Target detection in diagnostic ultrasound: Evaluation of a method based on the CLEAN algorithm

Point detection in textured ultrasound images

Detection of point scatterers in textured ultrasound images can be challenging. This paper investigates how four multilook methods can improve the detection. We analyze many images with known point scatterer locations and randomly textured backgrounds. The normalized matched filter (NMF) and multilook coherence factor (MLCF) methods are normalized methods that do not require any texture correction prior to detection analysis. They are especially propitious when optimal texture correction of the ultrasound images is difficult to obtain. The results show significant improvement in detection performance when the MLCF method is weighted with the prewhitened and texture corrected image. The method can be applied even when we do not have prior knowledge about the optimal prewhitening limits. The multilook methods NMF and NMF weighted (NMFW) are very favorable methods to apply on images where acoustic noise dominates the speckle background.

CTIMS: Automated Defect Detection Framework Using Computed Tomography

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is one of the inspection techniques used in industrial tool inspection for quality and safety control. It is performed mainly using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) to scan the internal structure of the tools and detect the potential defects. In this paper, we propose a new toolbox called the CT-Based Integrity Monitoring System (CTIMS-Toolbox) for automated inspection of CT images and volumes. It contains three main modules: first, the database management module, which handles the database and reads/writes queries to retrieve or save the CT data; second, the pre-processing module for registration and background subtraction; third, the defect inspection module to detect all the potential defects (missing parts, damaged screws, etc.) based on a hybrid system composed of computer vision and deep learning techniques. This paper explores the different features of the CTIMS-Toolbox, exposes the performance of its modules, compares its features to some existing CT inspection toolboxes, and provides some examples of the obtained results.

Review of Non-Destructive Civil Infrastructure Evaluation for Bridges: State-of-the-Art Robotic Platforms, Sensors and Algorithms

The non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of civil infrastructure has been an active area of research in recent decades. The traditional inspection of civil infrastructure mostly relies on visual inspection using human inspectors. To facilitate this process, different sensors for data collection and techniques for data analyses have been used to effectively carry out this task in an automated fashion. This review-based study will examine some of the recent developments in the field of autonomous robotic platforms for NDE and the structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridges. Some of the salient features of this review-based study will be discussed in the light of the existing surveys and reviews that have been published in the recent past, which will enable the clarification regarding the novelty of the present review-based study. The review methodology will be discussed in sufficient depth, which will provide insights regarding some of the primary aspects of the review methodology followed by this review-based study. In order to provide an in-depth examination of the state-of-the-art, the current research will examine the three major research streams. The first stream relates to technological robotic platforms developed for NDE of bridges. The second stream of literature examines myriad sensors used for the development of robotic platforms for the NDE of bridges. The third stream of literature highlights different algorithms for the surface- and sub-surface-level analysis of bridges that have been developed by studies in the past. A number of challenges towards the development of robotic platforms have also been discussed.

Data fusion for automated non-destructive inspection

In industrial non-destructive evaluation (NDE), it is increasingly common for data acquisition to be automated, driving a recent substantial increase in the availability of data. The collected data need to be analysed, typically necessitating the painstaking manual labour of a skilled operator. Moreover, in automated NDE a region of an inspected component is typically interrogated several times, be it within a single data channel due to multiple probe passes, across several channels acquired simultaneously or over the course of repeated inspections. The systematic combination of these diverse readings is recognized to offer an opportunity to improve the reliability of the inspection, but is not achievable in a manual analysis. This paper describes a data-fusion-based software framework providing a partial automation capability, allowing component regions to be declared defect-free to a very high probability while readily identifying defect indications, thereby optimizing the use of the operator's time. The system is designed to applicable to a wide range of automated NDE scenarios, but the processing is exemplified using the industrial ultrasonic immersion inspection of aerospace turbine discs. Results obtained for industrial datasets demonstrate an orders-of-magnitude reduction in false-call rates, for a given probability of detection, achievable using the developed software system.
