Sonochemical decomposition effects of nickelocene aiming for low-temperature and dispersant-free synthesis of nickel fine particle

Sonochemical decomposition effects of nickelocene, which sublimates easily were investigated to synthesize dispersant-free nickel fine particles at low temperature. In a hydrazine monohydrate and 2-propanol mixed solvent, the reduction of nickelocene was promoted by ultrasound irradiation, and nickel fine particles were synthesized while precluding the sublimation of nickelocene. Unlike the common hydrazine reduction of nickel salts, which requires multiple-step reactions, nickelocene was reduced directly without forming intermediates. The effect of the water-bath temperature (20-60 °C) was investigated, where larger fine particles were synthesized using a higher water-bath temperature (60 °C). When irradiated at 20 °C, the reduction rate of nickelocene was low, leading to the formation of nickel fine particles and organic nanoparticles via the reduction and decomposition of nickelocene. The ultrasound frequency was also investigated, where fine nickel particles were synthesized using low-frequency ultrasound irradiation. The formation of high-temperature hotspots led to the diffusion and growth of nickel on the surface of the nickel fine particles; therefore, raspberry-like nickel fine particles were synthesized. In this study, the difficult-to-handle nature of nickelocene, owing to its sublimation properties, was easily overcome by ultrasound irradiation. Instantaneous and localized reactions at hotspots contributed to inhibiting particle growth. Furthermore, Ni fine particles were synthesized via a direct reduction pathway, which differs from previous reactions. This method represents a new, dispersant-free, low-temperature process for synthesizing Ni fine particles.

Ultrasound-Assisted Preparation and Performance Regulation of Electrocatalytic Materials

With the advancement of scientific research, the introduction of external physical methods not only adds extra freedom to the design of electro-catalytical processes for green technologies but also effectively improves the reactivity of materials. Physical methods can adjust the intrinsic activity of materials and modulate the local environment at the solid-liquid interface. In particular, this approach holds great promise in the field of electrocatalysis. Among them, the ultrasonic waves have shown reasonable control over the preparation of materials and the electrocatalytic process. However, the research on coupling ultrasonic waves and electrocatalysis is still early. The understanding of their mechanisms needs to be more comprehensive and deep enough. Firstly, this article extensively discusses the adhibition of the ultrasonic-assisted preparation of metal-based catalysts and their catalytic performance as electrocatalysts. The obtained metal-based catalysts exhibit improved electrocatalytic performances due to their high surface area and more exposed active sites. Additionally, this article also points out some urgent unresolved issues in the synthesis of materials using ultrasonic waves and the regulation of electrocatalytic performance. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed, providing new insights for improving the catalytic performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

Ultrasonic liquid exfoliation for producing graphene materials from rice stem: Investigating cellular components and functionalities

This study investigates a prospective and straightforward method for producing graphene material derived from biomass, examining the influence of plant cell composition and functions. The experimental outcomes highlight ultrasound's crucial role in synthesizing graphene material sourced from biomass. Ultrasound, a pivotal element in the experiment, significantly affects graphene production from biomass by working synergistically with the liquid components in the solvent system. Notably, the ethanol content reduces the solution's surface tension, facilitating the effective dispersion of biochar and graphene oxide sheets throughout the process. Simultaneously, the water content maintains the solution's polarity, enhancing the cavitation effect induced by ultrasound. Biomass-derived graphene is exfoliated utilizing an ultrasonic bath system (134.4 W, 40 kHz, 0.5 W/cm2) from biochar. The as-synthesized graphene oxide exhibits a structure comprising a few layers while remaining intact, featuring abundant functional groups. Interestingly, the resulting product displays nanopores with an approximate diameter of 100 nm. These nanopores are attributed to preserving specific cell structures, particularly those with specialized cell wall structures or secondary metabolite deposits from biomass resources. The study's findings shed light on the impact of cellular structure on synthesizing graphene material sourced from biomass, emphasizing the potential application of ultrasound as a promising approach in graphene production.
