Pre-treatment and inoculum affect the microbial community structure and enhance the biogas reactor performance in a pilot-scale biodigestion of municipal solid waste

Design of experiments to evaluate pH and temperature parameters with different inoculums in domestic biodigester

The comprehensive management of organic urban solid waste is a concern due to its direct and indirect impact on the environment. Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has been recognized as an alternative and environmentally friendly technology for waste disposal, converting them into organic fertilizers and renewable energy. This research presents an experiment involving four reactors fed with household organic waste, three inoculated with canine, goat, and rabbit manure, and one without inoculum. The experiment was observed for 30 consecutive days to analyze the pH and temperature parameters involved in the AD process in domestic reactors. Statistical methodology, including one-way analysis of variance for assessing the effect of the type of inoculum, Tukey's simultaneous confidence intervals for mean differences, and 90 % confidence intervals for μ in temperature and manure, was utilized. Additionally, main effects analysis of the factors of average temperature and pH were conducted. The results of the one-factor experiment show that the type of inoculum does not significantly influence the variation in pH, while temperature remains relatively stable throughout the AD process. However, the analysis of main effects indicates that goat manure tends to stabilize the temperature with minimal variation, whereas variation is more heterogeneous in the other experiments.

Green synthesis of Fe3O4@ceramsite from sludge improving anaerobic digestion performance of waste activated sludge

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technique for waste management, which can achieve sludge stabilization and energy recovery. This study successfully prepared Fe3O4@ceramsite from WAS and applied it as an additive in sludge digestion, aiming to improve the conversion of organics to biomethane efficiency. Results showed that after adding the Fe3O4@ceramsite, the methane production was enhanced by 34.7% compared with the control group (88.0 ± 0.1 mL/g VS). Further mechanisms investigation revealed that Fe3O4@ceramsite enhanced digesta stability by strong buffering capacity, improved sludge conductivity, and promoted Fe (III) reduction. Moreover, Fe3O4@ceramsite has a larger surface area and better porous structure, which also facilitated AD performance. Microbial community analysis showed that some functional anaerobes related to AD such as Spirochaeta and Smithella were enriched with Fe3O4@ceramsite treatment. Potential syntrophic metabolisms between syntrophic bacteria (Syntrophomonas, associated with DIET) and methanogens were also detected in the Fe3O4@ceramsite treatment AD system.

Inoculation with a microbial consortium increases soil microbial diversity and improves agronomic traits of tomato under water and nitrogen deficiency

Microbial-based biostimulants, functioning as biotic and abiotic stress protectants and growth enhancers, are becoming increasingly important in agriculture also in the context of climate change. The search for new products that can help reduce chemical inputs under a variety of field conditions is the new challenge. In this study, we tested whether the combination of two microbial growth enhancers with complementary modes of action, Azotobacter chroococcum 76A and Trichoderma afroharzianum T22, could facilitate tomato adaptation to a 30% reduction of optimal water and nitrogen requirements. The microbial inoculum increased tomato yield (+48.5%) under optimal water and nutrient conditions. In addition, the microbial application improved leaf water potential under stress conditions (+9.5%), decreased the overall leaf temperature (-4.6%), and increased shoot fresh weight (+15%), indicating that this consortium could act as a positive regulator of plant water relations under limited water and nitrogen availability. A significant increase in microbial populations in the rhizosphere with applications of A. chroococcum 76A and T. afroharzianum T22 under stress conditions, suggested that these inoculants could enhance soil microbial abundance, including the abundance of native beneficial microorganisms. Sampling time, limited water and nitrogen regimes and microbial inoculations all affected bacterial and fungal populations in the rhizospheric soil. Overall, these results indicated that the selected microbial consortium could function as plant growth enhancer and stress protectant, possibly by triggering adaptation mechanisms via functional changes in the soil microbial diversity and relative abundance.

Microbial Activity during Composting and Plant Growth Impact: A Review

Replacing harmful chemical pesticides with compost extracts is steadily gaining attention, offering an effective way for plant growth enhancement and disease management. Food waste has been a major issue globally due to its negative effects on the environment and human health. The methane and other harmful organisms released from the untreated waste have been identified as causes of this issue. Soil bacteria impart a very important role in biogeochemical cycles. The interactions between plants and bacteria in the rhizosphere are some of the factors that determine the health and fertility of the soil. Free-living soil bacteria are known to promote plant growth through colonizing the plant root. PGPR (Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria) inoculants in compost are being commercialized as they help in the improvement of crop growth yield and provide safeguard and resistance to crops from disease. Our focus is to understand the mechanism of this natural, wet waste recycling process and implementation of a sustainable operative adaptation with microbial association to ameliorate the waste recycling system.

How to design an area-based prioritization of biogas production from organic municipal solid waste? Evidence from Thailand

To properly manage municipal solid waste (MSW) and meet the country's biogas target, it is necessary for the government to prioritize their support to areas/provinces that have high resource potential. Therefore, this work designed a holistic approach for nationwide area-based organic MSW to biogas potential estimation. The total biogas power potential was ranged from 999 MW in 2021 to 1,652 MW in 2037. Moreover, priority setting on area-based biogas implementation was proposed, based on its resource potential to efficiently promote such technology. To achieve current biogas target of the country, the study identified 28% of national area coverage as priorities for actual execution, which could offset averagely 3% per year. To support design and planning purposes, an area with around 45,000 capita is recommended for developing 1 MW of MSW to biogas power plant using anaerobic digestion technology. The methodology development from this research revealed the link between resource potential and area-based prioritization framework that could be adopted in any growing economies to couple waste management with renewable energy production.

Organic waste conversion through anaerobic digestion: A critical insight into the metabolic pathways and microbial interactions

Anaerobic digestion is a promising method for energy recovery through conversion of organic waste to biogas and other industrial valuables. However, to tap the full potential of anaerobic digestion, deciphering the microbial metabolic pathway activities and their underlying bioenergetics is required. In addition, the behavior of organisms in consortia along with the analytical abilities to kinetically measure their metabolic interactions will allow rational optimization of the process. This review aims to explore the metabolic bottlenecks of the microbial communities adopting latest advances of profiling and ¹³C tracer-based analysis using state of the art analytical platforms (GC, GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR). The review summarizes the phases of anaerobic digestion, the role of microbial communities, key process parameters of significance, syntrophic microbial interactions and the bottlenecks that are critical for optimal bioenergetics and enhanced production of valuables. Considerations into the designing of efficient synthetic microbial communities as well as the latest advances in capturing their metabolic cross talk will be highlighted. The review further explores how the presence of additives and inhibiting factors affect the metabolic pathways. The critical insight into the reaction mechanism covered in this review may be helpful to optimize and upgrade the anaerobic digestion system.

Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste, Brewery Waste, and Agricultural Residues in an Off-Grid Continuous Reactor

Small-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) can be an effective organic waste management system that also provides energy for small businesses and rural communities. This study measured fuel production from digestions of single and mixed feedstocks using an unheated, 2 m3 digester operated continuously in a temperate climate for over three years. Using local food waste, brewery waste, grease waste, and agricultural residues, this study determined that small-scale AD co-digestions were almost always higher yielding than single feedstocks during psychrophilic operation and seasonal temperature transitions. Agricultural residues from Miscanthus x giganteus had the greatest impact on biomethane production during co-digestion (4.7-fold greater average biogas %CH4), while mesophilic digestion of brewery waste alone produced the most biogas (0.76 gCH4 gVS−1 d−1). Biogas production during the transition from mesophilic to psychrophilic was temporarily maintained at levels similar to mesophilic digestions, particularly during co-digestions, but biogas quality declined during these temperature shifts. Full-time operation of small-scale, unheated AD systems could be feasible in temperate climates if feedstock is intentionally amended to stabilize carbon content.

Perspectives on microbial community in anaerobic digestion with emphasis on environmental parameters: A systematic review

This paper review is aiming to comprehensively identify and appraise the current available knowledge on microbial composition and microbial dynamics in anaerobic digestion with focus on the interconnections between operational parameters and microbial community. We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, pubmed and Embase (up to August 2019) with relative keywords to identify English-language studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The data and information on anaerobic reactor configurations, operational parameters such as pretreatment methods, temperature, trace elements, ammonia, organic loading rate, and feedstock composition and their association with the microbial community and microbial dynamics were extracted from eligible articles. Of 306 potential articles, 112 studies met the present review objectives and inclusion criteria. The results indicated that both aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis are dominant in anaerobic digesters and their relative composition is depending on environmental conditions. However, hydrogenotrophic methanogens are more often observed in extreme conditions due to their higher robustness compared to aceticlastic methangoens. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phyla are most common fermentative bacteria of the acidogenic phase. These bacteria secrete lytic enzymes to degrade organic matters and are able to survive in extreme conditions and environments due to their spores. In addition, among archaea Methanosaeta, Methanobacterium, and Methanosarcinaceae are found at high relative abundance in anaerobic digesters operated with different operational parameters. Overall, understanding the shifts in microbial composition and diversity as results of operational parameters variation in anaerobic digestion process would improve the stability and process performance.

Microbial community composition and metabolic functions in landfill leachate from different landfills of China

Landfill leachate usually harbors complex microbial communities responsible for the decomposition of municipal solid waste. However, the diversity and metabolic functions of the microbial communities in landfill leachate as well as the factors that influence them are still not well understood. In this study, Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the microbial community composition and metabolic functions in landfill leachate from 11 cities in China. The microbial diversity and structure of different leachate samples exhibited obvious differences. In general, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the three dominant microbial communities among the 26 bacterial phyla identified in landfill leachate, regardless of the geographical locations. Diverse bacterial genera associated with various functions such as cellulolytic bacteria (e.g., Sphaerochaeta and Defluviitoga), acidifying bacteria (e.g., Prevotella and Trichococcus) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (e.g., Desulfuromonas and Desulfobacterium) were detected abundantly in the landfill leachate. Moreover, the archaeal community in all leachate samples was dominated by the orders Methanomicrobiales and Methanosarcinales belonging to the Euryarchaeota phylum. Notably, the archaea-specific primer pair covered more diverse archaeal communities than the universal bacteria-archaea primer pair. Seventeen archaeal genera belonging to acetoclastic, hydrogenotrophic, and methylotrophic methanogens were identified, and the composition of the dominant genera in these samples varied greatly. The canonical correlation analysis indicated that landfill age, electrical conductivity, ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen were significantly correlated with the microbial community structure. Based on PICRUSt2, a total of 41 metabolic pathways belonging to six metabolic pathway groups were predicted, and the KEGG pathway Metabolism was the most abundant group across all leachate samples. This study provides an important insight into the composition and functional characteristics of the microbial communities in landfill leachate.

Improving anaerobic digestion of chicken manure under optimized biochar supplementation strategies

Anaerobic digestion of chicken manure was carried out in this study basing on central composite design to identify the most optimal strategy for biochar supplementation. Model of cumulative methane production (CMP) was established by using response surface methodology. The optimal conditions predicted accordingly, including manure loading of 51.8 g VS/L, biochar dosage of 3.3% VS_manure, and cellulose loading of 98.0 g VS/L, were expected to maximize CMP, i.e., 294 mL/g VS_manure. The results also demonstrated that biochar dosage and its interaction with manure loading were key factors with significant impact on CMP. Biochar dosage higher than 3.5% VS_manure was observed to weaken the transformation of organic substances to methane. Higher dosage of biochar could considerably reduce concentration of organic acids, total ammonia nitrogen, as well as soluble salts. Verification experiment supported validity of the optimal strategy and provided data for cost assessment, which showed positive cost balances from biochar supplementation.

Response of Microbial Community to Induced Failure of Anaerobic Digesters Through Overloading With Propionic Acid Followed by Process Recovery

In order to effectively use microbial-based strategies to manage anaerobic digesters, it is necessary to distinguish between community shifts that are part of the natural dynamic of the system and shifts caused by environmental or operational disturbances. The objective of this research study was to evaluate the significance of changes in the microbial community of anaerobic digesters during failure in correlation to operational parameters such as an organic acid overload. Five continuously stirred 0.5 L reactors were set-up as semi-continuously-fed, mesophilic dairy manure digesters with a 30-day hydraulic retention time. After a 120-day stabilization period, two digesters were kept as controls, while the organic loading rates in the triplicate set were increased step-wise to ultimately provide a shock-load leading to failure using propionic acid spikes. Acidosis resulting in near cessation of biogas and termination of methane production occurred between 4 and 7 weeks, after which all the digesters continued to be fed only dairy manure. The shock loading of propionic acid led to an accumulation of mainly acetate and propionate, with low levels of iso-butyrate, butyrate, iso-valerate, and valerate. High-throughput Illumina sequencing of the V4 region of the bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene in digester samples showed a significant change in the microbial community composition during propionic acid overload, followed by a return to the original composition with regular feedstock. Bacterial genera whose relative abundance decreased during the inhibition stage included Sedimentibacter, Syntrophomonas, TSCOR003.O20, and Marinilabiaceae, while the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcus, Mogibacteriaceae, Pyramidobacter, and Bacteroides increased. The relative abundance of dominant methanogens, Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium, although initially resistant, were decreased (from 91.71 to 12.14% and from 2.98 to 0.73%, respectively) during inhibition, while Methanobrevibacter and Methanosphaera that were prominent in the manure feedstock increased from 17.36 to 79.45% and from 0.14 to 1.12%, respectively. Shifts in bacterial and archaeal compositions, back to their pre-shock steady state after failure, highlight the digester's microbial resilience and recovery potential.

Comparison of microbial communities during anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste: Effect of substrate sources and temperatures

In this study, batch experiments were conducted to compare the effect of temperature and substrate source on microbial communities in the anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste. The results showed that the microbial communities of anaerobic digestion were not sensitive to varied sources of waste, but shifted with the change in operating temperatures. In the reactors operated at mesophilic conditions, Levilinea, Syntrophomonas, Methanothrix, and Methanosphaerula, etc. were the dominant microbes during the process. While in thermophilic reactors, Levilinea, Ornatilinea, Methanosphaerula and Methanomassiliicoccus, etc. prevailed. Meanwhile, an enrichment in Coprothermobacter, Defluviitoga, Defluviitalea, Tepidimicrobium, Lutispora and Fonticella were observed as the temperature changed from mesophilic to thermophilic, suggesting these genera could be selectively enriched at thermophilic conditions. The results provided fundamental understanding of the microbiology that could support the scale up of food waste anaerobic digestion.

P-Solubilizing Streptomyces roseocinereus MS1B15 With Multiple Plant Growth-Promoting Traits Enhance Barley Development and Regulate Rhizosphere Microbial Population

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) have been reported to increase phosphate (P) content and plant growth. Their application in agricultural systems is an eco-friendly alternative strategy for limiting negative environmental impact of chemical fertilizers and increasing costs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate and characterize new putative PSB to use as inoculum to enhance plant growth and increase P bioavailability in soil. Sixteen bacteria were isolated from Moroccan oat rhizosphere and were screened for their putative P-solubilization by semi-quantitative agar spot method. The two strains MS1B15 and MS1B13, identified as Streptomyces roseocinereus and Streptomyces natalensis, respectively, showed the maximum phosphate solubilization index (PSI = 1.75 and PSI = 1.63). After quantitative assay to determine phosphate solubilization activity, S. roseocinereus MS1B15 was selected for evaluating its putative plant growth promotion activities including production of siderophores, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, nitrogen fixation and antimicrobial activity against soil-borne plant pathogens. Under greenhouse condition, barley plants inoculated with S. roseocinereus MS1B15 significantly increased shoot and ear length as well as available phosphorus in ears and leaves and P and N contents in the soil. Overall results showed that the selected strain S. roseocinereus MS1B15 could represent a potential candidate as biofertilizer to increase plant growth as well as P uptake.

Microbial Air Quality in Neighborhoods near Landfill Sites: Implications for Public Health

Air pollution has been a major challenge worldwide particularly in the developing world. Improper waste disposal and management may result in microbial air pollution. In advanced countries, landfill sites are far from neighborhoods; however, the opposite is observed for landfill sites in the developing world. In Accra, some landfill sites are 100 meters from neighborhoods. The aim of this study was to assess the microbial air quality and associated environmental health hazards of landfill sites in selected districts in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. A random sampling method was employed to select sampling sites across the dry and wet seasons from landfills and their corresponding neighborhoods. Results obtained showed a higher total count (CFU/m³) of bacteria and fungi in the air at the landfill sites than neighborhoods. Statistically significant variation (p < 0.05) in bacterial and fungal concentrations over two seasons was found for both landfills and neighborhoods. However, bacterial concentrations were significantly higher than fungal concentrations (p < 0.05) across seasons for all locations. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the highest (15.6 %) occurring microbe at both landfill sites and neighborhoods. This was followed by Staphylococcus aureus (12.7%). Other bacteria and fungi of public health importance such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus niger were also isolated from the study sites, above the WHO recommended levels. In conclusion, the landfill waste disposal and its close proximity to neighborhoods as observed in this study pose a potential environmental health risk, with dire implications for public health and safety. The government must enact and implement policies to regulate waste management and to ensure public safety.

Production and characterization of β-glucosidase from Aspergillus niger fermentation: Application for organic fraction of municipal solid waste hydrolysis and methane enhancement

The anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is currently an attractive treatment process with energy production in the form of biogas. Hydrolysis is the rate-limiting step for the anaerobic digestion of solid wastes. Thus, in the present study fungal enzymatic pretreatment of OFMSW was applied to enhance biogas production. Two enzyme cocktails rich on β-glucosidase were produced from submerged fermentation of Aspergillus niger on basal medium using OFMSW as carbon source and urea (Urea cocktail) and Ulva rigida as nitrogen source (Ulva cocktail). Ulva cocktail displayed an important effect on OFMSW solubilization. Therefore, an increase of reducing sugar concentration about 60% was obtained which was in correlation with chemical oxygen demand (COD) increase. The performance of enzymatic pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of OFMSW was studied by conducting biochemical methane potential tests. Results showed that the enzymatic pretreatment improved methane yield of OFMSW even at high solid concentration. High methane yield about 500 ml/g total volatile solid was obtained, which corresponds up to 68% enhancement over the control.

Anaerobic Process for Bioenergy Recovery From Dairy Waste: Meta-Analysis and Enumeration of Microbial Community Related to Intermediates Production

Dairy wastes are widely studied for the hydrogen and methane production, otherwise the changes in microbial communities related to intermediate valuable products was not deeply investigated. Culture independent techniques are useful tools for exploring microbial communities in engineered system having new insights into their structure and function as well as potential industrial application. The deep knowledge of the microbiota involved in the anaerobic process of specific waste and by-products represents an essential step to better understand the entire process and the relation of each microbial population with biochemical intermediates and final products. Therefore, this study investigated the microbial communities involved in the laboratory-scale anaerobic digestion of a mixture of mozzarella cheese whey and buttermilk amended with 5% w/v of industrial animal manure pellets. Culture-independent methods by employing high-throughput sequencing and microbial enumerations highlighted that lactic acid bacteria, such as Lactobacillaceae and Streptococcaceae dominated the beginning of the process until about day 14 when a relevant increase in hydrogen production (more than 10 ml H₂ gVS^-1 from days 13 to 14) was observed. Furthermore, during incubation a gradual decrease of lactic acid bacteria was detected with a simultaneous increase of Clostridia, such as Clostridiaceae and Tissierellaceae families. Moreover, archaeal populations in the biosystem were strongly related to inoculum since the non-inoculated samples of the dairy waste mixture had a relative abundance of archaea less than 0.1%; whereas, in the inoculated samples of the same mixture several archaeal genera were identified. Among methanogenic archaea, Methanoculleus was the dominant genus during all the process especially when the methane production occurred, and its relative abundance increased up to 99% at the end of the incubation time highlighting that methane was formed from dairy wastes primarily by the hydrogenotrophic pathway in the reactors.

The effect of bacterial and archaeal populations on anaerobic process fed with mozzarella cheese whey and buttermilk

Dairy wastes can be conveniently processed and valorized in a biorefinery value chain since they are abundant, zero-cost and all year round available. For a comprehensive knowledge of the microbial species involved in producing biofuels and valuable intermediates from dairy wastes, the changes in bacterial and archaeal population were evaluated when H₂, CH₄ and chemical intermediates were produced. Batch anaerobic tests were conducted with a mixture of mozzarella cheese whey and buttermilk as organic substrate, inoculated with 1% and 3% w/v industrial animal manure pellets. The archaeal methanogens concentration increased in the test inoculated at 3% (w/v) when H₂ and CH₄ production occurred, being 1 log higher than that achieved in the test inoculated at 1% (w/v). Many archaeal species, mostly involved in the production of CH₄, were identified by sequencing denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) bands. Methanoculleus, Methanocorpusculum and Methanobrevibacter genera were dominant archaea involved in the anaerobic process for bioenergy production from mozzarella cheese whey and buttermilk mixture.

Pilot-Scale Anaerobic Co-Digestion of the OFMSW: Improving Biogas Production and Startup

This paper presents experimental results regarding anaerobic co-digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and fruit and vegetable waste in order to establish the efficiency of a 2 m3 volume pilot plant in terms of biogas and methane yield and stability of the process. The research study presents the feasibility of developing anaerobic digestion as an effective method for municipal solid waste management. The experiments were conducted in mesophilic conditions (35 °C). Domestic waste water was used as inoculum. The results showed that the inoculum presence, temperature, and pH control, were essential in order to improve biogas production and its composition. Using liquid inoculum, the CH4 percentage in the biogas oscillated between 44% and 51%, and the biogas production from 0.504 and 0.6 m3/day. Compared to domestic waste water, animal manure increased the CH4 concentration in biogas (up to 63%), while the daily biogas production increased by 26% and varied from 0.693 to 0.786 m3. The cumulative biogas production at the end of the experiments were 11.7 m3 and 15.89 m3, respectively. Using inoculum and co-digestion, the plant startup time was significantly reduced, the total solids content decreased from 22.7% to 19.8%, while the volatile solids decreased from 37.6% to 31.2%.

Trichoderma-Based Biostimulants Modulate Rhizosphere Microbial Populations and Improve N Uptake Efficiency, Yield, and Nutritional Quality of Leafy Vegetables

Microbial inoculants such as Trichoderma-based products are receiving great interest among researchers and agricultural producers for their potential to improve crop productivity, nutritional quality as well as resistance to plant pathogens/pests and numerous environmental stresses. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the effects of Trichoderma-based biostimulants under suboptimal, optimal and supraoptimal levels of nitrogen (N) fertilization in two leafy vegetables: Iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.). The yield, nutritional characteristics, N uptake and mineral composition were analyzed for each vegetable crop after inoculation with Trichoderma strains T. virens (GV41) or T. harzianum (T22), and results were compared to non-inoculated plants. In addition, the effect of the Trichoderma-based biostimulants on microbes associated with the rhizosphere in terms of prokaryotic and eukaryotic composition and concentration using DGGE was also evaluated. Trichoderma-based biostimulants, in particular GV41, positively increased lettuce and rocket yield in the unfertilized plots. The highest marketable lettuce fresh yield was recorded with either of the biostimulant inoculations when plants were supplied with optimal levels of N. The inoculation of rocket with GV41, and to a lesser degree with T22, elicited an increase in total ascorbic acid under both optimal and high N conditions. T. virens GV41 increased N-use efficiency of lettuce, and favored the uptake of native N present in the soil of both lettuce and rocket. The positive effect of biostimulants on nutrient uptake and crop growth was species-dependent, being more marked with lettuce. The best biostimulation effects from the Trichoderma treatments were observed in both crops when grown under low N availability. The Trichoderma inoculation strongly influenced the composition of eukaryotic populations in the rhizosphere, in particularly exerting different effects with low N levels in comparison to the N fertilized plots. Overall, inoculations with Trichoderma may be considered as a viable strategy to manage the nutrient content of leafy horticulture crops cultivated in low fertility soils, and assist vegetable growers in reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers, developing sustainable management practices to optimize N use efficiency.
