Utilization of sepiolite materials as a bottom liner material in solid waste landfills

Evaluating the Potential of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Modified Clay as a Landfill Liner Material

In this paper, the feasibility of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified clay as a landfill liner material is investigated. Experiments were conducted on the modified clay with 0.5%, 1%, and 2% MWCNTs. The effects of the MWCNTs on the compaction characteristics, permeability coefficient, stress-strain curve, peak deviation stress, shear strength parameters (internal friction angle and cohesion), microstructures, and adsorption performance of the clay were analyzed. The results showed that the optimum moisture content (OMC) increased from 16.15% to 18.89%, and the maximum dry density (MDD) decreased from 1.79 g/cm3 to 1.72 g/cm3 with the increase in MWCNTs. The permeability coefficients firstly fell and then gradually rose as the MWCNTs increased; the minimum permeability coefficient was 8.62 × 10-9 cm/s. The MWCNTs can also effectively increase the peak deviation stress of the clay, and at the maximum level, the peak deviation stress was increased by 286%. SEM images were processed using the Pore and Crack Analysis System (PCAS), and the results showed that the appropriate amount of MWCNTs could fill the pores and strengthen the clay structure. The effect of the MWCNT-modified clay on the adsorption performance of common heavy metal ions Cd2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ in landfill leachate was analyzed by batch adsorption tests. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Mn2+ in the 2% MWCNT-modified clay were, respectively, 41.67 mg/g, 18.69 mg/g, and 4.97 mg/g. Compared with the clay samples without MWCNTs, the adsorption properties of Cu2+, Cd2+, and Mn2+ were increased by 228%, 124%, and 202%, respectively. Overall, the results suggest that MWCNT-modified clays have the potential to be suitable barrier materials for the construction of landfills.

Bisphenol A adsorption and transport in loess and cationic surfactant/hydrophilic polymer modified bentonite liners

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic endocrine disruptor often found in landfill leachate. Adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of BPA onto organo-bentonites amended loess, e.g., Hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride-bentonite (HTMAC-B) and Carboxymethylcellulose-bentonite (CMC-B) were experimentally investigated. The adsorption capacity of loess amended by HTMAC-B (LHB) and CMC-B (LCB) is 4.2 and 4 times greater than that of loess (L), respectively. It is attributed to the increase of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic lateral interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate. The binary (Pb²⁺-BPA) systems may enhance BPA adsorption onto the samples by the formation of coordination bonds between the hydroxyl group of BPA and Pb²⁺ ions. A cycled column test was used for investigating the transport behavior of BPA in LHB and LCB samples. The hydraulic conductivity of loess amended by the organo-bentonite (e.g., HTMAC-B, CMC-B) is generally lower than 1 × 10^-9 m/s. Especially for CMC-B amended loess, the hydraulic conductivity can be reduced to 1 × 10^-12 m/s. This guarantees the hydraulic performance of the liner system. Transport behavior of BPA in cycled column test is explained by the mobile-immobile model (MIM). Modelling results showed that loess amended by organo-bentonites can increase the breakthrough time of BPA. In comparison to loess-based liner, the breakthrough time of BPA for LHB and LCB can be increased by a factor of 10.4 and 7.5, respectively. These results indicate that organo-bentonites can serve as a potentially effective amendment for improving the adsorption of loess-based liners.

Geotechnical behavior of fly ash-coal ash and bentonite clay composite as a landfill barrier material with special emphasis on desiccation cracks

Compacted clay barriers have been used to retard leakage of contaminated fluids from landfillsites. These liners may shrink, crack, desiccate and lose their integrity if the liner material doesn't have permeability (10^-9 m/s), unconfined compressive strength (UCS = 200 kPa) and no desiccation cracks at all as per the CPCB-2001 and USEPA 1989 guidelines. These three parameters form the basis of utilizing any material as a liner material however bentonite clay (BC) due to excessive desiccation cracks upon drying and wetting events can't be used individually. The usual practice to overcome failure, of barrier material the usual practice is to amend BC with sand though being costly and unsustainable. Recently, Fly ash (FA) and Coal ash (CA) byproducts from thermal power plant, have been explored as a substitute of sand in landfill liner material for sustainable practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate and and compare the various composition of B-FA and B-CA in terms of adequate strength, permeability, and shrinkage/desiccation in such a way to meet the CPCB-2001 and USEPA 1989 guidelines. The variation of specific gravity, liquid limit, plastic limit, and DFSI with varying compositions of bentonite was also studied. The present study demonstrates that with the increment of BC permeability was found to decrease and 80CA20B, 80FA20B, 80FA15B5CA combinations were meeting CPCB-2001 permeability criterion. To replicate the field condition the overburdening pressure was varied from 100 to 800 kPa and the permeability was found to be within the prescribed range for the three compositions. In total, 72 UCS, including triplicates for 7, 14 and 28 days, were conducted to see if any pozzolanic reaction was ensuingand its effect on the strength. The maximum UCS was found to be 302 kPa for 80CA20B composition while 277 kPa for 80FA20B. Strength Improvement Factor (SIF) and Mobilized peak strain factor (MPSF) were found to be maximum for the 80CA20B composition for 28 days as 1.54 and 0.44 respectively. The composition 80CA20B demonstrated better desiccation crack resistance behaviour than 80FA20B and 80FA15B5CA. The volumetric shrinkage for 80CA20B, 80FA20B and 80FA15B5CA were 4.6, 10.49 and 4.2%. Further, there were no desiccation cracks observed if the volumetric shrinkage is around 4%. The water retention behavior of all the three compositions was almost same. The microstructure analysis for morphology, compositional characterization, and thermal analysis of the various constituents was also carried out.

Characteristics and leaching behavior of MSWI fly ash in novel solidification/stabilization binders

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash has become a challenge for waste management because it is rich in heavy metals and its output is increasing sharply year by year. A novel binder system for MSWI fly ash solidification/stabilization was produced by blending MgO and silica fume in this work. And several tests including compressive strength, toxicity leaching behavior, hydration products, pore structure and micromorphology of MgO-SiO₂-H₂O (M-S-H) binders without and with MSWI fly ash were conducted. Results showed that the compressive strength of MSWI fly ash-blended samples varied from 1.8 MPa to 29.3 MPa, and the maximum leaching concentration of Pb, Zn and Cd were 0.052 mg/L, 1.02 mg/L, 0.098 mg/L, which all met the national standard limitation on the landfill site. Besides, M-S-H binders could buffer against the harsh acid environment at a certain degree, which would provide a proper low alkalinity environment for immobilization of heavy metals such as Pb, Zn and Cd in MSWI fly ash. Meanwhile, the microstructure and morphology characteristics analysis results demonstrated that the favorable ion exchange and high specific surface area of hydration product contributed much to the excellent immobilization and adsorption characteristics on heavy metals, so it can be deduced that M-S-H binders mainly fixed the heavy metals by the physical encapsulation and chemical bonding. Overall, this work demonstrated that the application potential of M-S-H as immobilization binders in the field of sustainable construction materials and hazardous waste management, and providing a new way for the development and utilization of magnesium resources.

Effects of metal stabilizers on soil hydraulic characteristics and mobility of cadmium

This study investigated the effect of typical stabilizers on hydraulic properties, immobilization, and leachate characteristics based on the diffusive gradient thin-films technique (DGT) and a leaching experiment. Three types of stabilizers were classified based on various characteristics of soil field capacity (θf), and their immobilization effects were as follows: (i) θf increased and the immobilization of Cd was achieved with nanohydroxyapatite, increasing θf by 19.36% and decreasing the bioavailable Cd by 78.84%; (ii) the increasing θf conversely inhibited cadmium stabilization. Straw biochar averagely promoted θf by 17.39%, while the stabilization was suppressed; (iii) other stabilizers (zeolite, montmorillonite, and sepiolite) had no significant effect on θf and immobilization. It is suggested that stabilization depends on chemical mechanisms and is probably also affected by hydraulic mechanisms. The first types of stabilizers formed precipitates with poor solubility, and the strong affinity of heavy metals to soil particles can account for that the increasing θf had a negligible influence on the dissolution equilibrium of the heavy metals. Attapulgite also belongs to this type. The second and third types of stabilizers primarily adsorbed cadmium through ion exchange, resulting in the relatively easy heavy metal release. Increasing θf facilitated the desorption of heavy metals in the case of the second stabilizer type. However, the inconspicuous change in θf caused by the third stabilizer type had no impact on stabilization. Moreover, Cd leaching was positively correlated with bioavailable Cd and soil permeability. Heavy metal migration induced by colloids less than 90 nm in coarse biochar treatments deserves further research.

Development of a novel base liner material for offshore final disposal sites and the assessment of its hydraulic conductivity

In the process of landfilling, leachates resulting from the waste landfill are likely to cause secondary environmental pollution, and installation of a basal liner is essential under a landfill site to block and reduce permeation of leachate flowing into the subsurface environment. The research aims to develop a salt-resistant bentonite and a novel base liner material for offshore waste disposal. The liner materials consist of core materials and coating materials in which mixtures of bentonite, sepiolite, and guar gum were used to overcome the shortcomings in bentonite to realise a high water-resistance and a permeability coefficient of below 1.0 × 10^-7 cm/s under saline water conditions. The optimal mixing ratio of bentonite, sepiolite, and guar gum was confirmed as 76:19:5 by conducting drying shrinkage cracking tests, free swelling tests, and hydraulic conductivity tests. The hydraulic conductivities of spherical particles, as measured in a rigid-wall permeameter and a flexible-wall permeameter, were less than 1.0 × 10^-7 cm/s under saline water conditions. The compressive properties of spherical particles were evaluated through triaxial compression testing. The engineering characteristics of the liner material were studied in the present research, but the long-term biodegradation characteristics of polymer additives were also important, yet remained unclear. The long-term biostability of the additives, and its effect on basal liner performance should be evaluated in future research.

Hydraulic and mechanical behavior of landfill clay liner containing SSA in contact with leachate

Sewage sludge ash (SSA) produced by municipal sludge can be used as a modified additive for clay liner, and improves the working performance of landfill clay liner in contact with leachate. Under the action of landfill leachate, the permeability, shear strength, phase composition, and pore structure of the modified clay are investigated through the flexible wall permeability test, triaxial shear test, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption test, respectively. The hydraulic conductivity of the modified clay containing 0-5% SSA is in the range of 3.94 × 10^-8-1.16 × 10^-7 cm/s, and the pollutant concentration of the sample without SSA was higher than others. The shear strength of the modified clay is more than that of the traditional clay liner, the cohesion rate of modified clay increases from 32.5 to 199.91 kPa, and the internal friction angle decreases from 32.5° to 15.6°. Furthermore, the weight loss rates of the samples are 15.69%, 17.92%, 18.06%, and 20.68%, respectively, when the SSA content increases from 0% to 5%. The total pore volume and average pore diameter of the modified clay decrease with the increase in the SSA content, respectively. However, the specific area of the modified clay increases with the increase in the SSA content.
