Technologies for deodorization of malodorous gases

There is an increasing number of citizens' complaints about odor nuisance due to production or service activity. High social awareness imposes pressure on entrepreneurs and service providers forcing them to undertake effective steps aimed at minimization of the effects of their activity, also with respect to emission of malodorous substances. The article presents information about various technologies used for gas deodorization. Known solutions can be included into two groups: technologies offering prevention of emissions, and methodological solutions that enable removal of malodorous substances from the stream of emitted gases. It is obvious that the selection of deodorization technologies is conditioned by many factors, and it should be preceded by an in-depth analysis of possibilities and limitations offered by various solutions. The aim of the article is presentation of the available gas deodorization technologies as to facilitate the potential investors with selection of the method of malodorous gases emission limitation, suitable for particular conditions.

Recent advancements in the mitigation of obnoxious nitrogenous gases

Nitrogenous gaseous emissions commonly have an obnoxious odor associated with it, which when discharged into the environment results in serious environmental problems and health hazards. Several strategies for mitigation of nitrogenous odorants have been reported which include physical, chemical and biological methods. Biological treatments are widely employed because of their efficiency even at low concentration, where physical and chemical methods are not effective. Most commonly used biological treatment methods are biofiltration, biotrickling filters and membrane bioreactors with innovative reactor design, mixing pattern, and air sparging, for example FEBR, ALR, etc. These treatment methods require a critical assessment for the mitigation of obnoxious nitrogen emissions, especially in the context of environmental protection. This review offers a critical evaluation of treatment methods for the mitigation of nitrogenous odorous compound with a key emphasis on biological treatment systems. Also, various mathematical modelling techniques required for optimized operation of biotreatment systems has been discussed.

Gold and gold-iron modified zeolites--towards the adsorptive deodourisation

Zeolites exhibiting different structures (Y, Beta, and ZSM-5) were modified with gold and iron and applied for odour adsorption from the air containing dibutyl sulphide (Bu(2)S) used as a representative odour producing compound. The structure of the zeolites used determines the rate of adsorption (higher on Y type zeolites and smaller on two other zeolites), whereas hydrophilicity affects the selectivity towards Bu(2)S adsorption increasing in the order: Y<Beta<ZSM-5. For the same zeolite structure, Bu(2)S adsorption selectivity depends on the total acidity of zeolites which increases after iron modification. The texture and surface properties of the modified zeolites were studied by XRD, XPS, UV-vis, TEM, pyridine adsorption and FTIR, test reactions (acetonylacetone cyclisation, isopropanol decomposition).

Chemical indices and methods of multivariate statistics as a tool for odor classification

Industrial and agricultural off-gas streams are comprised of numerous volatile compounds, many of which have substantially different odorous properties. State-of-the-art waste-gas treatment includes the characterization of these molecules and is directed at, if possible, either the avoidance of such odorants during processing or the use of existing standardized air purification techniques like bioscrubbing or afterburning, which however, often show low efficiency under ecological and economical regards. Selective odor separation from the off-gas streams could ease many of these disadvantages but is not yet widely applicable. Thus, the aim of this paper is to identify possible model substances in selective odor separation research from 155 volatile molecules mainly originating from livestock facilities, fat refineries, and cocoa and coffee production by knowledge-based methods. All compounds are examined with regard to their structure and information-content using topological and information-theoretical indices. Resulting data are fitted in an observation matrix, and similarities between the substances are computed. Principal component analysis and k-means cluster analysis are conducted showing that clustering of indices data can depict odor information correlating well to molecular composition and molecular shape. Quantitative molecule describtion along with the application of such statistical means therefore provide a good classification tool of malodorant structure properties with no thermodynamic data needed. The approximate look-alike shape of odorous compounds within the clusters suggests a fair choice of possible model molecules.

Odour management and treatment technologies: an overview

There is a large variety of options available for the effective treatment of odorous emissions. The most important physical, chemical and biological treatment processes are shortly described and their favourable applications, as well as their limits, are highlighted. But for a sustainable solution of an industrial odour problem, there is more involved than just the installation of a waste gas treatment system. This article focuses on a general and systematic approach towards extensive odour management. First of all, an odour assessment should be worked out where all actual and potential odour emission sources are recorded and characterised. A special focus should be set on fugitive emissions, which may have an enormous impact on the overall odour problem. They need to be captured before they can be supplied to a treatment system. According to the composition and condition of the waste gases, an appropriate treatment system must be selected. For this purpose, test systems have been developed and are presented in this article.
