Abstract
PURPOSE This review aims to compare and evaluate the outcomes achieved by integrating technological aids and the influence of different implant designs in the reconstruction of post-traumatic orbital defects. METHODS Electronic searches of the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases until March 2023 were conducted. Clinical controlled trials, observational studies, cohort studies, and retrospective studies were identified and included. The predictor variables were the integration of technological aids namely, computer-assisted surgical planning, mirror image overlay, and intraoperative navigation with the utilization of different orbital implant designs (standard orbital meshes, preformed implants, prebent implants, and patient-specific implant [PSI]) during post-traumatic orbital reconstruction. The primary outcome variables were orbital volume, diplopia, and enophthalmos. Weighted or mean difference and risk ratios at 95% confidence intervals were calculated, where P < .05 was considered significant and a random effects model was adopted. RESULTS This review included 7 studies with 560 participants. The results indicate that the difference in postoperative orbital volume between affected and nonaffected eye showed no statistically significant difference between PSI and prebent group (mean difference, -0.41 P = .28, I2 = 46%). PSI group resulted in diplopia 0.71-fold less than that of the standard orbital mesh group but was not statistically significant (P = .15). Standard orbital mesh group is 0.30 times at higher risk of developing enophthalmos as compared to PSI group (P = .010). The literature suggests PSIs are preferred for patients with large defects (Jaquiéry's III-IV), whereas prebent implants are equally effective as PSIs in patients with preserved infraorbital buttress and retrobulbar bulge. CONCLUSION PSIs are associated with improved outcomes, especially for correcting enophthalmos. The data suggests the potential efficacy of prebent implants and PSIs in orbital volume corrections. There is a lack of randomized studies. This review should serve as a recommendation for further studies to contribute to the existing literature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the incidence of ophthalmologic pathology at presentation of patients with orbital fracture to a level I trauma centre and the most significant associated risk factors. METHODS A total of 244 patients with 278 fractured orbits over a 2-year period at a level I trauma centre were reviewed. The primary outcome was the incidence of urgent ophthalmologic pathology, defined as requiring attention without delay. Patient demographics, history, findings on radiographic imaging, and physical examination findings at initial and follow-up examinations were recorded. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS On initial examination and follow-up, 9.7% of orbits had ophthalmologic pathology. Only 3 patients (1.1%) had urgent pathology, including orbital compartment syndrome and globe rupture, whereas 22 patients (7.9%) had semiurgent pathology and 4 patients (1.4%) had nonurgent pathology. Subjective decreased vision (odds ratio [OR] = 3.5; p = 0.021), assault-related injuries (OR = 2.4; p = 0.036), work-related injuries (OR = 7.7; p = 0.004), afferent pupillary defect (OR = 19.2; p = 0.017), anisocoria (OR = 7.8; p = 0.001), and symmetrical extraocular movement limitation (OR = 5.2; p = 0.003) and fixed pupil (OR = 16.9; p < 0.001) had statistically significant odds ratios associated with pathology. Patient sex, eye involved, intoxication, anticoagulation, and antiplatelets, as well as previous ocular surgery, were not associated with pathology. CONCLUSIONS Most orbital fractures do not present with ophthalmologic pathology. Subjective vision loss, history of assault or work trauma, and pupil abnormalities on examination were the greatest risk factors for pathology. Our results highlight the most important factors on patient presentation that should prompt first responders to seek urgent ophthalmologic consultation.

Abstract
Study Design Prospective Interventional study. Objective To evaluate the efficiency of Matrixmidface preformed Orbital plates for three-dimensional reconstruction of orbital floor and medial wall fractures. Methods This prospective institutional clinical study was conducted on a group of 14 patients who underwent repair of orbital floor and medial wall fracture defects using Matrixmidface Preformed Orbital plates and open reduction and internal fixation of associated fractures. The following parameters were studied preoperative and postoperative enophthalmos, hypoglobus, orbital volume; correction of diplopia, intraoperative and postoperative complications. Results All 14 patients were males aged between 19 and 42 years. The most common mode of injury was found to be road traffic accidents (RTAs) followed by self-fall and trauma at workplace. Orbital fractures were associated with other concomitant maxillofacial fractures in 12 patients (85.7%) while 2 patients (14.3%) had pure blowout fractures. Significant improvement of enophthalmos was noted from preoperative period to 1 week, 6 weeks, and 6 months postoperatively (P value .02, .01, and .01, respectively). Out of 11 patients with preoperative hypoglobus, 5 patients (45.45%) had persistent hypoglobus in the immediate postoperative period which reduced to 4 patients (36.36%) at 6 weeks postoperatively (p value .00). The postoperative orbital volume of fractured side ranged from 20.3 cm3 to 26.76 cm3 with a mean of 23.50 cm3 ± 1.74. The mean difference between the volumes of the repaired and uninjured sides was found to be .27 cm3 ± .39 (P value .02) denoting that the reconstruction of the orbit closely approximated that of the uninjured side. Conclusions The Matrixmidface Preformed Orbital plate provides exceptional reconstruction of the orbital blowout fracture defects and ensures satisfactory results clinically and radiographically. The plate ensures an approximate recreation of topographical anatomy of the orbit and adequately restores the orbital volume. It provides adequate correction of asymmetry, hypoglobus, enophthalmos and attempts to restore eye movements, without causing any significant postoperative complication.

Abstract
Fracture characteristics and postoperative outcomes of patients presenting with orbital fractures in Baltimore remain poorly investigated. The purpose of our study was to determine the fracture patterns, etiologies, and postoperative outcomes of patients treated for orbital fractures at 2 level I trauma centers in Baltimore. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent orbital fracture repair at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the Johns Hopkins Hospital from January 2015 to December 2019. Of 374 patients, 179 (47.9%) had orbital fractures due to violent trauma, 252 (67.4%) had moderate to near-total orbital fractures, 345 (92.2%) had orbital floor involvement, and 338 (90.4%) had concomitant neurological symptoms/signs. Almost half of the patients had at least one postoperative ocular symptom/sign [n = 163/333 (48.9%)]. Patients who had orbital fractures due to violent trauma were more likely to develop postoperative ocular symptoms/signs compared with those who had orbital fractures due to nonviolent trauma [n = 88/154 (57.1%), n = 75/179 (41.9%); P = 0.006]. After controlling for factors pertaining to injury severity, there was no significant difference in patient throughput or incidence of any postoperative ocular symptom/sign after repair between the two centers. Timely management of patients with orbital fractures due to violent trauma is crucial to mitigate the risk of postoperative ocular symptoms/signs.

Abstract
Isolated orbital floor fractures are more frequent due to low bone thickness (2 mm). The aim of this study was to conduct a retrospective epidemiological analysis on these fractures, investigating demographic variables and fractures' features and their statistical correlation. A total of 120 patients with isolated orbital floor fracture, admitted at the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of University of Naples Federico II, from 2010 to 2022 were enrolled in the study. Patients were evaluated for age, sex, smoke, comorbidities, post-traumatic clinical manifestation,s and defect side and size. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson regression coefficient (r). The fractures were more frequent in men (male:female 2.2:1) because of road accidents (30% of cases). The average age was 48 years. Enophthalmos, diplopia and ocular motility anomalies were observed in 31%, 23% and 21% of cases, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that age was related to fracture area; in particular, older patients showed larger fractures (p < 0.001). Interpersonal violence and traffic accidents were related to younger age (p < 0.001). Data analysis revealed that isolated orbital floor fractures are more frequent in young men (<40 years) because of road accidents or interpersonal violence. There is a statistical correlation between fracture area and patient age; in particular, older age corresponds to larger defects.

Abstract
Craniomaxillofacial trauma is primarily diagnosed and managed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Among the cases encountered, midface fractures involving orbital walls are highly prevalent. In these fractures, involvement of the orbital walls, particularly floor of the orbit, can lead to considerable aesthetic and functional limitations. From a maxillofacial perspective, indications for surgical repair of orbital floor encompass marked decrease in ocular motility, fracture affecting more than 50% of surface area, an increase in orbital volume exceeding 18% and enophthalmos greater than 2 mm. In the absence of these discernible signs, surgical intervention is not generally indicated. However, in this case, an early adolescent with a history of midface trauma and minimal orbital floor fracture 8 months earlier presented with progressively delayed onset enophthalmos and hypoglobus closely resembling features of silent sinus syndrome. The enophthalmos and hypoglobus were corrected by placing custom-made non-resorbable high-density polyethylene implant in the orbital floor. Postoperative follow-up demonstrated aesthetically and functionally satisfactory outcomes.

Abstract
Orbital floor fractures are a common manifestation of facial trauma that is encountered by ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and oral maxillofacial specialists. Surgical intervention is required emergently in cases of tissue entrapment and less urgently in cases of presenting with persistent diplopia, enophthalmos greater than 2 mm, and/or fractures involving greater than 50% of the orbital floor. Surgical management is a debated topic with differing opinions among surgeons regarding timing of repair, type of implant, and surgical approach.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe demographic and clinical features of emergency department patients presenting with fracture-associated (FA) or fracture-independent retrobulbar hemorrhage (RBH). METHODS The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample database 2018 and 2019 was used to compare demographic and clinical features of patients with fracture-independent RBH and FA RBH. RESULTS A total of 444 fracture-independent and 359 FA RBH patients were identified. Demographics such as age distribution, gender, and payer type differed significantly, with young (21-44 years), privately insured males more likely to develop FA RBH and the elderly (65+ years) more likely to develop fracture-independent RBH. Prevalence of hypertension and anticoagulation did not differ, but substance use and ocular-related injuries were more prevalent in the FA RBH. CONCLUSION Presentations of RBH differ in demographic and clinical features. Further research is needed to explore trends and guide decision-making in the emergency department.

Abstract
Orbital floor fractures are common injuries seen in the emergency department (ED). In this study, the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB, 2016-2017) was used to identify patients presenting with isolated orbital floor trauma. Patient-specific factors were analyzed to determine associations with management. The sample comprised 912 patients; 285 (31.3%) of these patients were discharged from the ED, 541 (59.3%) were admitted to the hospital but did not undergo an operation, and 86 (9.4%) underwent operative treatment. Pediatric patients and older patients (<18 years and>55 years) were more likely to be admitted than those aged 18-55 years, and pediatric patients were more likely to undergo an urgent operative intervention than those in the other age groups (all P < 0.001). Patients with alcohol use disorder (P = 0.002) and hypertension (P = 0.004) had increased odds of admission. Private and Medicare insurance patients were more likely to be admitted, and self-pay patients less likely (P < 0.001). Older age and Medicaid payor status showed increased odds of a greater hospital length of stay. Biological sex, race/ethnicity, functionally dependent health status, myocardial infarction, steroid use, and substance use disorder were not associated with discharge disposition. There are non-injury related, patient-specific factors that may influence the management of orbital floor fractures.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the quality of life (QOL), before and after surgery, of patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for orbital fractures. STUDY DESIGN A prospective study. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING The self-report outcome measures of 50 patients treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiamusi University from January 2016 to June 2019 were prospectively collected. MAIN MEASURES The quality of life was assessed using four patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): the 15D questionnaire, Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36). Both descriptive and comparative data analyses were calculated. RESULTS Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures were the most encountered (40.3%). The total OHIP-14 scores before and after treatment were 1.72 and 1.68, respectively. Vision, breathing, sleeping, eating, usual activities, discomfort and symptoms, and vitality showed minimal changes in the 15D questionnaire. The HADS scores were ranged from 0 to 7, indicating no anxiety or depression. The comparison of SF-36 scores after 3 months and after ≥6 months of treatment revealed no significant difference. CONCLUSIONS Patients' QOL was minimally impacted by orbital fractures and their treatments. The severity of the negative impact can be minimized if appropriate management strategies are taken.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to examine the incidence and demographic characteristics of patients with orbital walls fractures who were treated in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of a tertiary hospital in Jordan. Material and Methods A retrospective cohort study of patients with a diagnosis of with selected orbital walls fracture was designed and implemented, during a two-year period between January 2020 and December 2021. Information on patients treated for orbital walls fractures were retrieved and analyzed regarding age, sex, etiology, anatomical site, and treatment modality. Descriptive data presented as simple frequencies and percentages. Results A total of 76 patients with 100 orbital wall fractures, age range was 4-68 years old with a mean age 28 (SD±12), of whom were 53 (69.7%) were male and 23(30.3%) were female, with male:female ratio was 2:1. The most common etiology of all orbital walls fractures was RTA in 47 patients (61.8%; P ≤0.021), followed by violence in male patients. The most prevalent age-group was 21-30 years old with 16 patients (21.05%; P ≤0.235), and single orbital wall fractures 56 (56%) were more common than combined orbital wall fractures. Conclusions In conclusion, this study will contribute to identifying the best clinical therapy and protective techniques for individuals with orbital fractures. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillofacial fractures are a common cause of visits to emergency department, accounting for more than 400,000 annual visits in the United States. Gold standard diagnostic tool is conventional computerized tomography (CT) or 3DCT reconstruction. However, the disadvantages of CT are radiation exposure, unavailable in some hospital and expensiveness. Whereas the bony structures overlap is a problem in diagnostic when using plain film X-ray. The objective of this study is to show the accuracy of a linear-probe ultrasound compared to computed tomography and plain film X-ray in diagnosis of infraorbital rim fracture. METHODS Patients clinically suspected of an inferior orbital rim fracture underwent linear-probe ultrasonographic investigation, plain film X-ray and CT. CT was used as gold standard in this diagnostic study. A radiologist and senior resident of plastic surgery were the examiner and interobserver for comparison. RESULT A total of 34 patients with suspected infraorbital rim fractures were investigated. Sensitivity of the linear-probe ultrasonography versus CT in the detection of infraorbital rim fracture was 92.9% (95% CI 66.1-99.8), specificity was 90.0% (95% CI 68.3-98.8), positive predictive value was 86.7% (95% CI 59.5-98.3), negative predictive value was 94.7% ( 95% CI 74.0-99.9), accuracy 91%. CONCLUSION Linear probe ultrasonography is a good diagnostic tool and has better reliability than the plain film X-ray and can be used as alternative to CT in inferior orbital rim fracture.

Abstract
Extraocular muscles that are entrapped in orbital fracture sites require emergent surgical treatment. Muscle entrapment can present with subtle findings or mimic other conditions, contributing to delays in diagnosis. Here, we present two cases of extraocular muscle entrapment that were not immediately identified. By discussing the diagnostic challenge in these cases, we aim to increase the comfort of all physicians in identifying muscle entrapment in the emergency department.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to execute an evidence-based review answering the following question (PICO): "Do patient-specific implants (PSI), manufactured or designed using computer-assisted technology, improve outcomes (orbital volume change, enophthalmos, diplopia, and operative duration) compared to conventional methods in orbital reconstruction following traumatic orbital injury in the adult patient population?" We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria included any comparative paper whereby computer-assisted technology was used in the prefabrication or design process of implants for use in post-traumatic orbital reconstruction. Paediatric patient populations were excluded. Eight databases were systematically searched for relevant studies. Risk of bias was assessed through the NOS and RoB2 tools. Random-effects models were used to identify differences in outcomes between groups where possible. Analysis was performed using R 4.0.0. Eleven of 4784 identified studies were included, comprising 628 adult patients, with 302 and 326 patients in the patient-specific and conventional groups, respectively. Weighted mean difference between unaffected and post-operative orbital volume was 0.32 ml (SD 0.75) and 0.95 ml (SD 1.03) for patient-specific and conventional groups, respectively. Significant improvement was identified in post-operative orbital volume reconstitution with the use of PSI, compared to conventional implants, in 3 of the 5 reporting studies. Equally, post-operative enophthalmos trended towards lower severity in the patient-specific group, with 11.2% of patients affected in the patient-specific group and 19.2% in the conventional group, and operative duration was significantly reduced with the use of PSI in 3 of the 6 reporting studies. Despite a tendency to favour PSI, no statistically significant differences in key outcomes were identified on meta-analysis. Although there is some encouraging data to support improved outcomes with the use of patient-specific orbital implants in post-traumatic reconstruction, there is, at present, no statistically significant evidence to objectively support their use over conventional implants based on the currently available comparative studies. Based on the results of this study, the choice of implant used should, thus, be left to the discretion of the surgeon.

Abstract
Operative repair of orbital fractures utilizes implants constructed of a plethora of materials that vary in cost. Surgeon preference as well as fracture complexity may dictate the implant chosen. In this study, we retrospectively compared the complication rates of the four most common types of implants utilized at our institution. We found no significant difference in complication rates in our sample of 88 patients. Additionally, the least expensive implant was as effective as the most expensive implant in addressing isolated orbital blowout fractures. This situation is not unique to the field of oculoplastics. As evidenced from published literature in other areas of surgery, from orthopaedics to orthodontics, cheaper alternatives often afford similar outcomes as more expensive options. We herein argue that a cost-effective approach should be considered while still allowing for high quality of care, in the face of rising health care costs and health disparities in America.

Abstract
Orbital fractures are common in facial trauma and can be a challenge to treat. Understanding anatomy of the orbit, the clinical evaluation, indications for surgery, surgical approaches, complications, and postoperative are essential in providing appropriate treatment for patients who have sustained orbital fractures. In this article, the authors review the diagnostic evaluation, acute management, treatment options, and common complications of orbital fractures, as well as recent advancements in orbital fracture repairs.

Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used for the diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis of pure orbital fractures of the orbital floor and medial wall. The aim of this study was to systematically review the current literature in order to establish an overview of CT parameters relevant to the choice of treatment and (long-term) clinical outcome for patients treated operatively and conservatively. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Databases were searched using the terms 'orbital fracture' and 'computed tomography'. Studies evaluating the relationship between CT parameters and the treatment decision or clinical outcome (enophthalmos, diplopia, and/or limitation of ocular movement) were included. The search yielded 4448 results of which 31 were included (except for three, all were retrospective). The systematic use of CT imaging in orbital fractures of the floor and the medial wall can be of great value in the treatment decision and prediction of (long-term) clinical outcomes for both conservatively and surgically treated patients. The following parameters were found to be the most relevant: fracture size, fracture location, orbital volume, soft tissue involvement, and craniocaudal dimension. Although some show great individual potential, it is likely that incorporating all parameters into an algorithm will provide the best predictive power and thus would be the most practically applicable tool.

Abstract
Introduction:
This study aims to describe the epidemiology, aetiology and therapy of orbital fractures in a large municipal hospital in The Hague, the Netherlands, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated approach of orbital trauma care with a team consisting of an ophthalmologist, an orthoptist and an oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgeon.
Methods:
We obtained data from patients with an orbital fracture between June 2015 until July 2018. Primary outcomes were the classification of orbital fractures and treatment (conservative or surgical).
Results:
182 patients were included in this study. The most common type of orbital fracture was an isolated orbital floor fracture (n=56, 30.8%). In most cases, therapy was conservative (69.2%). When surgical repair was indicated, a polydioxanone (PDS) plate was most commonly used (11.5%). The main cause of an orbital fracture was a fall accident (38.5%), followed by assault (32.4%). 32.4% of the patients were intoxicated with alcohol.
Conclusion:
In our study population, almost 70% (69.2%) of the patients were treated conservatively in our study. Compared to the international literature, this percentage is considerably higher than in other studies. In our opinion, our integrated approach to orbital trauma has led to a justifiable reduction of the proportion of cases receiving surgical intervention in orbital fractures. We would like to advocate the implementation of a similar team in other hospitals to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of treatment in patients with orbital fractures.

Abstract
PURPOSE We analyze the detectability of intraorbital foreign bodies (OrbFBs) of various types and sizes using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging using a three-Tesla machine (MRI 3 T). METHODS An ex vivo model of sheep eyes with preserved extraocular muscles and orbital fat tissue placed in the orbital cavity of the human skull was created for this study. Foreign bodies made of four different materials - plastic, bottle glass, stone and wood - each in three different sizes (large, intermediate and small) were inserted into the soft tissue of the orbit in the extraocular space. Each orbit was scanned by CT and MRI. Images were analyzed by a senior radiologist and underwent masked review by three oculoplastic surgeons. RESULTS Analysis of MRI and CT scans identified distinguishing characteristics for each of the four materials. This information was further integrated into a clinical algorithm. CT allowed easier identification of most of the embedded materials compared to MRI. Smaller OrbFB size was associated with lower detectability. Review of CT yielded 94.4% agreement between oculoplastic specialists in detecting OrbFbs using CT scans and allowed detection of most OrbFBs. In contrast, the overall agreement with MRI was lower: 66.7% with T1 MPRAGE, 50% with T1TSE, 88.9% with T2 TSE and 72.2% with T2 TSE FS. Plastic was the most difficult material to detect in all size categories. CONCLUSIONS CT offers a clear advantage over MRI for detecting and localizing nonmetallic OrbFBs of all sizes, except for plastic. Plastic OrbFBs can be detected with CT depending on size but are more visible in MRI scans.

Study of Pediatric Operative Recreational Trauma: A Retrospective Analysis of Pediatric Sports-Related Facial Fractures. J Craniofac Surg 2021; 32:1611-1614. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the United States, most school-aged children participate in some form of organized sports. Despite the advantages to social and physical development that organized sports may have, these activities also place a significant number of America's youth at risk for facial injuries. Pediatric facial fractures resulting from sports trauma are well documented within pediatric literature. Despite knowledge of the importance of safety equipment, there is a continued need for increased awareness about fracture patterns resulting from sports injuries to develop better strategies for their prevention. METHODS A retrospective review of all pediatric patients (age <18) who presented to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital as a level 1 trauma between January 2006 and December 2015 with radiologically confirmed facial fractures was performed. Data regarding patient demographic information, mechanism of injury, facial fracture location, associated injuries, hospital course, and need for surgical intervention was collected. RESULTS Of the 1274 patients reviewed, 135 (10.59%) were found to have facial fractures resulting from sports trauma and were included in our cohort. The median age was 14 with 77.8% of the cohort being male. The most common fractures identified were orbital (n = 75), mandibular (n = 42), nasal (n = 27), maxilla (n = 26). Fractures were more frequently related to involvement in baseball/softball and bicycling n = 46 and n = 31 respectively. Eighty-two (60.74%) patients required admission, 6 requiring ICU level care, 70 (51.85%) were found to require surgery. There were 14 patients who were found to have a concomitant skull fracture and 6 with TBI. There were no fatalities in this cohort of patients. CONCLUSION Pediatric facial fractures occur in the same anatomic locations as adult facial fractures. However, their frequency, severity, and treatment vary because of important anatomical and developmental differences in these populations. Despite available knowledge on this subject and increased use of protective equipment, pediatric facial fractures continue to occur with similar distribution as historically described. While sports participation confers numerous benefits, it is vital that we continue researching pediatric facial trauma and associated fractures to develop protective equipment and protocols to mitigate the risks of these activities.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether orbital fracture increases the risk of dry eye syndrome (DES) and identified the profile of prognostic factors. We studied a cohort from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Overall, 46,179 and 184,716 participants were enrolled in the study and control groups, respectively. Each patient in the case group was age- and gender-matched to four individuals without orbital fracture that served as the control group. Cox proportional hazards analysis regression was used to estimate the risks of incident DES. During the follow-up period, the case group was more likely to develop incident DES (0.17%) than the control group (0.11%) (p = 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that the case group had a 4.917-fold increased risk of DES compared to the controls. In the stratified age group, orbital fracture had the highest impact on patients aged 18–29 years. Furthermore, patients with orbital roof fracture have a greater risk of developing DES. Regardless of whether having received surgery or not, the patients with orbital fracture have higher risks of DES. Our study demonstrated that orbital fracture increases the risk of developing subsequent DES. Early recognition by thorough examinations with raised awareness in the clinical setting could preserve visual function and prevent further complications.

Abstract
Fractures of the orbit often require operative repair with materials ranging from autologous tissue to titanium implants. Reconstructive techniques of the lateral orbital rim and wall offer a unique challenge due to the structural and aesthetic demands with regard to its natural contour. The authors present a case in which a patient sustained a ballistic injury involving the lateral orbital rim and wall requiring reconstruction. The authors employed the use of a single titanium orbital mesh fan plate (DePuy Synthes, Warsaw IN) in an injury-specific and cost-effective technique to rapidly restore the contour and structure of the lateral orbit rivaling the result of a 3D printed custom plate.

Abstract
Objective To perform a comprehensive review and analysis of surgically treated orbital fractures. Study Design Retrospective cohort chart review study for surgically treated orbital fractures during 5 years. Results A total of 173 patients (average age 41.6 years) were diagnosed with orbital fractures. Most were male with a ratio of 3.3:1. Most fractures were caused by assault (39.3%); 22.5% of the cases were bilateral. The left orbit (40.5%) was fractured more than the right. The orbital floor (97.1%) was the most common anatomic location and the maxilla (65.3%) was the most commonly involved bone. The average time from trauma to surgical intervention was 8.7 ± 14.6 days and the average time from surgical intervention to discharge was 5.1 ± 9.0 days. The transconjunctival incision (63%) was the most commonly used incision, and nonresorbable implant (92.7%) was the most commonly used implant. Finally, the length of stay for the repair of a simple orbital fracture was less than for complex orbital fracture (1.5 days and 5.9 days, respectively). Conclusion Understanding the patterns and mechanisms of injury associated with orbital fractures can assist in developing standardized treatment protocols across all surgical specialties. This would ultimately allow for a uniform high quality of surgical care for patients with maxillofacial fractures.
