A comprehensive review on the preparation of biochar from digestate sources and its application in environmental pollution remediation

The preparation of biochar from digestate is one of the effective ways to achieve the safe disposal and resource utilization of digestate. Nevertheless, up to now, a comprehensive review encompassing the factors influencing anaerobic digestate-derived biochar production and its applications is scarce in the literature. Therefore, to fill this gap, the present work first outlined the research hotspots of digestate in the last decade using bibliometric statistical analysis with the help of VOSviewer. Then, the characteristics of the different sources of digestate were summarized. Furthermore, the influencing factors of biochar preparation from digestate and the modification methods of digestate-derived biochar and associated mechanisms were analyzed. Notably, a comprehensive synthesis of anaerobic digestate-derived biochar applications is provided, encompassing enhanced anaerobic digestion, heavy metal remediation, aerobic composting, antibiotic/antibiotic resistance gene removal, and phosphorus recovery from digestate liquor. The economic and environmental impacts of digestate-derived biochar were also analyzed. Finally, the development prospect and challenges of using biochar from digestate to combat environmental pollution are foreseen. The aim is to not only address digestate management challenges at the source but also offer a novel path for the resourceful utilization of digestate.

Reshaping environmental sustainability: Poultry by-products digestate valorization for enhanced biochar performance in methylene blue removal

Anaerobic digestion is a highly effective and innovative method for treating organic waste while simultaneously generating energy. However, the treatment of the resulting digestate remains a challenging endeavor. To address this issue, poultry by-products digestate is used in this study to prepare biochars at two different pyrolysis temperatures (500/600 °C). Despite their potential, the utilization of untreated biochar is restricted due to its inadequate adsorption capacity. Therefore, each biochar was chemically activated using either HNO3 or KOH to synthesize four activated biochars (BC5@KOH, BC6@HNO3, BC5@HNO3, and BC6@HNO3). The aim is to investigate how the nature of chemical activation and pyrolysis temperature influence the adsorption of methylene blue dye. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman analysis, and pHpzc determination, were exploited to comprehensively elucidate the structure and composition of both unprocessed and chemically activated biochars. Among the activated biochars, the adsorbent BC5@HNO3 exhibits the highest methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity, reaching 101.72 mg.g-1 at 298 K under (pH = 2, ads dose = 0.6 g.L-1, shaking time of 20 min, as optimal conditions for MB adsorption. Adsorption data for each adsorbent strongly aligns with both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism of MB dye was explored using various analytical techniques, including FTIR, SEM, PZC, and pH impact assessment. The findings suggest correlations with electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, pore filling, as well as n-π and π-π interactions. Apparently, activated biochars play a crucial role in efficiently removing methylene blue dye, showcasing their potential as environmentally friendly and effective adsorbents.

Synthesis of modified sludge biochar for flue gas denitration: Biochar properties, synergistic efficiency and mechanism

Biochar has been recommended as a carbon material with high porosity, rich functional groups, and low cost for flue gas denitration. In this study, five different biochar materials, including original sludge biochar (SC), the KOH-impregnated biochar (SCK), the biochar of SCK washing by ultra-water (SCK-W), the H2SO4-impregnated biochar (SCS), and the biochar of SCS washing by ultra-water (SCS-W), prepared using a one-step activation method were applied to remove NO from flue gases, acting as both reductants and catalysts. The results indicate that the SCK-700 can lead to the highest NO conversion of 100% at 325 °C, and can suppress the acidic gas generation compared with SCS. The order of reduction capacity at 300-400 °C was SCK-700 > SCK-W-700 > SC-700 > SCS-700 > SCS-W-700. Furthermore, the kinetics indicated that adsorption capacity enhanced with the rise in temperature, and that SCK-700 had the largest adsorption capacity, reaching 337.15 mg/g at 400 °C.

Digestate-derived carbonized char and activated carbon: Application perspective

The flourishment of anaerobic digestion (AD) on waste treatment emphasizes the importance of digestate valorization, which plays an essential role in determining the benefits provided by the AD process. The perception of digestate gradually shifts from waste to products to realize the concept of circular economy and maximize the benefits of digestate valorization. This review first outlined the current status of digestate valorization, focusing on thermal-chemical methods. The novel valorization methods were then summarized from the recent research, illustrating prospects for digestate valorization. Limits and perspectives are finally addressed. Methods for preparing digestate-derived activated carbon and impurity effects were elucidated. Inherent mineral content/inorganic impurity could be a niche for downstream use. High surface area and well-developed pore structure are essential for satisfying downstream use performance, but they are not the only factors. Digestate char applications other than use as an energy fuel are suggested.

Combustion kinetics of hydrochar from cow-manure digestate via thermogravimetric analysis and peak deconvolution

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) can convert wet biomass into hydrochar (HC), a solid carbonaceous material exploitable as fuel. In this study, HTC was applied to anaerobic digestate from cow manure. HCs obtained at three HTC temperatures (180, 220, 250 °C) were characterized in detail and their combustion behavior was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with peak deconvolution. Increasing HTC temperatures increased the fixed carbon content (17.9-20.7%), the ash content (27.2-32.5%) and the calorific value (14.3-18.2 MJ/kg), while decreased the hydrogen (5.01-4.54%) and oxygen content (24.09-12.35%) of HCs. DTG profiles peak deconvolution unveils the presence of five major components in the HCs. HCs combustion kinetics were studied applying the KAS method. Average apparent activation energy values of 100, 88, 67 kJ mol^-1 were obtained for HC180, HC220, HC250, respectively. HTC at 250 °C produced the HC with the best fuel characteristics.

Hydrochar and hydrochar co-compost from OFMSW digestate for soil application: 1. production and chemical characterization

The best available technique (BAT) for managing the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is represented by anaerobic digestion (AD) and subsequent composting. This research explored a new industrial model in the framework of the C2Land international project, with the insertion of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a post-treatment for OFMSW digestate. The reaction was set for 3 h at three different temperatures (180 ÷ 220 °C); the wet solid hydrochar obtained after filtration was then co-composted with greenery waste as a bulking agent and untreated OFMSW digestate in four different proportions in bench-scale bioreactors. The hydrochars and the hydrochar co-composts were suitable for agro-industrial applications, while the HTC liquors were tested in biochemical methane potential (BMP) for internal recirculation to AD. The scenarios proposed can be beneficial for plant enhancement and increased biogas production. This study reports results connected to the production phase. Mass balances confirmed that, during HTC, phosphorus precipitated into the solid products, organic nitrogen partially mineralized into ammonium, and oxidizable organic matter solubilized. The selected hydrochar obtained at 200 °C had mean (dry) solid, liquid, and gaseous yields equal to 77, 20, and 3 %_db, respectively. The dynamic respirometric index (DRI) confirmed that the reproduced BAT for the composting process was effective in producing high-quality hydrochar co-composts in terms of biological stability. The BMP tests on HTC liquors showed some inhibitory effects, suggesting the need for future studies with inoculum adaptation and co-digestion, to dilute toxic compounds and enhance biogas production. Part 2 of this study describes the agro-environmental properties of hydrochars and hydrochar co-composts, including the beneficial effect of composting on hydrochars phytotoxicity.

Improving nutrients removal and energy recovery from wastes using hydrochar

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an eco-friendly, flexible and efficient way to valorise wet solid wastes, producing a carbon-rich material named as hydrochar. Considerable efforts have been devoted to studying the feasibility of using hydrochar in waste management to achieve the goal of circular economy. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of hydrochar on energy recovery from anaerobic digestion (AD), nutrient reclamation, and wastewater treatment is currently lacking. To understand the influence of hydrochar type on its application, this review will firstly introduce the mechanisms and biomass treatment for hydrochar preparation. Most recent studies regarding the improvement of methane (CH₄) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production after dosing hydrochar in anaerobic digesters are quantitatively summarized and deeply discussed. The potential of using various hydrochar as slow-fertilizer to support the growth of plants are analysed by providing quantitative data. The usage of hydrochar in remediating pollutants from wastewater as effective adsorbent is also evaluated. Based on the review, we also address the challenges and demonstrate the opportunities for the future application of hydrochar in waste management. Conclusively, this review will not only provide a systematic understanding of the up-to-date developments of improving the nutrients removal and energy recovery from wastes by using hydrochar but also several new directions for the application of hydrochar in the future.

Valorization of anaerobic digestion digestate: A prospect review

Anaerobic digestion is recognized as promising technology for bioenergy production from biowaste, with huge quantity of digestate being produced as the residual waste. The digestate contains substantial amounts of organic and inorganic matters that be considered highly risky contaminants to the receiving environments if not properly treated, but also potential renewable resources if are adequately recovered. This prospect review summarized the current research efforts on digestate valorization, including aspects of resource recovery and the proposed applications, particularly on the conversion techniques and economic feasibility. The prospects for digestate valorization were highlighted at the end of this review.

The valorization of the anaerobic digestate from the organic fractions of municipal solid waste: Challenges and perspectives

The anaerobic digestion is a well-established process for the treatment of organic solid waste, pursuing its conversion into a methane rich gas destined to energy generation. Research has largely dealt with the enhancement of the overall bioconversion yields, providing several strategies to maximize the production of bio-methane from the anaerobic processing of a wide variety of substrates. Nevertheless, the valorization of the process effluents should be pursued as well, especially if the anaerobic digestion is regarded in the light of the circular economy principles. Aim of this work is in identifying the state of the art of the strategies to manage the digestate from the anaerobic processing of the organic fractions of municipal solid waste. Conventional approaches are described and novel solutions are figured out in order to highlight their potential scale up as well as to address future research perspectives.

Study of the Potential of Water Treatment Sludges in the Removal of Emerging Pollutants

Presently, water quantity and quality problems persist both in developed and developing countries, and concerns have been raised about the presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in water. The circular economy provides ways of achieving sustainable resource management that can be implemented in the water sector, such as the reuse of drinking water treatment sludges (WTSs). This study evaluated the potential of WTS containing a high concentration of activated carbon for the removal of two EPs: the steroid hormones 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). To this end, WTSs from two Portuguese water treatment plants (WTPs) were characterised and tested for their hormone adsorbance potential. Both WTSs showed a promising adsorption potential for the two hormones studied due to their textural and chemical properties. For WTS1, the final concentration for both hormones was lower than the limit of quantification (LOQ). As for WTS2, the results for E2 removal were similar to WTS1, although for EE2, the removal efficiency was lower (around 50%). The overall results indicate that this method may lead to new ways of using this erstwhile residue as a possible adsorbent material for the removal of several EPs present in wastewaters or other matrixes, and as such contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets.

Hydrothermal Carbonization as a Valuable Tool for Energy and Environmental Applications: A Review

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) represents an efficient and valuable pre-treatment technology to convert waste biomass into highly dense carbonaceous materials that could be used in a wide range of applications between energy, environment, soil improvement and nutrients recovery fields. HTC converts residual organic materials into a solid high energy dense material (hydrochar) and a liquid residue where the most volatile and oxygenated compounds (mainly furans and organic acids) concentrate during reaction. Pristine hydrochar is mainly used for direct combustion, to generate heat or electricity, but highly porous carbonaceous media for energy storage or for adsorption of pollutants applications can be also obtained through a further activation stage. HTC process can be used to enhance recovery of nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorous in particular and can be used as soil conditioner, to favor plant growth and mitigate desertification of soils. The present review proposes an outlook of the several possible applications of hydrochar produced from any sort of waste biomass sources. For each of the applications proposed, the main operative parameters that mostly affect the hydrochar properties and characteristics are highlighted, in order to match the needs for the specific application.
