Numerical simulation of the coalescence of two bubbles in an ultrasound field

Removal of surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles by ultrasonic cavitation in microfluidics

Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles are known for their resistance to external forces. This study experimentally and theoretically investigates their response to strong ultrasonic fields. Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles with contact radii from 2 μm to 20 μm are generated in a microchannel and exposed to ultrasound through a vibrating glass substrate. At a driving frequency over 200 kHz up to 2 MHz tested, no significant response from the micro- and nanobubbles is observed. By contrast, at 100 kHz-200 kHz, ultrasonic cavitation bubbles appear in the microchannel and migrate toward the surface micro- and nanobubbles. Then the surface micro- and nanobubbles merge with the ultrasonic cavitation bubbles, detach from the substrate, and become free gaseous nuclei susceptible to further cavitation. Notably, the removal process leaves no observable residue. Theoretical analysis suggests that the directional migration of cavitation bubbles is driven by mutual acoustic radiation forces. This work demonstrates that ultrasonic fields can effectively remove surface micro- and nanobubbles, transforming them into free gaseous cavitation nuclei.

Techno-economic comparative assessment of the ultrasound, electrostatic and microwave supported coalescence of binary water droplets in crude oil

In this study, comparative assessment of the technical performance, energy usage and economic impact of ultrasound, electrostatics and microwave on the coalescence of binary water droplets in crude oil was conducted. The effect of different oil properties such as crude oil viscosity (10.6-106 mPa s) and interfacial tension (IFT) (20-250 mN/m) on the coalescence time and energy consumption was examined. In addition, operation conditions such as inlet emulsion flow velocity (10-100 mm/s), electric field type, ultrasound frequency and applied voltage amplitude (0-30 kV) were evaluated. The numerical models showed good agreement with experimental findings in the literature. Moreover, the process time of the dewatering process increased with rising inlet flow velocities. The elevation of the coalescence time with velocity can be attributed to the increasing effect of flow disturbance, and the reduction of the emulsion residence time. As regards the IFT, the coalescence time reduced as the IFT was increased. This can be associated with the improved stability of emulsions formed at lowered IFT. As the maximum droplet size is directly proportional to the IFT, lowering the IFT reduces the peak diameter of the droplets that are present in the emulsion. Moreover, the coalescence time followed the order: ultrasound < microwave < electrostatics approaches under varying IFT. The coalescence energy increased from ∼15 J, ∼90 J and ∼25 mJ to ∼61 J, ∼235 J and ∼26 mJ for microwave, electrostatics and ultrasound techniques, respectively, as the viscosity was raised from 10.6 to 106 mPa s. Ultrasound coalescence showed significant energy and economic savings in comparison to microwave and electro-coalescence. Hence, ultrasound coalescence would be a potential method for standalone or integrated demulsification over the two other techniques. However, there are indications that beyond a viscosity of 300 mPa s, the effect of ultrasound becomes weak with significant hindrance to droplet movement and accumulation. This analysis provides fundamental insights on the comparative behavior of the three emulsion separation techniques.

Numerical assessment of ultrasound supported coalescence of water droplets in crude oil

In this study, a numerical assessment of the coalescence of binary water droplets in water-in-oil emulsion was conducted. The investigation addressed the effect of various parameters on the acoustic pressure and coalescence time of water droplets in oil phase. These include transducer material, initial droplet diameter (0.05-0.2 in), interfacial tension (0.012-0.082 N/m), dynamic viscosity (10.6-530 mPas), temperature (20-100 °C), US (ultra sound) frequency (26.04-43.53 kHz) and transducer power (2.5-40 W). The materials assessed are lead zirconate titanate (PZT), lithium niobate (LiNbO₃), zinc oxide (ZnO), aluminum nitride (AlN), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and barium titanate (BaTiO₃). The numerical simulation of the binary droplet coalescence showed good agreement with experimental data in the literature. The US implementation at a fixed frequency produced enhanced coalescence (t = 5.9-8.5 ms) as compared to gravitational settling (t = 9.8 ms). At different ultrasound (US) frequencies and transducer materials, variation in the acoustic pressure distribution was observed. Possible attenuation of the US waves, and the subsequent inhibitive coalescence effect under various US frequencies and viscosities, were discussed. Moreover, the results showed that the coalescence time reduced across the range of interfacial tensions which was considered. This reduction can be attributed to the fact that lower interfacial tension produces emulsions which are relatively more stable. Hence, at lower interface tension between the water and crude oil, there was more resistance to the coalescence of the water droplets due to their improved emulsion stability. The increment of the Weber number at higher droplet sizes leads to a delay in the recovery of the droplet to spherical forms after their starting deformation. These findings provide significant insights that could aid further developments in demulsification of crude oil emulsions under varying US and emulsion properties.

The enhancement of DNA fragmentation in a bench top ultrasonic water bath with needle-induced air bubbles: Simulation and experimental investigation

Shearing DNA to a certain size is the first step in many medical and biological applications, especially in next-generation gene sequencing technology. In this article, we introduced a highly efficient ultrasonic DNA fragmentation method enhanced by needle-induced air bubbles, which is easy to operate with high throughput. The principle of the bubble-enhanced sonication system is introduced and verified by flow field and acoustic simulations and experiments. Lambda DNA long chains and mouse genomic DNA short chains are used in the experiments for testing the performance of the bubble-enhanced ultrasonic DNA fragmentation system. Air bubbles are an effective enhancement agent for ultrasonic DNA fragmentation; they can obviously improve the sound pressure level in the whole solution, thus, achieving better absorption of ultrasound energy. Growing bubbles also have a stretched function on DNA molecule chains and form a huge pressure gradient in the solution, which is beneficial to DNA fragmentation. Purified λDNA is cut from 48.5 to 2 kbp in 5 min and cut to 300 bp in 30 min. Mouse genomic DNA (≈1400 bp) decreases to 400 bp in 5 min and then reduces to 200 bp in 30 min. This bubble-enhanced ultrasonic method enables widespread access to genomic DNA fragmentation in a standard ultrasonic water bath for many virus sequencing demands even without good medical facilities.

Precise micro-particle and bubble manipulation by tunable ultrasonic bottle beams

This paper reports a method to generate tunable bottle beams using an ultrasonic lens, by which the bottle position can be precisely adjusted with the change of the acoustic frequency. Therefore, the position of a single particle or bubble in liquid can be manipulated without using phased array which is costly and huge with complex circuits. Furthermore, we introduced this method to multiple bubble manipulation using acoustic holography. The bottle properties against frequency are theoretically and experimentally analyzed. It is shown that the bottle position depends almost linearly on the operating frequency, which provides a basis for the precise manipulation of bubbles and particles. In addition, the relationship between the acoustic radiation force and the drag force under different incident acoustic pressures is considered, establishing a limit on the moving velocity of the trapped particles. The ultrasonic field observation is further demonstrated by Schlieren imaging system. The proposed method has potential biomedical applications, such as more flexible cell manipulation and targeted drug delivery in vivo, as well as potential applications in the study of chemical reactions between micro objects.

Recent advances in applications of power ultrasound for petroleum industry

Power ultrasound, as an emerging green technology has received increasing attention of the petroleum industry. The physical and chemical effects of the periodic oscillation and implosion of acoustic cavitation bubbles can be employed to perform a variety of functions. Herein, the mechanisms and effects of acoustic cavitation are presented. In addition, the applications of power ultrasound in the petroleum industry are discussed in detail, including enhanced oil recovery, oil sand extraction, demulsification, viscosity reduction, oily wastewater treatment and oily sludge treatment. From the perspective of industrial background, key issue and resolution mechanism, current applications and future development of power ultrasound are discussed. In addition, the effects of acoustic parameters on treatment efficiency, such as frequency, acoustic intensity and treatment time are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and outlook for industrial application of power ultrasound are discussed.

Nonlinear dynamics of a cavitation bubble pair near a rigid boundary in a standing ultrasonic wave field

The dynamics of a micrometer-sized bubble pair in water near a rigid boundary under standing ultrasonic wave excitation is investigated in this study. The viscous effect in the boundary layer at the air-water interface is considered following the viscous correction model. The evolution of the bubble surface at the collapsing stage of the bubble pair is presented for different parameter sets. The field pressure near the rigid boundary, which is induced by the oscillating bubble pair, and the high-speed water jet at the collapse stage, form the main focus of the analysis. This reveals that a horizontal configuration of the bubble pair retards the strength of the bubble jet towards the boundary, whilst a vertical configuration, especially with differently-sized bubbles, can enhance the bubble collapse. This study may help to understand the interaction of multiple bubbles in an acoustic field and its application to surface cleaning.

Rectified Diffusion of Gas Bubbles in Molten Metal during Ultrasonic Degassing

In the present paper, an analytical solution of rectified diffusion of processes of gas bubbles in molten metal is derived for the purpose of predicting the diffusion behaviors of gas bubbles during ultrasonic degassing. In the present model, a theoretical threshold (in terms of the amplitude of the applied ultrasonic field) is determined for the evaluation of the ultrasonic degassing effects. The diffusion of hydrogen bubbles in molten aluminum is predicted, so as to provide examples to illustrate the important findings of the present work.
