Applications in analytical chemistry using the attractive properties of non-ionic fluorosurfactants

Properties of some nonionic fluorocarbon surfactants and their mixtures with hydrocarbon ones

The adsorption of Zonyl FSN-100 (FSN100, having an average 14 oxyethylene units and 6 -CF₂ groups) and Zonyl FSO-100 (FSO100, having an average 10 oxyethylene units and 5 -CF₂ groups) as well as of their mixtures with p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxypoly(ethylene glycols) having 10, 16 and 8 oxyethylene groups in molecule (TX100, TX165, TX114) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at the solution-air and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-solution and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-solution interfaces as well as the composition of the surface mixed layer was discussed based on the literature data. The adsorption properties of nonionic fluorocarbon surfactants were compared to those of the classical ones on the basis of the Gibbs standard free energy of adsorption determined by different ways and the intermolecular interactions of the surfactant molecules through the water phase. The synergetic effect in the reduction of the water surface tension by the mixture of fluorocarbon and classical nonionic surfactant was shown and explained by the comparison of the composition of the mixed surface layer to those in the bulk phase. The composition of the mixed fluorocarbon and classical surfactant layer at the solution-air interface was compared to that formed at the PTFE-solution and PMMA-solution interfaces. The changes of the surface tension of the aqueous solution of the fluorocarbon surfactants and their mixtures with classical hydrocarbon ones and their adsorption were analyzed taking into account the PTFE and PMMA surface wettability. This analysis was also based on the components and parameters of the head and tail of the surfactants surface tension as well as those of PTFE and PMMA. Apart from adsorption and wetting properties the aggregation of the fluorocarbon surfactants and their mixtures was discussed. A specific attention was paid to the possibility of two CMC values in the case of nonionic fluorocarbon surfactants as well as the synergism in CMC of mixtures of nonionic fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants.

Electrochemistry Study of Permselectivity and Interfacial Electron Transfers of a Branch-Tailed Fluorosurfactant Self-Assembled Monolayer on Gold

We investigated the permselectivity and interfacial electron transfers of an amphiphilic branch-tailed fluorosurfactant self-assembled monolayer (FS-SAM) on a gold electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The FS-SAM was prepared by a self-assembly technique and a "click" reaction. The barrier property and interfacial electron transfers of the FS-SAM were also evaluated using various probes with different features. The FS-SAM allowed a higher degree of permeation by small hydrophilic (Cl^- and F^-) electrolyte ions than large hydrophobic (ClO₄^- and PF₆^-) ones. Meanwhile, the redox reaction of the Fe(CN)₆^3- couple was nearly completely blocked by the FS-SAM, whereas the electron transfer of Ru(NH₃)₆³⁺ was easier than that of Fe(CN)₆^3-, which may be due to the underlying tunneling mechanism. For hydrophobic dopamine, the hydrophobic bonding between the FS-SAM exterior fluoroalkyl moieties and the hydrophobic probes, as well as the hydration resistance from the interior hydration shell around the oligo (ethylene glycol) moieties, hindered the transport of hydrophobic probes into the FS-SAM. These results may have profound implications for understanding the permselectivity and electron transfers of amphiphilic surfaces consisting of molecules containing aromatic groups and branch-tailed fluorosurfactants in their structures.

FeCo nanoparticles-embedded carbon nanofibers as robust peroxidase mimics for sensitive colorimetric detection of l-cysteine

A simple and low cost detection of l-cysteine is essential in the fields of biosensors and medical diagnosis. In this study, we have developed a simple electrospinning, followed by calcination process to prepare FeCo nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers (FeCo-CNFs) as an efficient peroxidase-like mimic for the detection of l-cysteine. FeCo nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed within CNFs, and their diameters are highly influenced by the calcination temperature. The calcination temperature also influences the peroxidase-like catalytic activity, and the maximum activity is achieved at a calcination temperature of 550 °C. Owing to the high catalytic activity of the as-prepared FeCo-CNFs, a colorimetric technique for the rapid and accurate determination of l-cysteine has been developed. The detection limit is about 0.15 μM with a wide linear range from 1 to 20 μM. In addition, a high selectivity for the detection of l-cysteine over other amino acids, glucose and common ions is achieved. This study provides a simple, rapid and sensitive sensing platform for the detection of l-cysteine, which is a promising candidate for potential applications in biosensing, medicine, environmental monitoring.

A new approach for bisphenol A detection employing fluorosurfactant-capped gold nanoparticle-amplified chemiluminescence from cobalt(II) and peroxymonocarbonate

In this work, we utilized the nonionic fluorosurfactant-capped gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as a novel chemiluminescence (CL) probe for the determination of trace bisphenol A. Bisphenol A can induce a sharp decrease in CL intensity from the GNP-Co(2+)-peroxymonocarbonate (HCO4(-)) system. Under the selected experimental conditions, a linear relationship was obtained between the CL intensity and the logarithm of concentration of bisphenol A in the range of 0.05-50 μM (R(2) = 0.9936), and the detection limit at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 for bisphenol A was 10 nM. The applicability of the proposed method has been validated by determining bisphenol A in real polycarbonate samples with satisfactory results. The recoveries for bisphenol A in spiked samples were found to be between 94.4% and 105.0%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 12 repeated measurements of 0.5 μM bisphenol A was 2.2%. The proposed method described herein was simple, selective and obviated the need of extensive sample pretreatment.
