protein proteolysis, respectively. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to describe combined transcriptome profiling of asynchronously developing follicles in the same individual. The findings suggest that steroid hormone synthesis and nutrient absorption in follicular somatic cells play important roles during follicular development and maturation, despite the same external physiological surroundings.

Abstract
This study describes the embryonic development of Moenkhausia oligolepis in laboratory conditions. After fertilization, the embryos were collected every 10 min up to 2 h, then every 20 min up to 4 h, and afterwards every 30 min until hatching. The fertilized eggs of M. oligolepis measured approximately 0.85 ± 0.5 mm and had an adhesive surface. Embryonic development lasted 14 h at 25ºC through the zygote, cleavage, blastula, gastrula, neurula, and segmentation phases. Hatching occurred in embryos around the 30-somites stage. The present results contribute only the second description of embryonic development to a species from the Moenkhausia genus, being also the first for this species. Such data are of paramount importance considering the current conflicting state of this genus phylogenetic classification and may help taxonomic studies. Understanding the biology of a species that is easily managed in laboratory conditions and has an ornamental appeal may assist studies in its reproduction to both supply the aquarium market and help the species conservation in nature. Moreover, these data enable the use of M. oligolepis as a model species in biotechnological applications, such as the germ cell transplantation approach.

Abstract
The reproduction of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) from the Turvo River, Brazil, was studied using anatomical, biometric, histological, and ultrastructural techniques. Between April 2014 and March 2015, a total of 278 males and 512 females were captured bimonthly. The testes of Iheringichthys labrosus are fringed and possess a cranial spermatogenic region and an exclusively secretory caudal region. Histologically, the cranial region is composed of seminiferous tubules with spermatogenesis being completed in cysts. The spermatozoa are of the primitive type with a spherical head and have a rudimentary intermediate piece and a long tail with an axonemic arrangement of 9 + 2. The caudal region does not form an individualized gland, and cells in this testis area have characteristics of protein secretion. A variable density electron-dense secretion accumulates in the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in the lumen of the seminiferous tubules and in the testicular ducts during maturation. The cortical alveoli are discontinuous, and the zona pellucida consists of three layers crossed by pore canals, and the follicular cells are squamous in the early stages of oogenesis and cuboidal in advanced stages. The gonadosomatic index was associated with the maturation of the gonads while the condition factor indicated that the fish feed less and utilize adipose reserves during the reproductive period. Males and females reproductively functional throughout the year with spawning being partial or multiple, similar to that reported in studies of the species in lentic environments.

Abstract
This contribution describes the growth of oocytes, addressing the formation of structures that compose the follicular complex, as well as the remodeling of the extracellular matrix, specifically laminin, fibronectin and type IV collagen during gonadal maturation. Thirty-seven females of the Acari zebra fish, Hypancistrus zebra were captured and the ovaries were submitted to histological processing for light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry techniques. Oogonia and four stages (I – IV) of oocytes were distinguished, and structures such as the postovulatory follicle and atretic oocytes (initial and advanced atresia) were observed. The follicular complex consists of the mature oocyte, zona radiata (Zr1, Zr2 and Zr3), follicular cells, basement membrane and theca. During oocyte growth, proteins of the extracellular matrix showed different intensities of staining. Based on these observations, a model of oocyte growth is proposed to define specific characteristics of the oocyte and the remodeling of the extracellular matrix in the ovary of H. zebra. This model of oocyte growth can be extended to other species of ornamental fishes. This study contributes data for induced fertilization and eventual conservation of this species.

Abstract
The success of fishes in different environments is related with the variation of reproductive strategies developed by the systematic group, which is reflected in the morphology of the reproductive system and can have ecological and evolutionary implications. This study comparatively analyzed the morphological characteristics of the male and female reproductive systems of ostariophysan fish species from the upper Das Velhas River in the São Francisco River basin, Brazil. In order to accomplish this, 393 specimens belonging to seven fish species were sampled between April 2010 and June 2015 for histological, ultrastructural, histochemical, and morphometric analyses. All the species examined have anastomosing tubular testes with unrestricted distribution of spermatogonia. Astyanax bimaculatus, A. fasciatus, A. scabripinnis, and Harttia torrenticola had their spermatozoa embedded in a glycoprotein secretion within the tubule lumen. Most species had type I spermiogenesis, whereas Rhamdia quelen had type III spermiogenesis. While all females examined had asynchronous oocyte development, there were remarkable morphological, histochemical, and morphometric differences in the ovarian follicles and enveloping layers. Hoplias malabaricus and H. torrenticola, which exhibit parental care behaviour, had a significantly larger diameter of vitellogenic oocytes and larger spermatozoa nuclei. Apareiodon ibitiensis, H. torrenticola, and A. scabripinnis, species that have rheophilic preferences, exhibited a thicker zona radiata than the other species examined. The follicular cells of R. quelen and H. torrenticola were columnar and produced a jelly coat and mucosubstances, respectively. The females of the seven fish species studied show a correlation of the reproductive strategies with the reproductive system morphology, while males retained more similar morphological characteristics between species. Abstract
Herein we determine for the first time the reproduction parameters and population structure of Hypostomus francisci in the Itapecerica River, São Francisco Basin. A total of 250 specimens was captured quarterly between March 2010 and February 2012. Body weight, total length and weight of the gonads were obtained in the laboratory. Gonad samples were submitted to histological and histochemical techniques. Females with spawning capable ovaries were used to determine the fecundity and relative fecundity. Sex ratio with 1:1.01 (female:male) was observed. Males were more numerous than females for individuals smaller than 170 mm, however the number of females was significantly greater for specimens larger than 330 mm. The length-weight relationship estimated for H. francisci indicates negative-allometric growth. Females spawning capable were observed mostly in November-December-January. Two cohorts of oocytes at a determined time evidencing the development type group-synchronic. The eggs reaching 3.4 mm and the fecundity ranged from 312-1,460 oocytes with an average of 585.81 ± 337.43 oocytes per female. The reproductive parameters and population structure of H. francisci from Itapecerica River suggested that this species showed singular reproductive tactics among congeners.

Abstract
SummaryThis study shows for the first time the presence of a jelly coat on oocytes of neotropical Characiformes fish. This structure could be responsible for the adhesiveness of Astyanax bimaculatus oocytes, a species widely distributed in South America including in the São Francisco River basin in Brazil. Adult specimens of A. bimaculatus were submitted to artificial reproduction in order to analyse the egg morphology and embryonic development. The eggs were fertilised and kept in incubators with a water temperature of 24°C so that embryogenesis could be monitored. Ovulated and unfertilised oocytes were also collected and submitted to routine histological techniques. Astyanax bimaculatus oocytes were found to be spherical, yellowish, and covered by a thin jelly coat with a slightly adhesive surface. The mean oocyte diameter was 1.03 ± 0.03 mm, the perivitelline space was 0.21 ± 0.02 mm and the jelly coat's thickness was 0.04 ± 0.01 mm. Positive periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) stain and Alcian blue stain pH 2.5 indicated the presence of neutral glycoproteins, and carboxylated acid glycoconjugates on the jelly coat that formed mucosubstances that may be associated with egg adhesiveness. At a water temperature of 24°C, blastopore closure and hatching occurred at 5 h and 17 h after fertilisation, respectively. The results of this study provide essential information for phylogenetic studies and for a better understanding of the reproductive strategy of A. bimaculatus, currently included in the incertae sedis group of the Characidae family due to the lack of monophyly among the families of the group.

Abstract
Body size and diet of organisms are fundamental attributes which determine their ecology and natural history. Iheringichthys labrosus is one of the most common fish species of the Uruguay River. However, its natural history is poorly known and there is little information about its diet and interactions with other species. This paper describes the feeding habits of this species, relating feeding patterns to the size classes and morphometry of individuals and to the temporal variations. Fishes were captured in May and November of 2006 in three zones of the lower Uruguay River. A total of 101 stomach contents was analyzed (standard length: 60-224 mm). The species exhibited a broad feeding spectrum with most items belonging to the benthic community. We found significant diet differences between size classes and studied months. However, we have not found a close relationship between changes in morphometric variables and diet shifts between size classes.

Abstract
The morphofunctional aspects of oogenesis of Poecilia vivipara were studied aiming to understand the reproductive biology and development of species with internal fertilization, particularly those belonging to the family Poeciliidae. The stages of gonadal maturation and follicular development were characterized using mesoscopic, histological, histochemical, and lectin cytochemical analyses. Through mesoscopic evaluation the ovarian development was classified in six phases of development: immature, in maturation I, in maturation II, mature I, mature II, and post-spawn. Based on microscopic examination of the ovaries, we identified the presence of oocytes types I and II during the previtellogenic phase and types III, IV, and V during the vitellogenic phase. As oogenesis proceeded the oocyte cytosol increased in volume and presented increased cytoplasmic granule accumulation, characterizing vitellogenesis. The zona radiata (ZR) increased in thickness and complexity, and the follicular epithelium, which was initially thin and consisting of pavimentous cells, in type III oocytes exhibited cubic simple cells. The histochemical and cytochemical analyses revealed alterations in the composition of the molecular structures that form the ovarian follicle throughout the gonadal development. Our study demonstrated differences in the female reproductive system among fish species with internal and external fertilization and we suggest P. vivipara can be used as experimental model to test environmental toxicity.

Abstract
Extracellular matrix in the ovarian follicle has been characterised for several mammalian species but there are no reports that describe the immunolocalisation of the extracellular matrix elements, matrix metalloproteinases, and its relation to plasma 17β estradiol levels and follicular apoptosis during the teleost's reproductive cycle. The present study used immunohistochemistry to characterise the distribution of laminin β2, collagen type IV, fibronectin and matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9). The TUNEL in situ technique was used to quantify apoptosis and indirect immunofluorimetric to determine plasma 17β estradiol levels. The TUNEL-positive reaction associated with morphological features exhibited follicular apoptosis. During postovulatory follicle involution, the drop in plasma 17β estradiol levels after spawning contributed to the intense apoptosis observed. By immunohistochemical analysis, laminin β2 and collagen type IV were identified as the major constituents of the basement membrane. The loss of integrity of the basement membrane occurred due to lyses of the major constituents, and coincides with increased follicular apoptosis. The integrity of the basement membrane is important for the survival of follicular cells. Furthermore, the MMP-9 results suggest that this enzyme is involved in final oocyte maturation and regression of postovulatory follicles. Fibronectin was observed on the surface of follicular cells of the postovulatory follicle in P. argenteus, this being important for maintaining normal cell adhesion to extracellular matrix. In conclusion, our results suggest that the structure and composition of the extracellular matrix, and plasma 17β estradiol levels related to apoptosis, play an important role during the follicular development and post-spawning involution in teleost fishes.

Abstract
The covering of the eggs in Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii consists of three envelopes (the vitelline envelope, chorion and extrachorion) and is equipped with multiple micropyles. The most proximal to the oocyte is the vitelline envelope that consists of four layers of filamentous and trabecular material. The structural components of this envelope are synthesized by the oocyte (primary envelope). The chorion encloses the vitelline envelope. The extrachorion covers the external surface of the egg. Examination of the arrangement of layers that comprise the egg envelopes together with the ultrastructure of follicular cells revealed that the chorion and extrachorion are secondary envelopes. They are secreted by follicular cells and are built of homogeneous material. During formation of egg envelopes, the follicular cells gradually diversify into three morphologically different populations: 1) cells covering the animal oocyte region (cuboid), (2) main body cells (cylindrical) and (3) micropylar cells. The apical surfaces of follicular cells from the first two populations form processes that remain connected with the oocyte plasma membrane by means of gap junctions. Micropylar cells are located at the animal region of the oocyte. Their apical parts bear projections that form a barrier to the deposition of materials for egg envelopes, resulting in the formation of the micropylar canal.

Abstract
In the Juramento Reservoir, south-eastern Brazil, the white piranha Serrasalmus brandtii showed a prolonged reproductive season, with evidence for multiple spawning and a reproductive peak associated with seasonal rains. The egg surface exhibited a honeycomb-like pore canal arrangement and an adhesive apparatus surrounding the micropyle. Electron microscopic analysis suggests a role for the micropylar cell and neighbouring follicular cells in secretion of substances for egg attachment.

Abstract
SummaryThe black armoured catfish Rhinelepis aspera is an important commercial species found in the São Francisco River (Brazil) that has great potential for pisciculture. This paper presents, for the first time, information on the embryogenesis and larval development of this species. The breeder fish were subjected to spawning induction with crude carp pituitary extract. Eggs were kept in incubators at 24°C and embryogenesis was observed with a stereomicroscope until hatching. Ovary fragments, samples of recently extruded oocytes and larvae were fixed in Bouin's solution and subjected to routine histology techniques. Recently extruded oocytes were also analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Females (80%) had a positive response to hypophysation. Oocyte extrusion was performed at 8 h and 30 min after the second hormone injection and the fertilization rate achieved 72.4 ± 8.8%. Recently extruded oocytes had a mean diameter of 1360.80 ± 40.87 μm and presented a conspicuous jelly coat covering the zona pellucida. Histochemical reactions indicated the presence of neutral glycoproteins in the yolk globules and in the zona pellucida. These reactions also indicated the presence of neutral glycoproteins and carboxylated acid glycoconjugates in the follicular cells and the jelly coat. These compounds form mucosubstances that can be related to the adhesiveness of the eggs. Under the SEM the oocytes presented a micropyle disc and a thick jelly coat over their surface. The closure of the blastopore occurred 9 h and 40 min after fertilization and embryogenesis was completed at 45 h and 50 min after fertilization, when the embryos were incubated at 24°C. The total absorption of the yolk sac occurred during the fifth day indicating the need for an exogenous food supply. These results provide essential information for the successful breeding and management of the promising R. aspera.

Abstract
The gonad morphology and gametogenesis of Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1877 from Santo Antônio river (Minas Gerais, Brazil) were studied through anatomical and histological techniques. Examination of the testis revealed that they were paired, fringed organs with two distinct regions: cranial spermatogenic and caudal spermatogenic and secretory. The cranial region represents ca. 60% of the mature/maturing testis, containing 41 to 73 fringes, while the caudal portion represents ca. 40% and contains 44 to 68 fringes. At the cranial portion the length of the fringes was 3.70 ± 1.70 mm and in the caudal portion was 0.20 ± 0.10 mm. The spermatogenesis was cystic, synchronic, and occurred throughout the whole extension of the seminiferous tubules. The ovaries were saculiforms, paired organs, which present ovigerous lamellae containing cells of the oogenic lineage. The oocytes were classified into four developmental stages according to their cytological characteristics and the characteristics of the cell layers that surround them.
