In-depth comparison of morphology, microstructure, and pathway of char derived from sewage sludge and relevant model compounds

Ionic liquid catalyzed low-temperature hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge to produce hydrochar with low heavy metal content and positive energy recovery

An ionic liquid (IL, [DMAPA]HSO4) was prepared to facilitate the removal of heavy metals by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in sewage sludge (SS) and to obtain a positive energy recovery (ER, (Energyoutput/Energyinput - 1) > 0). The results found that the removal efficiencies of the Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, and Cd from SS exceeded 75 % with positive ER (6 %) at 20 wt% IL dosage (IL:SS). IL promoted the HTC reactions of proteins and polysaccharides to produce fixed carbon and small molecule polymers. The process mainly relies on IL to catalyze the dehydration and graphitization of SS and to destroy the heavy metal binding sites such as carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Additionally, IL aids in constructing the macropore structures in hydrochar, thereby facilitating the release of heavy metals and water during the HTC process. This discovery holds promise for removing heavy metals from SS by one-pot HTC processes with positive energy recovery.

Adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) by N, S co-doped porous carbon from sewage sludge and low-rank coal: Combining experiments and theoretical calculations

Herein, a novel N, S co-doped porous carbon (S5C5-AC) for Cr(VI) removal was prepared by co-hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge (SS) and low-rank coal (LC) combining with KOH modification. The results showed that S5C5-AC had excellent adsorption performance on Cr(VI), and lower pH value, higher initial concentration and longer contact time were beneficial for Cr(VI) adsorption. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption by S5C5-AC was homogeneous and dominated by chemisorption. The adsorption isotherm showed that the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of S5C5-AC for Cr(VI) was 382.04 mg/g at 25 °C. Furthermore, the results showed that the main mechanisms for Cr(VI) removal were the pore filling, electrostatic interaction and reduction. Moreover, the electron transfer mechanism during the adsorption and reduction process was further explored at the molecular and electronic levels by density functional theory (DFT) and front orbital theory (FOT) simulations. The analysis of DFT and FOT indicated that the synergistic effect between S and N functional groups was exhibited during the Cr(VI) removal process. Considering the existence of synergistic effects between N and S functional groups during adsorption, the S and N content and form were modified collaboratively. Increasing the relative content of pyrrolic N may be the most effective pathway for improving removal performance. Besides that, S5C5-AC exhibited excellent adsorption capacity over a high coexisting ion concentration range and various actual water bodies and regeneration performance, which indicated that S5C5-AC had promising potential for the remediation of wastewater in industrial applications.

Seawater as supplemental moisture: The effect of Co-hydrothermal carbonization products obtained from chicken manure and cornstalk

The use of seawater as a substitute for pure water as supplemental moisture raises questions about its effect on the physicochemical properties of hydrochar. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using seawater as supplemental moisture by comparing the physicochemical properties of products obtained through Co-hydrothermal carbonization of chicken manure and cornstalk under seawater and deionized water conditions. By varying the HTC temperature and blending ratios of CM and CS to investigate comprehensively the effect of seawater. Results indicated that the hydrochar yield experienced a variation from 54.54% to 57.40%, while the IC value changed from 7.69% to 8.46% as the ratio of CM:CS shifted from 3:1 to 1:3 under seawater conditions. The higher heating value of the hydrochars obtained under seawater conditions was lower than those obtained under deionized water conditions. This suggests that seawater conditions promote the hydrolysis reaction of organic solid waste. Furthermore, it was observed that when no lignin hydrolysis reaction occurred, seawater conditions had no discernible effect on the fuel quality of the hydrochar. However, at an HTC temperature of 250 °C, the fuel quality of the hydrochar obtained under seawater conditions was notably inferior to that of the hydrochar obtained under deionized water. Thus, an HTC temperature lower than 250 °C is necessary for the hydrothermal carbonization of organic solid waste under seawater conditions. Moreover, the relative content of surface -C-(C, H)/CC of the hydrochar obtained under seawater conditions was lower than that obtained under deionized water conditions, indicating that the hydrochar had a low degree of aromatization. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the immobilized Mg atoms in the hydrochar under seawater conditions, which affected the hydrochar yield and higher heating value of the hydrochar. This research presents a theoretical foundation for preparing solid fuels and materials using hydrothermal carbonization of saltwater as supplemental moisture.

Target-prepared sludge biochar-derived synergistic Mn and N/O induces high-performance periodate activation for reactive iodine radicals generation towards ofloxacin degradation

Converting waste activated sludge into catalysts for the removal of antibiotics in water fulfils the dual purpose of waste-to-resource and hazardous pollution elimination. In this study, sludge-derived biochar (SDB) for efficient periodate (PI) activation was first prepared via one-step pyrolysis of potassium permanganate-polyhexamethylenebiguanide conditioned sludge without additional modification. The SDB (750 °C)-PI system degraded 100% ofloxacin (OFL, 41.5 μM) within 6 min and was almost undisturbed by inorganic ions or humic acids. The experimental results confirmed that the predominant role of reactive iodine species (RIS) and the auxiliary involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) jointly contributed to the OFL degradation. Theoretical calculations further indicated that the synergy between Mn and N/O induced local charge redistribution and improved electron transfer capability of SDB, leading to the formation of electron-rich Mn sites and enhanced Mn(II)↔Mn(III)↔Mn(IV) redox to promote PI activation. More importantly, the enhanced adsorption and charge transfer of PI on the Mn site of the Mn-N/O-C structures induced the I-O bond stretching and the rapid generation of RIS. This study offered a cost-effective strategy for developing SDB-based catalysts, further advancing the comprehension of sludge management and the intricate mechanisms underlying RIS formation in PI-advanced oxidation processes.

Optimizing adsorption performance of sludge-derived biochar via inherent moisture-regulated physicochemical properties

Understanding the impact of abundant inherent moisture in sewage sludge on the physicochemical properties and adsorption applications of sludge-derived biochar (SDB) contributed significantly to promoting economical sludge reuse. The moisture (0-80%) contributed to the development of micropore and mesopore in SDB at 400 °C, resulting in a maximum increase in specific surface area (SSA) and total pore volume (TPV) of SDB by 38.47% (84.811-117.437 m2/g) and 92.60% (0.0905-0.1743 m3/g), respectively. At 600/800 °C, moisture only facilitated mesopore formation, while was exacerbated with increasing moisture content. Despite reduction in SSA during this stage, TPV increased by a maximum of 20.47% (0.1700-0.2048 m3/g). The presence of moisture during pyrolysis led to an increase in the formation of 3-5 thickened benzene rings and defective structures in SDB, along with more C=O, O-C=O/-OH, pyrrole N, pyridine N, and thiophene. As a result, moisture (40%/80%) increased the maximum adsorption capacity (76.2694-88.0448/90.1190 mg/g) of SDB (600 °C) for tetracycline, mainly due to enhanced pore filling effect and hydrogen bonding induced by improved physicochemical properties. This study offered a novel approach for optimizing the performance of SDB adsorption applications by manipulating the sludge moisture, which is critical for practical sludge management.

Catalytic hydrothermal carbonization of wet organic solid waste: A review

Hydrothermal carbonization has gained attention in converting wet organic solid waste into hydrochar with many applications such as solid fuel, energy storage material precursor, fertilizer or soil conditioner. Recently, various catalysts such as organic and inorganic catalysts are employed to guide the properties of the hydrochar. This review presents a summarize and a critical discussion on types of catalysts, process parameters and catalytic mechanisms. The catalytic impact of carboxylic acids is related to their acidity level and the number of carboxylic groups. The catalysis level with strong mineral acids is likely related to the number of hydronium ions liberated from their hydrolysis. The impact of inorganic salts is determined by the Lewis acidity of the cation. The metallic ions in metallic salts may incorporate into the hydrochar and increase the ash of the hydrochar. The selection of catalysts for various applications of hydrochars and the environmental and the techno-economic aspects of the process are also presented. Although some catalysts might enhance the characteristics of hydrochar for various applications, these catalysts may also result in considerable carbon loss, particularly in the case of organic acid catalysts, which may potentially ruin the overall advantage of the process. Overall, depending on the expected application of the hydrochar, the type of catalyst and the amount of catalyst loading requires careful consideration. Some recommendations are made for future investigations to improve laboratory-scale process comprehension and understanding of pathways as well as to encourage widespread industrial adoption.

A sustainable reuse strategy of converting waste activated sludge into biochar for contaminants removal from water: Modifications, applications and perspectives

Conversion of sewage sludge to biochar for contaminants removal from water achieves the dual purpose of solid waste reuse and pollution elimination, in line with the concept of circular economy and carbon neutrality. However, the current understanding of sludge-derived biochar (SDB) for wastewater treatment is still limited, with a lack of summary regarding the effect of modification on the mechanism of SDB adsorption/catalytic removal aqueous contaminants. To advance knowledge in this aspect, this paper systematically reviews the recent studies on the use of (modified) SDB as adsorbents and in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) as catalysts for the contaminants removal from water over the past five years. Unmodified SDB not only exhibits stronger cation exchange and surface precipitation for heavy metals due to its nitrogen/mineral-rich properties, but also can provide abundant catalytic active sites for PS. An emphatic summary of how certain adsorption removal mechanisms of SDB or its catalytic performance in PS-AOPs can be enhanced by targeted regulation/modification such as increasing the specific surface area, functional groups, graphitization degree, N-doping or transition metal loading is presented. The interference of inorganic ions/natural organic matter is one of the unavoidable challenges that SDB is used for adsorption/catalytic removal of contaminants in real wastewater. Finally, this paper presents the future perspectives of SDB in the field of wastewater treatment. This review can contribute forefront knowledge and new ideas for advancing sludge treatment toward sustainable green circular economy.

Composting and Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste and Sewage Sludge for Campus Sustainability: A Review

Composting and anaerobic digestion have emerged as better options for managing food waste and sewage sludge at the campus level. This review highlights the characteristics of food waste and sewage sludge from various global higher education institutions. The composting and anaerobic digestion processes of food waste and sewage sludge will be reviewed and evaluated. Also, the adoption of composting and anaerobic digestion at various campus levels has been reviewed. The challenges and future direction, focusing on managing university campus composting and anaerobic digestion, are discussed as well. This review paper will significantly contribute to the understanding of the potential for managing and handling campus waste in a natural-friendly manner.

Recent Development in Sludge Biochar-Based Catalysts for Advanced Oxidation Processes of Wastewater

Sewage sludge as waste of the wastewater treatment process contains toxic substances, and its conversion into sludge biochar-based catalysts is a promising strategy that merges the merits of waste reutilization and environmental cleanup. This study aims to systematically recapitulate the published articles on the development of sludge biochar-based catalysts in different advanced oxidation processes of wastewater, including sulfate-based system, Fenton-like systems, photocatalysis, and ozonation systems. Due to abundant functional groups, metal phases and unique structures, sludge biochar-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic behavior for decontamination in advanced oxidation systems. In particular, the combination of sludge and pollutant dopants manifests a synergistic effect. The catalytic mechanisms of as-prepared catalysts in these systems are also investigated. Furthermore, initial solution pH, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and coexisting anions have a vital role in advanced oxidation processes, and these parameters are systematically summarized. In summary, this study could provide relatively comprehensive and up-to-date messages for the application of sludge biochar-based catalysts in the advanced oxidation processes of wastewater treatment.

Mechanical compression assisted conductive drying of thin-film dewatered sewage sludge: Process performance, heat and mass transfer behavior

The improvement in heat transfer efficiency between the hot wall and sewage sludge was a critical issue to enhance the conductive drying performance. The drying behavior of thin-film dewatered sewage sludge was investigated based on a conductive dryer assisted with mechanical compression at hot wall temperatures of 120-210 °C. The heat and mass transfer behavior of the sludge in the conductive drying process alone was compared to those in the mechanical compression assisted conductive drying process at three external mechanical loads of 25, 100, and 200 kPa. The average drying rates with mechanical compression were higher than those without mechanical load and were enhanced with the increase of mechanical loads at 210 °C. The extrusion of interfacial vapor film and the reduction of sludge surface roughness was responsible for the enhanced interfacial heat transfer efficiency under mechanical compression. The effective moisture diffusivity, mass transfer coefficient, and effective thermal conductivity were enhanced by mechanical compression. The improved moisture transfer inside sludge and on the open surface, and the decreased heat transfer resistance of sludge was due to the generated pressure-driven flow and the reduced gas cavities in sludge, resulting in the higher drying rates. Additionally, this finding provided reference data for developing a new sludge drying method.

New insights into impact of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment temperature and time on sewage sludge: Structure and composition of sewage sludge from sewage treatment plant

This work investigated the effects of THP temperature (140-200 °C) and time (10-60 min) on the surface morphology, pyrolysis properties, and soluble compounds of dewatered sludge. Results indicate that higher temperature and longer pretreatment time considerably improve organics hydrolysis (the SCOD content increased 1.4-2.46 times, increasing 2.46 times at 200 °C). In addition, high temperature also improved the sludge pyrolysis efficiency (the highest at 200 °C), and reduced the harmful gas release, especially HCN. Moreover, the surface morphology of the sludge changed, the gap and floccules on the surface of the sludge increased. The carbohydrate content increased the highest; approximately 91.9% at 170 °C. THP promoted the decomposition of the nitrogen compounds in the sludge and facilitated their transition to a liquid phase. The total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen content doubled, and the organic nitrogen content decreased by 50% with time increased from 10 to 60 min.
