Large eye-head gaze shifts measured with a wearable eye tracker and an industrial camera

We built a novel setup to record large gaze shifts (up to 140∘ ). The setup consists of a wearable eye tracker and a high-speed camera with fiducial marker technology to track the head. We tested our setup by replicating findings from the classic eye-head gaze shift literature. We conclude that our new inexpensive setup is good enough to investigate the dynamics of large eye-head gaze shifts. This novel setup could be used for future research on large eye-head gaze shifts, but also for research on gaze during e.g., human interaction. We further discuss reference frames and terminology in head-free eye tracking. Despite a transition from head-fixed eye tracking to head-free gaze tracking, researchers still use head-fixed eye movement terminology when discussing world-fixed gaze phenomena. We propose to use more specific terminology for world-fixed phenomena, including gaze fixation, gaze pursuit, and gaze saccade.

Peripheral Vision in Patients Following Intraocular Lens Implantation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

PURPOSE

To update the literature on peripheral optics and vision following intraocular lens (IOLs) implantation.

METHODS

We investigated how current IOLs influence peripheral visual function, peripheral optical quality, and visual perception and performance, in patients following cataract surgery. Peripheral vision is described as vision outside the central foveal region of the eye (beyond 4-5° of eccentricity). We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and gray literature for relevant references. Randomized controlled trials and observational studies were eligible for inclusion. Finally, 47 studies with a total of 5963 participants were eligible for this review, of which 15 were included in the meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Regarding visual fields, the meta-analysis showed that the pooled estimate of mean deviation (MD) measured with perimetry tests (standard automated perimetry [SAP], short-wavelength automated perimetry [SWAP], and frequency doubling technology [FDT]) appears to be lower than the mean of healthy age-matched controls, regardless of IOL design. Results for pooled estimate show that localized defects (pattern standard deviation [PSD]) were higher than those in the healthy age-matched controls for FDT. We also collected evidence demonstrating that pseudophakia increases peripheral astigmatism and a myopic shift from 20° onward, leading to decreased peripheral image quality compared with that in phakic eyes. Patient-reported outcomes on peripheral vision showed a pooled score estimate of 95.19, indicating high satisfaction, and for the Steps & Stairs questions, a pooled score estimate at 0.23, indicating no to little difficulty seeing steps and stairs.

CONCLUSIONS

Peripheral image quality is degraded in eyes after cataract surgery. Nevertheless, whether this degradation leads to impaired visual function in the periphery requires further investigation.

Head Turn During Visual Field Testing to Minimize the Influence of Prominent Facial Anatomy

BACKGROUND

Facial contour naturally decreases the visual field. Peripheral visual field defects caused by facial anatomy and ocular pathology can be missed in a routine standard of care. Mathematically calculating the true angle for turning the head to optimize the peripheral visual field has not been studied to date. The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of turning the head during perimetry to maximize the testable visual field.

METHODS

Six healthy study participants aged 18-52 were enrolled, prospectively; the dominant eye of each participant was tested. In total, 60-4 visual fields were obtained from each participant's dominant eye with the head in primary position. Then, the 60-4 tests were repeated with the head turned prescribed degrees toward and away from the tested eye ("manual method"). Based on a photograph of the participant's face, a convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to predict the optimal head turn angle for maximizing the field, and the test was repeated in this position ("automated method").

RESULTS

Maximal visual field exposure was found at a head turn of 15° away from the tested eye using the manual method and was found at an average head turn of 12.6° using the automated method; maximum threshold values were similar between manual and automated methods. The mean of threshold in these subjects at the standard direction and the predicted optimum direction was 1,302, SD = 69.35, and 1,404, SD = 67.37, respectively ( P = 0.02).

CONCLUSIONS

Turning the head during perimetry maximizes the testable field area by minimizing the influence of prominent facial anatomy. In addition, our CNN can accurately predict each individual's optimal angle of head turn for maximizing the visual field.

Frequency-specific and periodic masking of peripheral characters by delayed foveal input

The foveal-feedback mechanism supports peripheral object recognition by processing information about peripheral objects in foveal retinotopic visual cortex. When a foveal object is asynchronously presented with a peripheral target, peripheral discrimination performance is affected differently depending on the relationship between the foveal and peripheral objects. However, it is not clear whether the delayed foveal input competes for foveal resources with the information processed by foveal-feedback or masks it. In the current study, we tested these hypotheses by measuring the effect of foveal noise at different spatial frequencies on peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel characters. Our results showed that the impairment of foveal-feedback was strongest for low-spatial frequency noise. A control experiment revealed that for spatially overlapping noise, low-spatial frequencies were more effective than medium-spatial frequencies in the periphery, but vice versa in the fovea. This suggests that the delayed foveal input selectively masks foveal-feedback when it is sufficiently similar to the peripheral information. Additionally, this foveal masking was periodic as evidenced by behavioral oscillations at around 5 Hz. Thus, we conclude that foveal-feedback supports peripheral discrimination of familiar and novel objects by periodically processing peripheral object information.

Duration perception in peripheral vision: Underestimation increases with greater stimuli eccentricity

Duration perception plays a fundamental role in our daily visual activities; however, it can be easily distorted, even in the retinal location. While this topic has been extensively investigated in central vision, similar exploration in peripheral vision is still at an early stage. To investigate the influence of eccentricity, a commonly used indicator for quantifying retinal location, on duration perception in peripheral vision, we conducted two psychophysical experiments. In Experiment 1, we observed that the retinal location influenced the Point of Subjective Equality (PSE) but not the Weber Fraction (WF) of stimuli appearing at eccentricities ranging from 30° to 70°. Except at 30°, the PSEs were significantly longer than 416.7 ms (25 frames), which was the duration of standard stimuli. This suggested that participants underestimated duration, and this underestimation increased with greater distance from the central fixation point on the retina. To eliminate the potential interference of the central task used in Experiment 1, we conducted a supplementary experiment (Experiment 2) that demonstrated that this central task did not change the underestimation (PSE) but did influence the sensitivity (WF) at an eccentricity of 50°. In summary, our findings revealed a compressive effect of eccentricity on duration perception in peripheral vision: as stimuli appeared more peripheral on the retina, there was an increasing underestimation of subjective duration. Reasons and survival advantages of this underestimation are discussed. Findings provide new insight on duration perception in peripheral vision, highlighting an expanding compressive underestimation effect with greater eccentricity.

Optical modeling of the entire visual field of the eye

Vision is rarely evaluated scientifically at very large visual angles, despite being used continuously in everyday life. Furthermore, raytrace calculations indicate that peripheral optical properties are different for a pseudophakic eye, and even though this is rarely noted by patients, it is probably the cause of bothersome "negative dysphotopsia." Simplified paraxial parameters that characterize the basic properties of phakic and pseudophakic eyes are collected together here as a baseline, and then raytracing is used to show that input angles of about 60°, which correspond to obstruction by the nose, eyebrow, and cheek, illuminate a retinal hemisphere. At larger angles in the temporal direction, the image with an intraocular lens (IOL) reaches a limit due to vignetting at about a 90° input angle to the optical axis, in comparison to 105° with the Gullstrand-Emsley eye model, and 109° for the most realistic gradient index crystalline lens model. Scaling the far peripheral vision region more accurately may lead to benefits relating to intraocular lenses, diseases of the peripheral retina, widefield fundus images, and myopia prevention.

Focal length, EFL, and the eye

The focal length is often called the effective focal length, or efl instead, and although this is acceptable for a lens in air, it is not otherwise correct. The eye is used as an example here for an optical system where the object is in air and the image is in fluid. Welford, Aberrations of Optical Systems (1986) has paraxial equations that are consistent with historical use while also clearly defining efl. These are based on power at a surface having to be the same for light traveling in both directions (n ^'/f ^'). The focal length f ^' is the actual physical distance from the 2nd principal point to the paraxial focus, and the equivalent focal length, or efl, is the focal length divided by the image index (f ^'/n ^'). Separately, when the object is in air, the efl is shown to act at the nodal point, with the lens system represented by either an equivalent thin lens at the principal point with a focal length or a different equivalent thin lens in air at the nodal point with an efl. The rationale for using effective instead of equivalent for efl is unclear, but efl is used more as a symbol than as an acronym.

Effect of anatomical differences and intraocular lens design on negative dysphotopsia

PURPOSE

To assess the effect of ocular anatomy and intraocular lens (IOL) design on negative dysphotopsia (ND).

SETTING

DESIGN

Ray-tracing study based on clinical data.

METHODS

Ray-tracing simulations were performed to assess the effect of anatomical differences and differences in IOL design on the peripheral retinal illumination. To that end, eye models that incorporate clinically measured anatomical differences between eyes of patients with ND and eyes of pseudophakic controls were created. The anatomical differences included pupil size, pupil centration, and iris tilt. The simulations were performed with different IOL designs, including a simple biconvex IOL design and a more complex clinical IOL design with a convex-concave anterior surface. Both IOL designs were analyzed using a clear edge and a frosted edge. As ND is generally considered to be caused by a discontinuity in peripheral retinal illumination, this illumination profile was determined for each eye model and the severity of the discontinuity was compared between eye models.

RESULTS

The peripheral retinal illumination consistently showed a more severe discontinuity in illumination with ND-specific anatomy. This difference was the least pronounced, 8%, with the frosted edge clinical IOL and the most pronounced, 18%, with the clear edge biconvex IOL.

CONCLUSIONS

These results show that small differences in the ocular anatomy or IOL design affect the peripheral retinal illumination. Therewith, they can increase the severity of ND by up to 18%.

A Perception-Action Assessment of the Functionality of Peripheral Vision in Expert and Novice Australian Footballers

While widely acknowledged as being important for team-sport performance, the contribution of peripheral vision is poorly understood. This study aimed to better understand the role of far peripheral vision in team sport by exploring how domain experts and novices used far peripheral vision to support decision making and action control. Expert (n = 25) and novice (n = 23) Australian football players completed a perception-only task to assess the extent of their peripheral field. Next, they completed two sport-specific variations (response and recognition) of a "no-look" pass task that required passing a ball to a teammate who appeared in their far peripheral field. In the perception-only task, novices outperformed experts. However, in the sport-specific action response and recognition tasks, experts demonstrated superior performance as they responded to the stimulus farther from central vision and more accurately. Results demonstrate expertise effects for the use of far peripheral vision in sport.

The Value of Static Perimetry in the Diagnosis and Follow-up of Negative Dysphotopsia

SIGNIFICANCE

There is a clinical need for a quantitative test to objectively diagnose negative dysphotopsia, especially because the diagnosis is generally assessed using patients' subjective descriptions. In the search of a clinical test to objectify the shadow experienced in negative dysphotopsia, this study excludes static perimetry as suitable evaluation method.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to evaluate the value of static perimetry in the objective assessment and follow-up of negative dysphotopsia.

METHODS

Peripheral 60-4 full-threshold visual field tests were performed in 27 patients with negative dysphotopsia and 33 pseudophakic controls. In addition, 11 patients with negative dysphotopsia repeated the test after an intraocular lens exchange. Both the total peripheral visual field and the averaged peripheral visual field from 50 to 60° eccentricity were compared between patients and controls, and pre-operatively and post-operatively in patients who had an intraocular lens exchange.

RESULTS

The peripheral visual fields from 30 to 60° did not show significant differences between patients with negative dysphotopsia and pseudophakic controls. Analysis of the peripheral visual field from 50 to 60° showed a median [Q1, Q3] of 20.0 [17.1, 22.5] dB in the negative dysphotopsia group compared with 20.1 [15.5, 21.3] dB in the control group (P = .43). Although 82% of patients treated with an intraocular lens exchange subjectively reported improvement of their negative dysphotopsia complaints post-operatively, there were no significant differences in their total peripheral visual field or averaged peripheral visual field from 50 to 60° (P = .92).

CONCLUSIONS

Full-threshold static perimetry with a Goldmann size III stimulus up to 60° eccentricity does not show significant differences between patients with negative dysphotopsia and pseudophakic controls or between measurements before and after intraocular lens exchange. Therefore, this type of static perimetry cannot be used as a quantitative objective test for diagnosis or follow-up of patients with negative dysphotopsia.

Nodal points and the eye

Nodal points are defined using parallel object and image rays at very small angles to the optical axis, and Johann Listing described them when characterizing the eye in 1845. They are only distinct from principal points when there is a refractive index difference, but Reginald Clay used the term "nodal slide" in 1904 for equipment that uses lens rotation when measuring a lens focal length in air. Over time, sketches of nodal rays at large angles have become common, and these perhaps appear to support observations that input angles to the eye match image angles measured to the nodal point. Raytrace calculations confirm that this is correct for very large angles, but the relationship comes from the cornea curving around, towards incoming light, angles being rescaled at the exit pupil by a constant factor, and then the retina curving around to meet the image rays. The eye has high linearity, with 1:1 angular scaling occurring at approximately the nodal point, but ray bundles passing through the pupil center, rather than paraxial nodal rays, define the optical properties.

Creating a Remote Choir Performance Recording Based on an Ambisonic Approach

The aim of this paper is three-fold. First, the basics of binaural and ambisonic techniques are briefly presented. Then, details related to audio-visual recordings of a remote performance of the Academic Choir of the Gdansk University of Technology are shown. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, artists had a choice, namely, to stay at home and not perform or stay at home and perform. In fact, staying at home brought in the possibility of creating and developing art at home while working online. During the first months of lock-down, the audience was satisfied with music performances that were fairly far from the typical experience of a real concert hall. Then, more advanced technology was brought to facilitate joint rehearsal and performance of better quality, including multichannel sound and spatialization. At the same time, spatial music productions benefited from the disadvantage of remote rehearsal by creating immersive experiences for the audience based on ambisonic and binaural techniques. Finally, subjective tests were prepared and performed to observe performers’ attention behavior divided between the conductor and music notation in the network-like environment. To this end, eye-tracking technology was employed. This aspect is related to the quality of experience (QoE), which in the performance area–and especially in remote mode–is essential.

Postural sway in the moving room scenario: New evidence for functional dissociation between self-motion perception and postural control

Postural control in quiet standing is often explained by a reflexive response to optical flow, the apparent motion of environmental objects in a visual scene. However, moving room experiments show that even small-amplitude body sway can evoke odd sensations or motion sickness, indicating that a consciousness factor may also be involved. Studies targeting perception of self-motion, vection, typically use rapid visual stimuli moving in a single direction to maintain a constant feeling of vection, and there are few studies of vection using low-speed sinusoidal visual stimuli similar to human pendular movement. In the present study we searched for changes in postural control during periods of vection during quiet standing. Participants (N = 19, age = 20.4 ±1.1 years) were shown dynamic visual stimuli in the form of sinusoidally expanding and contracting random dots, and the stimuli speed and visual field were manipulated. Posture was continually evaluated using Center of Pressure (CoP) measurements. Participants were also asked to report feelings of vection, both by pressing a button during the trial and through an overall rating at the end of each trial. Using repeated-measures ANOVA, we assessed changes in the CoP and vection variables between experimental conditions, as well as possible interactions between the variables. The results show that postural reaction and vection were both affected by the visual stimuli and varied with speed. The peripheral visual field was found to couple to stronger feeling of vection and better quality of postural control. However, no significant relationship between postural control and vection, nor evidence of vection interaction to the relationship between optical flow and postural control, was found. Based on our results we conclude that for postural stability during quiet standing, visual cues dominate over any potential consciousness factor arising due to vection.

Temporal Visual Field Border

Purpose

The aim of the study was to determine the physiological temporal visual field border, based on theoretical calculations and by perimetric examination itself.

Materials and Methods

A perimetry test was performed on 15 healthy subjects – seven women (27–30 years old) and eight men (28–46 years old), all of whom had healthy eyes with a visual acuity value of 1.0. The visual field was evaluated using a Medmont M700 with nasal displacement of the fixation point of 40 degrees. In total, 179 examined points of visual field were included. The model of the entry of temporal rays into the eye was created on the basis of the measured biometric values of the eye and with the help of the AD systems AutoCad and SolidWorks. RayViz for SolidWorks was able to simulate the passage of light rays through the model.

Results

The temporal part of the subjective visual field border was up to 110 degrees in all eyes. Modelling of the input rays based on geometric optics in one of the participants in the testing revealed a theoretical temporal boundary of the visual field of 102 degrees.

Conclusion

Theoretical calculations of geometric optics have shown that the temporal boundary of the visual field reaches up to 102 degrees in a healthy individual. By perimetric examination, this limit reached 110 degrees.

Evaluation of intraocular lens position and retinal shape in negative dysphotopsia using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging

PURPOSE

To assess potential relationships of intraocular lens (IOL) position and retinal shape in negative dysphotopsia (ND).

SETTING

DESIGN

Case-control study.

METHODS

High-resolution ocular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were performed in patients with ND and pseudophakic controls, and subsequently used to determine the displacement and tilt of the in-the-bag IOL about the pupil and iris. In addition, anterior segment tomography was used to assess the iris-IOL distance. Furthermore, the retinal shape was quantified from the MRI scans by fitting an ellipse to the segmented inner boundary of the retina. Both the IOL position and retinal shape were compared between groups to assess their potential role in the etiology of ND.

RESULTS

In total, 37 patients with ND and 26 pseudophakic controls were included in the study. The mean displacement and tilt of the IOL were less than 0.1 mm and 0.5 degrees, respectively, in both groups and all directions. The corresponding mean iris-IOL distance was 1.1 mm in both groups. Neither of these values differed statistically significantly between groups (all P values >.6). The retinal shape showed large variations but was not statistically significantly different between the groups in both the left-right (P = .10) and the anterior-posterior (P = .56) directions.

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, the in-the-bag IOL position and retinal shape did not statistically significantly differ between patients with ND and the general pseudophakic population. Given the large variation in retinal shape between subjects, however, it could still be an important factor in a multifactorial origin of ND.

Distinct differences in anterior chamber configuration and peripheral aberrations in negative dysphotopsia

Clinical evaluations combined with ray-tracing analyses in patients with negative dysphotopsia supported the role of an increased angle κ.

Purpose:

To provide insights into the anatomical characteristics associated with negative dysphotopsia using quantitative clinical data.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands.

Design:

Case-control study.

Methods:

Anterior chamber tomography and peripheral aberrometry were measured in 27 pseudophakic patients with negative dysphotopsia and 30 pseudophakic control subjects. Based on these measurements, the total corneal power, anterior chamber depth, pupil location and diameter, iris tilt, and peripheral ocular wavefront up to 30 degrees eccentricity were compared between both groups. In addition, ray-tracing simulations using pseudophakic eye models were performed to establish a connection between these clinical measurements and current hypotheses on the etiology of negative dysphotopsia.

Results:

Twenty-seven patients with negative dysphotopsia and 25 pseudophakic controls were included in the analysis. The patients with negative dysphotopsia had a smaller (P = .03/P = <.01) and more decentered (P < .01) pupil than that of the pseudophakic controls. In addition, an increased temporal-tilted iris (P < .01) and an asymmetric peripheral aberration profile were observed in patients with negative dysphotopsia, of which the latter was also apparent in several ray-tracing models. The combination of these in vivo results and ray-tracing simulations indicated that patients with negative dysphotopsia had a temporal-rotated eye, which confirmed the hypothesized relation between negative dysphotopsia and an increased angle κ.

Conclusions:

Patients with negative dysphotopsia had a smaller pupil and an increased angle κ, which made them more susceptible to experiencing a shadow in the temporal visual field.

Scaling the Retinal Image of the Wide-Angle Eye Using the Nodal Point

Angles subtended at the second nodal point of the eye (NP2) are approximately the same as input visual angles over a very large angular range, despite the nodal point being a paraxial lens property. Raytracing using an average pseudophakic eye showed that the angular nodal point criterion was only valid up to about 10°, and that the linear relationship was due instead to the cornea and lens initially creating chief ray angles at the exit pupil that are about 0.83 times input values for this particular eye, and then by the retina curving around to meet the rays in a manner that compensates for increasing angle. This linear relationship is then also maintained when retinal intersections are calculated relative to other axial points, with angles rescaled approximately using the equation R/(R + delta), where delta is the axial distance from the center of a spherical retina of radius R. Angles at NP2 approximately match the input angles, but the terminology is misleading because this is not a paraxial property of the eye. Chief rays are used with finite raytracing to determine the actual behavior.

A review of interactions between peripheral and foveal vision

Visual processing varies dramatically across the visual field. These differences start in the retina and continue all the way to the visual cortex. Despite these differences in processing, the perceptual experience of humans is remarkably stable and continuous across the visual field. Research in the last decade has shown that processing in peripheral and foveal vision is not independent, but is more directly connected than previously thought. We address three core questions on how peripheral and foveal vision interact, and review recent findings on potentially related phenomena that could provide answers to these questions. First, how is the processing of peripheral and foveal signals related during fixation? Peripheral signals seem to be processed in foveal retinotopic areas to facilitate peripheral object recognition, and foveal information seems to be extrapolated toward the periphery to generate a homogeneous representation of the environment. Second, how are peripheral and foveal signals re-calibrated? Transsaccadic changes in object features lead to a reduction in the discrepancy between peripheral and foveal appearance. Third, how is peripheral and foveal information stitched together across saccades? Peripheral and foveal signals are integrated across saccadic eye movements to average percepts and to reduce uncertainty. Together, these findings illustrate that peripheral and foveal processing are closely connected, mastering the compromise between a large peripheral visual field and high resolution at the fovea.

Chaos in Motion: Measuring Visual Pollution with Tangential View Landscape Metrics

Visual pollution (VP) in the form of outdoor advertisements (OA) is a threat to landscape physiognomy. Despite their proven usefulness in landscape aesthetic studies, landscape metrics have not yet been applied to address the phenomenon of VP. To fill this knowledge gap, a methodological framework for the measurement of VP using tangential view landscape metrics is proposed, which is accompanied by statistically significant proofs. Raster products derived from aerial laser scanning data were used to characterize two study areas with different topographic conditions in the city of Lublin, East Poland. The visibility of the cityscape in motion was simulated through viewshed measurements taken at equal intervals in the forwards and backwards directions along pedestrian walkways. The scrutinized tangential view landscape metrics (visible area, maximum visible distance, skyline, Shannon depth, view depth line) was the object of a two-fold interpretation wherein the spatial occurrence of VP as well as its impacts on the visual landscape character (VLC) were examined. The visible area metrics were found to be highly sensitive VP indicators. The maximum visible distance metrics provided evidence for the destructive effect of OA on view corridors. The Shannon depth and depth line metrics were not found to be statistically significant indicators of VP. Results from directional viewshed modelling indicate that distortion in the analyzed cityscape physiognomy depends on the view direction. The findings allow for particular recommendations with practical implementations in land use planning, which are discussed along with limitations to our proposed methods.

'The last channel': vision at the temporal margin of the field

The human visual field, on the temporal side, extends to at least 90° from the line of sight. Using a two-alternative forced-choice procedure in which observers are asked to report the direction of motion of a Gabor patch, and taking precautions to exclude unconscious eye movements in the direction of the stimulus, we show that the limiting eccentricity of image-forming vision can be established with precision. There are large, but reliable, individual differences in the limiting eccentricity. The limiting eccentricity exhibits a dependence on log contrast; but it is not reduced when the modulation visible to the rods is attenuated, a result compatible with the histological evidence that the outermost part of the retina exhibits a high density of cones. Our working hypothesis is that only one type of neural channel is present in the far periphery of the retina, a channel that responds to temporally modulated stimuli of low spatial frequency and that is directionally selective.

Seven Myths on Crowding and Peripheral Vision

Crowding has become a hot topic in vision research, and some fundamentals are now widely agreed upon. For the classical crowding task, one would likely agree with the following statements. (1) Bouma's law can be stated, succinctly and unequivocally, as saying that critical distance for crowding is about half the target's eccentricity. (2) Crowding is predominantly a peripheral phenomenon. (3) Peripheral vision extends to at most 90° eccentricity. (4) Resolution threshold (the minimal angle of resolution) increases strongly and linearly with eccentricity. Crowding increases at an even steeper rate. (5) Crowding is asymmetric as Bouma has shown. For that inner-outer asymmetry, the peripheral flanker has more effect. (6) Critical crowding distance corresponds to a constant cortical distance in primary visual areas like V1. (7) Except for Bouma's seminal article in 1970, crowding research mostly became prominent starting in the 2000s. I propose the answer is "not really" or "not quite" to these assertions. So should we care? I think we should, before we write the textbook chapters for the next generation.

Exogeneous Spatial Cueing beyond the Near Periphery: Cueing Effects in a Discrimination Paradigm at Large Eccentricities

Although visual attention is one of the most thoroughly investigated topics in experimental psychology and vision science, most of this research tends to be restricted to the near periphery. Eccentricities used in attention studies usually do not exceed 20° to 30°, but most studies even make use of considerably smaller maximum eccentricities. Thus, empirical knowledge about attention beyond this range is sparse, probably due to a previous lack of suitable experimental devices to investigate attention in the far periphery. This is currently changing due to the development of temporal high-resolution projectors and head-mounted displays (HMDs) that allow displaying experimental stimuli at far eccentricities. In the present study, visual attention was investigated beyond the near periphery (15°, 30°, 56° Exp. 1) and (15°, 35°, 56° Exp. 2) in a peripheral Posner cueing paradigm using a discrimination task with placeholders. Interestingly, cueing effects were revealed for the whole range of eccentricities although the inhomogeneity of the visual field and its functional subdivisions might lead one to suspect otherwise.

Simulated images of intraocular lens negative dysphotopsia and visual phenomena

Simulated images were generated using an extended source to illustrate peripheral dark shadows in pseudophakic eye models. The shadows are a consequence of the intraocular lens being much smaller than the natural crystalline lens, which limits the extent of the focused image. Compensation is made for the cosine intensity falloff due to pupil obliquity, and the images are envisaged as being displayed on polar plots of visual angle corresponding to approximate retinal locations. Additional retinal illumination from light missing the lens reduces the shadow effect as the pupil diameter increases, in agreement with clinical observations. Lenses with two different cross-sectional profiles were evaluated, which both have shadows at about 85°, but with different characteristics. The iris thickness was found to affect the shadows by occluding peripheral rays. Images were also generated for a point source with a 5 mm pupil, where a double image is created for visual angles as low as 50°, which may contribute to visual phenomena at night. This type of modeling may help with patient evaluations and discussions.

The clinical relevance of visualising the peripheral retina

Recent developments in imaging technologies now allow the documentation, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of peripheral retinal lesions. As wide field retinal imaging, capturing both the central and peripheral retina up to 200° eccentricity, is becoming readily available the question is: what is it that we gain by imaging the periphery? Based on accumulating evidence it is clear that findings in the periphery do not always associate to those observed in the posterior pole. However, the newly acquired information may provide useful clues to previously unrecognised disease features and may facilitate more accurate disease prognostication. In this review, we explore the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral retina, focusing on how it differs from the posterior pole, recount the history of peripheral retinal imaging, describe various peripheral retinal lesions and evaluate the overall relevance of peripheral retinal findings to different diseases.

Iris characteristics affecting far peripheral vision and negative dysphotopsia

PURPOSE

To evaluate how the iris obstructs rays at large visual angles.

SETTING

Simpson Optics, Arlington, Texas, USA, and Spektrum Eye Clinic, Wroclaw, Poland.

DESIGN

Retrospective case study.

METHODS

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) (Visante) images were exported for normal, short, and long eyes and eyes with negative dysphotopsia. Iris characteristics were manually identified, including the maximum iris thickness and its distance from the pupil, and the gap between the iris and intraocular lens (IOL). Ray-tracing software was used for optical modeling.

RESULTS

The study comprised AS-OCT images of 63 eyes (21 normal eyes, 20 short eyes, and 19 long eyes, as well as 3 eyes with negative dysphotopsia). Preoperative and postoperative iris dimensions were similar, with a mean maximum thickness of 0.47 mm ± 0.08 (SD) at 0.94 ± 0.19 mm radially from the pupillary margin. The mean pupillary plane distance from the corneal epithelium moved from 3.23 ± 0.50 mm preoperatively to 3.99 ± 0.26 mm postoperatively, and the mean gap between the posterior iris and the IOL was 0.50 ± 0.24 mm, with a systematic increase with axial length for both parameters. The anterior iris surface obstructed light at very large angles and contributed to the limiting visual angle for rays focused by the IOL (although light from lower angles also bypassed the IOL). Models for the eyes with negative dysphotopsia had dark retinal regions between the focused image and peripheral light for small pupils.

CONCLUSIONS

Rays at very large angles can be obstructed by the anterior iris surface, which can be modeled to have a triangular profile near the pupillary margin. This limits the visual field for light focused by the IOL.
