Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review investigates the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications of immunohistochemical markers in dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) associated with impacted third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive search strategy was employed across major databases including MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science, from the inception of the databases to March 2024. Keywords and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms such as "dentigerous cysts", "odontogenic keratocysts", "immunohistochemistry", "Ki-67", and "p53" were used. The PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed to ensure methodological rigor. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies on humans and animals providing definitive diagnoses or specific signs and symptoms related to DCs and OKCs, with results on protein expression derived from immunohistochemistry, immune antibody, proteomics, or protein expression methods. RESULTS Of the 159 studies initially identified, 138 met the inclusion criteria. Our analysis highlighted significantly higher expressions of Ki-67 (22.1% ± 4.7 vs. 10.5% ± 3.2, p < 0.001), p53 (15.3% ± 3.6 vs. 5.2% ± 1.9, p < 0.001), and Bcl-2 (18.4% ± 3.2 vs. 8.7% ± 2.4, p < 0.001) in OKCs compared to DCs, indicating a higher proliferative index, increased cellular stress, and enhanced anti-apoptotic mechanisms in OKCs. Additionally, PCNA levels were higher in OKCs (25.6% ± 4.5 vs. 12.3% ± 3.1, p < 0.001). Genetic mutations, particularly in the PTCH1 gene, were frequently observed in OKCs, underscoring their aggressive behavior and potential malignancy. CONCLUSIONS The findings emphasize the significant role of immunohistochemical markers in distinguishing between DCs and OKCs, with elevated levels of Ki-67, p53, Bcl-2, and PCNA in OKCs suggesting a higher potential for growth and recurrence. Genetic insights, including PTCH1 mutations, further support the need for personalized treatment approaches. These markers enhance diagnostic accuracy and inform targeted therapeutic strategies, potentially transforming patient management in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunoexpression of chemokine CXCL12 and its receptor CXCR4 in radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and to correlate the findings with morphologic parameters of RCs (inflammatory infiltrate and cystic epithelium). Twenty RCs, 20 DCs, and 20 OKCs were submitted to immunohistochemistry. The percentages of cytoplasmic (CXCL12 and CXCR4) and nuclear (CXCR4) staining in epithelial and fibrous capsule cells were determined. RCs and DCs exhibited higher epithelial expression of CXCL12 than OKCs ( P <0.05). The expression of CXCL12 in the fibrous capsule was higher in DCs than in RCs and OKCs ( P <0.05). Higher cytoplasmic expression of CXCR4 was observed in the epithelial lining and fibrous capsule of RCs and DCs compared with OKCs ( P <0.05). In the fibrous capsule, DCs exhibited higher nuclear expression of CXCR4 than OKCs ( P <0.05). No significant differences in the immunoexpression of CXCL12 or CXCR4 were observed according to the morphologic parameters of RCs ( P >0.05). Strong positive correlations were found between cytoplasmic and nuclear expression of CXCR4 in the epithelial lining of RCs and DCs and in the fibrous capsule of all groups ( P <0.05). The results suggest the participation of CXCL12 and CXCR4 in the pathogenesis of RCs, DCs, and OKCs. These proteins may be particularly relevant for the development of odontogenic cysts with less aggressive biological behavior, irrespective of their nature (inflammatory or developmental). In RCs, the expression of CXCL12 and CXCR4 may not be related to the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate or the status of cystic epithelium.

Abstract
Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) associated odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) show more aggressive behavior and it has a higher frequency of relapse than non-syndromic OKCs. Stromal myofibroblasts (MFs), characterized by α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA), desmin and caldesmon expression, and metalloproteinases (MMPs) have an essential role in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The aim of the study is to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of MMP-7, MMP-9, αSMA and other new markers in the study of OKCs MFs such as desmin and caldesmon in NBCCS-associated OKCs compared to recurrent and sporadic keratocysts. Fourty 40 patients (23 M and 17 F) underwent surgery to remove the OKCs. The histological sections in paraffin were incubated with markers antibodies and a semi-quantitative score was used to evaluate the immunoreactivity. Densitometric analysis showed a very significantly increased expression of αSMA, caldesmon, MMP-7 and MMP-9 in NBCCS-OKCs compared to non-syndromic OKCs (p < 0.001). However, desmin showed a not significant increased expression in non-syndromic OKC compared to NBCCS-OKCs specimens in which desmin was slightly or not at all expressed. NBCSS-OKCs showed a greater distribution of MFs compared to the other OKCs subtypes. Further studies will be needed to evaluate whether the different expressions of these markers can be correlated to a different clinical behavior.

Abstract
Cystic lesions are considered to be one of the most common pathologies of the maxillofacial region, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) may represent potential etiological factors. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the role of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and their endogenous tissue inhibitors, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2, respectively, in the pathogenesis of maxillofacial cystic lesions. A total of 25 patients diagnosed with radicular cysts (RCs; n=20), dentigerous cysts (n=3) and retention cysts (RtCs; n=7) were enrolled in the present study. Gelatin zymography was performed to assess the gelatinolytic activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and commercial ELISA kits were used to determine TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 concentrations. Gelatin zymography revealed the presence of both MMP-2 and MMP-9 in all types of samples analyzed. An increase in MMP-9 activity, TIMP-1 concentration and MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio was observed in the fluid obtained from RCs compared with that obtained from RtCs. In conclusion, MMP-9 may be involved in the pathogenesis of RCs, whereas the activity of MMP-2 in the wall of RtCs was low, and this gelatinase did not appear to significantly affect the development of this type of lesion.

Abstract
Background: Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is an odontogenic lesion which manifests distinct biological behavior. Predominant studies in KCOT attribute this behavior to high epithelial proliferative capacity. Besides, a few studies facet loosely arranged collagen can contribute to the behavior of KCOT. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix components under both physiologic and pathologic conditions. The loosely arranged collagen in connective tissue wall of KCOT could be related to the degree of MMP-9 expression. Aim: To evaluate the arrangement of collagen fibers along with immunoexpression of MMP-9 and to relate to its neoplastic biologic behavior in sporadic cases of KCOT. Materials and Methods: KCOT ( n = 23) and dentigerous cyst (DC) ( n = 15) samples were processed for the following techniques: Masson’s trichrome stain for light microscopy, PMA-PSR stain for confocal microscopy, and MMP-9 for immunohistochemistry. Results: In Masson’s trichrome analysis, correlation of collagen fiber arrangement in the deeper regions with color intensity for KCOT was found to be statistically significant ( P = .033). In confocal microscopy, there was no difference between intensities in KCOT ( P = .990) and DC ( P = .233), respectively. The immunoexpression of MMP-9 in the connective tissue wall of DC (73.3%) was relatively higher than that of KCOT (60.8%). However, on comparison between KCOT and DC in the presence of inflammation, the immunoexpression of MMP-9 was higher in DC (100%) than KCOT (69.9%) and was statistically significant ( P = .028). Conclusion: It was concluded that the loose connective tissue wall in KCOT is because of the inherent nature of the lesion that could facilitate its biologic behavior. If inflammation is present, this could further aggravate the tumorigenic behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the effects of silencing farnesyltransferase (FTase) on the migration and invasion of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) through RNA interference. METHODS TSCC cells (CAL27 and SCC-4) were cultured in vitro and then transfected with siRNA to silence FTase expression. The tested cells were categorized as follows: experimental group (three RNA interference groups), negative control group, and blank control group. mRNA expression of FTase and HRAS in each group was analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. On the basis of FTase mRNA expression, the optimum interference group (highest silencing efficiency) was selected as the experimental group for further study. The protein expression of FTase, HRAS, p65, p-p65(S536), matrix metalloprotein-9 (MMP-9), hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was analyzed by Western blot. The invasion and migration abilities of TSCC cells were determined by Transwell invasion assay and cell wound healing assay. RESULTS The mRNA and protein expression of FTase in the experimental group decreased compared with that in the negative control and blank control groups (P<0.05). The mRNA and protein expression of HRAS was not significantly different among the groups (P>0.05). In the experimental group, the protein expression of p-p65(S536), MMP-9, HIF-1α, and VEGF decreased (P<0.05), whereas that of p65 had no significant change (P>0.05). The migration and invasion abilities of the experimental group were inhibited significantly (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Silencing FTase in vitro could effectively downregulate its expression in TSCC cell lines and reduce the migration and invasion abilities to a certain extent. FTase could be a new gene therapy target of TSCC, and this research provided a new idea for the clinical treatment of TSCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the immunoexpressions of Regγ, Wnt-1, and β-catenin in ameloblastomas, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOTs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). STUDY DESIGN Thirty solid ameloblastomas, 20 AOTs, and 30 OKCs were selected for analysis of the immunoexpression of Regγ, Wnt-1, and β-catenin. Each case was semiquantitatively evaluated in the epithelial component and in their different cellular compartments (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus). RESULTS Ameloblastomas displayed higher cytoplasmic and nuclear Regγ expression compared with AOTs and OKCs, as well as higher membrane and cytoplasmic Wnt-1 expression (P < .05). β-catenin membrane expression was higher in OKCs compared with ameloblastomas and AOTs (P < .05). Nuclear β-catenin expression was higher in ameloblastomas and AOTs than in OKCs (P < .05). Cytoplasmic and nuclear Regγ expression in AOTs were positively correlated with nuclear β-catenin expression (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The marked expressions of Regγ, Wnt-1, and β-catenin suggest the participation of these proteins in the pathogenesis of the studied lesions. The greater expressions of Regγ, Wnt-1, and nuclear β-catenin in ameloblastomas may be related to their more aggressive behavior. Pro-tumor effects of nuclear β-catenin may be counterbalanced by inhibitory pathways in AOTs, justifying their low aggressiveness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The biologic effects of surgical decompression on the epithelium and connective tissues of periapical cysts are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of tissue repair and inflammatory biomarkers in periapical cysts before and after surgical decompression. STUDY DESIGN Nine specimens of periapical cysts treated with decompression before undergoing complete enucleation were immunohistochemically analyzed to investigate the expression of interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, transforming growth factor-β1, matrix metalloproteinase-9, Ki-67, and epidermal growth factor receptor. Expression of the biomarkers was classified as positive, focal, or negative. Ki-67 immunoexpression was calculated as a cell proliferation index. The expression of the biomarkers was compared in the specimens from decompression and from the final surgical procedure. RESULTS Computed tomography demonstrated that volume was reduced in all cysts after decompression. There were no differences in the immunoexpression of the proinflammatory and tissue repair biomarkers when comparing the specimens obtained before and after the decompression. CONCLUSIONS Surgical decompression was efficient in reducing the volume of periapical cysts before complete enucleation. When comparing the specimens obtained from surgical decompression and from complete surgical removal, the immunohistochemical analysis did not show a decrease in proinflammatory biomarkers; neither did it show an increase in tissue repair biomarkers.

Abstract
Odontogenic lesions differ in their rate of recurrence and aggressiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of myofibroblasts and mast cells in odontogenic lesions. Sample consisted of 20 cases each of dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and solid ameloblastomas. Histologic sections were submitted to immunohistochemistry using anti-α-smooth muscle actin and anti-tryptase antibodies. Myofibroblasts and mast cells were counted at ×400 magnification in 5 and 10 fields, respectively. Myofibroblasts were more frequent in ameloblastomas (24.41), followed by odontogenic keratocysts (16.21) and dentigerous cysts (11.85; P=.002). Granulated and degranulated mast cells were more frequent in dentigerous cysts (7.88 and 8.96, respectively), followed by odontogenic keratocysts (6.53 and 7.08) and ameloblastomas (5.21 and 1.88). The difference was only significant for degranulated mast cells (P<.05). Analysis of the correlation between myofibroblasts and mast cells (granulated and degranulated) revealed a moderate positive correlation only in ameloblastomas (R=0.621, P=.003). Probably, myofibroblasts are related to the biological behavior of the odontogenic lesions studied, particularly their aggressiveness. On the other hand, mast cells seem to be associated with inflammatory processes, which are more frequent in cystic lesions than in benign neoplasms. In addition, mast cells may induce the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, thus increasing the number of the latter.

Abstract
Background CD166 is a glycoprotein of an immunoglobulin super family of adhesion molecules that has been associated with aggressive characteristics and high recurrence rate of tumors. Different odontogenic lesions exhibit considerable histological variation and different clinical behavior. In an attempt to clarify the mechanisms underlying this different behavior, the present study investigates the immunohistochemical expression of CD166 in these lesions. Material and Methods In this study 69 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue blocks of odontogenic lesion consist of 15 unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), 17 solid ameloblastoma (SA), 18 keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT), and 19 dentigerous cysts (DC) were reviewed by immunohistochemistry for CD166 staining. Results In this study, CD166 immune staining was evident in all specimen groups except dentigerous cyst. In positive cases, protein localization was cytoplasmic and/or membranous. CD166 expression was seen in76.5% (13) of SA, 73.5% (11) of UA, and 66.7% (12) of KCOTs. Statistical analysis showed that CD166 expression levels were significantly higher in ameloblastoma (SA and UA) and KCOTs than dentigerous cyst (P
<0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between CD166 expression in the other groups (P>0.05). Conclusions This data demonstrates that overexpression of CD166 may have a role in the pathogenesis of ameloblastoma and KCOT. Abstract
Aim Odontogenic myxoma is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaws, with a locally aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate. CD-105 is a homodimeric cell membrane glycoprotein and is a component of the TGF-β1 growth factor receptor complex that modulates angiogenesis by regulating the proliferation, differentiation and cellular migration. The aim of this study is to quantify the microvascular density of the odontogenic myxoma based on the expression of CD-105. Materials and Methods The analysis included 18 odontogenic myxoma and 18 dental follicles as controls. A standard immunohistochemical procedure was performed with the CD-105 antibody. Five representative fields (40×) of the odontogenic myxoma and the dental follicles were selected to determine the microvascular density, which was then followed by a descriptive and comparative statistical analysis. Results Dental follicles presented a significantly higher microvascular density compared with odontogenic myxoma (P = .001). The odontogenic myxoma smaller than 3 cm showed a greater microvascular density than those larger than 3 cm in size (P > .05), and the microvascular density was lower in large odontogenic myxomas as compared with the dental follicles (P = .003). Conclusion A weaker expression of CD-105 in odontogenic myxoma might indicate a lower angiogenic activity, suggesting that vascular proliferation has a limited role in the growth mechanisms and in the aggressive behavior of this neoplasm.

Abstract
Toll-like receptors (TLR) are essential for the innate immune response against invading pathogens and have been described in immunocompetent cells of areas affected by periapical disease. Besides initiating the inflammatory response, they also directly regulate epithelial cell proliferation and survival in a variety of settings. This study evaluates the in situ expression of TLR4 in periapical granulomas (PG) and radicular cysts, focusing on the epithelial compartment. Twenty-one periapical cysts (PC) and 10 PG were analyzed; 7 dentigerous non-inflamed follicular cyst (DC) served as control. TLR4 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. TLR4 immunoreaction products were detected in the epithelium of all specimens, with a higher percentage of immunostained cells in PG. Although TLR4 overexpression was detected in both PG and PC, there were differences that seemed to be related to the nature of the lesion, since in PG all epithelial cells of strands, islands and trabeculae were strongly immunoreactive for TLR4, whereas in PC only some areas of the basal and suprabasal epithelial layers were immunostained. This staining pattern is consistent with the action of TLR4: in PG it could promote formation of epithelial cell rests of Malassez and in epithelial strands and islands the enhancement of cell survival, proliferation and migration, whereas in PC TLR4 could protect the lining epithelium from extensive apoptosis. These findings go some way towards answering the intriguing question of why many epithelial strands or islands in PG and the lining epithelium of apical cysts regress after non-surgical endodontic therapy, and suggest that TLR4 plays a key role in the pathobiology of the inflammatory process related to periapical disease.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) work as molecular chaperones that can assist cells to deal with stressful situations. Members of the HSP70 family can regulate cell growth and transformation and are involved in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. In view of the distinct clinical behavior of odontogenic lesions, the objective of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of HSP70 in these lesions. In this study, 70 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of odontogenic lesion-16 unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs), 17 solid ameloblastomas (SAs), 18 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and 19 dentigerous cysts (DCs)-were reviewed by immunohistochemistry for HSP70 staining. In this study, HSP70 immunostaining was evident in all groups of the specimen. Mean percentage of HSP70 staining in SAs (84.2 ± 11.3) and OKCs (83.4 ± 6.8) were significantly higher than UAs (64.4 ± 9.8) and DCs (12.6 ± 10.2) (p = 0.00). But, there was no statistically significant difference between HSP70 expression in SAs and OKCs. The result of this study proposes that high expression rate of HSP70 has a role in the pathogenesis of ameloblastoma and OKC and is one of the reasons for the aggressive behavior of ameloblastoma and high recurrence role of OKC, reinforcing the classification of OKC as an odontogenic tumor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an essential role in the activation of innate immunity and they can promote cancer cell survival and tumor progression. It has been claimed that TLRs can somehow predict the clinical behavior in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCCs). AIM To elucidate the molecular basis underlying keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOCTs) aggressive behavior and recurrence we carried out this immunohistochemical study on TLR3 and TLR4 expression in sporadic primary KCOTs (sp-KCOTs), sporadic recurrent KCOTs (sp-KCOTs), and NBCCS-associated KCOTs (NBCCS-KCOTs). METHOD 40 cases of KOCTs removed from 23 men and 17 women were the sample. Paraffin-embedded blocks were processed for immunohistochemistry. Sections were incubated with TLR3 and TLR4 antibodies and immunoreactivity evaluated on a semi-quantitative score. RESULTS Both TLR3 and TLR4 were expressed in KCOTs epithelium, although with a different extent. TLR3 was not expressed in sp-KCOTs and sr-KCOTs, but it showed a faint staining in NBCCS-KCOTs. On the other hand, both cytoplasmic and nuclear staining for TLR4 was detected in all the 3 types of lesions; however being significantly more expressed in sr-KCOT and NBCCS-KCOTs (p < 0.0001). Our results, demonstrated an association between TLR4, but not TLR3 expression to recurrence behavior of KCOTs. In fact, TLR4 was up-regulated in sr-KCOTs and NBCCS-KCOTs but not in sp-KCOTs. CONCLUSIONS According these findings it seems conceivable to assume that the up-regulation of TLR4 in some KCOTs can be correlated somehow to their tendency recurrence.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to clarify whether epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is involved in the pathogenesis and development of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). The expression levels of EMT-related proteins and genes in normal oral mucosa (OM), radicular cyst (RC), and KCOT were determined and compared by real-time quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry. Our data showed that the expression of epithelial markers E-cadherin and Pan-cytokeratin was significantly downregulated in KCOT with upregulation of mesenchymal markers N-cadherin compared to OM and RC. Importantly, TGF-β, a potent EMT inducer, and Slug, a master transcription factor, were also found highly expressed in KCOT. In addition, the results from Spearman rank correlation test and clustering analysis revealed the close relationship between Slug and MMP-9, which was further evidenced by double-labeling immunofluorescence that revealed a synchronous distribution for Slug with MMP-9 in KCOT samples. All the data suggested EMT might be involved in the locally aggressive behavior of KCOT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The unpredictable behavior of giant cell lesions (GCLs) of the jaws parallels its controversial histogenesis. This study evaluated a possible association between the immunohistochemical expression of NF-ĸB, the inhibitory subunits IĸBα/IĸBβ, and clinicopathological variables with the behavior of central and peripheral GCLs of the jaws. MATERIALS AND METHODS Paraffin-embedded samples of GCLs of the jaws (n = 68) were prepared for histological/immunohistochemical assessment. Demographic and clinicopathological parameters were assessed to determine the behavior of the lesions. A staining-intensity-distribution (SID) score was used to assess the immunomarkers reactivity. The association between significant candidate immunohistochemical predictor variables regarding clinical behavior was analyzed individually and adjusted for confounding using a binary logistic regression model. RESULTS While univariate analysis revealed a positive association of NF-ĸB SID score, NF-ĸB nuclear expression, IĸBα SID score, and NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio with the aggressive status of GCLs, after bivariate logistic regression analysis, only NF-ĸB nuclear expression, IĸBα SID score, and NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio remained as robust predictors of aggressiveness. Confounding and interaction effects regarding clinicopathological candidate predictor variables were also noted. CONCLUSION It looks that clinical behavior of GCLs of the jaws may be strong/independently linked to the increased nuclear expression of NF-ĸB, higher NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio, and decreased IĸBα SID score. Notwithstanding, there are simultaneously synergistic and opposing interactive effects with respect to age stratum, growth rate, multinucleated giant cells count, and mononuclear stromal cells density in the susceptible host that may increase the tissue destruction observed in aggressive GCLs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mechanisms of the dentigerous cyst formation from the normal eruption follicle is unknown but disturbances in the proteolytic activity have been suspected, since the growth of these cysts is accompanied by local bone destruction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) in human dental dentigerous cysts and healthy dental follicles. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied 10 patients with dentigerous cysts and 10 healthy dental follicles from the lower jaw in respect to their immunoexpression of MMPs -8, -9, -25, and -26 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases -1 (TIMP-1). RESULTS MMP-8 was expressed slightly more in cyst epithelium than in odontogenic epithelium of healthy controls dental follicle but the difference lacked statistical difference. Other MMPs and TIMP-1 did not differ regarding the studied specimens. CONCLUSION Differences in MMP expression cannot solely explain the cyst expansion suggesting the potential involvement of other osteolytic mechanisms.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma (ABL) and keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) are benign odontogenic tumors with local aggressive behaviors. The purpose of our study was to compare MMP-1, MMP-9 and tenascin staining patterns between “aggressive” ameloblastoma / keratocystic odontogenic tumors and “non-aggressive” radicular cysts (RC)/ dentigerous cysts (DC). Ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor, radicular cyst (RC) and dentigerous cyst (DC) specimens were chosen from the archives of Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral Pathology, and immunohistochemically stained with MMP-1, -9 and tenascin antibodies. The immunohistochemical expressions were noted and statistically analyzed. The ABLs and KOTs showed significantly higher MMP-1 and -9 positivity than the RCs and DCs (p<0.05). The ABL and KOT basement membranes showed more continuous tenascin expression. Tenascin intensity was significantly higher in the ABLs and KOTs compared to the RCs and DCs (p<0.05). The results suggest that higher expression of MMP-1 and -9 may play an essential role in the growth and progression of these tumors. Continuous tenascin positivity may reflect strong connective tissue reaction against the invasive epithelial parts of ABLs and KOTs.

Abstract
Dentigerous cysts are uncommon, yet are being reported with increasing frequency in the veterinary literature. Dentigerous cysts are a type of benign odontogenic cyst associated with impacted teeth, most commonly the mandibular first premolar tooth. Significant bone destruction can occur secondary to the expansion of a dentigerous cyst. The expanding cyst can lead to pathology of neighboring teeth, which can include external root resorption or pulpitis. Intraoral dental radiographs are imperative to properly assess the presence and extent of a dentigerous cyst, as well as the status of the neighboring teeth. This case report describes treatment for dentigerous cyst including cyst lining curettage, mandibular bone regeneration, and endodontic therapy for a canine tooth with irreversible pulpitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this preliminary study was to evaluate the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) and growth factors in keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs). STUDY DESIGN The expression of MMPs, TIMPs, growth factors, and the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 signaling pathway were assessed by immunohistochemistry in 15 cases of KOT and 4 cases of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT). RESULTS KOT samples expressed significantly higher amounts of MMPs, TIMPs, growth factors, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and ERK compared with CCOT samples, with the exception of MMP-2 and TIMP-1. CONCLUSIONS MMP-9, TIMP-2, EGF and transforming growth factor α act together and likely regulate the proliferation and aggressiveness of KOT. ERK-1/2 serves as the transducer of signals generated by these proteins, which signal through the common receptor, EGFR. This process may be related to the increased proliferation and aggressiveness observed in KOT.
