Eu-doped ZnO nanoparticles: Sonochemical synthesis, characterization, and sonocatalytic application

Plant-mediated synthesis of silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles with high sonocatalytic activity: Sonocatalytic behavior, kinetic and thermodynamic study

Together with the rapid growth of technology, the discharge of wastewater from industry into environment had become a hot topic among society nowadays. More attention had been given to the development of water treatment techniques. In this study, sonocatalysis was proposed to degrade the organic pollutants using silver-doped zinc oxide (Ag-ZnO) nanoparticles which were synthesized via green synthesis process using Clitoria ternatea Linn (Asian Pigeonwings flower). The characterization results revealed that the incorporation of Ag into the ZnO lattice decreased the crystallite size and increased the specific surface area of ZnO nanoparticles. It is noteworthy that about 98% of sonocatalytic degradation efficiency of malachite green (MG) was successfully achieved within 30 min in the presence of 5 wt.% Ag-ZnO with 1.0 g/L of catalyst loading under 500 mg/L of initial dye concentration, 80 W of ultrasonic power, 45 kHz of ultrasound frequency, and 2.0 mM of oxidant concentration. The kinetic study showed that the sonocatalytic degradation of organic dye was fitted well into second-order kinetic model with high R2 value (0.9531). In the thermodynamic study, negative value of standard Gibbs free energy and low value of activation energy (+ 24.43 kJ/mol) were obtained in the sonocatalytic degradation of MG using the green-synthesized Ag-ZnO sample. Nanoparticle-Based Photothermal Therapy for Breast Cancer Noninvasive Treatment

Rapid advancements in materials science and nanotechnology, intertwined with oncology, have positioned photothermal therapy (PTT) as a promising noninvasive treatment strategy for cancer. The breast's superficial anatomical location and aesthetic significance render breast cancer a particularly pertinent candidate for the clinical application of PTT following melanoma. This review comprehensively explores the research conducted on the various types of nanoparticles employed in PTT for breast cancer and elaborates on their specific roles and mechanisms of action. The integration of PTT with existing clinical therapies for breast cancer is scrutinized, underscoring its potential for synergistic outcomes. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying PTT and consequential modifications to the tumor microenvironment after treatment are elaborated from a medical perspective. Future research directions are suggested, with an emphasis on the development of integrative platforms that combine multiple therapeutic approaches and the optimization of nanoparticle synthesis for enhanced treatment efficacy. The goal is to push the boundaries of PTT toward a comprehensive, clinically applicable treatment for breast cancer.

An overview on ZnO-based sonophotocatalytic mitigation of aqueous phase pollutants

Over the past several decades, the increase in industrialization provoked the discharge of harmful pollutants into the environment, affecting human beings and ecosystems. ZnO-based photocatalysts seem to be the most promising photocatalysts for treating harmful pollutants. However, fast charge carrier recombination, photo corrosion, and long reaction time are the significant factors that reduce the photoactivity of ZnO-based photocatalysts. In order to enhance the photoactivity of such photocatalysts, a combined process i.e., sonocatalysis + photocatalysis = sonophotocatalysis was used. Sonophotocatalysis is one of several different AOP methods that have recently drawn considerable interest, as it produces high reactive oxygen species (ROS) which helps in the oxidation of pollutants by acoustic cavitation. This combined technique enhanced the overall efficiency of the individual method by overcoming its limiting factors. The current review aims to present the theoretical and fundamental aspects of sonocatalysis and photocatalysis along with a detailed discussion on the benefits that can be obtained by the combined process i.e., US + UV (sonophotocatalysis). Also, we have provided a comparison of the excellent performance of ZnO to that of the other metal oxides. The purpose of this study is to discuss the literature concerning the potential applications of ZnO-based sonophotocatalysts for the degradation of pollutants i.e., dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, phenols, etc. That are carried out for future developments. The role of the produced ROS under light and ultrasound stimulation and the degradation mechanisms that are based on published literature are also discussed. In the end, future perspectives are suggested, that are helpful in the development of the sonophotocatalysis process for the remediation of wastewater containing various pollutants.

Antibacterial action and target mechanisms of zinc oxide nanoparticles against bacterial pathogens

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are one of the most widely used nanoparticulate materials due to their antimicrobial properties, but their main mechanism of action (MOA) has not been fully elucidated. This study characterized ZnO NPs by using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Antimicrobial activity of ZnO NPs against the clinically relevant bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the Gram-positive model Bacillus subtilis was evaluated by performing resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) after exposure to the ZnO NPs at concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.4 mM. Sensitivity was observed at 0.6 mM for the Gram-negative and 1.0 mM for the Gram-positive cells. Fluorescence microscopy was used to examine the interference of ZnO NPs on the membrane and the cell division apparatus of B. subtilis (amy::pspac-ftsZ-gfpmut1) expressing FtsZ-GFP. The results showed that ZnO NPs did not interfere with the assembly of the divisional Z-ring. However, 70% of the cells exhibited damage in the cytoplasmic membrane after 15 min of exposure to the ZnO NPs. Electrostatic forces, production of Zn²⁺ ions and the generation of reactive oxygen species were described as possible pathways of the bactericidal action of ZnO. Therefore, understanding the bactericidal MOA of ZnO NPs can potentially help in the construction of predictive models to fight bacterial resistance.

Photocatalytic degradation of Penicillin G in aqueous solutions: Kinetic, degradation pathway, and microbioassays assessment

The photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical micropollutants of Penicillin G (PG) was investigated in a photoreactor at a laboratory scale. The impact of type of catalyst, pH, and initial concentration of PG were studied. Maximum removal efficiency was obtained at pH = 6.8, [ZnO]₀ = 0.8 g L^-1, and [PG]₀ = 5 mg L^-1 and reaction time of 150 min. The addition of persulfate sodium (PPS) enhanced the efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction. The efficiency of photolysis process in the presence of PPS was significantly improved to 72.72% compared to the classical photocatalysis system (56.71%). Optimum concentration of PPS to completely degraded PG was found to be 500 mg L^-1. The QuEChERS extraction, GC-MS/MS method, and concentration technique showed favorable performance identification of the possible mechanism of PG degradation pathway. Toxicity of PG and its by-products were evaluated using microbioassays assessment based on nine selected bacterial strains. Results confirmed the effectiveness of the implemented system and its safe use via the bacteria Bacillus subtilis, which has illustrated significant activity. Due to the high efficiency, facility benefits, and low-cost of the suggested process, the process can be considered for the degradation of various pharmaceutical contaminants in pharmaceutical industry treatment under the optimal conditions.

Ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on europium-grafted ZnO quantum dots for visual and colorimetric detection of tetracycline

An europium functionalized ZnO quantum dots (QDs) ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe is designed to establish a real time, on-site visual, and highly sensitive probe method for tetracycline (TC). The yellow-emitting ZnO QDs serves as the internal reference, while the Eu³⁺ chelated on the surface of ZnO QDs is used as the signal reporting unit. This nanoprobe exhibits rapid response, excellent selectivity, and high sensitivity with a detection limit of 4 nM in detecting the levels of TC. In addition, fluorescence of the nanoprobe can change from yellow to red as the concentration of TC increases. Thus, naked eye detection of TC was realized using the test paper processed by nanoprobe, followed by RGB value analysis function on the mobile phone APP.

Degradation of amoxicillin with sono, photo, and sonophotocatalytic oxidation under low-frequency ultrasound and visible light

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds in aquatic bodies is a global concern, and suitable treatment technologies are required. In this study, the efficacy of photocatalytic, sonocatalytic, and sonophotocatalytic oxidation processes for the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) was investigated using visible light with N doped TiO₂ (N-TiO₂) nanoparticles as the catalyst and low-frequency ultrasound in a novel multifrequency reactor. The influence of different operational parameters on the extent of AMX degradation was studied. Sonophotocatalytic oxidation was found more efficient for AMX degradation when compared to photocatalysis or sonocatalysis alone, and may be due to the reduced bandgap of the catalyst, enhanced cavitation effect due to the presence of the solid catalyst, and improved mass transfer of pollutants. AMX degradation during sono, photo, and sonophotocatalytic oxidation processes was in good agreement with pseudo-first-order kinetics. Empirical kinetic models were also developed using multiple linear regression for predicting the degradation efficiency accounting for the operational parameters. Scavenger experiments suggested that ^•OH radicals largely contributed to AMX degradation, and a plausible mechanism for degradation was proposed. Further, possible degradation pathways for all three treatment processes are also proposed after identifying the degradation products.

Development of sonophotocatalytic process for degradation of acid orange 7 dye by using titanium dioxide nanoparticles/graphene oxide nanocomposite as a catalyst

In the present study, the sonophotocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) dye was evaluated. The catalyst used was the titanium dioxide nanoparticles/graphene oxide (TiO₂/GO) nanocomposite, which was synthesized using the Hummers and Hoffman's method and the liquid phase deposition method. TiO₂/GO nanocomposite was characterized through the analyses of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In addition, properties of the surface area and pore size were determined by N₂ adsorption-desorption and the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda methods. After modification, the nanocomposite properties showed successful stabilization of TiO₂ on the graphene substrate and reduction of the recombinant carrier loads. By utilizing the proposed treatment, complete degradation of AO7 could be achieved under optimal operating parameters (pH = 5, initial concentration of AO7 dye = 50 mg/L, TiO₂/GO nanocomposite dose = 0.5 g/L, UV light intensity = 36 W, ultrasonic wave intensity = 35 kHz, and reaction time = 30 min). Scavenging experiments confirmed that OH and h⁺ radicals were the predominant species in the sonophotocatalytic degradation reactions of the AO7 dye. The stability study confirmed the excellent shelf life of the TiO₂/GO nanocomposite, with only a slight reduction in the degradation efficiency of the AO7 dye (<8.27%) detected, after six consecutive cycles of the sonophotocatalytic process. Studies related to the degradability of the AO7 dye and the biodegradability of the effluent from the process showed that the applied sonophotocatalytic system was able to remove the TOC concentration by 83% after a reaction time of 30 min. Moreover, the increase in the BOD₅/COD ratio was also a confirmation for the increase in biodegradability of the treated AO7 dye effluent. Finally, the toxicity test showed that the growth inhibition rate of Escherichia coli (E. coli), as a viability index, decreased to about 7.34% after a reaction time of 180 min. This result indicated the formation of compounds with low toxicity and molecular weight over the reaction time of the sonophotocatalytic process of AO7 dye.

Sonochemical Synthesis, Characterization and Optical Properties of Tb-Doped CdSe Nanoparticles: Synergistic Effect between Photocatalysis and Sonocatalysis

In this study, Tb-doped CdSe nanoparticles with variable Tb³⁺ content were synthesized by a simple sonochemical technique. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The sono-photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared specimens were assessed for the degradation of Reactive Black 5. The experimental results show that the sono-photocatalytic process (85.25%) produced a higher degradation percentage than the individual sono- (22%) and photocatalytic degradation (8%) processes for an initial dye concentration and Tb-doped CdSe dosage of 20 mg/L and 1 g/L, respectively. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to assess model and optimize the impacts of the operational parameters, namely, the Tb³⁺ content, initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, and time. The addition of benzoquinone results in remarkably inhibited degradation and the addition of ammonium oxalate reduced the removal percentage to 24%. Superoxide radicals and photogenerated holes were detected as the main oxidative species.

Fast, Low-Cost Synthesis of ZnO:Eu Nanosponges and the Nature of Ln Doping in ZnO

A low-cost template-free solution chemical route to highly porous nanocrystalline sponges of ZnO-EuO_1.5 with 0-5 mol % Eu is presented. The process uses Zn- and Eu-acetate-nitrate and triethanolamine as precursors in methanol. After evaporation of the solvent and heating at 200 °C for 3 min, crystalline ZnO:Eu sponges with minor amounts of organic residues were obtained. Heating to 400 °C replaced the organics with carbonate, which in its turn was decomposed at temperatures below 600 °C, forming ZnO:Eu sponges. Samples heated to 200-1000 °C for 3 min were studied with XRD, SEM, TEM, TG, XPS, and IR spectroscopy. The ZnO:Eu crystallite sizes could be tuned from below 10 nm for sponges prepared at 200-500 °C, to over 100 nm range at 900 °C, without sintering of the overall microstructure. XRD showed the presence of hexagonal ZnO:Eu (or at 700-1000 °C, ZnO:Eu and cubic Eu₂O₃) as the only phases present. The ZnO:Eu had slightly larger unit cell dimensions than the literature value of ZnO for samples obtained at 200-600 °C, while the unit cells of samples obtained at higher temperatures were quite close to the value of undoped ZnO. XPS showed that Eu was mainly in its 3+ state and well-distributed within the sponges but segregated at the ZnO sponge surface upon heating at 700-1000 °C, in accordance with XRD studies showing Eu₂O₃ formation.

Fabrication of black TiO2−x/CuFe2O4 decorated on diatomaceous earth with enhanced sonocatalytic activity for ibuprofen mitigation

This study reports facile fabrication of black TiO_2−x/CuFe₂O₄ (Ti³⁺ self-doped titania coupled with copper ferrite), an efficient sonocatalyst for ibuprofen (IBP) mitigation.

Oxygen-rich bismuth oxychloride Bi12O17Cl2 materials: construction, characterization, and sonocatalytic degradation performance

In this study, a series of oxygen-rich bismuth oxychloride Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂ samples were prepared at different calcination temperatures and characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, scanning electron microscope, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The calcination temperature greatly affected microstructures and band structures of as-prepared samples, further influencing sonocatalytic degradation efficiencies over dye Rhodamine B. Some dependant factors such as ultrasonic power, catalyst dosage, pH value, initial concentration of Rhodamine B, and reaction temperature were systematically investigated and the robust sample Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂-550 with a favorable microstructure and band structure provided the best sonocatalytic removal efficiency around 90% at the optimal condition. Based upon reactive species entrapping and hydroxyl radical detection experiments, a primary sonocatalysis mechanism was eventually speculated.
