Bioconversion of corn fiber to bioethanol: Status and perspectives

Utilizing Undissolved Portion (UNP) of Cement Kiln Dust as a Versatile Multicomponent Catalyst for Bioethylene Production from Bioethanol: An Innovative Approach to Address the Energy Crisis

This study focuses on upcycling cement kiln dust (CKD) as an industrial waste by utilizing the undissolved portion (UNP) as a multicomponent catalyst for bioethylene production from bioethanol, offering an environmentally sustainable solution. To maximize UNP utilization, CKD was dissolved in nitric acid, followed by calcination at 500 °C for 3 h in an oxygen atmosphere. Various characterization techniques confirmed that UNP comprises five different compounds with nanocrystalline particles exhibiting an average crystal size of 47.53 nm. The UNP catalyst exhibited a promising bioethylene yield (77.1%) and selectivity (92%) at 400 °C, showcasing its effectiveness in converting bioethanol to bioethylene with outstanding properties. This exceptional performance can be attributed to its distinctive structural characteristics, including a high surface area and multiple-strength acidic sites that facilitate the reaction mechanism. Moreover, the UNP catalyst displayed remarkable stability and durability, positioning it as a strong candidate for industrial applications in bioethylene production. This research underscores the importance of waste reduction in the cement industry and offers a sustainable path toward a greener future.

Engineering All-Round Cellulase for Bioethanol Production

One strategy to decrease both the consumption of crude oil and environmental damage is through the production of bioethanol from biomass. Cellulolytic enzyme stability and enzymatic hydrolysis play important roles in the bioethanol process. However, the gradually increased ethanol concentration often reduces enzyme activity and leads to inactivation, thereby limiting the final ethanol yield. Herein, we employed an optimized Two-Gene Recombination Process (2GenReP) approach to evolve the exemplary cellulase CBHI for practical bioethanol fermentation. Two all-round CBHI variants (named as R2 and R4) were obtained with simultaneously improved ethanol resistance, organic solvent inhibitor tolerance, and enzymolysis stability in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). Notably, CBHI R4 had a 7.0- to 34.5-fold enhanced catalytic efficiency (kcat/KM) in the presence/absence of ethanol. Employing the evolved CBHI R2 and R4 in the 1G bioethanol process resulted in up to 10.27% (6.7 g/L) improved ethanol yield (ethanol concentration) than non-cellulase, which was far more beyond than other optimization strategies. Besides bioenergy fields, this transferable protein engineering routine holds the potential to generate all-round enzymes that meet the requirement in biotransformation and bioenergy fields.

Isolation and Extraction of Monomers from Insoluble Dietary Fiber

Insoluble dietary fiber is a macromolecular polysaccharide aggregate composed of pectin, glycoproteins, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. All agricultural by-products contain significant levels of insoluble dietary fiber. With the recognition of the increasing scarcity of non-renewable energy sources, the conversion of single components of dietary fiber into renewable energy sources and their use has become an ongoing concern. The isolation and extraction of single fractions from insoluble dietary fiber is one of the most important recent research directions. The continuous development of technologies for the separation and extraction of single components is aimed at expanding the use of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin for food, industrial, cosmetic, biomedical, and other applications. Here, to expand the use of single components to meet the new needs of future development, separation and extraction methods for single components are summarized, in addition to the prospects of new raw materials in the future.
