High nonlinearities in Langevin transducer: a comprehensive model

Ultrasound-stimulated Brownian ratchet enhances diffusion of molecules retained in hydrogels

We demonstrate that low-frequency ultrasonic stimulation applied directly to a hydrogel, at energy levels below the cavitation threshold, can control the release of a therapeutic molecule. The hydrogel that contained the molecules was enclosed within a hollow acoustic horn. The harmonic modes in the acoustic horn combined with the physical gel structure to induce a flashing ratchet that released all of the retained molecules in less than 90 s at an intensity of 1.5 W cm^-2 (applied energy of 135 J cm^-2, ultrasound center frequency of 27.9 ± 1.5 kHz). In contrast, ultrasound is used currently as a remote stimulus for drug-delivery systems, at energy levels above the cavitation threshold. The low-energy flashing ratchet approach that we describe is applicable to drive the diffusion of molecules in a range of gels that are ubiquitous in biomedical systems, including for example in drug delivery, molecule identification and separation systems.

Parametric Study of Bolt Clamping Effect on Resonance Characteristics of Langevin Transducers with Lumped Circuit Models

We recently proposed a numerical model using equivalent circuit models to analyze the resonance characteristics of Langevin transducers and design them in a systematic manner. However, no pre-load torque biased by a metal bolt was considered in the model. Here, a parametric study is, therefore, carried out to reveal how model parameters are adapted to incorporate the pre-compression effect into our existing model. Analytical results are compared with corresponding experimental data, particularly regarding the input electrical impedance and effective electromechanical coupling coefficient for the transducer at resonance modes. The frequency response of input impedance is presented as a function of torque, both theoretically and experimentally. For 10.0 N·m bias, for instance, both resonance and anti-resonance frequencies are calculated as 38.64 kHz and 39.78 kHz, while these are measured as 38.62 kHz and 39.77 kHz by the impedance analyzer. The impedance difference between these cases is 14 Ω at resonance and 9 kΩ at anti-resonance, while the coupling coefficients in both cases become 0.238 and 0.239, respectively. Hence, these test results are closely matched with their theoretical values. Consequently, this study provides a quantitative guideline that specifies the pre-loading condition of bolt clamps with proper parameter settings to predict the intended resonance characteristics of Langevin transducers.

A Unique Fractional Derivative Operator to Simulate All Dynamic Piezoceramic Dielectric Manifestations: From Aging to Frequency-Dependent Hysteresis

Ferroelectric materials are utilized in many applications ranging from capacitors to data storage. The hysteresis frequency dependence of ferroelectric materials has been well studied. However, the long-term dynamic behavior including aging has not been well documented due to the long time frame required to gather experimental data, but it is critical for understanding the lifespan of these materials in application. Previous work has shown that the hysteresis frequency dependence of dielectric properties can be accurately modeled in the time domain using fractional derivative operators applied on a large frequency bandwidth. Currently, the lowest frequencies tested have been restrained to the hysteresis cycle quasi-static threshold. Below this threshold, the hysteresis shape remains unchanged. This research expands the current knowledge by validating the use of fractional derivative operators in long-term aging models. The model data are experimentally validated using aged piezoelectric samples up to 10⁷ s. These results confirm that the low and high dynamic dielectric material behaviors are linked and can be consequently modeled using fractional derivative operators.

Understanding nonlinear vibration behaviours in high-power ultrasonic surgical devices

Ultrasonic surgical devices are increasingly used in oral, craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery to cut mineralized tissue, offering the surgeon high accuracy with minimal risk to nerve and vessel tissue. Power ultrasonic devices operate in resonance, requiring their length to be a half-wavelength or multiple-half-wavelength. For bone surgery, devices based on a half-wavelength have seen considerable success, but longer multiple-half-wavelength endoscopic devices have recently been proposed to widen the range of surgeries. To provide context for these developments, some examples of surgical procedures and the associated designs of ultrasonic cutting tips are presented. However, multiple-half-wavelength components, typical of endoscopic devices, have greater potential to exhibit nonlinear dynamic behaviours that have a highly detrimental effect on device performance. Through experimental characterization of the dynamic behaviour of endoscopic devices, it is demonstrated how geometrical features influence nonlinear dynamic responses. Period doubling, a known route to chaotic behaviour, is shown to be significantly influenced by the cutting tip shape, whereas the cutting tip has only a limited effect on Duffing-like responses, particularly the shape of the hysteresis curve, which is important for device stability. These findings underpin design, aiming to pave the way for a new generation of ultrasonic endoscopic surgical devices.

Radial vibration and ultrasonic field of a long tubular ultrasonic radiator

The radial vibration of a metal long circular tube is studied analytically and its electro-mechanical equivalent circuit is obtained. Based on the equivalent circuit, the radial resonance frequency equation is derived. The theoretical relationship between the radial resonance frequency and the geometrical dimensions is studied. Finite element method is used to simulate the radial vibration and the radiated ultrasonic field and the results are compared with those from the analytical method. It is concluded that the radial resonance frequency for a solid metal rod is larger than that for a metal tube with the same outer radius. The radial resonance frequencies from the analytical method are in good agreement with those from the numerical method. Based on the acoustic field analysis, it is concluded that the long metal tube with small wall thickness is superior to that with large wall thickness in producing radial vibration and ultrasonic radiation. Therefore, it is expected to be used as an effective radial ultrasonic radiator in ultrasonic sewage treatment, ultrasonic antiscale and descaling and other ultrasonic liquid handling applications.

The influence of piezoceramic stack location on nonlinear behavior of Langevin transducers

Power ultrasonic applications such as cutting, welding, and sonochemistry often use Langevin transducers to generate power ultrasound. Traditionally, it has been proposed that the piezoceramic stack of a Langevin transducer should be located in the nodal plane of the longitudinal mode of vibration, ensuring that the piezoceramic elements are positioned under a uniform stress during transducer operation, maximizing element efficiency and minimizing piezoceramic aging. However, this general design rule is often partially broken during the design phase if features such as a support flange or multiple piezoceramic stacks are incorporated into the transducer architecture. Meanwhile, it has also been well documented in the literature that power ultrasonic devices driven at high excitation levels exhibit nonlinear behaviors similar to those observed in Duffing-type systems, such as resonant frequency shifts, the jump phenomenon, and hysteretic regions. This study investigates three Langevin transducers with different piezoceramic stack locations by characterizing their linear and nonlinear vibrational responses to understand how the stack location influences nonlinear behavior.
