Sonochemical synthesis of high-performance Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH electrocatalyst by galvanic replacement toward ethanol oxidation in alkaline media

Utilizing an Integrated Flow Cathode-Membrane Filtration System for Effective and Continuous Electrochemical Hydrodechlorination

Pd-based electrodes are recognized to facilitate effective electrochemical hydrodechlorination (EHDC) as a result of their superior capacity for atomic hydrogen (H*) generation. However, challenges such as electrode stability, feasibility of treating complex matrices, and high cost associated with electrode synthesis hinder the application of Pd-based electrodes for EHDC. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by EHDC employing Pd-loaded activated carbon particles, prepared via a simple wet-impregnation method, as a flow cathode (FC) suspension. Compared to other Pd-based EHDC studies, a much lower Pd loading (0.02-0.08 mg cm-2) was used. Because of the excellent mass transfer in the FC system, almost 100% 2,4-DCP was hydrodechlorinated to phenol within 1 h. The FC system also showed excellent performance in treating complex water matrices (including hardness ion-containing wastewater and various other chlorinated organics such as 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and trichloroacetic acid) with a relatively low energy consumption (0.26-1.56 kW h m-3 mg-1 of 2,4-DCP compared to 0.32-7.61 kW h m-3 mg-1 of 2,4-DCP reported by other studies). The FC synthesized here was stable over 36 h of continuous operation, indicating its potential suitability for real-world applications. Employing experimental investigations and mathematical modeling, we further show that hydrodechlorination of 2,4-DCP occurs via interaction with H*, with no role of direct electron transfer and/or HO•-mediated processes in the removal of 2,4-DCP.

Photocatalytic degradation of remdesivir nucleotide pro-drug using [Cu(1-methylimidazole)4(SCN)2] nanocomplex synthesized by sonochemical process: Theoretical, hirshfeld surface analysis, degradation kinetic, and thermodynamic studies

The first ultrasonic synthesis of [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] (L = 1-methylimidazole) nanocomplex was carried out under ultrasonic irradiation, and its photocatalytic performance for the degradation of remdesivir (RS) under sunlight irradiation was comprehensively investigated for the first time in this study. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized photocatalyst were examined by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The band gap of the synthesized [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex was determined to be 2.60 eV by the diffuse reflectance spectroscopy method using Kubelka-Munk formula. The photocatalytic performance of nanocomplex was examined for the removal of remdesivir under sunlight from water for which the results indicated that an amount of 0.5 gL^-1 of the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex was sufficient to remove more than 96% remdesivir from its 2 mg L^-1 concentration within 20 min, at pH = 6. The kinetic data showed that the photodegradation onto the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex has a high correlation (0.98) with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The decrease in chemical oxygen demand (COD) (from 70.5 mg L^-1 to 36.4 mg L^-1) under optimal conditions clearly confirmed the mineralization of the RS drug. The values of ΔS° (-0.131 kJ mol^-1 K^-1) and ΔH° (-49.750 kJ mol^-1) were negative, indicating that the adsorption process was spontaneous and more favorable in lower temperatures. Moreover, the RS structure in the open shell state and the high HOMO and LUMO gaps based on the M06/6-31 + G (d) level of theory may be a confirmation of this fact. In addition, the Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA) of the crystal packing of the prepared complex was discussed in detail to evaluate the interactions between the crystal packings. The results of this study confirm that the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex can be successfully used for the photodegradation of pharmaceutical contaminants.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles by sonogalvanic replacement on aluminium powder in sodium polyacrylate solutions

The process of the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via the method of galvanic replacement (GR) of Ag⁺ with aluminum powder in sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) solutions in the ultrasonic (US) field has been studied. It was observed, that the yellow colloidal solutions of stabilized AgNPs with the absorption maximum at ∼ 410 nm were obtained under the application of US power by 20 W and frequency by 20 kHz in the wide range of AgNO₃ and NaPA concentrations (0.1 - 0.5 mM and 0.5 - 5.0 g/L respectively) at 25 ⁰C. It was shown, that the GR process under US field occurs without of the significant induction period. Using the UV-vis spectroscopy the kinetics of AgNPs formation has been studied and it was observed the first order kinetics with respect to Ag⁺ ions both for the nucleation and growth processes. It was found that observable rate constants of nucleation are close for the all experimental conditions but the observable rate constants of growth decreased with increasing of initial concentration of AgNO₃. Based on the obtained kinetic data it was proposed a mechanism of the formation of AgNPs consisted of the following two main stages: 1) the nucleation with the formation of primary nanoclusters (AgNCs) on aluminum surface followed by their ablation from the surface of the sacrificial metal by ultrasound into bulk of solution; 2) the transformation of AgNCs in AgNPs via growth from the Al surface and / or agglomeration of AgNCs. Using TEM it was found that the size of obtained AgNPs does not exceed of 25 nm and slightly depends on the initial concentrations of precursors. High antimicrobial activity of obtained colloidal solutions against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria as well as against fungi was observed.

Designing New Material Based on Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Cu(OH)2–Cu2O/Polypyrrole Catalyst for Ethanol Oxidation in Alkaline Medium

In this work, copper(II) hydroxide (Cu(OH)2) and copper oxide (Cu2O) nanostructures are deposited on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polypyrrole to report an efficient electrocatalyst for ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium. In the first step, the deposition of functionalized multi-walled nanotubes of carbon (F-MWCNTs) on the electrode surface was carried out using drop casting mode followed by the electrodeposition of polypyrrole (PPy) and copper nanoparticles (Cu-Nps) using galvanostatic mode. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed in order to study the morphology and the structure of the elaborated catalysts. Electrochemical characterization conducted by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that the introduction of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes enhances the electric properties of the nanocomposites and offers a large active surface area. The prepared electrocatalyst was then tested in a solution of 0.1 M NaOH containing 0.2 M of ethanol showing high performance (7 mA cm−2 at 0.85 V vs Ag/AgCl) and good stability (over 1800 s) toward ethanol oxidation.

Synthesis of Antibacterially ActiveSilver Nanoparticles by Galvanic Replacement on Magnesium in Solutions of Sodium Polyacrylate in an Ultrasound

“Green” synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by a galvanic replacement (GR) on magnesium in solutions of sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) under ultrasound (42 kHz) is reported. The mechanism of combined action of GR and ultrasound on the formation of nanoparticles is proposed. Synthesized solutions of AgNPs are characterized by an absorption maximum at 410 nm, the value of which does not depend on the concentrations of precursors (AgNO3 and NaPA) and the duration of the process. The dimensions of nanoparticles that have a spherical shape do not exceed 30 nm. With increasing concentration of surfactant, there is a tendency to decrease in size. The rate of synthesis of AgNPs increases almost in proportion to the concentration of AgNO3 in the solution, while the effect of NaPA concentration is negligible. The synthesized nanoparticles efficiently demonstrated a bactericide effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

"Green" Synthesis of Metallic Nanoparticles by Sonoelectrochemical and Sonogalvanic Replacement Methods

The main features of the “green” synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) by the sonoelectrochemical methods are manufacturability, environmental friendliness, and the possibility of controlling the geometry of the forming particles. The electrochemical reduction technique allows efficiently designing the metal nanoparticles and provides the control of the content of components of bimetallic nanoparticles, as well as minimizing the number of precursors in working solutions. Due to the generation of turbulence, microjets, and shock waves, ultrasound increases mass transfer and formation of radicals in aqueous solutions and, accordingly, accelerates the processes of nucleation and growth of MNPs. Therefore, this hybrid method, which combines electrolysis and ultrasound, has attracted the interest of researchers in the last two decades as one of the most promising techniques. The present work presents a short analysis of the reference literature on sonoelectrochemical synthesis of metallic and bimetallic nanoparticles. The main factors influencing the geometry of nanoparticles and their size distribution are analyzed. The use of pulsed ultrasound and pulsed current supply during sonoelectrochemical synthesis is especially effective in designing MNPs. Emphasis is placed on the role of surfactants in the formation of MNPs and sacrificial anodes in providing the algorithm: “anodic dissolution-electrochemical reduction of metal-nucleation and formation of МNPs.” It is noted that ultrasound allows synthesizing the MNPs and M₁M₂NPs during the galvanic replacement, and an analogy of the formation of nanoparticles by sonogalvanic replacement and sonoelectrochemical method is shown.

The unique Pd@Pt/C core-shell nanoparticles as methanol-tolerant catalysts using sonochemical synthesis

Over the past decades, there were a few reports on the use of sonochemical method to prepare noble metals catalysts for fuel cells. However, the synthetic processes were conducted under high frequency (200 kHz)/long reaction time in most cases. In this work, Pd and PdxPt nanoparticles were prepared by sonochemical method under low frequency (20 kHz) in a shorter time (20-40 mins). In the first time, a sequentialsonochemical synthesis was explored to achieve a core/shell structure of PdxPt nanoparticles. Consequently, the unique core-shell structure was formed with two shells surrounding the Pd core. The Pd core was firstly grown. In the second step, the Pd²⁺ ion existing in the Pd core reduced simultaneously with Pt⁴⁺ ion in the solution as the first layer of PdPt alloy. Further, the Pt layer was formed subsequently. The Pd-based catalysts exhibited a superior ORR selective activity and exceptional methanol-tolerance property compared with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. In 0.5 M CH₃OH + 0.5MH₂SO₄ solution, the best performance was achieved on Pd₃Pt/C catalyst with increased overpotential of 24 mV. However, overpotentials was increased 174 mV on commercial Pt/C catalyst. The excellent performance of the Pd₃Pt/C catalyst is ascribed to its combination of preferable growth of the Pd (1 1 1) plane, small particle size (∼4 nm), unique core/shell structure as well as the electronic effects between Pd and Pt. These results have demonstrated that the sequential ultrasonic synthesis is an effective method for the synthesis of binary/trinary catalysts in a green approach.
