Abstract
Lactate is among the top-ten-biobased products. It occurs naturally as D- or L-isomer and as a racemic mixture (DL-lactate). Generally, lactate with a high optical purity is more valuable. In searching for suitable renewable feedstocks for lactate production, unutilized organic waste streams are increasingly coming into focus. Here, we investigated acid whey, which is a lactose-rich byproduct of yogurt production, that represents a considerable environmental footprint for the dairy industry. We investigated the steering of the lactate-isomer composition in a continuous and open culture system (HRT = 0.6 d) at different pH values (pH 5.0 vs. pH 6.5) and process temperatures (38°C to 50°C). The process startup was achieved by autoinoculation. At a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 47°C-50°C, exclusive D-lactate production occurred because of the dominance of Lactobacillus spp. (> 95% of relative abundance). The highest volumetric D-lactate production rate of 722 ± 94.6 mmol C L-1 d-1 (0.90 ± 0.12 g L-1 h-1), yielding 0.93 ± 0.15 mmol C mmol C-1, was achieved at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 44°C (n = 18). At a pH of 6.5 and a temperature of 44°C, we found a mixture of DL-lactate (average D-to-L-lactate production rate ratio of 1.69 ± 0.90), which correlated with a high abundance of Streptococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp. However, exclusive L-lactate production could not be achieved. Our results show that for the continuous conversion of lactose-rich dairy waste streams, the pH was a critical process parameter to control the yield of lactate isomers by influencing the composition of the microbiota. In contrast, temperature adjustments allowed the improvement of bioprocess kinetics.

Abstract
Brewer's spent grain (BSG) is an undervalorized organic feedstock residue composed of fermentable macromolecules, such as proteins, starch, and residual soluble carbohydrates. It also contains at least 50% (as dry weight) of lignocellulose. Methane-arrested anaerobic digestion is one of the promising microbial technologies to valorize such complex organic feedstock into value-added metabolic intermediates, such as ethanol, H2, and short-chain carboxylates (SCC). Under specific fermentation conditions, these intermediates can be microbially transformed into medium-chain carboxylates through a chain elongation pathway. Medium-chain carboxylates are of great interest as they can be used as bio-based pesticides, food additives, or components of drug formulations. They can also be easily upgraded by classical organic chemistry into bio-based fuels and chemicals. This study investigates the production potential of medium-chain carboxylates driven by a mixed microbial culture in the presence of BSG as an organic substrate. Because the conversion of complex organic feedstock to medium-chain carboxylates is limited by the electron donor content, we assessed the supplementation of H2 in the headspace to improve the chain elongation yield and increase the production of medium-chain carboxylates. The supply of CO2 as a carbon source was tested as well. The additions of H2 alone, CO2 alone, and both H2 and CO2 were compared. The exogenous supply of H2 alone allowed CO2 produced during acidogenesis to be consumed and nearly doubled the medium-chain carboxylate production yield. The exogenous supply of CO2 alone inhibited the whole fermentation. The supplementation of both H2 and CO2 allowed a second elongation phase when the organic feedstock was exhausted, which increased the medium-chain carboxylate production by 285% compared to the N2 reference condition. Carbon- and electron-equivalent balances, and the stoichiometric ratio of 3 observed for the consumed H2/CO2, suggest an H2- and CO2-driven second elongation phase, converting SCC to medium-chain carboxylates without an organic electron donor. The thermodynamic assessment confirmed the feasibility of such elongation.

Abstract
To optimize the volatile fatty acid production for anaerobic fermentation, the ear-removed corn was ensiled without (control) or with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP), Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (LC) and L. paraplantarum (LpP). Inoculation of LpP increased acetic acid content by 40%, and decreased butyric acid content by 38% in relative to control. Moreover, inoculation of LpP decreased the bacterial alpha diversity indices, while inherent species of Lentilactobacillus buchneri and L. hilgardii dominated the anaerobic fermentation. In particular, inoculation of LpP restricted the growth of yeasts and production of propionic acid at the early stage of storage, but continuously stimulated anaerobic fermentation, resulting in a higher maximal cumulative gas emissions of methane (by about 20 %) than that of LP and LC. Therefore, inoculation of LpP during anaerobic storage was favorable to produce intermediate metabolites (acetic acid) for subsequent biogas production of ear-removed corn.

Abstract
For pollution control and waste utilization, a promising future direction is to obtain high-value carbon sources from organic waste. In this experiment, swine manure was efficiently converted into high concentration volatile fatty acids through continuous hydrolysis-acidification bioreactors. This study determined the process conditions, the composition distribution of volatile fatty acids and the availability of fermentation broth. The results showed that the reactor with a hydraulic retention time of 1.5 days had the optimal production performance of volatile fatty acids. The highest hydrolysis degree (62.2%) and acidification degree (42.5%) were realized in this reactor at the influent soluble chemical oxygen demand of 5460 mg/L. Furthermore, when the influent soluble chemical oxygen demand was 7660 mg/L, volatile fatty acids of 6065 mg-COD/L could be produced stably, and the proportion of volatile fatty acids in soluble chemical oxygen demand was the largest (75%). Additionally, the fermentation broth rich in volatile fatty acids could be applied to deep nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This work provides a productive approach to resource recovery from swine manure.

Abstract
The effectiveness of producing n-caproate from food waste without external electron donors (EDs) was investigated through batch and semi-continuous fermentation. The maximum concentration of n-caproate reached 10,226.28 mg COD/L during semi-continuous fermentation. The specificity for n-caproate was the highest at 40.19 ± 3.95%, and the soluble COD conversion rate of n-caproate reached up to 22.50 ± 1.09% at the end of batch fermentation. The production of n-caproate was coupled with the generation of lactate as an ED to facilitate chain elongation reactions. When lactate was used as the only substrate, n-butyrate (64.12 ± 20.11%) markedly dominated the products, instead of n-caproate (0.63 ± 0.07%). Microbial community analysis revealed that Caproiciproducens, Rummeliibacillus, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12 were the key genera related to n-caproate production. In addition to n-caproate, n-butyrate dominated the products in batch and semi-continuous fermentation with a maximum specificity of 47.59 ± 3.39%. Clostridium_sensu_stricto_7 was committed to producing n-butyrate from lactate.

Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) Production from Wastewaters with High Salinity—Influence of pH, Salinity and Reactor Configuration. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2021. Abstract
The hydrocarbon-based economy is moving at a large pace to a decarbonized sustainable bioeconomy based on biorefining all types of secondary carbohydrate-based raw materials. In this work, 50 g L−1 in COD of a mixture of food waste, brine and wastewater derived from a biodiesel production facility were used to produce organic acids, important building-blocks for a biobased industry. High salinity (12–18 g L−1), different reactors configuration operated in batch mode, and different initial pH were tested. In experiment I, a batch stirred reactor (BSR) at atmospheric pressure and a granular sludge bed column (GSBC) were tested with an initial pH of 5. In the end of the experiment, the acidification yield (ηa) was similar in both reactors (22–24%, w/w); nevertheless, lactic acid was in lower concentrations in BSR (6.3 g L−1 in COD), when compared to GSBC (8.0 g L−1 in COD), and valeric was the dominant acid, reaching 17.3% (w/w) in the BSR. In experiment II, the BSR and a pressurized batch stirred reactor (PBSR, operated at 6 bar) were tested with initial pH 7. The ηa and the VFA concentration were higher in the BSR (46%, 22.8 g L−1 in COD) than in the PBSR (41%, 20.3 g/L in COD), and longer chain acids were more predominant in BSR (24.4% butyric, 6.7% valeric, and 6.2% caproic acids) than in PBSR (23.2%, 6.2%, and 4.2%, respectively). The results show that initial pH of 7 allows achieving higher ηa, and the BSR presents the most suitable reactor among tested configurations to produce VFA from wastes/wastewaters with high salinity.

Abstract
This study analyzed bacterial community structure for large-scale brewery wastewater treatment at different heights in internal circulation (IC) reactor. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi were dominant bacteria, which accounted for 64.17%, 64.04%, 59.87% and 55.79% in phylum level, respectively. The unidentified bacteria were accounted for a large proportion in genus level, available data showed that Longilinea, Desulfomicrobium, Caldithrix, Geobacter and Syntrophorhabdus were relatively abundant. Organic fermentation, hydrolysis, and acidification were mainly completed at the bottom, and production of hydrogen and methane were completed in the upper and middle part of reactor. Alpha diversity and cluster distance analysis showed the bacterial community could be divided into bottom, middle and upper part of IC reactor. The IC reactor possessed the CODCr removal efficiency of 80% - 84.09%, and BOD5 of 77.50% - 86% for brewery wastewater. This study would provide bacterial analysis references of IC reactor for industrial wastewater treatment in future.

Abstract
Small-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) can be an effective organic waste management system that also provides energy for small businesses and rural communities. This study measured fuel production from digestions of single and mixed feedstocks using an unheated, 2 m3 digester operated continuously in a temperate climate for over three years. Using local food waste, brewery waste, grease waste, and agricultural residues, this study determined that small-scale AD co-digestions were almost always higher yielding than single feedstocks during psychrophilic operation and seasonal temperature transitions. Agricultural residues from Miscanthus x giganteus had the greatest impact on biomethane production during co-digestion (4.7-fold greater average biogas %CH4), while mesophilic digestion of brewery waste alone produced the most biogas (0.76 gCH4 gVS−1 d−1). Biogas production during the transition from mesophilic to psychrophilic was temporarily maintained at levels similar to mesophilic digestions, particularly during co-digestions, but biogas quality declined during these temperature shifts. Full-time operation of small-scale, unheated AD systems could be feasible in temperate climates if feedstock is intentionally amended to stabilize carbon content.

Abstract
The biological treatment of mine drainage (MD) using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is a technology in growing exploitation. The use of by-products as sources of electrons can make this treatment more environmentally and economically advantageous. However, the high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the presence of recalcitrant molecules can lead to the accumulation of metabolic intermediates that acidify the system, thus interrupting the treatment. Besides, the adaptation of the inoculum to the establishment of sulfidogenesis with MD and by-product may be slow. This study aimed to investigate prompt adaptation and operation strategies that do not require additives to enable the sulfidogenic process to occur while maintaining a pH close to neutrality. The sources of electrons tested were trub (brewery residue) and crude glycerol - CG (residue from the biodiesel production). The inoculum from a methanogenic reactor was stored with a real MD for a month. The adapted inoculum was applied in a batch reactor for 168 h of hydraulic detention time, and promoted 75.8 ± 4.3% of sulfate removal from an MD with 3756.4 ± 258 mg.L-1 of sulfate using CG in a COD/SO42- ratio of 3 ratio. With higher initial substrate concentrations, acidification occurred and the treatment was interrupted. Using trub instead of CG, the acidification occurred at a COD/SO42- ratio of 3. Acidification was prevented and the best efficiencies in sulfate removal were obtained when the amount of substrate corresponding to COD/SO42- ratio of 3 was fractioned into equal parts and added over six days in the CG reactor. It was achieved 94.15 ± 1.76% of sulfate removal. With trub, the same procedure in which this COD was divided into seven parts, and resulted in a sulfate removal of 88.49 ± 1.02%. The removal of metals and metalloids were greater than 94.5% in all the systems in which the substrate supply was made fractionally, and the effluent generated presented alkalinity between 3370 and 4242 mg CaCO3.L-1, and pH between 6.8 and 7. The method of adaptation and operation applied allowed the realization of a MD treatment with quick establishment of sulfidogenesis and without the use of neutralizing additives. Finally, the effluent presented characteristics considered favorable for a later stage of post-treatment of the effluent with methane generation.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are intermediates of anaerobic digestion with high value and wide range of usage. Co-digestion of sewage sludge and external organic waste (OW) for VFA production can help achieve both resource recovery and ensure sustainable and innovative waste management. In view of this, the effect of substrate proportions on VFA production from co-digestion of primary sewage sludge and OW is studied. Long-term operation in a semi-continuous reactor was performed to assess the resilience of such a system and the VFA-rich effluent was tested for its ability to be used as carbon source for denitrification. Co-digestion was initially carried out in batch reactors with OW proportion of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% in terms of COD and scaled up in a semi-continuous reactor operation with 50% OW. In the short-term operation in the batch mode, acetic acid dominated, however, increasing OW fraction resulted in increased valeric and caproic acid production. Moreover, in the long-term semi-continuous operation, caproic acid dominated, accounting for ≈55% of VFAs. The VFA-rich effluent from the semi-continuous reactor achieved the highest denitrification rate as a carbon source when compared with acetic acid and methanol. The results demonstrate that co-fermentation can increase VFA yield and shift products from acetic acid to caproic acid in long-term operation and the VFAs can be used within wastewater treatment plants to close the loop.

Abstract
Nonylphenol (NP) biodegradation in waste activated sludge (WAS) under anaerobic conditions is usually slow, and no information on NP biodegradation under acidogenic conditions is currently available. In this study, the simultaneous enhancement of NP biodegradation and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) accumulation in a WAS fermentation system under acidogenic conditions was accomplished by controlling pH 10 and adding sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). The biodegradation efficiency of NP was found to be 55.5% within 8 d under acidogenic conditions, much higher than that in the control (24.6%). Meanwhile, the concentration of SCFAs under the same conditions for NP biodegradation was increased from 2234 mg COD/L (control) to 4691 mg COD/L (at pH 10 with SLS). Mechanism study revealed that the abundances of both NP-degrading microorganisms and acidogenic bacteria increased under acidogenic conditions. Altering the enzymatic activity and the quantity of functional genes in the acidogenic fermentation system were beneficial to NP biodegradation and SCFAs accumulation. Furthermore, organic substrates available for uptake by NP-degrading and acidogenic bacteria, i.e. NP, protein and carbohydrate, were released from WAS under acidogenic conditions. More importantly, intermediate substrates involved in acidogenic fermentation were advantageous to the cometabolic biodegradation of NP.

Abstract
Environmental pressures caused by population growth and consumerism require the development of resource recovery from waste, hence a circular economy approach. The production of chemicals and fuels from organic waste using mixed microbial cultures (MMC) has become promising. MMC use the synergy of bio-catalytic activities from different microorganisms to transform complex organic feedstock, such as by-products from food production and food waste. In the absence of oxygen, the feedstock can be converted into biogas through the established anaerobic digestion (AD) approach. The potential of MMC has shifted to production of intermediate AD compounds as precursors for renewable chemicals. A particular set of anaerobic pathways in MMC fermentation, known as chain elongation, can occur under specific conditions producing medium chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) with higher value than biogas and broader applicability. This review introduces the chain elongation pathway and other bio-reactions occurring during MMC fermentation. We present an overview of the complex feedstocks used, and pinpoint the main operational parameters for MCCAs production such as temperature, pH, loading rates, inoculum, head space composition, and reactor design. The review evaluates the key findings of MCCA production using MMC, and concludes by identifying critical research targets to drive forward this promising technology as a valorisation method for complex organic waste.
