Solidification/stabilization pre-treatment coupled with landfill disposal of heavy metals in MSWI fly ash in China: A systematic review

The growth in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) has resulted in a substantial rise in the production of fly ash in China. It is anticipated that during the "14th Five-Year Plan", the accumulated amount of fly ash stocked and disposed of at landfills will surpass 100 million tons. With the development of the economy and the implementation of garbage classification relevant policies, the pollution characteristics of heavy metal change in spatiotemporal distribution. Solidification/stabilization (S/S) pre-treatment coupled with landfill disposal is the mainstream method for fly ash. This study provides a systematic overview and comparison of the current application status and research on the mechanism of S/S technology, and the long-term stability of solidified/stabilized fly ash is a crucial factor in controlling the risks of landfills. Subsequently, it examines the influencing factors and mechanisms associated with heavy metals leaching under different environmental scenarios (meteorological factors, leachate and acid rain erosion, and carbonation, etc.), and concludes that single stabilization technology is difficult to meet long-term landfill requirements. Finally, the limits of heavy metal leaching toxicity evaluation methods and landfilled fly ash supervision were discussed, and relevant suggestions for future development were proposed. This study can provide theoretical instruction and technical support for the risk control of potential environmental risks of heavy metals in solidified/stabilized fly ash from landfills in China.

Determination of the sanitary protection zone of municipal waste landfill based on evaluation of the environmental hazards: Case study of the Zhytomyr territorial community, Ukraine

Today, Ukraine is far from European standards, and the country's waste management system remains confronted with environmental and technogenic problems, with 7 % of the territory occupied by landfills. Most settlements in Ukraine do not have solid waste management programs or sanitation schemes. Landfills, and especially municipal solid waste dumps, are significant contributors to air, water, and soil pollution. The objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of landfills, to translate them from a descriptive and abstract plane to a mathematical plane, and to identify the sanitary protection zones currently utilized for landfills. The subject of this study is the municipal waste landfill of the Zhytomyr territorial community (Ukraine), a typical Ukrainian landfill operated with minimal environmental protection measures. The authors used an original approach to assess the environmental hazard of a municipal waste landfill, taking into consideration the values of absolute indicators of water pollution for specific physicochemical characteristics; maximum permissible concentrations of the studied indicators; distance from the landfill boundary; the amount of excess of the absolute indicator of pollution compared to the MPC; and the intensity of odor in the landfill. The calculated pollution indicators served as the basis for an integrated assessment of the environmental hazards posed by the municipal waste landfill. The study revealed that the Ot indicator (evaluation of the environmental hazards of municipal waste landfills) depends exponentially on the landfill boundary. Based on the value of Ot, environmental zoning was carried out: according to the calculations and taking into account the monitoring of the environmental condition in the landfill's impact zone, the authors recommended the parameters of environmental zoning on the basis of the Ot value. The purpose of this study is to clarify the sanitary protection zones that are currently used for landfills and solid household waste disposals. The research materials can also be used to create databases on landfills, enabling the development of a plan to manage them as sources of heightened environmental risk.

Tricks and tracks in waste management with a special focus on municipal landfill leachate: Leads and obstacles

Landfilling is the most widely used disposal method for municipal solid waste around the world. The main disadvantage of this strategy is formation of leachate, among other aspects. Landfill leachate contains highly toxic and bio-refractory substances that are detrimental to the environment and human health. Hence, the risk(s) of discharging potentially harmful landfill leachate into the environment need to be assessed and measured in order to make effective choices about landfill leachate management and treatment. In view of this, the present review aims to investigate (a) how landfill leachate is perceived as an emerging concern, and (b) the stakeholders' mid- to long-term policy priorities for implementing technological and integrative solutions to reduce the harmful effects of landfill leachate. Because traditional methods alone have been reported ineffective, and in response to emerging contaminants and stringent regulations, new effective and integrated leachate treatments have been developed. This study gives a forward-thinking of the accomplishments and challenges in landfill leachate treatment during the last decade. It also provides a comprehensive compilation of the formation and characterization of landfill leachate, the geo-environmental challenges that it raises, as well as the resource recovery and industrial linkage associated with it in order to provide an insight into its sustainable management.

Hazardous Waste Advanced Management in a Selected Region of Poland

This article presents a study on hazardous waste management in the Malopolskie region of Poland. The study was based on the information obtained during three years from 2016 to 2018, and following analysis, it was found that in 2016 there was the highest amount of 24,872.13 tons of hazardous waste produced, of which only a three-fold lower amount was disposed of. In this study, various types of hazardous waste were analyzed, including the waste from construction materials and asbestos. The predominant share of 50% of the mass of analyzed hazardous waste was felt on the generated one. Waste recovered in installations had a lower share of 43%, with a significant and favorable increase of over 5000.00 tons. In the context of the correctness of environmental aspects, it was considered an advisable solution that would optimize treatment conditions, and at the same time minimize the costs of hazardous waste management.

Municipal solid waste management: Dynamics, risk assessment, ecological influence, advancements, constraints and perspectives

Global energy consumption has been increasing in tandem with economic growth, putting pressure on the world's supply of renewable energy sources. Municipal Solid waste (MSW) has been reported contributing immensely to the improvement of a secure environment and renewable sources. Energy scarcity and conventional MSW disposal methods in developing countries lead towards many environmental and economic issues. Scientists have been able to experiment with various waste-to-energy conversion technologies in light of this situation. This communication highlights and reviews WtE technologies to convert MSW and other feedstocks into electricity, hydrogen gas, bioethanol along with other value added products like fertilizer(s), platform chemicals as an environmentally friendly products. This review comprehensively summarized the dynamics, risk assessment, ecological influence, advancements, constraints and perspectives altogether in field of municipal solid waste management and treatment. Stare-of-the-art information on ecological influence and risk assessment in handling and transportation of municipal solid waste has been provided. Advanced trends involved in remediation of emerging pollutants and resources obtained from municipal solid wastes have been uncovered. Lastly, this paper comprises constraints and perspectives for uncovering MSW based circular bioeconomy aspects.

Selective recovery of manganese from electrolytic manganese residue by using water as extractant under mechanochemical ball grinding: Mechanism and kinetics

This research aimed to address the issue of residual manganese in electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), which is difficult to recycle and can easily become an environmental hazard and resource waste. This research developed a method for the efficient and selective recovery of manganese from EMR and the removal of ammonia nitrogen (ammonium sulfate) under the combined action of ball milling and oxalic acid. The optimum process parameters of this method were obtained through single-factor experiment and response-surface model. Results showed that the recovery rate of manganese can exceed 98%, the leaching rate of iron was much lower than 2%, and the leaching rates of manganese and ammonia nitrogen after EMR ball grinding were 1.01 and 13.65 mg/L, respectively. Kinetics and mechanism studies revealed that ammonium salts were primarily removed in the form of ammonia, and that insoluble manganese (MnO₂) was recovered by the reduction of FeS and FeS₂ in EMR under the action of oxalic acid. Iron was solidified in the form of Fe₂O₃ and Fe₂(SiO₃)₃. The technology proposed in this research has great industrial application value for the recycling and harmless treatment of EMR.

Sharp discrepancies between nuclear and conventional toxic waste: Technical analysis and public perception

Partly due to failed approaches in nuclear waste (NW) governance, years of high levels of attention have resulted in novel, more participatory avenues in Switzerland and other countries. What can be said about the case of conventional hazardous waste (CHW) from households? What technical and legal aspects are similar to or different from those of the NW domain? How does the public perceive CHW and its handling? We address these (so far) open questions in this study that comprises multiple methodological approaches. We combine a technical and system assessment with a societal (perception) assessment, based on a representative survey (N = 3082) among the German-speaking population of Switzerland. We draw some conclusions for a possible way forward in hazardous waste policy and governance. We find a remarkable disparity between technical analysis and public perception. The community should discuss whether the current NW management is forward-looking and may serve as a model for CHW. For CHW, the multiplicity of agents and the heterogeneity of substances may make the situation too complex, non-transparent, and thus less salient in the public perception. Paradoxically, the ubiquity of conventional waste, traditional community landfills, and everyday handling of some waste may make it appear less alarming than NW.

A multi-faceted, environmental forensic characterization of a paradigmatic brownfield polluted by hazardous waste containing Hg, As, PAHs and dioxins

Hg and As mining-metallurgy plants have severely impacted environmental compartments. La Soterraña site (northern Spain) has been previously studied in this context. However, here we used a novel multi-purpose forensic approach to examine accumulations not only of mining-metallurgical waste (volumes above 80,000 t) but also C&D waste as a repository of pollutants (above 10% of As leached in standard tests) at this site. High Hg and As content in very fine grain-size fractions (up to 100,000 mg/kg of As in metallurgy waste below 10 μm) was significant, as was the predominance of As (III) in metallurgy waste. In addition, GC-MS techniques revealed the predominance of PAHs (secondarily Oxy-PAHs and PCBs), which showed a pyrogenic fingerprint, as determined by molecular ratios. Moreover, toxic organometallics (Hg-aromatics) were detected and metallurgy waste was identified as a source of dioxins and furanes (TEQ close to 30). On the basis of our observations, La Soterraña emerges as one of the most polluted sites in Europe and therefore requires urgent remediation. Our key findings indicate that C&D waste should be considered hazardous. Metallurgy waste, in turn, raises maximum concern given the simultaneous presence of toxic inorganic and organic contaminants.

Methane Oxidation Efficiency in Biofiltration Systems with Different Moisture Content Treating Diluted Landfill Gas

This study investigates the influence of moisture content on the potential oxidation efficiency of methane (CH4) of biofiltration systems treating landfill gas containing high oxygen concentrations. Column tests filled with compost with different moisture contents (20%, 30%, and 40%) loaded with different methane flows were set up on a laboratory scale. Analyzing the results the following evidences can be summarized: With low methane load (<100 g CH4 m−2 d−1), a moisture content of 20% was not enough to support bacterial activity, while a moisture content of 40% advantaged the compost respiration assisting it to become the dominating process; with higher methane load (100–300 g CH4 m−2 d−1), a moisture content of 30% resulted in an optimal value to support methanotrophic activity showing the highest CH4 concentration reduction; moving on to a CH4 load above 300 g CH4 m−2 d−1, the inhibition of methanotrophic activity emerged independently to the moisture content of the filter media. The optimal configuration is obtained for a moisture content of 30% and in the case of flows below 200 g CH4 m−2 d−1 for which the oxidation efficiency results higher than 80%.

Kinetics and modeling of trace metal leaching from bottom ashes dominated by diffusion or advection

Leaching kinetics of trace metals from incineration bottom ashes (IBA) under diffusion and advection were investigated through leaching tests of compacted granulars of IBAs and their packed columns with seawater eluent for 64 days and 26 days, respectively. Metal fluxes were distinct among species while linearily decreased at log-log scales as a function of time. Short-term environmental risks for Cu, Ni and Pb were identified under advection. The metal leaching behavior generally followed the pseudo-second order under diffusion, while the pseudo-first order kinetics under advection. Investigated metals may be further identified as diffusion- (As, Cd, Cr, Sb) and advection-dominant species (Ba, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) according to their fluxes, which interestingly corresponded to the low- (5.19-147.90 mg·kg^-1) and high-value (116.46-2398.44 mg·kg^-1) of their metal distribution from IBAs, respectively. Considering the general higher metal release, decay models were employed to simulate the column leaching results. Particularly, Type-II model based on two-site assumptions fit much better to the experimental data, unveiling significant yet retarded release (in 1-2 pore volumes) of certain metals from the slow-reaction sites. Further investigation on the release of bulk parameters unveiled that, there existed rebounded leaching rates primarily ascribed to the IBA heterogeneity.

Landfill GHG Reduction through Different Microbial Methane Oxidation Biocovers

Emissions from daily and final covers of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills can produce significant impacts on local and global environments. Simplifying, landfills can cause local impacts with odor emissions and global impacts with GHGs. This work focuses on hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methane (CH4) emissions, with the aim of studying how it is possible to reduce their impacts by means of biofiltration systems. Both field and laboratory investigations have been carried out in Casa Rota Landfill (Tuscany, Italy). In the field trials, four pilot-scale biocovers made of compost from a source-selected organic fraction (SS compost), compost from a mechanical biological treatment plant—the residual fractions of the MSW, a mixed compost (SS-MSW compost) and sand were monitored in the daily cover area of the landfill, where high emissions were detected. Results showed that high CH4 and H2S emissions reductions occurred in the mixed SS-MSW compost plot, given a maximum methane oxidation efficiency of greater than 98% and an average oxidation efficiency of about 75%. To assess the specific oxidation rate, laboratory tests using SS-MSW compost sampled from the biocovers were done.

Mitigation of Methane, NMVOCs and Odor Emissions in Active and Passive Biofiltration Systems at Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

Biofiltration systems are emerging technological solutions for the removal of methane and odors from landfill gas when flaring is no longer feasible. This work analyzed and compared two full-scale biofiltration systems: biofilter and biowindows. The emission mitigation of methane, non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) and odors during a two-year management and monitoring period was studied. In addition to diluted methane, more than 50 NMVOCs have been detected in the inlet raw landfill gas and the sulfur compounds resulted in the highest odor activity value. Both systems, biofilter and biowindows, were effective for the oxidation of methane (58.1% and 88.05%, respectively), for the mitigation of NMVOCs (higher than 80%) and odor reduction (99.84% and 93.82% respectively). As for the biofilter monitoring, it was possible to define the oxidation efficiency trend and in fact to guarantee that for an oxidation efficiency of 80%, the methane load must be less than 6.5 g CH4/m2h with an oxidation rate of 5.2 g CH4/m2h.

Halocarbon Emissions from Hazardous Waste Landfills: Analysis of Sources and Risks

Landfills are sources of fugitive volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions, including halocarbons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of halogenated VOCs to the health risks associated with the exposure of workers operating in landfills, gathering information on the role of endogenous/exogenous sources present in anthropized areas. A hazardous waste landfill located in Turin, Italy was used as a case study. Ambient concentrations of 10 pollutants (BTEX, styrene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and 1,2-dichloropropane), measured in 10 points of the landfill area, were considered and analyzed. The data had a monthly frequency and covered two years. A cumulative health risk analysis was conducted by applying a Monte-Carlo method. The results showed that the contribution of 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,2-dichloropropane was 17.9% and 19.4% for the total risk and hazard index respectively. Benzene and ethylbenzene gave the highest contribution to the total risk (56.8% and 24.8%, respectively). In the second phase of the study, waste typologies that are possibly responsible for halocarbon emissions were investigated. Halocarbon concentration trends and waste disposal records were compared. Although further investigation is needed, some waste typologies were not excluded to contribute to halocarbon emissions, in particular sludge coming from wastewater treatment plants.

Characterization of Excavated Waste of Different Ages in View of Multiple Resource Recovery in Landfill Mining

With the aim of examining the forcing factors in postmanagement landfills, in this study, excavation waste from nonhazardous municipal waste landfill in Tuscany was characterized for the first time. The specific objective was to estimate the feasibility of sampling and analyzing the excavated waste in order to define its properties and provide information about possible landfill mining projects. Based on the biochemical methane potential assays, it was shown that the excavated waste had not yet been stabilized (i.e., with a production of 52.2 ± 28.7 NlCH4/kgTS) in the landfill, probably due to the low excavated waste moisture content (36% ± 6% w/w). Furthermore, excavated waste has a high calorific value, i.e., 15.2 ± 4.1 MJ/kg; the quantity of combustibles in the industrial shredder waste (16 MJ/kg) was rather modest compared to that of municipal solid waste (20.8 MJ/Kg). In conclusion, during large scale excavation of the landfill, it was possible to evaluate how a dedicated treatment plant could be designed to treat and select waste which might appear in a different category. For excavated industrial waste, detailed mechanical sorting may be convenient for end-of-waste recovery to improve calorific value.

Molten hydroxide for detoxification of chlorine-containing waste: Unraveling chlorine retention efficiency and chlorine salt enrichment

Hazardous waste dechlorination reduces the potential of creating dioxins during the incineration process. To investigate the salt effect on waste dechlorination, molten hydroxides with a low melting temperature were utilized for the pre-dechlorination and decomposition of chlorine-containing organic wastes (COWs) including trichlorobenzene (TCB), perchloroethylene, hexachlorobenzene and chlordane. The results showed that a eutectic mixture of caustic sodium and potassium hydroxides (41 wt.% NaOH and 59 wt.% KOH) led to a low melting point below 300°C and a relatively high chlorine retention efficiency (CRE) with TCB as a representative COWs. The amounts of hydroxides, reaction time, and temperature all had notable influence on CRE. When the mass ratio of hydroxides to TCB reached 30:1, approximately 98.1% of the TCB was destroyed within 2.5 hr at 300°C with CRE of 71.6%. According to the residue analysis, the shapes of reaction residues were irregular with particles becoming swollen and porous. The benzene ring and C-Cl bonds disappeared, while carboxyl groups formed in the residues. The stripped chlorine was retained and condensed to form chloride salts, and the relative abundance of the chloride ions associated with the mass of TCB in residues increased from 0 to 75.0% within the 2.5 hr reaction time. The observed concentration of dioxins in residues was 5.6 ngTEQ/kg. A reaction pathway and possible additional reactions that occur in this dechlorination system were proposed. Oxidizing agents may attack TCB and facilitate hydrogenation/dechlorination reactions, making this process a promising and environmentally friendly approach for chlorine-containing organic waste treatment.

Review of leaching behavior of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash

Incineration is widely adopted in modern waste management because it provides an effective way to minimize municipal solid waste that needs to be disposed of in landfills. The ash residue is often disposed by landfilling. Alternatively, the incineration ash may be recycled and reused for various applications. The crucial issues, however, are the leaching of harmful elements during the use and the end-of-life phases. This review summarizes extensive studies on leaching behavior of municipal solid waste incineration ash. Specifically, pollutants generated through leaching, factors governing leaching, methodologies to study leaching, leaching mechanisms, and treatments to reduce leaching. Many types of pollutants are generated through leaching from municipal solid waste incineration ash, in which heavy metals and organic contaminants are the most toxic and concerned. Ash properties, pH and liquid to solid ratio are the main factors governing municipal solid waste incineration ash leaching. Leaching behavior of municipal solid waste incineration ash is complicated and existing methods to evaluate leaching may not be able to represent the field conditions. Solubility and sorption are the two major leaching mechanisms. Many treatment methods have been proposed. However, not all methods are effective and some approaches are associated with high energy and high cost, which makes them less economically feasible and attractive.

Comprehensive characterization on Ga (In)-bearing dust generated from semiconductor industry for effective recovery of critical metals

Gallium (indium)-bearing dust generated from semiconductor industry is an important secondary resource for critical metal recycling. However, the diverse and distinct physicochemical natures of such waste material have made its recycling less effective, e.g. low extraction rate and complex treatment procedures. This research is devoted to gaining in-depth knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of such waste, including the chemical composition, physical phases, particle size distribution and chemical-thermal properties with a series of technologies. As a consequence, the occurrence and distribution of GaN and metallic indium phases are found to be crucial to efficient metal recycling. The thermal-chemical behavior shows that continuous oxidation occurred in the air atmosphere, indicating that heat-treatment followed by acid leaching is feasible to improve their recycling efficiencies. This process is able to leach 80.35% of gallium and 95.78% of indium with one-step operation. Furthermore, different treatment strategies for the waste material are preliminarily evaluated and discussed for the aim of metal recovery. The results show that gallium can be selectively recycled with recycling rate of 89.59% using alkaline leaching. With this research, the understanding on the recyclability of different metals and possibilities of selective recovery can be improved. It provides guidelines during the stage of decision-making for critical metal recycling in order to achieve efficient resource circulation.

Biochemical Hydrogen Potential Tests Using Different Inocula

Four inocula collected from different operating facilities were tested in their hydrogenic performances by means of two biochemical hydrogen potential test set-ups using sucrose and food waste as substrates, with the aim of evaluating the influence of inoculum media in batch fermentative assays. The selected inocula were: activated sludge collected from the aerobic unit of a municipal wastewater treatment plant, digested sludge from an anaerobic reactor treating organic waste and cattle manure, digested sludge from an anaerobic reactor treating agroindustrial residues, and digested sludge from an anaerobic reactor of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Test results, in terms of specific hydrogen production, hydrogen conversion efficiency, and volatile solids removal efficiency, were significantly dependent on the type of inoculum. Statistical analysis showed different results, indicating that findings were due to the different inocula used in the tests. In particular, assays performed with activated sludge showed the highest performances for both substrates and both experimental set-ups.

Speciation analysis and leaching behaviors of selected trace elements in spent SCR catalyst

This study investigated heavy metal chemical speciation and leaching behavior from a board-type spent selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst containing high concentrations of vanadium, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, and lead. A three-step sequential extraction method, standard toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), and leaching characteristic tests have been performed. It was found that the mobility of six heavy metals in the spent SCR catalyst was significantly different. The mobility of the six heavy metals exhibited the following order: Ni > Zn > V > Cr > As > Cu. Meanwhile, TCLP test results revealed relatively high Zn and Cr leaching rate of 83.20% and 10.35%, respectively. It was found that leaching rate was positively correlated with available contents (sum of acid soluble, reducible and oxidizable fractions). Leaching characteristics tests indicated that pH substantially affected the leaching of these heavy metals. In particular, the leaching of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn was positively influenced by strong acid, while V and As were easily released in the presence of strong acid and strong alkali (pH < 3 or pH > 11). In terms of kinetics, the leaching of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and As within the spent catalyst was dominated by erosion and dissolution processes, which were rapid reaction processes. V was released in large amounts within 1 h, but its leaching amount sharply decreased with time due to readsorption.

Facilitative capture of As(V), Pb(II) and methylene blue from aqueous solutions with MgO hybrid sponge-like carbonaceous composite derived from sugarcane leafy trash

Enhancing the contaminant adsorption capacity is a key factor affecting utilization of carbon-based adsorbents in wastewater treatment and encouraging development of biomass thermo-disposal. In this study, a novel MgO hybrid sponge-like carbonaceous composite (HSC) derived from sugarcane leafy trash was prepared through an integrated adsorption-pyrolysis method. The resulted HSC composite was characterized and employed as adsorbent for the removal of negatively charged arsenate (As(V)), positively charged Pb(II), and the organic pollutant methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions in batch experiments. The effects of solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and ionic strength on As(V), Pb(II) and MB adsorption were investigated. HSC was composed of nano-size MgO flakes and nanotube-like carbon sponge. Hybridization significantly improved As(V), Pb(II) and methylene blue (MB) adsorption when compared with the material without hybridization. The maximum As(V), Pb(II) and MB adsorption capacities obtained from Langmuir model were 157 mg/g, 103 mg/g and 297 mg/g, respectively. As(V) adsorption onto HSC was best fit by the pseudo-second-order model, and Pb(II) and MB with the intraparticle diffusion model. Increased temperature and ionic strength decreased Pb(II) and MB adsorption onto HSC more than As(V). Further FT-IR, XRD and XPS analysis demonstrated that the removal of As(V) by HSC was mainly dominated by surface deposition of MgHAsO₄ and Mg(H₂AsO₄)₂ crystals on the HSC composite, while carbon π-π* transition and carbon π-electron played key roles in Pb(II) and MB adsorption. The interaction of Pb(II) with carbon matrix carboxylate was also evident. Overall, MgO hybridization improves the preparation of the nanotube-like carbon sponge composite and provides a potential agricultual residue-based adsorbent for As(V), Pb(II) and MB removal.
