Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the available evidence on the ultrasonographic characteristics of masticatory muscles in subjects with myogenous TMD, as well as the potential use of ultrasonography as a diagnostic and treatment assessment outcomes tool. METHOD An electronic search of the PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases was performed using the following terms: 'ultrasonography', 'ultrasound', 'masseter', 'temporal', 'masticatory muscles', 'temporomandibular disorders', 'temporomandibular joint disorders'. Full-text articles were obtained from the records after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. RESULTS Thirteen articles were included for analysis: one comparative cross-sectional study, five case-control studies, six clinical trials and one randomised clinical trial. Main ultrasonographic characteristic assessed were local cross-sectional dimension and intramuscular ultrasonographic appearance. Retrieved studies reported the use ultrasonography for diagnosis or treatment assessment purposes showing heterogeneous results. For diagnosis purposes, the results of local cross-sectional dimension are not consistent; therefore, its diagnostic value for myogenous TMD diagnosis is weak. However, more homogeneous results were observed for intramuscular ultrasonographic appearance showing a higher prevalence of type-II pattern in myogenous TMD subjects than non-TMD subjects. On the other hand, for treatment assessment purposes, muscles were observed thinner after treatment compared to pre-treatment. Also, results of intramuscular ultrasonographic appearance show disappearance or reduction of anechoic areas, higher prevalence of type-II pattern and significant distinction of echogenic bands were observed after treating TMD subjects. CONCLUSION Ultrasonography cannot be considered as a diagnostic instrument, but maybe as a complementary tool for treatment assessment of myogenous TMD subjects, even though future research is required to confirm its utility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Manual massage (MM) interventions can improve psychophysiological states of relaxation and well-being. In this context, robotic massage (RM) represents a promising, but currently understudied, solution. HYPOTHESIS Both MM and RM would improve flexibility of the hamstrings and lumbopelvic muscles and promote a psychophysiological state of relaxation through decreased sympathetic activity. STUDY DESIGN Single-blind randomized crossover trial. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 2. METHODS A total of 21 participants experienced 2 massage interventions targeting back soft tissues. During a first condition, the intervention was performed by a physical therapist, whereas during a second condition the intervention was performed by a robot. We collected objective and subjective indexes of performances and well-being before and after each massage intervention. We also collected physical therapists' self-reports of perceived fatigue, tension, and ability to maintain the massage routine. RESULTS Skin conductance decreased from the pretest to the posttest in both conditions (partial R2 = 0.44, 95% CI [0.30, 1.00], P < 0.01), although the decrease was more pronounced after MM. Whereas both interventions were associated with improved subjective sensations, eg, pain, warmth, well-being (partial R2 = 0.08, 95% CI [0.06, 1.00], P < 0.01), MM yielded additional benefits compared with RM. The physical therapist reported greater fatigue and tension and reduced perceived massage efficiency along with repeated massage interventions. MM outperformed RM to elicit a psychophysiological state of relaxation. CONCLUSION RM exhibited a pattern of changes comparable with that of MM, for both objective and subjective indexes of relaxation and well-being. CLINICAL RELEVANCE RM could represent a prophylactic option to prevent the onset of counterproductive fatigability in physical therapists.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Temporomandibular joint dysfunctions (TMDs) are complex problems affecting the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), masticatory muscles, or both. TMDs are considered muscle pain caused by contraction and ischemia in the masticatory muscles, but evaluation of the efficacy of pharmacological treatment is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the changes in masticatory muscles, joint space, and main arteries supplying the TMJs after pharmacological therapy in patients with TMDs using ultrasonography (USG). MATERIAL AND METHODS The TMJ space, masseter and temporal muscles, temporal superficial artery (TSA), and facial artery (FA) were examined using USG in 30 participants with acute TMD pain before and after 10 days of symptomatic treatment with analgesic and myorelaxant. The bilateral masseter and temporal muscle thicknesses, joint space, and end-diastolic minimum velocity (Ved), minimum end-diastolic minimum velocity (Vmin), peak systolic maximum velocity (Vmax), pulsatility index (PI), and resistance index (RI) values of the TSA and FA were measured and compared before and after pharmacological treatment. The relationship between the masseter muscle thickness and the Ved and Vmin values of the TSA and FA before and after pharmacological treatment was analyzed using the paired sample t test; the relationship between the temporal muscle thickness, TMJ spaces, and Vmax, PI, and RI values of the TSA and FA was analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α=.05). RESULTS A significant difference was found between the right temporal muscle thickness before and after medication (P=.01), whereas no statistically significant difference was found in the left temporal muscle thickness (P>.05). A significant difference was found between pretreatment and posttreatment bilateral masseter thicknesses at rest (right P=.014; left P=.004). No statistically significant difference was found in the bilateral joint space or Vmax, Vmin, Ved, PI, and RI values of the TSA and FA before and after treatment (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS Pharmacological treatment in participants with acute TMD led to a reduction in masseter and temporal muscle thickness but did not significantly affect joint space and local blood flow. USG is a useful diagnostic tool in the diagnosis and follow-up of TMDs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the possible changes in the mechanical properties of the orofacial and neck muscles in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS The study included a total of 98 females. Females were divided into three groups as myogenous TMD, mixed TMD, and healthy controls. The frequency (indicator of muscle tone), stiffness, and decrement (related to muscle elasticity) values of the sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius, cervical extensor, and masseter muscles were measured using a portable myotonometer. RESULTS The frequency, stiffness, and decrement values of the masseter muscle were higher in the mixed and myogenous TMD groups than those of the control group (p < 0.017). The mixed TMD group had higher frequency and stiffness values in the upper trapezius muscle compared with the control group (p < 0.017). DISCUSSION The results suggest that the mechanical properties of the oral and neck muscles may be affected in patients with TMD.

Abstract
Background Over the past few years, a growing number of studies have explored massage robots. However, to date, a dedicated systematic review focused solely on robot-assisted massage has not been conducted. Objective To systematically identify and summarize evidence from studies concerning robot-assisted massage in healthcare settings. Methods An extensive literature search, involving electronic databases Ovid and Scopus, was conducted from the inception of the databases up to March 2023. This systematic review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, and relevant papers were chosen based on the predefined inclusion criteria. Given the substantial methodological diversity among the included studies, a qualitative analysis was conducted. Results Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising 15 preliminary trials, one quasi-experimental study, and one randomized controlled trial. Approximately 29% of the studies focused on the application of robotic massage for patients, 24% targeted both healthy volunteers and patients, and the remaining 47% were preclinical trials assessing the effectiveness of robotic massage solely on healthy volunteers. Primary interventions included robotic massage for oral rehabilitation, scalp massage, low back massage, shoulder massage, and full-body massage. All studies provided evidence that robotic massage interventions can enhance health and well-being, indicating a promising future for the integration of robotics in the field of massage therapy. Conclusions In general, robotic massage interventions offer physical and mental health benefits. Robot-assisted massage may be integrated into care provision as an adjunct to enhance human well-being. Nonetheless, further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
The limited number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of soft tissue manual therapy and self-therapy interventions prompted the authors to focus on the analgesic and myorelaxant use of massage, post-isometric muscle relaxation (PIR) and therapeutic exercise in TMD patients. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of soft tissue therapy and therapeutic exercises in female patients with pain, increased masseter muscle tension and limited mandibular mobility. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was conducted on a group of 82 women (G1) with the Ib disorder diagnosed in DC/TMD (Ib-myofascial pain with restricted mobility). The control group (G2) consisted of 104 women without diagnosed TMDs (normal reference values for TMJ ROM and masseter muscle sEMG bioelectric activity). Diagnostic procedures were performed in both groups (sEMG of the masseter muscles at baseline and during exercise, measurement of TMJ mobility, assessment of pain intensity-NRS scale). The G1 group was randomly divided into 3 therapeutic groups in which the therapy was carried out for 10 days: therapeutic exercises (TE), manual therapy - massage and therapeutic exercises (MTM_TE), manual therapy - PIR and therapeutic exercises (MTPIR_TE). Each time after therapy, the intensity of pain and TMJ mobility were assessed. Sealed, opaque envelopes were used for randomization. After 5 and 10 days of therapy, bilateral sEMG signals of the masseter muscles were acquired. RESULTS Massage, PIR and self-therapy led to a decrease in sEMG at rest as well as in exercise. After day 6 of therapy, the groups obtained a significant difference (p = 0.0001). Each of the proposed forms of therapy showed a minimal clinically significant difference (MID) in the sEMG parameter at the endpoint, with the most considerable difference in the MTM_TE group. The forms of MT used were effective in reducing the patients' pain intensity; however, a significant difference between therapies occurred after 4 treatments (p = 0.0001). Analyzing the MID between methods, it was observed that self-therapy had an analgesic effect only after 8 treatments, while PIR after 3 and massage after 1 treatment. After day 7, the mean pain score in the MTM_TE group was 0.889 and in the TMPIR_TE group was 3.44 on the NRS scale. In terms of MMO, a significant difference was obtained between monotherapy and each form of TM, i.e. massage (p = 0.0001) and PIR (p = 0.0001). Analyzing mandibular lateral movements, the authors got a significant difference in the proposed MT forms, of which massage treatments exceeded the effectiveness of PIR. CONCLUSIONS Soft tissue manual therapy and therapeutic exercise are simple and safe interventions that can potentially benefit patients with myogenic TMDs, with massage showing better analgesic effects than PIR.

Abstract
AIMS The greater palatine artery (GPA) is one of the most important anatomical structure for free gingival grafts or connective-tissue grafts during soft tissue surgery for dental implants. Several studies have identified the approximate location of the GPA, but it is impossible to detect its exact location during surgery due to large variability between individuals. The authors, therefore, investigated the course of the GPA using intraoral ultrasonography to determine the feasibility of using real-time nonionizing ultrasonography for implant surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 40 healthy young participants. The courses of the GPA were identified using intraoral ultrasound probes from the first premolar to the second molar. The distance from the gingival margin to the GPA (GM-GPA) and the depth of the palatal gingiva from the GPA (PG-GPA) were measured by two independent examiners. Measurements were analyzed statistically, and interexaminer reliability was determined. RESULTS The distance of the GM-GPA and the mean depth of the PG-GPA were 14.8 ± 1.6 mm and 4.10 ± 0.51 mm (mean ± SD), respectively. GM-GPA decreased when the GPA ran from the second molar to the first molar, and GM-GPA was significantly shorter in females (P < 0.05). PG-GPA increased when the GPA ran to the posterior teeth. Interexaminer measurement agreements were excellent, with intraclass correlation coefficient values of 0.983 and 0.918 for GM-GPA and PG-GPA, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Using an intraoral ultrasound probe, real-time GPA tracking is possible, which is expected to help reduce the possibility of bleeding during surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the present study, we sought to investigate the in vivo musculoaponeurotic architecture of the masseter muscle (MM) volumetrically with ultrasound in asymptomatic participants. It was hypothesized that the mean fiber bundle length (FBL) and mean aponeurotic height of laminae of the MM differ significantly between the relaxed state and maximally contracted state upon elevation of the mandible. STUDY DESIGN The MM was investigated volumetrically in 12 male and 12 female asymptomatic participants (mean age, 25.8 ± 4.1 years) using ultrasound. The mean FBL and mean height of aponeuroses in the relaxed and maximally contracted states were compared using paired t tests, with significance established at P ≤ .05. Intrarater reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS The MM consisted of the superficial head (SH) and deep head, each arranged in multiple laminae. Fiber bundles extended between superior and inferior aponeuroses and/or bone. Statistically significant differences (P ≤ .05) were observed in mean FBL and in mean height of aponeuroses between the relaxed and contracted states only in superficial laminae of the SH. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest there is differential contraction of the laminae of the MM in the transition from relaxed to contracted states. Future comparison with pathologic patients can be made on the basis of an established normative database.

MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 15 patients with Class III dentofacial deformities who were treated with combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgery. Fifteen individuals with normal occlusion and no signs or symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction were used as controls. All records were obtained bilaterally in the study group before surgery (T1), at 3 months after surgery (T2), and in the control group (CG) while at rest and in maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). RESULTS There was no difference in resting masseter muscle activity between T1, T2, and CG. Resting thickness and width of the masseter muscle did not differ significantly between T1 and T2. MVC masseter muscle activity and thickness increased significantly and width decreased significantly from T1 to T2 but did not reach CG values. Muscle hardness increased from T1 to T2. CONCLUSIONS The authors' findings indicate that despite improved muscle activity and dimensions, postoperative 3 months is still early period for adaptation of the masseter muscles to the new occlusion and skeletal morphology.

Abstract
Manual massage and foam rolling are commonly used by athletes for warm-up and recovery, as well as by healthy individuals for well-being. Manual massage is an ancient practice requiring the intervention of an experienced physiotherapist, while foam rolling is a more recent self-administered technique. These two topics have been largely studied in isolation from each other. In the present review, we first provide a deep quantitative literature analysis to gather the beneficial effects of each technique through an integrative account, as well as their psychometric and neurophysiological evaluations. We then conceptually consider the motor control strategies induced by each type of massage. During manual massage, the person remains passive, lying on the massage table, and receives unanticipated manual pressure by the physiotherapist, hence resulting in a retroactive mode of action control with an ongoing central integration of proprioceptive feedback. In contrast, while performing foam rolling, the person directly exerts pressures through voluntary actions to manipulate the massaging tool, therefore through a predominant proactive mode of action control, where operations of forward and inverse modeling do not require sensory feedback. While these opposite modes of action do not seem to offer any compromise, we then discuss whether technological advances and collaborative robots might reconcile proactive and retroactive modes of action control during a massage, and offer new massage perspectives through a stochastic sensorimotor user experience. This transition faculty, from one mode of control to the other, might definitely represent an innovative conceptual approach in terms of human-machine interactions.

Abstract
Background: Isolated manual therapy techniques (MT) have shown beneficial effects in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) but the effect of the combination of such techniques, together with the well-stablished splint therapy (ST) remains to be elucidated. Objective: This study was conducted to ascertain whether a combined program of MT techniques, including intraoral treatment, plus traditional ST improves pain and clinical dysfunction in subjects with TMD. Methods: A preliminary trial was conducted. 16 participants were assigned to either the MT plus ST-Experimental Group (EG, n = 8) or the ST alone—Control Group (CG, n = 8). Forty-five minute sessions of combined MT techniques were performed, once a week for four weeks. Three evaluations were conducted: baseline, post-treatment, and one-month follow-up. Outcome measures were pain perception, pain pressure threshold (PPT), TMD dysfunction, and perception of change after treatment. Results: EG showed significant reduction on pain, higher PPT, significant improvement of dysfunction and significantly positive perception of change after treatment (p < 0.05 all). Additionally, such positive effects were maintained at follow-up with a high treatment effect (R2 explaining 26.6–33.2% of all variables). Conclusion: MT plus ST showed reduction on perceived pain (3 points decrease), higher PPT (of at least 1.0 kg/cm2), improvement of disability caused by pain (4.4 points decrease), and positive perception of change (EG: 50% felt “much improvement”), compared to ST alone.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are diseases that affect the temporomandibular joint and supporting structures. The goal of treatment for TMDs is elimination or reduction of pain and return to normal temporomandibular joint function. Initial treatment for TMDs is non-invasive and conservative, not surgical. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons should fully understand and actively care about non-invasive treatments for TMDs. The purpose of this study is to review the validity and outcomes of non-invasive and surgical treatment modalities for TMDs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients have complex healthcare needs and typically require more than one healthcare discipline to address issues regarding their health. Interprofessional teams of healthcare professionals may be able to address these complex needs and improve patient outcomes by combining resources. To evaluate the feasibility of integrating ultrasound into a dental school curriculum to teach anatomy as part of an interprofessional education experience, the current study surveyed first-year dental students to determine their perceptions of the integration of ultrasound techniques into the curriculum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ultrasound laboratory exercises were developed for first-year dental students as part of their anatomy course. The exercises were focused on head, neck and abdominal anatomy. To assess student perception of the integration of ultrasound into the dental curriculum, a survey was created specifically for the current study. RESULTS Between 2013 and 2015, two classes of first-year dental students participated in the ultrasound laboratory exercise and completed the survey (n = 83). Student survey responses suggested ultrasound was a valuable teaching tool because it allowed them to visualise anatomical structures using live imaging. They also agreed that the ultrasound laboratory exercises were an efficient learning tool, but the majority did not believe that they would use ultrasound regularly in their future practice. CONCLUSIONS Results of the current study suggested first-year dental students were satisfied with the integration of ultrasound techniques into the dental curriculum. Survey results indicated that the students enjoyed the ultrasound laboratory exercise and felt ultrasound was an effective learning tool.

Abstract
This article reviews recently published studies investigating the MRI and sonographic diagnosis of masticatory muscle myalgia in temporomandibular disorder patients. The MRI and sonographic features of muscle after treatment are also discussed. Literature published within the last 15 years was obtained from the PubMed database using the following Mesh terms: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or sonography, masticatory muscle pain, and treatment. MRI and sonography enable accurate visualization and evaluation of the masticatory muscles, thereby increasing our understanding of pathology and cause of pain associated with these muscles. Although therapeutic efficacy is often evaluated based on clinical findings, MR and sonographic imaging studies may also be valuable.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of massage therapy on the masticatory muscles and occlusal splint usage on quality of life and pain in individuals with sleep bruxism. METHOD A randomized, controlled, blinded, clinical trial was conducted involving 78 volunteers aged 18 to 40 years with sleep bruxism. Quality of life and pain assessments were performed. RESULTS Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found on the physical functioning, general health state, vitality, role emotional and mental health subscales. A large effect size was found for all treatment protocols with regard to pain. The largest effect was found in the combined treatment group. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study reveal that the occlusal splint usage alone led to improvements in components of quality of life among individuals with sleep bruxism. Moreover, both treatments (occlusal splint usage and massage therapy on the masticatory muscles) led to a reduction in pain.

Abstract
Background The study aimed to determine if ultrasonography of masseter can be used to evaluate the outcome of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) such as myositis and myofascial pain. Methods Fifteen TMD subjects with myofascial pain/myositis who satisfied the RDC/McNeil criteria were included in the study. All the subjects were administered TENS therapy for a period of 6 days (30 minutes per session). The mouth opening (in millimeters) and severity of pain (visual analogue scale score) and ultrasonographic thickness of the masseter (in millimeters) in the region of trigger/tender areas was assessed in all the subjects both prior and post TENS therapy. A comparison of the pre-treatment and post-treatment values of the VAS score, mouth opening and masseter thickness was done with the help of a t-test. Results There was a significant reduction in the thickness of masseter muscle (P = 0.028) and VAS scores (P < 0.001) post TENS therapy. There was also a significant improvement in the mouth opening (P = 0.011) post TENS therapy. Conclusions In the present study, ultrasonography was found to be an effective measuring tool in the assessment of TENS therapy in subjects with myositis and myofascial pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present comparative study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of Th US and TENS in the management of myofascial pain in TMD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present randomized comparative study was on 90 patients who were further assigned in three different groups each having 30 patients; Group I was healthy control patients, Group II was receiving Th US therapy, and Group III was receiving TENS therapy. All the 90 patients were further evaluated for maximum inter incisor subjective evaluation regarding muscle pain, impediment to daily life, massage impression on visual analog scale (VAS) scale, and intensity and duration used in Th US massage. RESULTS The masseter muscle thickness in control group was 12.00 (standard deviation [SD] ±1.1) mm when compared with TMD patient of 13.00 (SD ± 1.1) mm before treatment. Statistical significant findings on VAS score of muscle pain, impediment to daily life, and massage impression were observed in Th US. After treatment, the anechoic areas disappeared or were reduced in Th US group by 95.6% and in TENS by 74.4%. CONCLUSION Th US appeared to be subjectively better which was related to VAS score of massage impression, muscle pain, and impediment to daily life after treatment as well as sonographically related to existence of anechoic areas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To verify the use of a single coupling agent as a reference to obtain the elasticity index (EI) ratios and to investigate the EI ratios of the masseter muscles of healthy volunteers. METHODS Muscle phantoms with known elasticity (20, 40 and 60 kPa in the Young's modulus) were examined by strain-type sonoelastography using a coupling agent as the reference. Eight examiners tested soft (with 7 kPa) and hard (with 40 kpa) reference coupling agents separately. The correlation coefficients were determined between the EI ratio and Young's modulus of muscle phantoms. The interclass correlation coefficients were calculated for inter- and intraexaminer agreement. RESULTS Strong correlations were found between the EI ratios and Young's modulus for both soft and hard references. The variations of the EI ratios were larger with soft coupling agents than those with hard coupling agents, and they increased in phantoms with 60 kPa elasticity. There were no differences in the EI ratios of the masseter muscle at rest between males and females or between the right and left sides. The ratio increased during clenching. CONCLUSIONS The hard reference coupling agent was suitable for obtaining EI ratio of the masseter muscle. No differences were found in the EI ratios of the masseter muscle either between sexes or between the right and left sides at rest, and the ratios increased with the widening of their variations during clenching.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to detect sonographic predictors for the efficacy of massage treatment of masseter and temporal muscle in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) patients with myofascial pain. METHODS Thirty-seven TMD patients with myofascial pain (6 men and 31 women, a median age of 45 years) were enrolled. An oral rehabilitation robot massaged the patient's masseter and temporal muscles with a standard massage pressure of 10 N for 16 min. The standard treatment protocol was set five sessions every 2 weeks. The median total duration of treatment was 9.5 weeks. Efficacy of treatment was evaluated based on maximum mouth opening and visual analog scale scores of muscle pain and daily life impediments. The intramuscular echogenic bands and elasticity index ratios of the masseter muscles were evaluated on sonographic or sonoelastographic images obtained before treatment and after the third and last treatment sessions. RESULTS The sonographic features detected different changes after the third treatment session between the therapy-effective and therapy-ineffective groups: in the therapy-effective group, the frequency of visibility of the distinct echogenic bands increased, and the elasticity index ratio decreased. CONCLUSION Sonographic features after the third treatment session may be useful as predictors of therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the intramuscular changes on sonographic elastography (SE) after low-level static contraction of the masseter muscle, and to clarify the relationship with the total hardness and edematous change. STUDY DESIGN Ten healthy volunteers performed sustained bilateral biting at 20% of maximal voluntary contraction for 10 min. The SE and magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the masseter muscles were performed before, immediately after, and 10 min after exercise. The masseter muscle elasticity index (MEI) ratio, muscle thickness, and intramuscular soft and hard areas distribution were evaluated on SE images. The signal to noise ratio (SNR), indicating the water content, was measured on MR images. RESULTS The soft area ratio showed significant correlations with the water content expressed as SNR. The hard area ratio showed significant correlations with the total muscle hardness expressed as the MEI ratio. CONCLUSION Intramuscular soft and hard areas could be used both clinically and experimentally.

Abstract
Ultrasonography as an imaging modality in dentistry has been extensively explored in recent years due to several advantages that diagnostic ultrasound provides. It is a non-invasive, inexpensive, painless method and unlike X-ray, it does not cause harmful ionizing radiation. Ultrasound has a promising future as a diagnostic imaging tool in all specialties in dentistry, for both hard and soft tissue detection. The aim of this review is to provide the scientific community and clinicians with an overview of the most recent advances of ultrasound imaging in dentistry. The use of ultrasound is described and discussed in the fields of dental scanning, caries detection, dental fractures, soft tissue and periapical lesions, maxillofacial fractures, periodontal bony defects, gingival and muscle thickness, temporomandibular disorders, and implant dentistry.

Abstract
The study aimed to clarify the masseter muscle hardness in patients with myofascial pain, to examine their changes after massage, and to analyze whether the hardness can be an index for massage treatment. Sixteen patients with myofascial pain (12 with unilateral and 4 with bilateral masseter muscle pain) and 24 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. The masseter hardness between patients and the healthy volunteers was compared. The changes in the hardness in patients after massage were examined. The relation of the hardness with massage regimens and efficacies was analyzed. There was a significant right-and-left difference of the hardness in patients, although there was no difference in the healthy volunteers. The hardness decreased after massage. The pretreatment asymmetry index of the hardness showed a significant correlation with the massage pressure. It was concluded that there was a significant difference between the right and left masseter hardness in patients with myofascial pain. After massage treatment, the masseter hardness and right-and-left difference decreased. The hardness may be an index for determining the massage pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of massage therapy compared with occlusal splint therapy on mandibular range of motion (ROM) in individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and compare the results with ROM obtained in a group of individuals without this disorder. METHODS A blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted. Twenty-eight volunteers with TMD were randomly distributed into either a massage therapy group or an occlusal splint group. Both treatments were provided for 4 weeks. Fourteen individuals without TMD were consecutively allocated to a comparison group. Fonseca anamnestic index was used to characterize TMD and allocate the volunteers to either of the intervention groups or asymptomatic comparison group. Mandibular ROM was evaluated before and after treatment using a digital caliper. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance with a post hoc Bonferroni testing was used for intergroup and intragroup comparisons (level of significance was set to 5%). Cohen d was used to calculate the effect size. RESULTS In the intragroup analysis, significant increases in ROM were found for all measures in both the massage and occlusal splint groups (P < .05). A small to moderate clinical effect of treatment with the occlusal splint was found regarding right and left lateral excursion in comparison with the massage therapy and asymptomatic comparison groups (0.2 <d < 0.5). CONCLUSION Massage therapy on the masticatory muscles and the use of an occlusal splint lead to an increase in mandibular ROM similar to that of the asymptomatic comparison group with regard to maximum active mouth opening and both right and left excursion in individuals with TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The utility of ultrasound (US) for therapeutic purposes is still in its infancy. Therapeutic US (TUS) has been used widely in medical field for urological application, surgical intervention, bone healing, and osteointegration in cancer and healing of full thickness excised skin lesions, and within dentistry as a prediagnostic, diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. The purpose of the paper is to review and determine the efficacy of US as one of the treatment modalities for its role in maxillofacial region to reduce pain and promote soft tissue healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS A Medline search included of the international literature published between 1976 and 2011 and was restricted to English language articles, published work of past researchers including in vitro and in vivo studies, recent additions of textbooks on surgical and therapeutic applications of US and, current articles in conference papers and reports accessed from the internet using Google search engine on therapeutic ultrasound. RESULTS Very few article regarding effect of therapeutic of US for its use of insonation for treatment of patient with pain and soft tissue injury are available. This review article mainly emphasizes the therapeutic utility of US in dentistry for its effectiveness to decrease joint stiffness, reduce pain and muscle spasms and improve muscle mobility. In vivo studies have shown very little clinical effects. CONCLUSIONS Further research is warranted in this clinically important area to make the development of noninvasive, multifunctional ultrasound devices for repair, regeneration and other therapeutic utility a success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) can be used to evaluate changes that accompany skeletal muscle contraction. PURPOSE To investigate whether jaw opening or closure affect the diffusion parameters of the masseter muscles (MMs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Eleven healthy volunteers were evaluated. Diffusion-tensor images were acquired to obtain the primary (λ(1)), secondary (λ(2)), and tertiary eigenvalues (λ(3)). We estimated these parameters at three different locations: at the level of the mandibular notch for the superior site, the level of the mandibular foramen for the middle site, and the root apex of the mandibular molars for the inferior site. RESULTS Both λ(2) and λ(3) during jaw opening were significantly lower than that at rest at the superior (P = 0.006, P < 0.0001, respectively) and middle site (P = 0.004, P = 0.0001, respectively); however, the change in λ(1) was not significant. At the lower site, no parameter was significantly different at rest and during jaw opening. There was no significant difference in T2 between at rest (40.3 ± 4.4 ms) and during jaw opening (39.2 ± 2.7 ms; P = 0.12). The changes induced by jaw closure were marked at the inferior site. In the middle and inferior sites, the three eigenvalues were increased by jaw closure, and the changes in λ(1) (P = 0.0145, P = 0.0107, respectively) and λ(2) (P = 0.0003, P = 0.0001) were significant (especially λ(2)). CONCLUSION The eigenvalues for diffusion of the MM were sensitive to jaw position. The recruitment of muscle fibers, specific to jaw position, reflects the differences in changes in muscle diffusion parameters.
