The role of the particle size reduction and morphological changes of solid substrate in the ultrasound-aided enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose

Environment friendly emerging techniques for the treatment of waste biomass: a focus on microwave and ultrasonication processes

In the recent past, an increasing interest is mostly observed in using microwave and ultrasonic irradiation to aid the biological conversion of waste materials into value-added products. This study is focused on various individual impacts of microwaves and ultrasonic waves for the treatment of biomass before the synthesis of value-added products. Following, a comprehensive review of the mechanisms governing microwaves and ultrasonication as the treatment methods, their effects on biomass disruption, solubilization of organic matter, modification of the crystalline structure, enzymatic hydrolysis and production of reducing sugars was performed. However, based on the lab-scale experiments evaluated, microwaves and ultrasonication were studied to be economically and energetically ineffective despite their beneficial effects on the waste biomass. This article reviews some of the difficulties associated with using microwaves and ultrasonic irradiation for the efficient processing of waste biomasses and identified some potential directions for future study.

Effects of Mixing and Particle Size on the Kinetics and Dynamics of Enzymatically Treated Cotton Cellulose (MCC) in Continuous Flow Reactor

Enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) of cellulosic biomass needs tremendous technological advancement so as to efficiently convert cellulosic biomass into renewable fuels and commodity chemicals. Therefore, development of highly improved process engineering techniques is inevitable to reduce the processing cost of the fluids in the reactor. In this investigation, effect of mixing and particle size on the EH of microcrystalline cotton cellulose (MCC) has been investigated by using a spatially averaged low-dimensional two-mode mixing (TMM) model. The model simulations were carried out for the average particle sizes of MCC ranging from 0.78 to 25.52 μm and mixing speed of η → 0 (very high) to η → 1000 (very low). The effects of mixing and particle size on the formation of glucose and reducing sugar (RS) have been quantified by exploiting the rigorous multistep reaction kinetics and TMM model. To access the bond-breaking ability, its effects on the degree of polymerization (DP) was also analyzed. The results deduced that increase in mixing limitations and reduction in particle size imparts a significant increase in glucose and RS yield while decreasing the DP drastically. Thus, our simulations reveal that while η → 1000 economizes the process by reducing the energy requirements, reduction in particle size can be beneficial for reducing the residence time in the depolymerization of MCC to fuels and chemicals.

Effects of ultrasound assisted cell wall disruption on physicochemical properties of camellia bee pollen protein isolates

Camellia bee pollen protein isolates were extracted by cell wall disruption using ultrasonication, freeze-thawing, enzymatic hydrolysis, and their combinations. The effects of these methods on microstructure of cell wall, protein release, protein yield, physiochemical properties and structure of proteins were investigated. As compared with physical treatments (ultrasonication, freeze-thawing and their combination), the enzymatic hydrolysis significantly improved the yield of proteins, because it not only promoted the release of proteins from the inside of pollen, but also released proteins in pollen wall. The proteins extracted by enzymatic hydrolysis method also exhibited better solubility, emulsifying and gelation properties due to the partial hydrolysis of proteins by protease. In addition, when ultrasound was combined with freeze-thawing or enzymatic hydrolysis, it could further improve the yield of proteins and the functional properties of proteins, which was mainly related to the changes of protein structure induced by cavitation effect of ultrasound.
