Effects of high-pressure extruding pretreatment on MSW upgrading and hydrolysis enhancement

A critical review on pretreatment and detoxification techniques required for biofuel production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste

The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a widely-available promising feedstock for biofuel production. However, the presence of different inhibitors originating from fruit and food/beverage wastes as well as recalcitrant lignocellulosic fractions hampers its bioconversion. This necessitates a pretreatment to augment the biodigestibility and fermentability of OFMSW. Hence, this review aims to provide the in-vogue inhibitory compound removal and pretreatment techniques that have been employed for efficient OFMSW conversion into biofuels, i.e., hydrogen, biogas, ethanol, and butanol. The techniques are compared concerning their mode of action, chemical and energy consumption, inhibitor formation and removal, economic feasibility, and environmental sustainability. This critique also reviews the existing knowledge gap and future perspectives for efficient OFMSW valorization. The insights provided pave the way toward developing energy-resilient cities while addressing environmental crises related to generating OFMSW.

Effects of combined ultrasonic and grinding pre-treatments on anaerobic digestion of vinegar residue: organic solubilization, hydrolysis, and CH4 production

ABSTRACTThe high lignocellulose content of vinegar residues (VR) limits their biochemical methane potential (BMP) in anaerobic digestion (AD). However, unlike reported high cellulosic materials such as straw and grass, single pre-treatment with ultrasonication or grinding only slightly improved VR AD, due to the high protein and carbohydrate contents of VR. This study used statistical analysis to show that the methane yield, protein and polysaccharide release, and hydrolysis performance during VR AD were significantly enhanced with a combined grinding-ultrasound pre-treatment. Specifically, at 60 min of ultrasonic, the group with the combined pre-treatment (60 min + RS) showed the highest VR BMP (∼307.1 mLCH₄/gVS), 68.7% greater than that in the control group. This group also exhibited optimal conditions for dissolution of polysaccharide and protein, with accumulated amounts of ∼500 and 1600 mg/L, respectively. The highest volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in the 60 min + RS group was 61.5% higher than that in the control group. Both dissolution and hydrolysis experiments suggested that ultrasound accelerated protein release from VR, particularly after the particle size was reduced, and that the grinding pre-treatment had a positive effect on polysaccharide release.

Comparison of three anaerobic digestion reactors for low-carbon wastewater treatment

In this study, three anaerobic digestion reactors using up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR), and anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) were studied. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), gas production, sludge performance, and microbial characteristics of the anaerobic digestion process were assessed. The results showed that the average COD removal efficiencies reached 86%, 83%, and 85%, with corresponding removed rates of 2.49, 0.48, and 0.79 kg COD m-3 d-1 in UASB, AnSBR, and AnMBR, respectively. After the reactors attained stable operation, both extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products decreased in all the reactors compared with the seed sludge. Methanothrix was the dominant archaea for methane production in the UASB, the relative abundance of which increased from 58.3% to 83.4%. These results identify UASB as the most suitable reactor for anaerobic digestion when treating wastewater with low carbon. Such reactors are important for the application and development of the energy self-sufficiency in sewage treatment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: UASB, SBR, and MBR were adopted to treat low-carbon wastewater using anaerobic digestion process. UASB performed the highest COD removal from low-carbon wastewater. The main microorganisms in UASB were Methanothrix, Methanomassiliicoccus, and Methanobacterium.

Source separation, transportation, pretreatment, and valorization of municipal solid waste: a critical review

Waste sorting is an effective means of enhancing resource or energy recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW). Waste sorting management system is not limited to source separation, but also involves at least three stages, i.e., collection and transportation (C&T), pretreatment, and resource utilization. This review focuses on the whole process of MSW management strategy based on the waste sorting perspective. Firstly, as the sources of MSW play an essential role in the means of subsequent valorization, the factors affecting the generation of MSW and its prediction methods are introduced. Secondly, a detailed comparison of approaches to source separation across countries is presented. Constructing a top-down management system and incentivizing or constraining residents' sorting behavior from the bottom up is believed to be a practical approach to promote source separation. Then, the current state of C&T techniques and its network optimization are reviewed, facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things technologies. Furthermore, the advances in pretreatment strategies for enhanced sorting and resource recovery are introduced briefly. Finally, appropriate methods to valorize different MSW are proposed. It is worth noting that new technologies, such as AI, show high application potential in waste management. The sharing of (intermediate) products or energy of varying processing units will inject vitality into the waste management network and achieve sustainable development.

Recent Progress and Trends in the Development of Microbial Biofuels from Solid Waste—A Review

This review covers the recent progress in the design and application of microbial biofuels, assessing the advancement of genetic engineering undertakings and their marketability, and lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment issues. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a promising sustainable biofuel feedstock due to its high content of lignocellulosic fiber. In this review, we compared the production of fatty alcohols, alkanes, and n-butanol from residual biogenic waste and the environmental/economic parameters to that of conventional biofuels. New synthetic biology tools can be used to engineer fermentation pathways within micro-organisms to produce long-chain alcohols, isoprenoids, long-chain fatty acids, and esters, along with alkanes, as substitutes to petroleum-derived fuels. Biotechnological advances have struggled to address problems with bioethanol, such as lower energy density compared to gasoline and high corrosive and hygroscopic qualities that restrict its application in present infrastructure. Biofuels derived from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) may have less environmental impacts compared to traditional fuel production, with the added benefit of lower production costs. Unfortunately, current advanced biofuel production suffers low production rates, which hinders commercial scaling-up efforts. Microbial-produced biofuels can address low productivity while increasing the spectrum of produced bioenergy molecules.

Study of biological and thermo-chemical pretreatment of organic fraction of municipal solid waste for enhanced biogas yield

Biogas production from organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) not only helps in solid waste management but also combat the food vs fuel dilemma. The presence of lignocellulosic material and other complex compounds in OFMSW hinder biogas production. Therefore, pretreatment is an essential step to increase the hydrolysis rate by converting complex compounds to simpler ones. This work was aimed at effective pretreatment of OFMSW by biological and thermo-chemical means. For biological pretreatment lignin degrading fungal strains, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus ostreatus were employed. Thermo-chemical treatment resulted in higher solubilisation yield in terms of sCOD and VFA making it a more effective method as compared with biological pretreatment. The optimisation of thermo-chemical pretreatment was done by the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM). The interactive effect of influencing factors NaOH dose, temperature and time were studied on the response of sCOD, VFA and phenolic content. The sCOD and VFA values were significantly increased by increasing the NaOH concentration, temperature and time to a certain limit. The optimised condition from RSM for maximum solubilisation yield in terms of sCOD, VFA and phenolic content was found to be NaOH dose of 4.72 g/L, temperature 180 °C and time 30.3 min. Biogas production was increased by 169.5% after pretreatment at RSM optimised conditions as compared with untreated OFMSW.

Influence of temperature on enhancement of volatile fatty acids fermentation from organic fraction of municipal solid waste: Synergism between food and paper components

This study explores individual contributions and synergistic effects of food and paper, main components of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) towards volatile fatty acids (VFA) fermentation under different temperatures (25, 37, 42 and 52 °C). Thanks to the synergism of food and paper component (FC & PC), the results revealed that OFMSW is suitable for VFA production. Maximum VFA production was noticed to be 21.5 mg/L at 42 °C, ~2.1, and 1.42 times higher than fermentation of PC and FC. Enhanced hydrolysis of PC occurred at >37 °C, increasing alkalinity in leachate to 6.7 g/L at 42 °C, thus maintaining a stable pH (5.4-5.6) during acidogenic fermentation. Additionally, 74% of COD is hydrolyzed, of which 79% is converted to VFA based on biodegradable carbon at 42 °C. It is suggested that co-existence of FC and PC can enhance VFA production of OFMSW, and targeted VFA production can be maximized through process optimization.

Fe0 inhibits bio-foam generating in anaerobic digestion reactor under conditions of organic shock loading and re-startup

Bio-foaming during the anaerobic digestion (AD) of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a major cause of unstable reactor operations, especially under high organic loading rates (OLRs). Here, we used two 40-liter anaerobic reactors to deal with the actual organic fraction of municipal solid waste at OLRs of 5 and 7.5 kgVS/m³/d and tried to inhibit bio-foam generation by dosing with Fe⁰. One of reactors had 400 g of Fe⁰ added before operation and additional 200 g of Fe⁰ was added when the operating conditions changed; the other one was the control reactor with no Fe⁰ dosing. The results show that bio-foam was generated in the control reactor at an organic shock loading of 10 kgVS/m³/d and re-startup at 5 kgVS/m³/d, while the reactor containing Fe⁰ operated normally. Due to the surfactant attributes of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), the probability of bio-foam generation was positively correlated with the effluent's degree of surface activity (SA) induced by VFAs, which is a parameter representing the foaming potential. Because VFA biodegradation was enhanced in the reactor with added Fe⁰, at the position of Fe⁰ accumulation, the SA was decreased by 49.7-59.2%. Furthermore, the effect of Fe⁰ dosing on inhibiting bio-foam was evaluated by comparison with traditional commercial anti-foam agents. The results suggest possible reasons for bio-foam generation in OFMSW AD and suggest the reasonable usage of Fe⁰ to inhibit bio-foam formation.
