Abstract
Sarcoids are among the most common tumors diagnosed in equids; their association with bovine papillomaviruses (BPV) infection has been widely reported, but the mechanism of carcinogenesis has not been fully elucidated. To verify whether BPV infection causes dysregulation of the pRb-Cyclin D1-p16CDKN2A-p53 pathway as reported for human papillomavirus (HPV), the study employed immunohistochemistry to test 55 equine sarcoid biopsies for the expression of pRb, Cyclin D1, and p53 cell cycle regulatory proteins and to evaluate the proliferative rate through Ki67. High Cyclin D1 and pRb expression were observed in 51% and 80% of cases, respectively, while low expression was observed in 49% and 20% of cases, respectively. Significantly higher Ki67 proliferation indexes were observed in fibroblastic, nodular, and mixed sarcoids compared to the occult and verrucous. High proliferation was significantly associated with high Cyclin D1 expression. In contrast with previous studies, p53 positivity was not observed in the cases examined in this study. Moreover, follow-up analysis revealed that fibroblastic, mixed sarcoids were associated with significantly higher local recurrence rates while the verrucous subtype was associated with higher rates of new sarcoid development at distant sites.

Abstract
Thirty-one bovine cutaneous warts were submitted to macroscopic and histological analyses and to molecular analyses to partial amplification and sequencing of the L1 gene of bovine papillomavirus (BPV). Viral types detected were BPV1 (52%), BPV2 (29%), BPV6 (16%) and BPV10 (3%). BPV2 had lower frequency in papilloma in comparison to that in fibropapilloma (p = 0.002).

Abstract
In the last decades, a group of viruses has received great attention due to its
relationship with cancer development and its wide distribution throughout the
vertebrates: the papillomaviruses. In this article, we aim to review some of the most
relevant reports concerning the use of bovines as an experimental model for studies
related to papillomaviruses. Moreover, the obtained data contributes to the
development of strategies against the clinical consequences of bovine
papillomaviruses (BPV) that have led to drastic hazards to the herds. To overcome the
problem, the vaccines that we have been developing involve recombinant DNA
technology, aiming at prophylactic and therapeutic procedures. It is important to
point out that these strategies can be used as models for innovative procedures
against HPV, as this virus is the main causal agent of cervical cancer, the second
most fatal cancer in women.

Genomic characterization of a novel Epsilonpapillomavirus associated with pigmented papillomas in a red deer (Cervus elaphus). Virus Genes 2016; 52:633-9. Abstract
Two of a group of 15 farmed European red (Cervus elaphus elaphus) X wapiti (C. e. canadensis) deer stags developed multiple persistent pigmented squamous papillomas (warts) on their chins. DNA was extracted from a papilloma and a short section of DNA from a novel papillomavirus (PV) was amplified. This short sequence was used to design 'outward facing' primers to amplify the remainder of the circular PV DNA. The PCR product was sequenced using next-generation sequencing and the full genome of the PV, consisting of 8082 bp, was assembled and analysed. The novel PV was designated Cervus elaphus papillomavirus (CePV) type 2. The putative coding regions of CePV2 were predicted to produce four early and two late proteins with two other potential ORFs also noted. Phylogenetic analysis of ORF L1 revealed greater than 60 %, but less than 70 % similarity, to Bos taurus papillomavirus (BPV) types -5 and -7. As both BPV5 and BPV7 are Epsilonpapillomavirus 1, CePV2 is proposed as the first Epsilonpapillomavirus 2 PV type. This is the first EpsilonPV to be identified in a non-bovine species and the first non-DeltaPV to be identified as a cause of disease in any deer species.

Abstract
Bovine papillomaviruses (BPVs) are small DNA tumoral viruses able to induce benign cutaneous and/or mucosal epithelial lesions. Generally, the benign tumours affecting the skin or mucosa spontaneously regress, but under special circumstances, the defence system may be overwhelmed, thus leading to cancer, especially in the presence of immunosuppressant and mutagen agents from bracken fern. To date, thirteen different BPV genotypes have been associated with skin and mucosal tumours in cattle, and out of these, only four types (BPV-1, -2, -5 and -13) cross-infect other species. Recent investigations in vivo have revealed new insights into the epidemiology and pathogenesis of this viral infection. This review briefly discusses viral epidemiology, will give data on BPV genome structure and viral genes and will describe the cellular events and new aspects of both cutaneous and mucosal tumours in large ruminants. Finally, some aspects of active immunization will be described.

Abstract
Ten types of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) have been described and there are reports of viral transmission via blood. The presence of viral DNA in lymphocytes was described to be associated with chromosome instability in these cells. This study presents an evaluation of chromosome instability in short-term peripheral lymphocyte cultures from cows presenting skin papillomatosis, compared with asymptomatic infected animals and non-infected healthy bovines. In a total of 2203 cells, 918 (42%) showed at least one chromosome aberration: 42.7 (± 7.8) in animals with papillomatosis (BPV + W), 40.2 (± 11) in asymptomatic animals (BPV-W) and 4 (± 2) in control animals. Significant differences were found between the infected group (with or without symptoms) and the control group (P < 0.0001). The increased frequencies of chromosome aberrations suggest an interaction between the virus and host cell chromatin.

Abstract
The novel human oncogene hWAPL is associated with uterine cervical cancer. The HPV16 E5 oncoprotein could induce genomic instability in normal human cells. However, the mechanism of E5 interaction with hWAPL still awaits definition. In our present studies, the eukaryotic expression plasmids, pcDNA3-hWAPL and pcDNA3-hWAPL-E5 were constructed and carried out to vaccinate mice directly. The result that indicated the polyclonal antibody titer in immunized mice sera was increased by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, the proliferative responses of immunized mice spleen cells showed the optical densities values in vaccinated group remarkably higher than that in the control group. In conclusion, the recombinant plasmids could induce strong humoral and cellular immune response and exhibited great potential as therapeutic targets in the treatment of cervical cancer. However, the result didn't show significant difference in group with coexpression of HPV16 E5-hWAPL and group with only hWAPL expression. Consistent with these observations, we demonstrated that HPV16 E5 was not the optimal factor to cooperate with hWAPL in gene therapy.
