Prospects, advances and biological applications of MOF-based platform for the treatment of lung cancer

Nowadays in our society, lung cancer is exhibiting a high mortality rate and threat to human health. Conventional diagnostic techniques used in the field of lung cancer often necessitate the use of extensive instrumentation, exhibit a tendency for false positives, and are not suitable for widespread early screening purposes. Conventional approaches to treat lung cancer primarily involve surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, these broad-spectrum treatments suffer from drawbacks such as imprecise targeting and significant side effects, which restrict their widespread use. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer owing to their tunable electronic properties and structures and potential applications. These porous nanomaterials are formed through the intricate assembly of metal centers and organic ligands, resulting in highly versatile frameworks. Compared to traditional diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, MOFs can improve the sensitivity of lung cancer biomarker detection in the diagnosis of lung cancer. In terms of treatment, they can significantly reduce side effects and improve therapeutic efficacy. Hence, this perspective provides an overview concerning the advancements made in the field of MOFs as potent biosensors for lung cancer biomarkers. It also delves into the latest research dealing with the use of MOFs as carriers for drug delivery. Additionally, it explores the applications of MOFs in various therapeutic approaches, including chemodynamic therapy, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Furthermore, this review comprehensively analyses potential applications of MOFs as biosensors in the field of lung cancer diagnosis and combines different therapeutic approaches aiming for enhanced therapeutic efficacy. It also presents a concise overview of the existing obstacles, aiming to pave the way for future advancements in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Removal of p-Nitrophenol by Adsorption with 2-Phenylimidazole-Modified ZIF-8

Petrochemical wastewater contains p-nitrophenol, a highly toxic, bioaccumulative and persistent pollutant that can harm ecosystems and environmental sustainability. In this study, ZIF-8-PhIm was prepared for p-nitrophenol removal from petrochemical wastewater using solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) with 2-phenylimidazole(2-PhIm). The ZIF-8-PhIm's composition and structure were characterised using the XRD, SEM, FT-IR, ¹H NMR, XPS and BET methods. The adsorption effect of ZIF-8-PhIm on p-nitrophenol was investigated with the static adsorption method. Compared to the ZIF-8 materials, ZIF-8-PhIm exhibited stronger π-π interactions, produced a multistage pore structure with larger pore capacity and size, and had increased hydrophilicity and exposure of adsorption sites. Under optimised conditions (dose = 0.4 g/L, T = 298 K, C₀ = 400 mg/L), ZIF-8-PhIm achieved an adsorption amount of 828.29 mg/g, which had a greater p-nitrophenol adsorption capacity compared to the ZIF-8 material. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models appropriately described the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions dominated the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. It also had relatively good regeneration properties.

Optimized CO2 Capture of the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework ZIF-8 Modified by Solvent-Assisted Ligand Exchange

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks, like ZIF-8 and related structures, have shown great potential for the capture of carbon dioxide. Modifying their structure by exchanging part of the constituent organic ligands is a proven method for enhancing the capacity to absorb CO₂. In this work, we performed solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) on nanosized ZIF-8 (nZIF-8) with a series of functionalized imidazole derivatives (exchange percentages, after 24 h): 2-bromoimidazole (19%), 2-chloroimidazole (29%), 2-trifluoromethylbenzimidazole (4%), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (4%), and 2-nitroimidazole (54%). The sodalite topology and porosity of nZIF-8 were maintained with all SALE modifications. Low-pressure CO₂ adsorption of nZIF-8 (38.5 cm³ g^-1) at STP was appreciably enhanced with all mixed-linker SALE products. Using halogenated (-Cl, -Br, and -CF₃) imidazole derivatives in a 24 h SALE treatment resulted in increases between 11 and 22% in CO₂ adsorption, while the thiol (-SH)- and nitro (-NO₂)-functionalized SALE products led to 32 and 100% increases in CO₂ uptakes, respectively. These CO₂ uptakes were further optimized by varying the SALE treatment time. The SHbIm- and NO₂Im-exchanged SALE products of nZIF-8 show 87 and 98 cm³ g^-1 of CO₂ uptakes after 60 and 120 h of SALE, respectively. These are record high CO₂ adsorptions for all reported ZIF derivatives at low-pressure conditions.
