Advancing cancer treatments: The role of oligonucleotide-based therapies in driving progress

Although recent advancements in cancer immunology have resulted in the approval of numerous immunotherapies, minimal progress has been observed in addressing hard-to-treat cancers. In this context, therapeutic oligonucleotides, including interfering RNAs, antisense oligonucleotides, aptamers, and DNAzymes, have gained a central role in cancer therapeutic approaches due to their capacity to regulate gene expression and protein function with reduced toxicity compared with conventional chemotherapeutics. Nevertheless, systemic administration of naked oligonucleotides faces many extra- and intracellular challenges that can be overcome by using effective delivery systems. Thus, viral and non-viral carriers can improve oligonucleotide stability and intracellular uptake, enhance tumor accumulation, and increase the probability of endosomal escape while minimizing other adverse effects. Therefore, gaining more insight into fundamental mechanisms of actions of various oligonucleotides and the challenges posed by naked oligonucleotide administration, this article provides a comprehensive review of the recent progress on oligonucleotide delivery systems and an overview of completed and ongoing cancer clinical trials that can shape future oncological treatments.

A Review of Recent Developments in Biopolymer Nano-Based Drug Delivery Systems with Antioxidative Properties: Insights into the Last Five Years

In recent years, biopolymer-based nano-drug delivery systems with antioxidative properties have gained significant attention in the field of pharmaceutical research. These systems offer promising strategies for targeted and controlled drug delivery while also providing antioxidant effects that can mitigate oxidative stress-related diseases. Generally, the healthcare landscape is constantly evolving, necessitating the continual development of innovative therapeutic approaches and drug delivery systems (DDSs). DDSs play a pivotal role in enhancing treatment efficacy, minimizing adverse effects, and optimizing patient compliance. Among these, nanotechnology-driven delivery approaches have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties, such as improved solubility, controlled release, and targeted delivery. Nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanotubes, etc., offer versatile platforms for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Additionally, biopolymer-based DDSs hold immense promise, leveraging natural or synthetic biopolymers to encapsulate drugs and enable targeted and controlled release. These systems offer numerous advantages, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. The utilization of polysaccharides, polynucleotides, proteins, and polyesters as biopolymer matrices further enhances the versatility and applicability of DDSs. Moreover, substances with antioxidative properties have emerged as key players in combating oxidative stress-related diseases, offering protection against cellular damage and chronic illnesses. The development of biopolymer-based nanoformulations with antioxidative properties represents a burgeoning research area, with a substantial increase in publications in recent years. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments within this area over the past five years. It discusses various biopolymer materials, fabrication techniques, stabilizers, factors influencing degradation, and drug release. Additionally, it highlights emerging trends, challenges, and prospects in this rapidly evolving field.

Approaches for reducing chemo/radiation-induced cardiotoxicity by nanoparticles

Nanoparticles are fascinating and encouraging carriers for cancer treatment due to their extraordinary properties and potential applications in targeted drug delivery, treatment, and diagnosis. Experimental studies including in vitro and in vivo examinations show that nanoparticles can cause a revolution in different aspects of cancer therapy. Normal tissue toxicity and early and late consequences are the major limitations of cancer therapy by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, the delivery of drugs into tumors or reducing the accumulation of drugs in normal tissues can permit a more satisfactory response of malignancies to therapy with more inferior side effects. Cardiac toxicity is one of the major problems for chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Therefore, several experimental studies have been performed to minimize the degenerative impacts of cancer treatment on the heart and also enhance the influences of radiotherapy and chemotherapy agents in cancers. This review article emphasizes the benefits of nanoparticle-based drug delivery techniques, including minimizing the exposure of the heart to anticancer drugs, enhancing the accumulation of drugs in cancers, and expanding the effectiveness of radiotherapy. The article also discusses the challenges and problems accompanied with nanoparticle-based drug delivery techniques such as toxicity, which need to be addressed through further research. Moreover, the article emphasizes the importance of developing safe and effective nanoparticle-based therapies that can be translated into clinical practice.

Aptamer-Based Smart Targeting and Spatial Trigger-Response Drug-Delivery Systems for Anticancer Therapy

In recent years, the field of drug delivery has witnessed remarkable progress, driven by the quest for more effective and precise therapeutic interventions. Among the myriad strategies employed, the integration of aptamers as targeting moieties and stimuli-responsive systems has emerged as a promising avenue, particularly in the context of anticancer therapy. This review explores cutting-edge advancements in targeted drug-delivery systems, focusing on the integration of aptamers and stimuli-responsive platforms for enhanced spatial anticancer therapy. In the aptamer-based drug-delivery systems, we delve into the versatile applications of aptamers, examining their conjugation with gold, silica, and carbon materials. The synergistic interplay between aptamers and these materials is discussed, emphasizing their potential in achieving precise and targeted drug delivery. Additionally, we explore stimuli-responsive drug-delivery systems with an emphasis on spatial anticancer therapy. Tumor microenvironment-responsive nanoparticles are elucidated, and their capacity to exploit the dynamic conditions within cancerous tissues for controlled drug release is detailed. External stimuli-responsive strategies, including ultrasound-mediated, photo-responsive, and magnetic-guided drug-delivery systems, are examined for their role in achieving synergistic anticancer effects. This review integrates diverse approaches in the quest for precision medicine, showcasing the potential of aptamers and stimuli-responsive systems to revolutionize drug-delivery strategies for enhanced anticancer therapy.

A novel target-triggered signal chemiluminescence kit for thrombin detection based on fusiform Au/MIL-53(Fe)

In this work, a fusiform Au/MIL-53(Fe) catalyst was used to construct a chemiluminescence (CL) kit for the sensitive and rapid detection of thrombin (THR). The porous silica microspheres encapsulated with luminol in holes by thrombin aptamer (THR-APT/Luminol/SPSiO2) and the fusiform Au/MIL-53(Fe) modified with thrombin aptamer complementary chains (Au/MIL-53(Fe)-SSDNA) were prepared. Then, a CL kit for THR detection was constructed by using the prepared composites. When thrombin is added to the reaction system, it binds to its aptamer (THR-APT) to open the holes of SPSiO2, which cause luminol and Au/MIL-53(Fe) release. Released luminol enters the detection system and triggers the reaction of luminol-H2O2-NaOH with the catalyst of Au/MIL-53(Fe), and produces a CL signal. The detection limit and the linear range of the kit were 4.7 × 10-15 M and 1.5 × 10-14 - 3.5 × 10-10 M, respectively. The CL kit also showed high stability, selectivity and reproducibility, and was successfully applied to the determination of THR in serum samples. Therefore, the proposed method for detecting THR has great application potential in the diagnosis of blood-related disease markers.

A comprehensive review on nanocomposite biomaterials based on gelatin for bone tissue engineering

The creation of a suitable scaffold is a crucial step in the process of bone tissue engineering (BTE). The scaffold, acting as an artificial extracellular matrix, plays a significant role in determining the fate of cells by affecting their proliferation and differentiation in BTE. Therefore, careful consideration should be given to the fabrication approach and materials used for scaffold preparation. Natural polypeptides such as gelatin and collagen have been widely used for this purpose. The unique properties of nanoparticles, which vary depending on their size, charge, and physicochemical properties, have demonstrated potential in solving various challenges encountered in BTE. Therefore, nanocomposite biomaterials consisting of polymers and nanoparticles have been extensively used for BTE. Gelatin has also been utilized in combination with other nanomaterials to apply for this purpose. Composites of gelatin with various types of nanoparticles are particularly promising for creating scaffolds with superior biological and physicochemical properties. This review explores the use of nanocomposite biomaterials based on gelatin and various types of nanoparticles together for applications in bone tissue engineering.

Aptamer-modified chitosan-capped mesoporous silica nanoparticles for co-delivery of cytarabine and daunorubicin in leukemia

In this study, surface modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared for the targeted delivery of the anticancer agents, daunorubicin (DNR) and cytarabine (CTR), against K562 leukemia cancer cell lines. The MSNs were surface-modified with pH-sensitive chitosan (CS) to prevent the burst release of anticancer agents at the physiological pH of 7.4 and to enable a higher drug release at lower pH and higher concentration of glutathione. Finally, the MSNs were surface modified with KK1B10 aptamer (Apt) to enhance their uptake by K562 cells through ligand-receptor interactions. The MSNs were characterized using different methods and both in vitro and in vivo experiments were utilized to demonstrate their suitability as targeted anticancer agents. The resultant MSNs exhibited an average particle size of 295 nm, a surface area of 39.06 m2/g, and a cumulative pore volume of 0.09 cm3/g. Surface modification of MSNs with chitosan (CS) resulted in a more regulated and acceptable continuous release rate of DNR. The drug release rate was significantly higher at pH 5 media enriched with glutathione, compared to pH 7.4. Furthermore, MSNs coated with CS and conjugated with aptamer (MSN-DNR + CTR@CS-Apt) exhibited a lower IC50 value of 2.34 µg/ml, compared to MSNs without aptamer conjugation, which displayed an IC50 value of 12.27 µg/ml. The results of the cell cycle analysis indicated that the administration of MSN-DNR + CTR@CS-Apt led to a significant increase in the population of apoptotic cells in the sub-G1 phase. Additionally, the treatment arrested the remaining cells in various other phases of the cell cycle. Furthermore, the interactions between Apt-receptors were found to enhance the uptake of MSNs by cancer cells. The results of in vivo studies demonstrated that the administration of MSN-DNR + CTR@CS-Apt led to a significant reduction in the expression levels of CD71 and CD235a markers, as compared to MSN-DNR + CTR@CS (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the surface modified MSNs prepared in this study showed lower IC50 against cancer cell lines and higher anticancer activity in animal models.

Aptamers and nanobodies as alternatives to antibodies for ligand-targeted drug delivery in cancer

Targeted drug delivery (TDD) is the selective delivery of a therapeutic agent specifically to the site of action to avoid adverse effects and systemic toxicity and to reduce the dose required. Ligand TDD or active TDD involves using a ligand-drug conjugate comprising a targeting ligand linked to an active drug moiety that can either be free or encapsulated within a nanocarrier (NC). Aptamers are single-stranded oligonucleotides that bind to specific biomacromolecules because of their 3D conformation. Nanobodies are the variable domains of unique heavy chain-only antibodies (HcAbs) produced by animals of the Camelidae family. Both these types of ligand are smaller than antibodies and have been used to efficiently target drugs to particular tissues or cells. In this review, we describe the applications of aptamers and nanobodies as ligands for TDD, their advantages and disadvantages compared with antibodies, and the various modalities for targeting cancers using these ligands. Aptamers in cancer therapy: problems and new breakthroughs

Aptamers, a class of oligonucleotides that can bind with molecular targets with high affinity and specificity, have been widely applied in research fields including biosensing, imaging, diagnosing, and therapy of diseases. However, compared with the rapid development in the research fields, the clinical application of aptamers is progressing at a much slower speed, especially in the therapy of cancer. Obstructions including nuclease degradation, renal clearance, a complex selection process, and potential side effects have inhibited the clinical transformation of aptamer-conjugated drugs. To overcome these problems, taking certain measures to improve the biocompatibility and stability of aptamer-conjugated drugs in vivo is necessary. In this review, the obstructions mentioned above are thoroughly discussed and the methods to overcome these problems are introduced in detail. Furthermore, landmark research works and the most recent studies on aptamer-conjugated drugs for cancer therapy are also listed as examples, and the future directions of research for aptamer clinical transformation are discussed.

Development of Janus Particles as Potential Drug Delivery Systems for Diabetes Treatment and Antimicrobial Applications

Janus particles have emerged as a novel and smart material that could improve pharmaceutical formulation, drug delivery, and theranostics. Janus particles have two distinct compartments that differ in functionality, physicochemical properties, and morphological characteristics, among other conventional particles. Recently, Janus particles have attracted considerable attention as effective particulate drug delivery systems as they can accommodate two opposing pharmaceutical agents that can be engineered at the molecular level to achieve better target affinity, lower drug dosage to achieve a therapeutic effect, and controlled drug release with improved pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. This article discusses the development of Janus particles for tailored and improved delivery of pharmaceutical agents for diabetes treatment and antimicrobial applications. It provides an account of advances in the synthesis of Janus particles from various materials using different approaches. It appraises Janus particles as a promising particulate system with the potential to improve conventional delivery systems, providing a better loading capacity and targeting specificity whilst promoting multi-drugs loading and single-dose-drug administration.

Aptamer Selection Based on Microscale Electrophoretic Filtration Using a Hydrogel-Plugged Capillary Device

This study reports a novel aptamer selection method based on microscale electrophoretic filtration. Aptamers are versatile materials that recognize specific targets and are attractive for their applications in biosensors, diagnosis, and therapy. However, their practical applications remain scarce due to issues with conventional selection methods, such as complicated operations, low-efficiency separation, and expensive apparatus. To overcome these drawbacks, a selection method based on microscale electrophoretic filtration using a capillary partially filled with hydrogel was developed. The electrophoretic filtration of model target proteins (immunoglobulin E (IgE)) using hydrogel, the electrokinetic injection of DNAs to interact with the trapped proteins, the elimination of DNAs with weak interactions, and the selective acquisition of aptamer candidates with strong interactions were successfully demonstrated, revealing the validity of the proposed concept. Two aptamer candidates for IgE were obtained after three selection cycles, and their affinity for the target was confirmed to be less than 1 nM based on their dissociation constant (K_D) values. Therefore, the proposed method allows for the selection of aptamers with simple operations, highly effective separation based on electrophoresis and filtration, and a relatively cheap apparatus with disposable devices.

Recent advances in aptamer-based targeted drug delivery systems for cancer therapy

The past decade has become an important strategy in precision medicine for the targeted therapy of many diseases, expecially various types of cancer. As a promising targeted element, nucleic acid aptamers are single-stranded functional oligonucleotides which have specific abilities to bind with various target molecules ranging from small molecules to entire organisms. They are often named ‘chemical antibody’ and have aroused extensive interest in diverse clinical studies on account of their advantages, such as considerable biostability, versatile chemical modification, low immunogenicity and quick tissue penetration. Thus, aptamer-embedded drug delivery systems offer an unprecedented opportunity in bioanalysis and biomedicine. In this short review, we endeavor to discuss the recent advances in aptamer-based targeted drug delivery platforms for cancer therapy. Some perspectives on the advantages, challenges and opportunities are also presented.

Imaging Intracellular Drug/siRNA Co-Delivery by Self-Assembly Cross-Linked Polyethylenimine with Fluorescent Core-Shell Silica Nanoparticles

Multifunctional theranostic nanomaterial represents one type of emerging agent with the potential to offer both sensitive diagnosis and effective therapy. Herein, we report a novel drug/siRNA co-delivery nanocarrier, which is based on fluorescent mesoporous core-shell silica nanoparticles coated by cross-linked polyethylenimine. The fluorescent mesoporous core-shell silica nanoparticles can provide numerous pores for drug loading and negative charged surface to assemble cross-linked polyethylenimine via electrostatic interaction. Disulfide cross-linked polyethylenimine can be absorbed on the surface of silica nanoparticles which provide the feasibility to bind with negatively charged siRNA and release drug "on-demand". In addition, the hybrid nanoparticles can be easily internalized into cells to realize drug/siRNA co-delivery and therapeutic effect imaging. This work would stimulate interest in the use of self-assembled cross-linked polyethylenimine with fluorescent mesoporous core-shell silica nanoparticles to construct multifunctional nanocomposites for tumor therapy.

Advanced mesoporous silica nanocarriers in cancer theranostics and gene editing applications

Targeted nanomaterials for cancer theranostics have been the subject of an expanding volume of research studies in recent years. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are particularly attractive for such applications due to possibilities to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs) of different morphologies, pore diameters and pore arrangements, large surface areas and various options for surface functionalization. Functionalization of MSNs with different organic and inorganic molecules, polymers, surface-attachment of other NPs, loading and entrapping cargo molecules with on-desire release capabilities, lead to seemingly endless prospects for designing advanced nanoconstructs exerting multiple functions, such as simultaneous cancer-targeting, imaging and therapy. Describing composition and multifunctional capabilities of these advanced nanoassemblies for targeted therapy (passive, ligand-functionalized MSNs, stimuli-responsive therapy), including one or more modalities for imaging of tumors, is the subject of this review article, along with an overview of developments within a novel and attractive research trend, comprising the use of MSNs for CRISPR/Cas9 systems delivery and gene editing in cancer. Such advanced nanconstructs exhibit high potential for applications in image-guided therapies and the development of personalized cancer treatment.

Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles: Properties and Strategies for Enhancing Clinical Effect

Due to the theragnostic potential of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), these were extensively investigated as a novel approach to improve clinical outcomes. Boasting an impressive array of formulations and modifications, MSNs demonstrate significant in vivo efficacy when used to identify or treat myriad malignant diseases in preclinical models. As MSNs continue transitioning into clinical trials, a thorough understanding of the characteristics of effective MSNs is necessary. This review highlights recent discoveries and advances in MSN understanding and technology. Specific focus is given to cancer theragnostic approaches using MSNs. Characteristics of MSNs such as size, shape, and surface properties are discussed in relation to effective nanomedicine practice and projected clinical efficacy. Additionally, tumor-targeting options used with MSNs are presented with extensive discussion on active-targeting molecules. Methods for decreasing MSN toxicity, improving site-specific delivery, and controlling release of loaded molecules are further explained. Challenges facing the field and translation to clinical environments are presented alongside potential avenues for continuing investigations.

A label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on encapsulated signal molecules in mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods for ultrasensitive assay of procalcitonin

For immobilization and signal amplification of the probes, it is feasible and promising by using porous nanomaterials as nanocarriers. Herein, a novel label-free electrochemical immmunosensor was efficiently designed for ultrasensitive detection of procalcitonin (PCT). The immunosensor was prepared by using porous silica-coated gold nanorods (Au NRs@m-SiO₂) to load electroactive dye thionine (Thi) on the electrode surface. Apart from the improved electrical conductivity, the porous feature highly increased the loading amount of Thi to boost the detection signals, while the good biocompatibility and protective microenvironment are beneficial to the largely improved stability for the target. For quantification of PCT, the developed immunosensor exhibited a good linear relationship in the antigen concentration range of 0.001-100 ng mL^-1 with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD, 0.39 pg mL^-1, S/N = 3). Moreover, the built platform was successfully applied to such assay in human serum samples. The research provides some valuable guidelines for clinical screening and diagnosis of other biomarkers.

Progress in Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Agents for Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment and therapy have made significant leaps and bounds in these past decades. However, there are still cases where surgical removal is impossible, metastases are challenging, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy pose severe side effects. Therefore, a need to find more effective and specific treatments still exists. One way is through the utilization of drug delivery agents (DDA) based on nanomaterials. In 2001, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were first used as DDA and have gained considerable attention in this field. The popularity of MSNs is due to their unique properties such as tunable particle and pore size, high surface area and pore volume, easy functionalization and surface modification, high stability and their capability to efficiently entrap cargo molecules. This review describes the latest advancement of MSNs as DDA for cancer treatment. We focus on the fabrication of MSNs, the challenges in DDA development and how MSNs address the problems through the development of smart DDA using MSNs. Besides that, MSNs have also been applied as a multifunctional DDA where they can serve in both the diagnostic and treatment of cancer. Overall, we argue MSNs provide a bright future for both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Multiplex bioassaying of cancer proteins and biomacromolecules: Nanotechnological, structural and technical perspectives

Since the specific proteins (carbohydrate antigens, ligands and interleukins) get raised up in body tissue or fluids in cancer cases, early detection of them will provide an effective treatment and survival rate. Sensitive and accurate determination of multiple cancer proteins can be engaged in chorus by simultaneous/multiplex detection in the biomedical fields. Bioassaying technology is one of the non-invasive, high-sensitive, and economical methods. Currently, extensive application of nanomaterial (biocompatible polymers, metallic and metal oxide) in bioassays resulted in ultra-high sensitive and selective diagnosis. This review article focuses on types of multiplex bioassays for delicate and specific determination of cancer proteins for diagnostic aims. It also covers two modes of multiplex bioassays as multi labeled bioassays and spatially-separated test zones (multi-electrode mode). In this review, the nanotechnological, structural, and technical perspectives in the multiplex analysis of cancer proteins were discussed. Finally, the use of different types of nanomaterials, polysaccharides, biopolymers and their advantages in signal amplification are discussed.

Metal-organic frameworks for virus detection

Virus severely endangers human life and health, and the detection of viruses is essential for the prevention and treatment of associated diseases. Metal-organic framework (MOF), a novel hybrid porous material which is bridged by the metal clusters and organic linkers, has become a promising biosensor platform for virus detection due to its outstanding properties including high surface area, adjustable pore size, easy modification, etc. However, the MOF-based sensing platforms for virus detection are rarely summarized. This review systematically divided the detection platforms into nucleic acid and immunological (antigen and antibody) detection, and the underlying sensing mechanisms were interpreted. The nucleic acid sensing was discussed based on the properties of MOF (such as metal ion, functional group, geometry structure, size, porosity, stability, etc.), revealing the relationship between the sensing performance and properties of MOF. Moreover, antibodies sensing based on the fluorescence detection and antigens sensing based on molecular imprinting or electrochemical immunoassay were highlighted. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future development of MOF for virus detection were further discussed and proposed. This review will provide valuable references for the construction of sophisticated sensing platform for the detection of viruses, especially the 2019 coronavirus.

MUC1 Aptamer-Capped Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Navitoclax Resistance Overcoming in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype. In the last years, navitoclax has emerged as a possible treatment for TNBC. Nevertheless, rapid navitoclax resistance onset has been observed thorough Mcl-1 overexpression. As a strategy to overcome Mcl-1-mediated resistance, herein we present a controlled drug co-delivery system based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) targeted to TNBC cells. The nanocarrier is loaded with navitoclax and the Mcl-1 inhibitor S63845 and capped with a MUC1-targeting aptamer (apMUC1-MSNs(Nav/S63845)). The apMUC1-capped nanoparticles effectively target TNBC cell lines and successfully induce apoptosis, overcoming navitoclax resistance. Moreover, navitoclax encapsulation protects platelets against apoptosis. These results point apMUC1-gated MSNs as suitable BH3 mimetics nanocarriers in the targeted treatment of MUC1-expressing TNBC.

Recent advances in the combination delivery of drug for leukemia and other cancers

Introduction: Combination therapy has been explored for its potential to reduce or eliminate multidrug resistance in treating different types of cancer including leukemia. Nutraceutical, small molecular drugs, and small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) are some of the effective drugs. In order to avoid off-site targeting, reduce the dosage required, and increase the half-life of the drug in the circulation system, drug delivery vehicles, such as nanoparticles and microfibers have been explored.Areas covered: This review summarizes various therapies utilized in treating leukemia based on their effectiveness in inducing protein inhibition and/or apoptosis. In particular, treatment effectiveness using combination therapy using various devices is addressed. Recently explored drug delivery methods are reviewed, providing examples and their applications in cancer treatment. The drug listing, delivery systems classifications, along with the general modeling approach in this review, provide, to a full extent, a basis for cancer drug delivery future studies.Expert opinion: The reviewer's opinion tackles the potential of using a multi-delivery system to deliver multiple drugs, providing better control upon drug release and targeting. Both local and systemic delivery are considered and explored for their potential targets. Researchers are advised to pre-consider all aspects associated with their desired delivery method.

Natural polypeptides-based electrically conductive biomaterials for tissue engineering

Fabrication of an appropriate scaffold is the key fundamental step required for a successful tissue engineering (TE). The artificial scaffold as extracellular matrix in TE has noticeable role in the fate of cells in terms of their attachment, proliferation, differentiation, orientation and movement. In addition, chemical and electrical stimulations affect various behaviors of cells such as polarity and functionality. Therefore, the fabrication approach and materials used for the preparation of scaffold should be more considered. Various synthetic and natural polymers have been used extensively for the preparation of scaffolds. The electrically conductive polymers (ECPs), moreover, have been used in combination with other polymers to apply electric fields (EF) during TE. In this context, composites of natural polypeptides and ECPs can be taken into account as context for the preparation of suitable scaffolds with superior biological and physicochemical features. In this review, we overviewed the simultaneous usage of natural polypeptides and ECPs for the fabrication of scaffolds in TE.
