Inverse design of high-Q wave filters in two-dimensional phononic crystals by topology optimization

Second Harmonic Modulation for Ultrasonic Signals Based on the Design of the Phononic Crystal Filter

Nonlinear ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) is a widely used method for detecting micro-damages in various materials and structures due to its high sensitivity and directional capability. However, the extraction and modulation of extremely weak nonlinear ultrasonic signals is quite a challenge in practical applications. Therefore, this paper focuses on the second harmonic modulation signal method in nonlinear ultrasonic NDT and proposes the design of the phononic crystal filter (PC filter) to achieve this filtering function. Through finite element simulations, it is demonstrated that the filtering frequency of the filter is influenced by the structural configuration, material wave speed, and geometric characteristics. Then, the design method for cubic PC filters is established. Furthermore, a time-domain finite element method is introduced to verify the filtering ability of the filter and further validate the rationality of this design approach.

Design and Optimization of a Novel SAW Gyroscope Structure Based on Amplitude Modulation with 1-D Phononic Crystals

Surface acoustic wave gyroscopes (SAWGs), as a kind of all-solid-state micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes, can work normally under extremely high-impact environmental conditions. Among the current SAWGs, amplitude-modulated gyroscopes (AMGs) are all based on the same gyro effect, which was proved weak, and their sensitivity and intensity of the output are both lower than frequency-modulated gyroscopes (FMGs). However, because FMGs need to process a series of frequency signals, their signal processing and circuits are far less straightforward and simple than AMGs. In order to own both high-sensitivity and simple signal processing, a novel surface acoustic traveling wave gyroscope based on amplitude modulation is proposed, using one-dimensional phononic crystals (PCs) in this paper. In view of its specific structure, the proposed gyroscope consists of a surface acoustic wave oscillator and a surface acoustic wave delay line within a one-dimensional phononic crystal with a high-Q defect mode. In this paper, the working principle is analyzed theoretically through the partial wave method (PWM), and the gyroscopes with different numbers of PCs are also designed and studied by using the finite element method (FEM) and multiphysics simulation. The research results demonstrate that under a 1 V oscillator voltage output, the higher sensitivity of −23.1 mV·(rad/s)⁻¹ in the linear range from −8 rad/s to 8 rad/s is reached when the gyro with three PC walls, and the wider linear range from −15 rad/s to 17.5 rad/s with the sensitivity of −6.7 mV·(rad/s)⁻¹ with only one PC wall. Compared with the existing AMGs using metal dots to enhance the gyro effect, the sensitivity of the proposed gyro is increased by 15 to 112 times, and the linear range is increased by 4.6 to 186 times, even without the enhancement of the metal dots.

Optimal Designs of Phononic Crystal Microstructures Considering Point and Line Defects

In this paper, a two-stage optimization strategy for designing defective unit cells of phononic crystal (PnC) to explore the localization and waveguide states for target frequencies is proposed. In the optimization model, the PnC microstructures are parametrically described by a series of hyperelliptic curves, and the optimal designs can be obtained by systematically changing the designable parameters of hyperellipse. The optimization contains two individual processes. We obtain the configurations of a perfect unit cell for different orders of band gap maximization. Subsequently, by taking advantage of the supercell technique, the defective unit cells are designed based on the unit cell configuration for different orders of band gap maximization. The finite element models show the localization and waveguide phenomenon for target frequencies and validate the effectiveness of the optimal designs numerically.

Achieving directional propagation of elastic waves via topology optimization

This paper presents a study on topology optimization of novel material microstructural configurations to achieve directional elastic wave propagation through maximization of partial band gaps. A waveguide incorporating a periodic-microstructure material may exhibit different propagation properties for the plane elastic waves incident from different inlets. A topology optimization problem is formulated to enhance such a property with a gradient-based mathematical programming algorithm. For alleviating the issue of local optimum traps, the random morphology description functions (RMDFs) are introduced to generate random initial designs for the optimization process. The optimized designs finally converge to the orderly material distribution and numerical validation shows improved directional propagation property as expected. The utilization of linear two-dimension phononic crystal with efficient partial band gap is suitable for directional propagation with a broad frequency range.
