Abstract
The classic N-wire phantom has been widely used in the calibration of freehand ultrasound probes. One of the main challenges of the phantom is accurately identifying N-fiducials in ultrasound images, especially with multiple N-wire structures. In this study, a method using a multilayer N-wire phantom for the automatic spatial calibration of ultrasound images is proposed. All dots in the ultrasound image are segmented, scored, and classified according to the unique geometric features of the multilayer N-wire phantom. A recognition method for identifying N-fiducials from the dots is proposed for calibrating the spatial transformation of the ultrasound probe. At depths of 9, 11, 13, and 15 cm, the reconstruction error of 50 points is 1.24 ± 0.16, 1.09 ± 0.06, 0.95 ± 0.08, 1.02 ± 0.05 mm, respectively. The reconstruction mockup test shows that the distance accuracy is 1.11 ± 0.82 mm at a depth of 15 cm.

Abstract
The anisotropic resolution of linear arrays, tools that are widely used in diagnostics, can be overcome by compounding approaches. We investigated the ability of a recently developed calibration and a novel algorithm to determine the actual radial transducer array distance and its misalignment (tilt) with respect to the center of rotation in a 2-D and 3-D tomographic setup. By increasing the time-of-flight accuracy, we force in-phase summation during the reconstruction. Our setup is composed of a linear transducer and a rotation and translation axis enabling multidimensional imaging in ultrasound and photoacoustic mode. Our approach is validated on phantoms and young mice ex vivo. The results indicate that application of the proposed analytical calibration algorithms prevents image artifacts. The spatial resolution achieved was 160 and 250 μm in photoacoustic mode of 2-D and 3-D tomography, respectively.

Abstract
Tracking the position and orientation of a 3-D ultrasound transducer has many clinical applications. Tracking requires calibration to find the transformation between the tracking sensor and the ultrasound coordinates. Typically the set of image slice data are scan converted to a Cartesian volume using assumed motor geometry and a single transformation to the sensor. We propose, instead, the calibration of individual slices using a 2-D calibration technique. A best fit to a subset of slices is performed to decrease data collection time compared with that for calibration of all slices, and to reduce the influence of random errors in individual calibrations. We compare our technique with four scan conversion-based techniques: 2-D N-wire on the center slice, N-wire using a 3-D volume, N-wire using a 3-D volume including the edge points and a new closed-form planar method using a 3-D volume. The proposed multi-slice technique produced the smallest point reconstruction error (0.82 mm using a tracked stylus).

Abstract
We study displacement and strain measurement error of dual transducers (two linear arrays, aligned orthogonally and coplanar). Displacements along the beam of each transducer are used to obtain measurements in two-dimensions. Simulations (5MHz) and experiments (10MHz) are compared to measurements with a single linear array, with and without angular compounding. Translation simulations demonstrate factors of 1.07 larger and 8.0 smaller biases in the axial and lateral directions respectively, for dual transducers compared to angular compounding. As the angle between dual transducers decreases from 90° to 40°, for 1% compression simulations, the lateral RMS error ranges from 2.1 to 3.9μm compared to 9μm with angular compounding. Simulation of dual transducer misalignment of 1mm and 2° result in errors of less than 9μm. Experiments demonstrate factors of 3.0 and 5.2 lower biases for dual transducers in the axial and lateral directions respectively compared to angular compounding.
