Fast g-C3N4 sonocoated activated carbon for enhanced solar photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants through Adsorb & Shuttle process

Graphite/carbon-doped TiO2 nanocomposite synthesized by ultrasound for the degradation of diclofenac

Graphite/C-doped TiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized at room temperature using a simple, impressive, and indirect sonication (20 kHz) by the cup horn system. Tetrabutyltitanate as the precursor of titanium and graphite (G) as the carbon source was used in the preparation of nanocomposite as a photocatalyst. The molar ratio of G/TiO2 as a key parameter was investigated in the synthesis of G/C-doped TiO2. The obtained materials were widely characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance techniques. The UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that the edge of light absorption of nanocomposite was distinctly red-shifted to the visible area via carbon doping. The XPS outcomes acknowledged the existence of the C, Ti, and O in the photocatalyst. The composite showed an enhancement in the dissociation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers through the doping process. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposite was checked with diclofenac (DCF) as a pharmaceutical contaminant. The results displayed that G/C-doped TiO2 represented better photocatalytic performance for DCF than TiO2. This was due to the excellent crystallization, intense absorption of visible light, and the impressive separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Various active species such as •OH, •O2¯, h+, and H2O2 play a role in the degradation of DFC. Therefore, different scavengers were used and the role of each one in degradation was investigated. According to the obtained results, •O2¯ radical showed a major role in the photocatalytic process. This work not only proposes a deep insight into the photosensitization-like mechanism by using G-based materials but also develops new photocatalysts for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from waters using sunlight as available cheap energy.

Magnetic-acoustic actuated spinous microrobot for enhanced degradation of organic pollutants

A growing interest in the development of efficient strategies for the removal of organic pollutants from polluted water is emerging. As such, artificial micro/nano machines performing excellent water purification tasks have recently attracted more research attention of scientists. Hereby a spinous Fe3O4@PPy microrobot is presented that towards an efficient organic pollutant removal by enhancing Fenton-like reaction. The microrobot is fabricated by wrapping polypyrrole (PPy) on a spiny magnetic template prepared from sunflowers pollen. Modulating the sound pressure and frequency of the ultrasonic field enables the Fe3O4@PPy microrobot to present multimode motion, such as violent eruption-like motion caused by local cavitation (ELM), march-like unific motion (MLM), and typhoon-like rotation toward the center gathered motion (TLM). This multimode motion achieves the sufficient locomotion of microrobots in three-dimensional space and effective contact with organic pollutants in polluted water. Furthermore, a 5.2-fold increase in the degradation rate of methylene blue has been realized using Fe3O4@PPy microrobots under low-concentration hydrogen peroxide conditions. Also, the magnetically controlled recovery of microrobots from water after the completion of the degradation task has been demonstrated. The magnetic-acoustic actuated spinous microrobot can be extrapolated to other catalytic microrobot, developing a new strategy for an easier implementation and recovery of microrobot in real applications of water purification.

Effects of alcohols and dissolved gases on sonochemical generation of hydrogen in a 300 kHz sonoreactor

The sonochemical generation of hydrogen (H2) was investigated using various water/alcohol solutions under argon (Ar) 100 % in a 300 kHz sonoreactor. Five types of alcohols-methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol-were used at various concentrations (0 - 100 % v/v). The H2 generation rate in water was 0.31 μmol/min in the absence of alcohols. The H2 generation rate increased, peaked, and then decreased as the alcohol concentration increased. The concentrations used for the peak H2 generation were 5 %, 1 %, 0.5 %, 0.5 %, and 0.1 % for methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol, respectively. The highest generation rate (5.46 μmol/min) was obtained for methanol 5 % among all conditions in this study, and no H2 was detected for 100 % alcohol concentrations. The reason for the enhancement of the sonochemical H2 generation by the addition of alcohols might be due to strong scavenging effect of alcohols for sonochemically generated oxidizing radicals and vigorous reactions of alcohol molecules and their derivatives with H radicals. No significant correlations were found between the H2 generation rates and physicochemical properties of the alcohols in any of the data in this study. As alcohol concentration increased, the calorimetric power decreased. This indicates that the calorimetric power does not represent the degree of sonochemical reactions in the water/alcohol mixtures. The effect of oxygen (O2) content in the dissolved gases on the generation of H2O2 (representing sonochemical oxidation activity) and H2 (representing sonochemical reduction activity) was investigated using Ar/O2 mixtures for water, methanol 5 % and n-propanol 0.5 %. In water, the highest H2O2 generation was obtained for Ar/O2 (50:50), which is similar to previous research results. However, the H2O2 generation increased as the O2 content increased. In addition, H2 generation decreased as the O2 content increased under all liquid conditions (water, methanol, and n-propanol).

Photocatalytic degradation performance of antibiotics by WO3/α-Fe2O3/zeolite type II heterojunction with core-shell structure

The accumulation of antibiotics in the environment can be harmful to human health, and research on their disposal technologies is of increasing interest. In this study, WO3/α-Fe2O3/zeolite (WFZ) type II heterojunction composites with core-shell structures were prepared by coupling WO3 semiconductors with visible-light photocatalytic activity with α-Fe2O3 via hydrothermal synthesis using zeolite as a carrier for the adsorption of synergistic photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in wastewater. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), specific surface, and porosity measurements were used to characterize the structure of WFZ type II heterojunction. The performance of WFZ heterojunction for the visible photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics (tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF)) was investigated. Through four photocatalytic cycles, the catalyst exhibited excellent durability and stability. This was attributed to the core-shell structure and type II heterojunction promoting the effective separation of photogenerated carriers and the extended visible light response range, which resulted in the best photocatalytic activity of the catalyst under visible light irradiation. Radical trapping experiments showed that superoxide radicals (•O2-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were the main active species that played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation. These findings show that the synthesized WFZ type-II heterojunction can be used as a reliable visible-light-responsive photocatalyst for the treatment of antibiotics in wastewater.
