Recovery of iron from iron tailings by suspension magnetization roasting with biomass-derived pyrolytic gas

The enrichment and transformation mechanism of Pb and Cu in suspension magnetization roasting and magnetic separation from iron tailings

Magnetic iron concentrate (MIC) and nonmagnetic tailings (NT) are obtained from magnetization roasting of iron tailings (IT). MIC containing Pb adversely affects blast furnace ironmaking, while Cu in NT poses leaching risks. This study utilizes fast pyrolysis-suspension magnetization roasting to recover iron from IT. The enrichment of Pb, Cu, and the phase transformation mechanism of Cu in the process of suspension magnetization roasting and magnetic separation were clarified. Results show 96.13 % of Cu in IT is in limonite and 47.23 % of Pb is associated with iron. At 750 °C, with 10 % dosage of biomass pyrolysis and 10 min roasting, Pb, Cu and Fe contents in MIC are 0.96, 2.14 and 3.17 times that of NT. Increasing roasting temperature enhances Cu associated with iron enrichment into the MIC, while oxidation of free copper oxide associated with iron forms magnetic copper ferrite. Increased pyrolyzed biomass leads to over-reduction of magnetite associated with Cu to FeO associated with Cu, promoting magnetic copper ferrite decomposition into FeO and free copper oxide. This research holds significant importance in controlling the quality of MIC and the storage risk of IT, and provides theoretical guidance for the regulation and recovery of valuable metals in subsequent processes.

Fabrication of Lead-Zinc Tailings Sintered Brick and Its Effect Factors Based on an Orthogonal Experiment

The existence of lead-zinc tailings threatens the social and ecological environment. The recycling of lead-zinc tailings is important for the all-round green transformation of economic society. In this study, the possibility of fabricating sintered ordinary bricks with lead-zinc tailings was studied based on orthogonal experimentation, and the phase composition and micromorphology of sintered products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). With lead-zinc tailings as the main material, and clay and fly ash as additives, the effect of clay content, forming pressure, sintering temperature, and holding time on physical properties of sintered bricks was analyzed. The results show that clay content and sintering temperature have a major effect on compressive strength, while sintering temperature and holding time play an important role in water absorption. During sintering, mica, chlorite, and other components in lead-zinc tailings are decomposed to form albite, hematite, maghemite, and anhydrite, which play a role in the strength of bricks. The optimal process parameters were found to be a ratio of lead-zinc tailings:clay:fly ash = 6:3:1, forming pressure of 20 MPa, firing temperature of 1080 °C, and holding time of 60 min. The corresponding compressive strength and water absorption were 34.94 MPa and 16.02%, which meets the Chinese sintered ordinary bricks standard (GB/T 5101-2017).

Preparation of high-purity SiO2 by S-HGMS coupled with mixed-acid leaching: A case study on hematite tailings from Ansteel, China

Hematite tailings (HTs) are rich in silica and are used as replacements for fine aggregates in the preparation of construction materials. However, there is scope for a more effective utilization of the valuable elements present in HTs. In this paper, a process for preparing high-purity SiO2 using HTs procured from Ansteel (China) is proposed. HTs were treated using the superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (S-HGMS) technology, where the silica as part of the nonmagnetic fraction was obtained in the form of a high-silica concentrate, which was then subjected to mixed-acid leaching to dissolve impurities to achieve refined purification. The optimum process conditions for S-HGMS were determined, and the response surface methodology was applied to optimize the process parameters of the mixed-acid leaching process. The process indicators of the mixed-acid leaching step included the leaching time, leaching temperature, and molar ratio of the mixed acids. The optimum process conditions for S-HGMS were as follows: the magnetic strength-to-velocity ratio in the weak magnetic separation stage was set to 0.034 T·s/m whereas it was maintained at 0.076 T·s/m in the strong magnetic separation stage; the pulp concentration was 40 g/L, the pulp velocity was 500 mL/min, and the dispersant concentration was 1 mg/g. Under these conditions, the high-silica pulp was processed. The corresponding SiO2 grade increased from 71.788 % to 95.260 %, and its recovery and yield reached 56.330 % and 42.450 %, respectively. The SiO2 content in the sample increased from 95.260 % to 99.961 %. Further, the mechanisms of the S-HGMS and mixed-acid leaching were revealed. The proposed process is environmentally friendly and operationally inexpensive. It can reduce the amount of HTs by 42.450 %, and the obtained high-purity silica product has high economic value and good industrialization prospects.
