Abstract
BACKGROUND Bibliometric analysis is a scientific method that can derive insights into major publications' trends within a field. Currently, no bibliometric study has been conducted for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). OBJECTIVE To characterize the most frequently cited articles in MMS. METHODS Web of Science was used to identify the 100 most cited publications on MMS between 1970 and 2022. Articles were analyzed by title, authorship, institution, journal, year, citation frequency, originating country, funding, citation index, Altmetric score, impact factor, Eigenfactor score, and article influence score. RESULTS Since January 2023, the top 100 articles had 9,096 total citations, ranging from 47 to 304. The top cited publication was "Mohs surgery is the treatment of choice for recurrent (previously treated) basal-cell carcinoma" in 1989. The top contributing organization was Harvard University (17%) and top contributing authors were Brodland, DJ (12%) and Zitelli, JA (11%). The year 2005 accounted for most of the articles (12%). Most articles were from the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (32%) and Dermatologic Surgery (27%). The United States contributed to 76% of the top articles. CONCLUSION This bibliometric analysis offers researchers a detailed overview of important MMS publications and provides useful data into current findings steering MMS research and practice.

Top 100 most cited papers on medicinal plants research. Int J Health Sci (Qassim) 2022. Abstract
Background: The idea of the paper is to identify trends and examine the characteristics of the top 100 cited papers on medicinal plants research. Methods: Web of Science citation database was queried to identify the citations of the top 100 most cited papers on medicinal plants research. R and Excel statistical software were employed to extract bibliographic data on various parameters such as number of authors, publication year, journal name, country of origin, research collaboration, trend of research etc. The top 100 cited papers were extracted for further statistical and visual analysed on various grounds. Results: 100 top-cited articles were identified where these papers published in 51 journals, led by Journal of Ethnopharmacology (36 papers) and other journals. All most cited papers were published during 1993 to 2020. The common areas of study were categorized as radical scavenging activities of medicinal plants, antioxidant behaviour of medicinal plants, antiviral and anti-bacterial application, use of medicinal plants in diagnosis and treatment of various diseases such diabetes and cancer etc. India and China emerged as leading nations performing medicinal plants research and greater author’s collaboration were witnessed in medicinal plants research with an overall collaboration index of 4.39.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bibliometric studies provide a quantitative statistical analysis of the published literature within a field of interest and allow for easy identification of the major contributing authors, funding sources, and publication trends within the field. To date, no bibliometric studies have been performed pertaining to Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). OBJECTIVE To identify the 100 most frequently cited articles in MCC through a bibliometric analysis of the literature. METHODS Web of science was queried to determine the 100 most frequently cited MCC publications published between the years 1970 and 2019. Articles were listed by title, authors and their affiliated institutions, journal title and type, year of publication, country of origin, funding sources, and citation frequency. RESULTS Among the 100 most frequently cited MCC publications, articles were cited between 67 and 589 times with a mean of 136.3 times. Articles were cited between 2.0 and 98.2 times per year since publication with a mean of 11.3 times per year. 67% of the articles were published in oncology journals; 33% and 10% of the articles in dermatology and surgery journals, respectively. The most represented journal was Cancer (12%). Paul Nghiem was the most frequently identified author (18%). 36% of the top 100 articles were published out of the University of Washington. The most frequent funding agency was the National Institutes of Health (77%). CONCLUSION Through this bibliometric analysis, researchers can easily identify key publications pertaining to MCC, which may in turn enhance their approach to understanding and practicing evidence-based medicine regarding MCC.

Abstract
This study aims to study the publication trends in articular cartilage repair (ACR) techniques, over the last 10 years. A literature search was performed on the PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases. We used suitable keywords and Boolean operators (articular cartilage injury AND "marrow stimulation OR microfracture (MFx)," "osteochondral autograft," "osteochondral allograft" and "autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI)," "scaffold"), on January 1, 2019. Trends in publication on these topics were analyzed, focusing on publications over the last 10 years, type of research, authors, institution, and country. There was an increasing trend in publications related to ACR. A search on PubMed revealed 698, 225, 293, 857, and 982 documents on searching for "articular cartilage" AND "marrow stimulation OR microfracture," "osteochondral autograft," "osteochondral allograft," "ACI," and "scaffold," respectively. Similar searches revealed 1154, 219, 330, 1727, and 2742 documents on Web of science and 934, 301, 383, 944, and 2026 on SCOPUS, respectively, in the same order of topics. Overall, most papers were published from the United States and European countries, and Cole BJ was the most published author. There was an increasing trend in the number of publications as well as citations, with international collaboration among researchers. It implies that this field is growing rapidly. The authors from globally recognized and leading clinical institutions in the developed world contributed maximally to these publications. Most of these papers were published in high-impact arthroscopy subspecialty journals. Level of evidence: Level IV.

Abstract
A bibliometric analysis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) content from a total of 15.020 research publications was conducted between 2008 and 2018, the papers being detailed in the online version of SCI-Expanded, Thomson Reuters Web of Science. Data processing tools such as Hitscite, CiteSpace, ArcGIS and Ucinet 6 were used to process the information. The parameters analyzed in the analysis were: type of document; the language of publication; volume and characteristics of publication output; publication by journals; performance of countries and research institutions; research trends and visibility. The study showed that "Fuel'', "Cell", "Membrane "and "Proton" were found in most of the titles of the documents, while "Performance", "Pemfc", "Pem Fuel Cell" and "Fuel Cell" were the keywords most commonly used in documents. The analysis found that PEMFC studies have tended to be growing and that leading peer-reviewed journals have produced numerous publications on the subject. The investigation revealed that the country with the most significant production in the field is USA with a contribution of 3009; 20% of the total publications. Followed by China 2480; 16.5%, South Korea 1273; 8.5% and Germany 1121; 7.5%, showing to the main world powers as the most significant contributors to the research.

Abstract
Joint replacement surgery is becoming increasingly popular globally and recently,in India. The phenomenon of medical tourism has also contributed to increasing number of arthroplasty surgeries being done every year in our country. The surgeons who work in this highly specialized field of orthopedic surgery, have been publishing their research work in reputed journals. In this paper, we have discussed the most cited Indian papers in the field of arthroplasty. It was observed that publications in high impact and reputed journals attract more citations and therefore it is recommended that the 'good' scientific research work should preferably be submitted to these journals to create greater impact and awareness about ones' research.

Abstract
The interest in the field of arthroscopy is increasing globally and exponentially in the recent past, including in India. Clinicians interested in this area of super specialization have started publishing their research work in reputed journals in this field. The publication from Indian authors is contributed equally by both the teaching government institutions and nonteaching private hospital specialists. The contributions by the Indian teaching institutes have predominantly Indian authors only, whereas those from the private sectors usually have an association with the foreign authors in their research and publications. The publications with higher hierarchy and level of evidence (1 and 2) are associated with greater citations. In addition, the publications in high-impact, reputed journals attract more citations and therefore it is recommended that the "good" scientific research work should preferably be submitted to these journals to create greater impact and awareness about ones' research and publication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Article citations are a well-accepted method of evaluating the influence or impact of a particular article. Other medical specialties have published the top cited articles in their specialty. To date, an analysis of the foot and ankle podiatric medicine-related article citation method has not been published. METHODS Three citation indices were used on October 10, 2014, February 20, 2015, and May 1, 2015, to determine the top 100 cited foot and ankle-related articles. RESULTS Most of the top 100 cited foot and ankle podiatric medicine-related articles were published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery by medical doctors in the United States in the past two decades, with most of the article topics being the diabetic foot or trauma. The predominant level of evidence for the articles is evenly distributed among levels III, IV, and V. CONCLUSIONS Podiatric medical research and publication has made great strides during the past two decades, particularly in the diabetic foot, but continued research and peer-reviewed journal publication in additional areas regarding the foot and ankle must become a priority in the podiatric medical community.

Abstract
Craniofacial surgery (CFS) has a rich history of collaboration with a wide variety of surgical and nonsurgical specialties. This has resulted in a large volume of publications across this spectrum of subspecialties cataloging the advancements across the field. The authors aim to analyze the characteristics of the most cited articles in CFS. A literature search was performed using the Thomson/Reuters Web of Knowledge database to identify the top 50 most cited articles in CFS. The articles were analyzed for journal distribution, total citations, year of publication, citations per year, number of authors, type of article, institution, departmental affiliation, national affiliation, and top contributors. The articles were extracted from an assortment of 21 journals. The number of citations per article ranged from 115 to 1092 (average of 185). Forty-eight percent of articles were published in the 1990s, and 22% in the 2000s. The average number of years since publication until the present time was 21.34 (range 6-45 y). The most cited article (1092 citations and 52 citations/y) was an article by McCarthy et al on human mandible lengthening via gradual distraction. Departmental distribution indicated that the majority were attributable to departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for 21 articles (42%). Twenty articles were categorized under cranial defect/bone substitutes, 12 under craniosynostosis, 7 under surgical modeling, 6 under distraction osteogenesis, and the remaining 5 under other. These articles qualitatively represent important milestones in CFS. This study affirms the potential value of "number of citations" as a meaningful metric when assessing the importance of an article within CFS.

Abstract
Purpose
– This study aims to examine publication characteristics and development of a science journal Journal of Membrane Science (JMS) with 35 years

history by bibliometric indicators.
Design/methodology/approach
– A bibliometric approach was used to identify its document types, impact factor, publication outputs, most cited articles and large contributing countries/territories and institutions. The main indicators included impact factor, CPP (citations per publication), TC2010 (number of citations from one paper’s publication to the end of 2010), C2010 (number of citations in the year of 2010), number of total articles, “single country articles” and “single institution articles”, “internationally collaborative articles” and “inter-institutionally collaborative articles”, “first author articles” and “corresponding author articles”. The annual citations of most cited articles were displayed in a table list.
Findings
– The two-year citation window used by impact factor is not fair for a journal which had its peak annual citations in the third or more years. JMS would get a better citation performance if impact factor can be calculated for three or four years. Impact factor is affected by the size of its subject categories. JMS showed higher impact factor rankings in both chemical engineering and polymer science category in the early twenty-first century. Furthermore, the G8 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the USA) contributed more than a half of the total, with higher CPP. National University of Singapore, University of Twente and Chinese Academy of Sciences were the main contributing institutions. The citation life cycles revealed the impact history of most cited articles.
Originality/value
– A bibliometric analysis has been carried out to analyze the characteristics of a journal with 35 years
'
history. Some improved indicators including TC2010, C2010, TP, SP, CP, FP and RP have been used for the evaluation. This study provides an evidence from JMS to discuss the feasibility and limitations of impact factor.

Abstract
AIM: To determine the most cited articles and most published authors in Spine Journal from 1990-2009.
METHODS: Spine Journal, established in 1976, is affiliated with 12 spine societies and a leader in spine research articles. Citation analysis is a method to determine the impact of a journal and its articles on academia and clinical practice. Using the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge, we determined the most cited articles in Spine Journal between1990-2009. The characteristics and type of article were recorded. Next, we evaluated the most published authors during the same time period and calculated the number of citations for each author. The number of first authorships for each of these authors was also determined along with the number of citations for those articles.
RESULTS: The top 20 cited articles range from 491 to 267 total citations. The top 20 published authors had between 41 and 135 articles. Seventeen of the top 20 articles were clinical studies. The range of citations per lead authorship ratio was 36 to 724 with one author having no lead authorships. Low back pain was the most common theme encountered in the top cited articles. The first-ranked article was not a spine-specific topic rather it was regarding general physical and mental health status survey update review.
CONCLUSION: Spine Journal and its authors have a clear impact on the scientific community based on this review of the top articles and authors in the last 20 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The number of citations an article receives after its publication reflects its impact in the scientific community. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 top-cited articles published in radiology journals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The top-cited articles published in 12 radiology journals were identified using the database of Science Citation Index Expanded (1945-2012). The 100 top-cited articles were selected and analyzed with regard to the number of citations, year of publication, publishing journal, authorship, institution and country of origin, type of article, radiologic subspecialty, main topic, and radiologic technique. RESULTS The 100 top-cited articles were published in eight radiology journals, led by Radiology (n=67) and followed by the American Journal of Roentgenology (n=11). These articles were published between 1939 and 2006 with a mean of 664.3 citations per article (range, 371-6931). Seventy-eight articles were published after 1979, 57 originated from the United States, and 69 were original articles. The most common subspecialties of study were interventional radiology (n=19), neuroradiology (n=15), and breast imaging (n=11). The main topics of articles were radiofrequency ablation of hepatic tumors (n=9), followed by receiver operating characteristic curves (n=6). CONCLUSION Our study presents a detailed list and analysis of the 100 top-cited articles published in radiology journals, which provides insight into historical developments in the field of radiology.

Abstract
Research has tremendously contributed to the developments in both practical and fundamental aspects of limb prosthetics. These advancements are reflected in scientific articles, particularly in the most cited papers. This article aimed to identify the 100 top-cited articles in the field of limb prosthetics and to investigate their main characteristics. Articles related to the field of limb prosthetics and published in the Web of Knowledge database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) from the period of 1980 to 2012. The 100 most cited articles in limb prosthetics were selected based on the citation index report. All types of articles except for proceedings and letters were included in the study. The study design and level of evidence were determined using Sackett's initial rules of evidence. The level of evidence was categorized either as a systematic review or meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial, cohort study, case-control study, case series, expert opinion, or design and development. The top cited articles in prosthetics were published from 1980 to 2012 with a citation range of 11 to 90 times since publication. The mean citation rate was 24.43 (SD 16.7) times. Eighty-four percent of the articles were original publications and were most commonly prospective (76%) and case series studies (67%) that used human subjects (96%) providing level 4 evidence. Among the various fields, rehabilitation (47%), orthopedics (29%), and sport sciences (28%) were the most common fields of study. The study established that studies conducted in North America and were written in English had the highest citations. Top cited articles primarily dealt with lower limb prosthetics, specifically, on transtibial and transradial prosthetic limbs. Majority of the articles were experimental studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Citation analysis within specific journals and subject areas has become a popular method to assess the impact of a journal, article or author. To date, only a few evaluations of citation reports have been published in the field of pediatric surgery. Twenty-six years after its inception, Pediatric Surgery International (PSI) is a firmly established journal in pediatric surgery. The aim of this study was to identify, analyze and categorize the characteristics of the 100 most-cited articles published in PSI since its founding in 1986. METHODS The Web of Knowledge(SM), hosted by the Institute for Scientific Information, was searched with the all-database function for the 100 most-cited articles in PSI published from 1986 to the present. Each article was reviewed and the following parameters were recorded: number of citations, type of article, topic, year of publication, country of origin, institution and authorship. RESULTS Between 1986 and 2012, 4,907 articles were published in PSI and 3,608 (73.53 %) of these were cited at least once. The 100 most-cited articles received a total of 3,309 citations with a mean of 33.09 (range 24-81). These articles were published between 1987 and 2007, with 73 articles published after 1997. Leading countries were USA (n = 15), Australia (n = 12), UK (n = 9) and Ireland (n = 9). Articles were categorized as followed: 92 original articles, 5 reviews and 3 case reports. 84 articles derived from clinical research and 16 derived from basic science. The most prolific authors were from 7 different institutions and published 37 articles, which received 1,213 (36.66 %) citations. CONCLUSION The 100 most-cited articles published in PSI were predominately original articles from English-speaking countries dealing with clinical topics. This analysis may be of value to the editorial board and authors by providing some insights into what types of manuscripts appear to be of interest to the reading audience of PSI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citation analysis reflects the recognition a work has received in the scientific community by its peers, and is a common method to determine 'classic' works in medical specialties. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES We determined which published articles in orthopaedic journals have been most cited by other authors by ranking the 100 top-cited works. By analyzing characteristics of these articles, we intended to determine what qualities make an orthopaedic article important to the specialty. Finally, we determined if there was a change in level of evidence of studies on this list with time. METHODS Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for citations to articles published in any of the 49 journals in the subject category "ORTHOPEDICS." Each of the 49 journals was searched separately using the "cited reference search" to determine the 100 most often cited articles. Each article was reviewed for basic information including year of publication, country of origin, source journal of the article, article type, and level of evidence. We categorized the journal article by field of research where possible. RESULTS The number of citations ranged from 1748 to 353. The 100 most often cited articles in orthopaedic surgery were published in 11 of the 49 journals, spanning from general to more specific subspecialty journals. The majority of the papers (76) were clinical, with the remaining representing some type of basic science research. The most common level of evidence was IV (42 of the 76 studies). Of the 76 clinical articles, 27 introduced or tested classification systems or outcome measurement tools. CONCLUSIONS Authors aiming to write a highly cited article in an orthopaedic surgery journal will be favored by language of publication, source journal, country of origin, and introduction of a classification scheme or outcome tool.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the 20 most cited articles and authors in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma during the first 20 years of publication, 1987 to 2007. DESIGN Review. METHODS We used Web of Science "cited reference search" to determine the most cited articles originating in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma from 1987 to 2007, the first 20 years of publication. The characteristics of each article were recorded. Next, we manually searched each author's citations for works in the same time period to determine the most cited authors. The number of first authorships for each author was then determined using Medline, and a relative citation impact ratio was calculated. Finally, citation reports for the journal overall were created to evaluate the citation impact of the journal over the last 10 years. RESULTS The top cited articles ranged from 64 to 566 citations with two articles over 100. Fifteen were clinical articles with the most common topic being tibia fractures (shaft, plateau, and pilon). The top cited authors ranged for 111 to 566 citations, whereas the citations per lead authorship ratio for the authors on that list ranged from 9.5 to 566 citations per lead authorship. The number of citations to the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma overall over the last 20 years has increased from 181 in 1997 to 3050 in 2007. CONCLUSIONS The influence of the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, its articles, and its authors is readily apparent in this review of the most cited articles and authors in the journal over its first 20 years of publication. This journal is a source of highly cited original articles and the work of many highly cited leaders in the field of orthopaedic trauma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citations of articles reflect their scientific relevance. The Institute for Scientific Information's impact factor measures the average number of citations to articles in a journal. Consequently, less-cited articles are credited for the impact that a few frequently cited articles had. Furthermore, the impact factor is only in regard to the citations received in the first 2 years after publication, whereas most articles may be cited only after that period. The authors tested the relevance of the impact factor as a measure of the scientific value of articles. METHODS The authors identified the 10 most-cited articles of four leading journals and calculated the pattern of their citations over the years. On the basis of the most significant change of regression coefficient in this pattern, they established the critical citable period and the number of citations received in the first 2 years as a fraction of the number of citations received during this period. RESULTS The citation distribution was skewed. The critical citable period was 16 years, in which articles gathered 61.3 percent of their total number of citations (range, 52.3 to 74.3 percent). The number of citations obtained in the first 2 years correlated well with the number of citations received in the critical citable period (Spearman rho = 0.60, p < 0.001), but only 2.5 percent of the latter number was gathered during the first 2 years (range, 1.2 to 4.0 percent). CONCLUSION The impact factor is not an adequate indicator for the scientific relevance or impact of the individual articles the authors studied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The allotment of grants is increasingly dependent on benchmarking of scientific output. Still, data to benchmark such output for plastic surgeons are lacking. Therefore, we retrieved these data for plastic surgeons in The Netherlands. METHODS We analysed the bibliographic and some biographic characteristics of all 223 plastic surgeons registered in The Netherlands from 1950 through 2004, as well as of all 61 trainee plastic surgeons. Biographic characteristics were obtained through the Netherlands Society of Plastic Surgery and bibliographic characteristics were retrieved from PubMed and the Science Citation Index. With these data, we established a trend of publications at various moments in the careers of plastic surgeons. RESULTS The age at graduation from medical school (27 years) and at the defence of PhD before registration (32 years) did not differ between specialists and residents. Eighteen residents (0.30) had already obtained a PhD, compared to the 34 specialists (0.15) who obtained their PhD prior to registration. Specialists made 2396 contributions to 1758 PubMed-indexed articles and residents made 327 contributions to 323 articles. Sixty percent of the specialists had published by the time of registration, whereas 79% of the current residents had already done so. The resident-authors had contributed to more articles (mean 6.8) than their predecessors had done at the moment of their registration (mean 4.7). Surgeons and residents published the greater part of their work in plastic surgery journals with relatively high impact factors. Sixty percent of the articles by residents and 45% of the articles by specialists had been cited by others, and articles by residents obtained a mean of 3.8 citations as compared to 4.3 citations to articles by specialist. Most specialists published until six years after registration. CONCLUSIONS The quantity and quality of publications by plastic surgeons and residents from The Netherlands increased over the studied 55-year period. Most specialists published from the moment of their graduation at medical school until six years after their registration as plastic surgeon. The residents of 2004 published more and better than their predecessors.

Abstract
Snake venoms are relevant sources of toxins that have evolved towards the engineering of highly active compounds. In the last years, research efforts have produced great advance in their understanding and uses. Metalloproteases with disintegrin domains are among the most abundant toxins in many Viperidae snake venoms. This review will focus on the structure, function and possible applications of the metalloprotease and disintegrin domains.
