Abstract
Ovarium torsion is a gynecological emergency that is common in women of reproductive age and requires early diagnosis and intervention. In this study, we aimed to investigate the long-term anatomical, histological and biochemical protective effects of lamotrigine in ovariums in the ischemia - reperfusion (I-R) model created experimentally in rats. A total of 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats, 14 weeks old, weighing 220-270 g were used in the study. The subjects were randomly distributed to form 4 groups named SHAM group, I - R group, I - R + Lamotrigine (LTG) group and R + LTG group. Under general anesthesia, the ovaries of the rats were reached and ischemia was created for 3 h with vascular clamps. 20 mg / kg LTG was administered intraperitoneally (ip.) to group 3 30 min before ischemia and to group 4 30 min before reperfusion. At the third hour of ischemia, the vascular clamps were opened and the abdomen of the rats was closed according to the surgical procedure. The rats were followed up for 28 days postoperatively and the ovarium tissues taken on the 28th day were examined anatomically and histologically. Biochemically, estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and antimullerian hormone (AMH) levels were measured from blood samples taken from their hearts. Granulosa cells with diffuse vaculations were observed in degenerative follicles in group I-R. Again in this group, severe hemorrhage, fibrosis and edematous areas were observed in the ovarium stroma (Ovarian Histopathological Scoring (OHS): 7). In the I - R + LTG group, OHS was statistically significantly lower than the I - R group (OHS: 2; p < 0.000). In the R + LTG group, although the OHS score was calculated to be lower than the I - R group, there was no statistically significant difference (OHS: 6; p > 0.05). The protective effect of LTG against experimentally created ischemia and reperfusion damage was determined anatomically and histologically. No protective effect of LTG was observed in terms of FSH, E2 and AMH values measured from the blood sera of rats. These findings may provide a basis for future studies using LTG to treat ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Abstract
Vaccinium uliginosum L. (commonly known as bog bilberry) and Vaccinium myrtillus L. (commonly known as bilberry) are species of the genus Vaccinium (family Ericaceae). The red-purple-blue coloration of blueberries is attributed largely to the anthocyanins found in bilberries. Anthocyanins, known for their potent biological activity as antioxidants, have a significant involvement in the prophylaxis of cancer or other diseases, including those of metabolic origin. Bilberry is the most important economically wild berry in Northern Europe, and it is also extensively used in juice and food production. A review of the latest literature was performed to assess the composition and biological activity of V. uliginosum and V. myrtillus. Clinical studies confirm the benefits of V. uliginosum and V. myrtillus supplementation as part of a healthy diet. Because of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and apoptosis-reducing activity, both bog bilberries and bilberries can be used interchangeably as a dietary supplement with anti-free radical actions in the prevention of cancer diseases and cataracts, or as a component of sunscreen preparations.

Abstract
Rosmarinic acid having potential anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging activity. We examined the chemotherapeutic effect of rosmarinic against cisplatin (CIS)-induced ovarian toxicity via modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation. Swiss BALB mice used in experimental protocol and mice were divided into different groups. Intraperitoneal injection of CIS (7 mg/kg) was used for ovarian cancer induction. The rats were received rosmarinic acid (2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg, body weight) treatment for 22 weeks. Body weight, ovary weight food, and water intake were estimated at regular time intervals. Hormonal and antioxidant parameters were estimated in the ovary tissue and serum at the end of the study. Cytokines, inflammatory, and apoptosis parameters were determined at the end of the study. Finally, the ovary tissue histopathology was performed at end of the experimental study. Rosmarinic acid significantly (p < 0.001) improved the body weight and reduced the ovary weight. Rosmarinic acid considerably reduced the hormonal assay parameters, such as antimullerian hormone, estradiol, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone compared to model control mice. Rosmarinic treatment significantly (p < 0.001) reduced the level of nitric oxide, myeloperoxidase, and boosted the level of antioxidant parameters, such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in serum and ovary tissue. Rosmarinic acid downregulated the cytokines like interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β; inflammatory parameter includes prostaglandin E2 , cyclooxygenase-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase at a dose-dependently. Ovary tissue histopathology showed improvement after rosmarinic acid treatment. The result suggests that rosmarinic acid is a protective effect in ameliorating CIS-induced ovary toxicity via alteration of inflammatory and apoptosis parameters.

Metformin reduces ovarian ischemia reperfusion injury in rats by improving oxidative/nitrosative stress. Taiwan J Obstet Gynecol 2021; 60:45-50. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the preventive role of metformin on rat ovarian ischemia reperfusion injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty rats were divided equally into five groups; Group 1: sham, Group 2: surgical control with 3-hr torsion and detorsion, Group 3: 50 mg/kg p.o. metformin 30 min before 3-hr torsion, Group 4; metformin just after detorsion, Group 5; metformin 30 min before torsion and just after detorsion. Bilateral ovaries and blood sample were obtained seven days after detorsion for biochemical and histopathological evaluation. RESULTS Ovarian tissue total anti-oxidant status (TAS) levels were significantly increased in group 4 when compared to group 1, 2 and 3 (all p < 0.01). In addition, there was a significant decrease in tissue oxidative stress index (OSI) level in group 4 with respect to group 2 (p < 0.01). Moreover, serum levels of OSI were significantly higher in group 2 with respect to group 1 and 5 (both p < 0.05). Similarly, there was significant increase in serum levels of peroxynitrite in group 2 as compared to serum levels in group 3 and 5 (p < 0.01 and 0.05, respectively). Furthermore, there were significant decrease in histopathological scores metformin and sham groups when compared to rats in the control group (Group 2). CONCLUSION Metformin reduces ischemia reperfusion injury in rat torsion detorsion model by improving histopathological and biochemical findings including TAS, OSI and peroxynitrite.

Abstract
AIM Ovarian torsion is a common gynecological emergency of reproductive ages, occurring at rates of 2.7-7.4%. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects of Nebivolol (NEB) and histopathological changes in experimental ischemic (I) and ischemic-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat ovaries. METHODS Forty-eight adult female rats were randomly separated into six groups as group 1 (control) receiving an oral saline solution for 3 days; group 2 (I) that underwent ischemia for 3 h with the application of atraumatic vascular clips; group 3 (I/R); group 4 (I + NEB) receiving 10 mg/kg NEB by oral gavage 30 min prior to the ischemia induction; group 5 (I/R + NEB) receiving 10 mg/kg NEB, and group 6 (control + NEB) receiving oral 10 mg/kg NEB for 3 days before ischemia induction followed by consequent reperfusion. Ovarian tissue damage was scored by histopathological analysis. Ovarian tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels were measured biochemically. RESULTS The levels of MDA and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and TUNEL assay positivity scores increased in the I and I/R groups. GSH levels decreased in all case groups (P < 0.05). The oral administration of NEB (10 mg/kg) to the I- and I/R-groups reduced the levels of MDA and TNF-α and TUNEL assay immunopositivity scores (P < 0.05). GSH levels increased in the treatment groups. CONCLUSION The current experimental ovarian torsion study suggests a protective role for NEB against I and I/R injury in rat ovaries. NEB may be a novel agent for decreasing ovarian I/R injury.

Abstract
Introduction Ischemia-associated mortality caused by aortic cross-clamps, as in ruptured abdominal aorta aneurysm surgeries, and reperfusion following their removal represent some of the main emergency conditions in cardiovascular surgery. The purpose of our study was to examine the potential protective effect of tea grape against aortic occlusion-induced lung injury using biochemical, histopathological, immunohistochemical, and quantitative analyses. Methods Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into four groups: control (healthy), glycerol + ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) (sham), I/R, and I/R + tea grape. Results Following aortic occlusion, we observed apoptotic pneumocytes, thickening in the alveolar wall, edematous areas in interstitial regions, and vascular congestion. We also observed an increase in pulmonary malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decrease in pulmonary glutathione (GSH). However, tea grape reduced apoptotic pneumocytes, edema, vascular congestion, and MDA levels, while increased GSH levels in lung tissue. Conclusion Our findings suggest that tea grape is effective against aortic occlusion-induced lung injury by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Abstract
Ovarian torsion is a gynecological emergency that leads to serious outcomes. Nicorandil (NIC) is an ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel activator that protects the heart from ischemia. The current study aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of action of NIC in ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (OIR) and possible KATP participation. Twenty-four female albino rats were classified into 4 groups: sham control, OIR, OIR + NIC, OIR + NIC+ glibenclamide (GLB) groups. Serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), ovarian malondialdehyde (MDA), total nitrites (NOx) contents, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were evaluated. Bax and Bcl2 mRNA were also assessed. Histological and immunohistochemical (anti-COX-2 and anti CD68) studies were done. The OIR non-treated group showed histopathological ovarian injury with decreased AMH level. Ovarian MDA, NOx, and Bax mRNA and the expression of COX-2 and CD68 were increased; however, SOD activity and Bcl2 mRNA level were decreased by OIR. NIC significantly ameliorated the histopathological ovarian injury with the restoration of AMH level. NIC significantly corrected oxidative stress and apoptotic biomarkers with decreased COX-2 and CD68 immunostaining. GLB co-administration significantly decreased the protection afforded by NIC. These results imply that NIC has a protective role against OIR via antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects and such protection relies, at least partially, on the KATP channel.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective effect of whortleberry by examining the effects on heart tissue at the molecular level of ischemia-reperfusion injury caused by surgical repair of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Methods Between May 2018 and February 2019, a total of 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into control, sham (ischemia-reperfusion+glycerol), ischemia-reperfusion, and ischemia-reperfusion+whortleberry groups. Hypovolemic shock was applied to the rats in the ischemia-reperfusion groups for one hour. The abdominal aorta was explored following midline laparotomy and atraumatic microvascular clamps were applied from the infrarenal level. Following one-hour ischemia, the clamps were removed, and reperfusion was established for two hours. In the sham group, intraperitoneal glycerol once daily was applied five days before surgery. In the whortleberry group, whortleberry treatment was administered via the intraperitoneal route five days before ischemia-reperfusion. Results The ischemia-reperfusion group exhibited a decrease in the glutathione levels and an increase in the malondialdehyde levels (p<0.01 and p<0.01, respectively). We also observed an increase in the caspase-3 positivity in cardiac myofibrils (p<0.01). Whortleberry administration lowered both malondialdehyde levels and numerical density of caspase-3 positive cardiac myofibrils, while increasing the heart tissue glutathione levels, compared to the ischemia-reperfusion alone group (p<0.01, p=0.011, and p=0.011, respectively). Conclusion Whortleberry may be beneficial in preventing cardiac tissue damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion in the surgical repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Abstract
We investigated the protective effect of iloprost against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat ovary. We used 32 female Sprague-Dawley rats randomly allocated to four experimental groups: sham, ischemia, I/R and I/R + iloprost. Ovarian torsion was established in all rats except the sham group. The torsion group was exposed to ischemia for 3 h. The detorsion group was exposed to 3 h ischemia applied + 3 h reperfusion. The detorsion + iloprost group was exposed to ischemia for 3 h + reperfusion for 3 h + intravenous (IV) iloprost infusion for 60 min starting at the beginning of reperfusion. Ovaries were removed and prepared for histopathological evaluation. Reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the blood. The total histopathological injury score and MDA level of the ischemia group were significantly higher than for the sham group. Ovarian injury score and MDA level following I/R increased compared to the ischemia group. Iloprost administration reduced the total injury score and MDA level. The GSH level was higher in the I/R + iloprost group than in the I/R group. We concluded that IV iloprost administration reduces I/R injury in rat ovarian tissue.
