Abstract
Fruits, vegetables, and dairy products are typically the primary sources of household food waste. Currently, anaerobic digestion is the most used bioprocess for the treatment of food waste with concomitant generation of biogas. However, to achieve a circular carbon economy, the organics in food waste should be converted to new chemicals with higher value than energy. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of medium-chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) production from expired dairy and beverage waste via a chain elongation platform mediated by lactate. In a two-stage fermentation process, the first stage with optimized operational conditions, including varying temperatures and organic loading rates, transformed expired dairy and beverage waste into lactate at a concentration higher than 900 mM C at 43 °C. This lactate was then used to produce >500 mM C caproate and >300 mM C butyrate via microbial chain elongation. Predominantly, lactate-producing microbes such as Lactobacillus and Lacticaseibacillus were regulated by temperature and could be highly enriched under mesophilic conditions in the first-stage reactor. In the second-stage chain elongation reactor, the dominating microbes were primarily from the genera Megasphaera and Caproiciproducens, shaped by varying feed and inoculum sources. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed positive correlations among species from the genera Caproiciproducens, Ruminococcus, and CAG-352, as well as Megasphaera, Bacteroides, and Solobacterium, indicating strong microbial interactions that enhance caproate production. These findings suggest that producing MCCAs from expired dairy and beverage waste via lactate-mediated chain elongation is a viable method for sustainable waste management and could serve as a chemical production platform in the context of building a circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
The generation of food waste (FW) is increasing at an alarming rate, contributing to a total of 32% of all the waste produced globally. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective method for dealing with organic wastes of various compositions, like FW. Waste valorization into value-added products has increased due to the conversion of FW into biogas using AD technology. A variety of pathways are adopted by microbes to avoid unfavorable conditions in AD, including competition between sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane (CH4)-forming bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria decompose organic matter to produce biogas, a digester gas. The composition depends on the type of raw material and the method by which the digestion process is conducted. Studies have shown that the biogas produced by AD contains 65-75% CH4 and 35-45% carbon dioxide (CO2). Methanothrix soehngenii and Methanosaeta concilii are examples of species that convert acetate to CH4 and CO2. Methanobacterium bryantii, Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, and Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus are examples of species that produce CH4 from hydrogen and CO2. Methanobacterium formicicum, Methanobrevibacter smithii, and Methanococcus voltae are examples of species that consume formate, hydrogen, and CO2 and produce CH4. The popularity of AD has increased for the development of biorefinery because it is seen as a more environmentally acceptable alternative in comparison to physico-chemical techniques for resource and energy recovery. The review examines the possibility of using accessible FW to produce important value-added products such as organic acids (acetate/butyrate), biopolymers, and other essential value-added products.

Abstract
Lactate is among the top-ten-biobased products. It occurs naturally as D- or L-isomer and as a racemic mixture (DL-lactate). Generally, lactate with a high optical purity is more valuable. In searching for suitable renewable feedstocks for lactate production, unutilized organic waste streams are increasingly coming into focus. Here, we investigated acid whey, which is a lactose-rich byproduct of yogurt production, that represents a considerable environmental footprint for the dairy industry. We investigated the steering of the lactate-isomer composition in a continuous and open culture system (HRT = 0.6 d) at different pH values (pH 5.0 vs. pH 6.5) and process temperatures (38°C to 50°C). The process startup was achieved by autoinoculation. At a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 47°C-50°C, exclusive D-lactate production occurred because of the dominance of Lactobacillus spp. (> 95% of relative abundance). The highest volumetric D-lactate production rate of 722 ± 94.6 mmol C L-1 d-1 (0.90 ± 0.12 g L-1 h-1), yielding 0.93 ± 0.15 mmol C mmol C-1, was achieved at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 44°C (n = 18). At a pH of 6.5 and a temperature of 44°C, we found a mixture of DL-lactate (average D-to-L-lactate production rate ratio of 1.69 ± 0.90), which correlated with a high abundance of Streptococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp. However, exclusive L-lactate production could not be achieved. Our results show that for the continuous conversion of lactose-rich dairy waste streams, the pH was a critical process parameter to control the yield of lactate isomers by influencing the composition of the microbiota. In contrast, temperature adjustments allowed the improvement of bioprocess kinetics.

Abstract
Regularly adding biogas slurry into fermentation reactors is an effective way to enhance hydrogen or methane production. However, how this method affects the production of valuable organic acids and alcohols is still being determined. This study investigated the effects of different addition ratios on semi-continuous fermentation reactors using food waste as a substrate. The results showed that an addition ratio of 0.2 increased lactic acid production by 30% with a yield of 0.38 ± 0.01 g/g VS, while a ratio of 0.4 resulted in mixed acid fermentation dominated by n-butyric acid (0.07 ± 0.01 g/g VS) and n-caproic acid (0.06 ± 0.00 g/g VS). The introduction of Bifidobacteriaceae by biogas slurry played a crucial role in increasing lactic acid production. In contrast, exclusive medium-chain fatty acid producers enhanced the synthesis of caproic acid and heptanoic acid via the reverse β-oxidation pathway. Mechanism analyses suggested that microbial community structure and activity, substrate hydrolysis, and cell membrane transport system and structure changed to varying degrees after adding biogas slurry.

Abstract
Low lactic acid (LA) yields from direct food waste (FW) fermentation restrict this production pathway. However, nitrogen and other nutrients within FW digestate, in combination with sucrose supplementation, may enhance LA production and improve feasibility of fermentation. Therefore, this work aimed to improve LA fermentation from FWs by supplementing nitrogen (0-400 mgN·L-1) as NH4Cl or digestate and dosing sucrose (0-150 g·L-1) as a low-cost carbohydrate. Overall, NH4Cl and digestate led to similar improvements in the rate of LA formation (0.03 ± 0.02 and 0.04 ± 0.02 h-1 for NH4Cl and digestate, respectively), but NH4Cl also improved the final concentration, though effects varied between treatments (5.2 ± 4.6 g·L-1). While digestate altered the community composition and increased diversity, sucrose minimised community diversion from LA, promoted Lactobacillus growth at all dosages, and enhanced the final LA concentration from 25 to 30 g·L-1 to 59-68 g·L-1, depending on nitrogen dosage and source. Overall, the results highlighted the value of digestate as a nutrient source and sucrose as both community controller and means to enhance the LA concentration in future LA biorefinery concepts.

Abstract
Due to its low carbon footprint and environmental friendliness, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely produced bioplastics in the world. Manufacturing attempts to partially replace petrochemical plastics with PLA are growing year over year. Although this polymer is typically used in high-end applications, its use will increase only if it can be produced at the lowest cost. As a result, food wastes rich in carbohydrates can be used as the primary raw material for the production of PLA. Lactic acid (LA) is typically produced through biological fermentation, but a suitable downstream separation process with low production costs and high product purity is also essential. The global PLA market has been steadily expanding with the increased demand, and PLA has now become the most widely used biopolymer across a range of industries, including packaging, agriculture, and transportation. Therefore, the necessity for an efficient manufacturing method with reduced production costs and a vital separation method is paramount. The primary goal of this study is to examine the various methods of lactic acid synthesis, together with their characteristics and the metabolic processes involved in producing lactic acid from food waste. In addition, the synthesis of PLA, possible difficulties in its biodegradation, and its application in diverse industries have also been discussed.

Succinic Production from Source-Separated Kitchen Biowaste in a Biorefinery Concept: Focusing on Alternative Carbon Dioxide Source for Fermentation Processes. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2023. Abstract
This study presents sustainable succinic acid production from the organic fraction of household kitchen wastes, i.e., the organic fraction of household kitchen waste (OFHKW), pretreated with enzymatic hydrolysis (100% cocktail dosage: 62.5% Cellic® CTec2, 31%% β-Glucanase and 6.5% Cellic ® HTec2, cellulase activity of 12.5 FPU/g-glucan). For fermentation, A. succinogenes was used, which consumes CO2 during the process. OFHKW at biomass loading > 20% (dry matter) resulted in a final concentration of fermentable sugars 81–85 g/L and can be treated as a promising feedstock for succinic production. Obtained results state that simultaneous addition of gaseous CO2 and MgCO3 (>20 g/dm3) resulted in the highest sugar conversion (79–81%) and succinic yields (74–75%). Additionally, CH4 content in biogas, used as a CO2 source, increased by 21–22% and reached 91–92% vol. Liquid fraction of source-separated kitchen biowaste and the residue after succinic fermentation were successfully converted into biogas. Results obtained in this study clearly document the possibility of integrated valuable compounds (succinic acid) and energy (biogas) production from the organic fraction of household kitchen wastes (OFHKW).

Abstract
The valorization of organic solid waste to lactic acid (LA) in open fermentation systems has attracted tremendous interest in recent years. In this study, a highly efficient oriented LA bioconversion system from food waste (FW) in open mode was established. The maximum LA production was 115 g/L, with a high yield of 0.97 g-LA/g-total sugar. FW is a low-cost feedstock for LA production, containing indigenous hydrolysis and LA-producing bacteria (LAB). Saccharification and real-time pH control were found to be essential for maintaining LAB dominantly in open systems. Furthermore, microbial community analysis revealed that Enterococcus mundtii adapted to complex FW substrates and dominated the subsequent bioconversion process. The oriented LA bioconversion exhibited the capacity for biological carbon fixation by reducing CO2 emissions by at least 21 kg per ton of FW under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global market for lactic acid is witnessing growth on the back of increasing applications of lactic acid for manufacturing polylactic acid. Indeed, the lactic acid market is expected to reach 9.8 billion US dollars by 2025. The new concept of meta-fermentation has been proposed in recent years as an alternative to fermentation with pure cultures, due to multiple advantages such as lower susceptibility to contamination, no need for sterilization of culture media or lower raw material costs. However, there are still challenges to overcome to increase the conversion efficiency, decrease formation of by-products and facilitate fermentation control. In this context, the purpose of the study was to develop a robust meta-fermentation process to efficiently produce lactic acid from the OFMSW, stable at pre-industrial scale (1500 L). To maximize lactic acid production, operating conditions (pH, HRT) were modified, and a novel bioaugmentation strategy was tested. RESULTS A LAB-rich inoculum was generated with LAB isolated from the digestate and grown in the laboratory with MRS medium. After feeding this inoculum to the digester (bioaugmentation), lactic acid accumulation up to 41.5 gO2/L was achieved under optimal operating conditions. This corresponds to more than 70% of the filtered COD measured in the digestate. The amount of lactic acid produced was higher than the volatile fatty acids under all feeding strategies applied. CONCLUSIONS The operating conditions that enhanced the production of lactic acid from mixed cultures were 55ºC, 2 days HRT and pH 4.8-5.7, with pH-control once a day. The bioaugmentation strategy improved the results obtained in the prototype without applying reinoculation. Lactic acid was the main product along with other carboxylic acids. Further improvements are needed to increase purity as well as lactic acid concentration to reach economic feasibility of the whole process (digestion of OFMSW and downstream).

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are high-value chemicals that are increasingly demanded worldwide. Biological production via food waste (FW) dark fermentation (DF) is a promising option to achieve the sustainability and environmental benefits typical of biobased chemicals and concurrently manage large amounts of residues. DF has a great potential to play a central role in waste biorefineries due to its ability to hydrolyze and convert complex organic substrates into VFAs that can be used as building blocks for bioproducts, chemicals and fuels. Several challenges must be faced for full-scale implementation, including process optimization to achieve high and stable yields, the development of efficient techniques for selective recovery and the cost-effectiveness of the whole process. This review aims to critically discuss and statistically analyze the existing relationships between process performance and the main variables of concern. Moreover, opportunities, current challenges and perspectives of a FW-based and fermentation-centred biorefinery layout are discussed.

Abstract
The resource utilization of food waste is crucial, and single-cell protein (SCP) is attracting much attention due to its high value. This study aimed to convert food waste to SCP by Yarrowia lipolytica. It was found the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate 77 ± 1.70% was achieved at 30 g COD/L with the protein content of biomass only 24.1 ± 0.4% w/w biomass dry weight (BDW) in one-stage fermentation system. However, the protein content was significantly increased to 38.8 ± 0.2% w/w BDW with the COD removal rate 85.5 ± 0.7% by a two-stage fermentation process, where the food waste was firstly anaerobically fermented to volatile fatty acids and then converted to SCP with Yarrowia lipolytica. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the expression of SCP-producing genes including ATP citrate (pro-S)-lyase and fumarate hydratase class II were up-regulated in the two-stage transformation, resulting in more organic degradation for SCP synthesis.

Abstract
Anaerobic co-fermentation (AcoF) of dairy cattle manure (DCM) and corn straw silage (CSS) for producing lactic acid (LA) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was investigated. Batch experiments were conducted at seven different DCM/CSS ratios and at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Results indicated that the highest concentration of LA was 17.50 ± 0.70 g/L at DCM:CSS ratio of 1:3 and thermophilic temperature, while VFAs was 18.23 ± 2.45 g/L at mono-CSS fermentation and mesophilic temperature. High solubilization of thermophilic conditions contributed to LA accumulation in AcoF process. Presence of the CSS increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus for LA production at thermophilic. Meanwhile, the abundance of Bifidobacterium was increased when CSS was added at mesophilic, which could conduce to VFAs production. This study provides a new route for enhancing the biotransformation of DCM and CSS into short-chain fatty acids, potentially bringing economic benefits to agricultural waste treatment.

Abstract
As an alternative for commercial enzyme, crude enzyme of fungal mash could promote food waste (FW) hydrolysis, but its specific effects coupled pH adjusting on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) remains unknown. The crude enzyme produced from an Aspergillus awamori, named complex-amylase (CA), was added to short-term anaerobic system of FW fermentation. Results showed that adding CA significantly improved the solubility and degradability of biodegradable and non-biodegradable organics in FW, where the SCOD concentration with adding CA increased by 116.9% relative to the control but a marginal enhancement on VFAs yield. In contrast, adding CA combined with adjusting pH 8 markedly increased the VFAs production to 32.0 g COD/L, almost 10 times as much as the control. Besides, pH adjusting altered the metabolic pathway from lactate-type to butyrate-type. Adding CA coupled pH adjusting significant increase the component of butyrate compared with pH adjusting alone. Moreover, microbial community analysis indicated that adding CA reinforced proportion of the butyrate-producing bacteria (e.g., Dialister) under basic conditions, thus enhancing the butyrate metabolic pathways. This study demonstrated that fungal mash pretreatment coupled pH conditioning could be an economical way to enhance VFAs yield for FW valorization during anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract
In this study, the production of lactic acid from food waste in industrially relevant conditions was investigated. Laboratory assays were first performed in batch conditions to determine the suitable operational parameters for an efficient lactic acid production. The use of compost as inoculum, the regulation of temperature at 35 °C and pH at 5 enhanced the development of Lactobacillus sp. resulting in the production of 70 g/L of lactic acid with a selectivity of 89% over the other carboxylic acids. Those parameters were then applied at pilot scale in successive fed-batch fermentations. The subsequent high concentration (68 g/L), yield (0.38 g/gTS) and selectivity (77%) in lactic acid demonstrated the applicability of the process. To integrate the process into a complete value chain, fermentation residues were then converted into biogas through anaerobic digestion. Lastly, the experiment was successfully replicated using commercial and municipal waste collected in France.

Abstract
It is promising to recover lactic acid (LA) from fermentation of food waste (FW). In this study, pH and temperatures were investigated comprehensively to find their effects on LA fermentation, and microbial analyses were used to take insight to the variation of LA production. The results showed that mesophilic fermentation benefited hydrolysis and acidification, leading to a high yield of LA, while thermophilic conditions restricted other producers at low pH, leading to a high purity of LA. Lactobacillus amylolyticus was the main LA producer under thermophilic conditions, but Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum boomed at pH 5.0-6.0 and it converted LA partly to butyric acid. Simultaneously, Bacillus coagulans also increased and improved the optical purity (OP) of L-LA. From a series of this study, an operational condition of pH 5.5 and temperature of 52 °C would be potentially suitable for lactate fermentation of FW with high purity of 89%, while a stable LA production with an OP of 68% was achieved at 55 °C and pH 6.0.

Abstract
Due to the recent boom in urbanisation, economy, and global population, the amount of waste generated worldwide has increased tremendously. The World Bank estimates that global waste generation is expected to increase 70% by 2050. Disposal of waste is already a major concern as it poses risks to the environment, human health, and economy. To tackle this issue and maximise potential environmental, economic, and social benefits, waste valorisation - a value-adding process for waste materials - has emerged as a sustainable and efficient strategy. The major objective of waste valorisation is to transit to a circular economy and maximally alleviate hazardous impacts of waste. This review conducts bibliometric analysis to construct a co-occurrence network of research themes related to management of five major waste streams (i.e., food, agricultural, textile, plastics, and electronics). Modern valorisation technologies and their efficiencies are highlighted. Moreover, insights into improvement of waste valorisation technologies are presented in terms of sustainable environmental, social, and economic performances. This review summarises highlighting factors that impede widespread adoption of waste valorisation, such as technology lock-in, optimisation for local conditions, unfavourable regulations, and low investments, with the aim of devising solutions that explore practical, feasible, and sustainable means of waste valorisation.

Abstract
A significant amount of food waste (FW) is produced every year. If it is not disposed of timeously, human health and the ecological environment can be negatively affected. Lactic acid (LA), a high value-added product, can be produced by fermentation from FW as a substrate, realizing the concurrent treatment and recycling of FW, which has attracted increasing research interest. In this paper, the latest advances and deficiencies were presented from the following aspects: microorganisms involved in LA fermentation and the metabolic pathways of Lactobacillus, fermentation conditions, and methods of enhanced biotransformation and LA separation. The limitations of the LA fermentation of FW are mainly associated with low LA concentration and yield, the low purity of L(+)-LA, and the high separation costs. The establishment of biorefineries of FW with lactic acid as the target product is the future development direction, but there are still many research studies to be done.

Abstract
Medium-chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) production from organic wastes has attracted much attention because of their higher energy contents and diverse applications. Anaerobic reactor microbiomes are stable and resilient and have resulted in efficient performance during many years of operation for thousands of full-scale anaerobic digesters worldwide. The method underlying how the relevant microbial pathways contribute to elongate carbon chains in reactor microbiomes is important. In particular, the reverse β-oxidation pathway genes are critical to upgrading short-chain fermentation products to MCCAs via a chain elongation (CE) process. Diverse genomics and metagenomics studies have been conducted in various fields, ranging from intracellular metabolic pathways to metabolic cascades between different strains. This review covers taxonomic approach to culture processes depending on types of organic wastes and the deeper understanding of genome and metagenome-scale CE pathway construction, and the co-culture and multi-omics technology that should be addressed in future research.

Abstract
Nitritation facilitates the application of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox)-based processes for cost-efficient nitrogen removal from wastewater. This study proposed light irradiation as a novel strategy to rapidly start up nitritation by stimulating both the activities and growth of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) while suppressing that of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Batch assays and kinetic model jointly suggested that AOB activity presented an initial increase followed by a decline while NOB decreased continuously throughout the light energy densities applied. Under optimal light energy densities (0.03-0.08 kJ/mg VSS), the highest nitrite accumulation ratio of 70.0% was achieved in sequencing batch reactors with both mainstream online and sidestream offline light treatments when treating real or synthetic municipal wastewater. Light irradiation induced different responses of AOB and NOB, leading to microbial structure optimization. Specifically, the expression of nxrB was downregulated, while the expression of amoA was upregulated under appropriate light irradiation. Moreover, although Nitrosomonas as typical AOB disappeared, the family Nitrosomonadaceae was doubled with enrichment of Ellin6067 and another four Nitrosomonadaceae genera that were only identified in light-treated reactors, thus ensuring AOB predominance and stable nitritation. These findings offer a new approach to rapidly establishing nitritation using light irradiation in municipal wastewater, especially for nitritation/microalgae system.

Abstract
A novel biorefinery platform integrating thermal pretreatment and solid-liquid separation unit is here proposed to fully exploit food waste (FW) potential for production of valuable chemicals and energy through semi-continuous anaerobic bioconversion. The liquid fraction deriving from raw or pretreated FW, was fermented into volatile fatty acids (VFAs, from acetic to caproic acid) while the residual fraction was converted into biomethane. Thermal pretreatment effectively extracted a portion of the macromolecular organics, especially starch, to the liquid phase, promoting acidogenic fermentation and chain elongation pathways (0.43 gVFA g-1VSfed and 0.58 gVFA g-1VSfed with raw and pretreated extract, respectively). In parallel, anaerobic digestion of solid residue in 10 L reactors showed process stability and higher conversion rate for the pretreated residue (0.31 against 0.26 Nm3CH4 kg-1VSfed). The mass-transfer balance coupled with the economic assessment, calculated in terms of direct gross added value, indicated promising revenues by integrating the thermal upstream treatment.

Abstract
The feasibility of co-fermentation of food waste and spent mushroom substance for lactic acid with Aspergillus niger cellulase replacing commercial cellulase was explored. In this study, Enterococcus mundtii was used in this study because it could utilize hexose and pentose. When the ratio of food waste and spent mushroom substance was 1:2, lactic acid concentration was 39.22 g/L, 39.28% higher than the weighted average of experimental lactic acid concentrations, indicating that the co-fermentation had positive synergistic effects. Results showed 92.62% of sugars of pretreated spent mushroom substance was released by Aspergillus niger cellulase. Moreover, when Aspergillus niger cellulase was added into the lactic acid fermentation system at 24 h, lactic acid concentration reached 48.72 g/L, which was 22.97% higher than that of the control group with commercial cellulase, because of the disappearance of Veillonella and Saccharomycetales with the Aspergillus niger cellulase addition, thus making more substrates converted into lactic acid.

Abstract
Meta-l-lactic acid fermentation from non-treated kitchen refuse was reconstructed using a combination of isolated bacterial strains under several pH control strategies. The meta-fermentation system was successfully reconstructed using a combination of Weizmannia coagulans MN-07, Caldibacillus thermoamylovorans OM55-6, and Caldibacillus hisashii N-11 strains. Additionally, a simplified constant pH control strategy was employed, which decreased fermentation time and increased production. The optimum pH (6.5) for the reconstructed meta-fermentation was favorable for the respective pure cultures of the three selected strains. The l-lactic acid production performance of the reconstructed meta-fermentation system was as follows: concentration, 24.5 g L-1 ; optical purity, 100%; productivity, 0.341 g L-1 h-1 ; yield, 1.06 g g-1 . These results indicated that constant pH control was effective in the reconstructed meta-fermentation with the best performance of l-lactic acid production at pH optimal for the selected bacterial growth, while the switching from swing pH control would suppress the activities of unfavorable bacterial species in un-isolated meta-fermentation.

Abstract
Co-anaerobic fermentation (co-AF) of swine manure (SM) and apple waste (AW) has been proved to be beneficial for lactic acid (LA) production. In order to further improve the LA production, three important parameters, namely AW in feedstock, temperature, volatile solids (VS) of feedstock, were evaluated using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. The quadratic regression model was developed and interactive effects was found between the three parameters. Results showed that the maximum concentration, 31.18 g LA/L (with LA yield of 0.62 g/g VS), was obtained under optimum conditions of 60.4% AW in feedstock, 34.7 ℃, and 5.0% VS. At the optimum conditions, the solubilization of organic matter was enhanced compared with mono-fermentation of SM. Microbial community structure of the reactor diverged greatly with fermentation time. Clostridium and Lactobacillus were dominant bacteria in the fermentation process, resulting in a remarkably LA accumulation.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion, as an eco-friendly waste treatment technology, is facing the problem of low stability and low product value. Harvesting value-added products beyond methane and removing the inhibitory compounds will unleash new vitality of anaerobic digestion, which need to be achieved by selective separation of certain compounds. Various methods are reviewed in this study for separating valuable products (volatile fatty acids, medium-chain carboxylic acids, lactic acid) and inhibitory substance (ammonia) from the liquid fraction of digestate, including their performance, applicability, corresponding limitations and roadmaps for improvement. In-situ extraction that allows simultaneous production and extraction is seen as promising approach which carries good potential to overcome the barriers for continuous production. The prospects and challenges of the future development are further analyzed based on in-situ extraction and economics.

Abstract
Auto-generative high pressure digestion (AHPD) and hydrogen-injecting digestion (HID) have been introduced to directly produce high CH4-content biogas from anaerobic digester. However, each approach has its own technical difficulties (pH changes), and practical issues (high cost of H2) to obtain > 90% CH4 containing biogas, particularly, from the high-strength waste like food waste (FW). To overcome this problem, in this study, AHPD and HID were integrated, which can offset each drawback but maximize its benefit. Substrate concentration of FW tested here was 200 g COD/L, the highest ever applied in AHPD and HID studies. At first, the reactor was operated by elevating the autogenerative pressure from 1 to 3, 5, and 7 bar without H2 injection. With the pressure increase, the CH4 content in the biogas gradually increased from 52.4% at 1 bar to 77.4% at 7 bar. However, a drop of CH4 production yield (MPY) was observed at 7 bar, due to the pH drop down to 6.7 by excess CO2 dissolution. At further operation, H2 injection began at 5 bar, with increasing its amount. The injection was effective to increase the CH4 content to 82.8%, 87.2%, and 90.6% at 0.09, 0.13, and 0.18 L H2/g CODFW.fed of H2 injection amount, respectively. At 0.25 L H2/g CODFW.fed, there was a further increase of CH4 content to 92.1%, but the MPY was dropped with pH increase to 8.7 with residual H2 being detected (4% in the biogas). Microbial community analysis showed the increased abundance of piezo-tolerant microbe with pressure increase, and direct interspecies electron transfer contributors after H2 injection. In conclusion, the integration of two approaches enabled to directly produce high calorific biogas (90% > CH4, 180 MJ/m3 biogas) from high-strength FW at the lowest requirement of H2 (0.18 L H2/g CODFW.fed) ever reported.

Lactate Metabolism and Microbiome Composition Are Affected by Nitrogen Gas Supply in Continuous Lactate-Based Chain Elongation. FERMENTATION 2021. Abstract
Chain elongation reactor microbiomes produce valuable medium-chain carboxylates (MCC) from non-sterile residual substrates where lactate is a relevant intermediate. Gas supply has been shown to impact chain elongation performance. In the present study, the effect of nitrogen gas (N2) supply on lactate metabolism, conversion rates, biomass growth, and microbiome composition was evaluated in a lactate-fed upflow anaerobic reactor with continuous or intermittent N2 gas supply. Successful MCC production was achieved with continuous N2 gas supply at low superficial gas velocities (SGV) of 0.22 m∙h−1. Supplying N2 at high SGV (>2 m∙h−1) either continuously (2.2 m∙h−1) or intermittently (3.6 m∙h−1) disrupted chain elongation, resulting in production of short-chain carboxylates (SCC), i.e., acetate, propionate, and n-butyrate. Caproiciproducens-dominated chain-elongating microbiomes enriched at low SGV were washed out at high SGV where Clostridium tyrobutyricum-dominated microbiomes thrived, by displaying higher lactate consumption rates. Suspended growth seemed to be dominant regardless of SGV and gas supply regime applied with no measurable sludge bed formed. The highest MCC production from lactate of 10 g COD∙L−1∙d−1 with electron selectivities of 72 ± 5%was obtained without N2 gas supply at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 day. The addition of 5 g∙L−1 of propionate did not inhibit chain elongation, but rather boosted lactate conversion rates towards MCC with n-heptylate reaching 1.8 g COD∙L−1∙d−1. N2 gas supply can be used for mixing purposes and to steer lactate metabolism to MCC or SCC production.

Abstract
Converting biowaste into value-added products has raised the researchers' interests. In this study, bioconversion was applied to produce chain acids from food waste by anaerobic fermentation. To improve the caproic acid production, different pretreatments (i.e., ultrasonic, hydrothermal, and alkaline-thermal) were used for investigating their effects on the acidogenic production and microbial communities. The results showed that ultrasonic and hydrothermal pretreatments (207.8 and 210.1 mg COD/g VS, respectively) were very efficient for enhancing the caproic acid production, compared to the alkaline-thermal pretreated samples and control samples (72.6 and 97.5 mg COD/g VS, respectively). The ultrasonic pretreatment was beneficial for reducing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during the caproic acid production, resulting in converting more lactic acid to caproic acid by adding the hydrothermal pretreatment. The microbial community analysis showed that the acidogenic bacteria Caproiciproducens dominated the fermentation in this bioconversion process of food waste into chain acids. The Caproiciproducens mainly degraded the proteins and carbohydrates from the saccharified residues of food waste to produce caproic acids through chain elongation procedure. The investigation and optimized method may help develop the bioconversion technology for producing VFAs products from food wastes.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) obtained by fermentation of carbohydrates is well-known and widely used in the food sector. This process is as an alternative to the chemical synthesis and ensures several advantages especially in terms of environmental sustainability. In particularly, the opportunity to use agro-food residues as fermentable raw materials could improve the overall process sustainability, without considering the indisputable advantages in terms of waste reduction and residual biomass valorization, in a bio- and circular economy perspective. This research deals with the study and development of the fermentation processes of various waste biomasses from the agro-food industries, including milk whey (MW), ricotta cheese whey (RCW), pear processing residues (PPR), potato pomace (PP), tomato pomace (PT), in order to obtain an experimental protocol applicable to the production of LA. Lactobacillus casei DSM 20011 (ATCC 393), a homofermentative L(+)-LA producing bacterium has been used, starting from small-scale tests to verify of the microorganism to grow in complex medium with different carbon sources and the possible presence of potentially toxic substances for microbial growth. Yields from 27.0 ± 0.3% to 46.0 ± 0.7% have been obtained. Then, a scaling-up was performed in a 1 L batch fermenter, using a mixed medium of RCW and PPR in different ratio. The best LA yield was 78.3% with a volumetric productivity of 1.12 g/L·h in less than 60 h.

Abstract
Production of medium chain carboxylic acids (MCCA) as renewable feedstock bio-chemicals, from food waste (FW), requires complicated reactor configurations and supplementation of chemicals to achieve product selectivity. This study evaluated the manipulation of organic loading rate in an un-supplemented, single stage stirred tank reactor to steer an anaerobic digestion (AD) microbiome towards acidogenic fermentation (AF), and thence to chain elongation. Increasing substrate availability by switching to a FW feedstock with a higher COD stimulated chain elongation. The MCCA species n-caproic (10.1 ± 1.7 g L−1) and n-caprylic (2.9 ± 0.8 g L−1) acid were produced at concentrations comparable to more complex reactor set-ups. As a result, of the adjusted operating strategy, a more specialised microbiome developed containing several MCCA-producing bacteria, lactic acid-producing Olsenella spp. and hydrogenotrophic methanogens. By contrast, in an AD reactor that was operated in parallel to produce biogas, the retention times had to be doubled when fed with the high-COD FW to maintain biogas production. The AD microbiome comprised a diverse mixture of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria, and acetoclastic methanogens. The results suggest that manipulation of organic loading rate and food-to-microorganism ratio may be used as an operating strategy to direct an AD microbiome towards AF, and to stimulate chain elongation in FW fermentation, using a simple, un-supplemented stirred tank set-up. This outcome provides the opportunity to repurpose existing AD assets operating on food waste for biogas production, to produce potentially higher value MCCA products, via simple manipulation of the feeding strategy.

Abstract
Food waste has a great potential for resource recovery due to its huge yield and high organic content. Oriented fermentation is a promising method with strong application prospects due to high efficiency, strong robustness, and high-value products. Different fermentation types lead to different products, which can be shifted by adjusting fermentation conditions such as inoculum, pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), organic loading rate (OLR), and nutrients. Compared with other types, lactic acid fermentation has the lowest reliance on artificial intervention. Lactic acid and volatile fatty acids are the common products, and high yield and high purity are the main targets of food waste fermentation. In addition to operational parameters, reactors and processes should be paid more attention to for industrial application. Currently, continuously stirred tank reactors and one-stage processes are used principally for scale-up continuous fermentation of food waste. Electro-fermentation and iron-based or carbon-based additives can improve food waste fermentation, but their mechanisms and application need further investigation. After fermentation, the recovery of target products is a key problem due to the lack of green and economic methods. Precipitation, distillation, extraction, adsorption, and membrane separation can be considered, but the recovery step is still the most expensive in the entire treatment chain. It is expected to develop more efficient fermentation processes and recovery strategies based on food waste composition and market demand.

Co-Fermentation of Food Waste and Municipal Sludge from the Saudi Arabian Environment to Improve Lactic Acid Production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus AW3 Isolated from Date Processing Waste. Abstract
Food waste and municipal sludge were used as the substrates for the biosynthesis of lactic acid in a batch fermentor. The probiotic bacterial strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus AW3 isolated from date processing waste was used to produce lactic acid in a batch fermentor. Co-fermentation enhanced the biosynthesis of lactic acid and decreased substrate inhibition more than mono-substrate fermentation. A maximum yield of 28.4 ± 0.87 g/L of lactic acid was obtained through co-fermentation of food waste and municipal sludge at an optimized ratio of 2:0.5. Lactic acid production was improved by the supplementation of fructose, peptone, and sodium dihydrogen phosphate at pH 5.5 after 48 h fermentation. This production was approximately three-fold higher than that during mono-fermentation of food waste. The tested bacterial strains were obtained from the Microbial Type Culture Collection (MTCC). Lactic acid showed potent antimicrobial activity against pathogenic organisms, such as Bacillus subtilis MTCC 5981 (14 mm), Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 737 (20 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 424 (24 mm), Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC111 (19 mm), Escherichia coli MTCC 443 (18 mm), Penicillium chrysogenum MTCC 5108 (19 mm), and Aspergillus niger MTCC 282 (19 mm). The antimicrobial properties of lactic acid have significant potential to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi and improve probiotic properties. The lactic acid extracted from L. rhamnosus AW3 decreased the pH value of soil (p < 0.01) and increased the availability of soil phosphorus (p < 0.01). These findings demonstrate the bioconversion of food waste and municipal sludge into lactic acid, and the recycling of food wastes in urban areas to enhance soil nutrients.

Abstract
Food waste contains numerous easily degradable components, and anaerobic digestion is prone to acidification and instability. This work aimed to investigate the effect of adding yeast on biogas production performance, when substrate is added after biogas production is reduced. The results showed that the daily biogas production increased 520 and 550 ml by adding 2.0% (volatile solids; VS) of activated yeast on the 12th and 37th day of anaerobic digestion, respectively, and the gas production was relatively stable. In the control group without yeast, the increase of gas production was significantly reduced. After the second addition of substrate and yeast, biogas production only increased 60 ml compared with that before the addition. After fermentation, the biogas production of yeast group also increased by 33.2% compared with the control group. Results of the analysis of indicators, such as volatile organic acids, alkalinity and propionic acid, showed that the stability of the anaerobic digestion system of the yeast group was higher. Thus, the yeast group is highly likely to recover normal gas production when the biogas production is reduced, and substrate is added. The results provide a reference for experiments on the industrialization of continuous anaerobic digestion to take tolerable measures when the organic load of the feed fluctuates dramatically.

Abstract
Recently developed and produced by Hefei Chemjoy Polymer Material Co. Ltd., homogeneous CJMC-3 and CJMC-5 cation-exchange membranes (CJMCED) are characterized. The membrane conductivity in NaCl, Na2SO4, and CaCl2 solutions, permeability in respect to the NaCl and CaCl2 diffusion, transport numbers, current-voltage curves (CVC), and the difference in the pH (DpH) of the NaCl solution at the desalination compartment output and input are examined for these membranes in comparison with a well-studied commercial Neosepta CMX cation-exchange membrane produced by Astom Corporation, Japan. It is found that the conductivity, CVC (at relatively low voltages), and water splitting rate (characterized by DpH) for both CJMCED membranes are rather close to these characteristics for the CMX membrane. However, the diffusion permeability of the CJMCED membranes is significantly higher than that of the CMX membrane. This is due to the essentially more porous structure of the CJMCED membranes; the latter reduces the counterion permselectivity of these membranes, while allowing much easier transport of large ions, such as anthocyanins present in natural dyes of fruit and berry juices. The new membranes are promising for use in electrodialysis demineralization of brackish water and natural food solutions.

A biochemical system was used for electricity generation from food waste (FW) and spent animal beddings (SAB). The wastes were blended and fermented anaerobically to produce fermentation liquids used as fuels for running a catalytic fuel cell. The fermentation liquids were analyzed for their components. The results show the organic contents i.e. volatile solids of both FW and SAB to be 23.4 and 20.9 g/L while the carbon contents were 6.5 and 6.1 g/L respectively. The media were however very rich in volatile fatty acids (VFAs). When used, the fermentation liquids from FW and SAB generated mean open-circuit voltages of 0.64 and 0.53 V and mean maximum power densities (Pmean) of 1.6 and 1.3 mW/cm2 respectively. The fuel cell showed very high efficiency in the conversion of all VFAs especially butyric acid with the highest been 97% for FW and 96% for SAB.

Abstract
In this study, a reliable approach using ammonia nitrogen was proposed to increase lactate production during semi-continuous food waste (FW) fermentation under mesophilic conditions. Both free ammonia nitrogen (FAN) and ammonium ion (NH4+-N) were present in mesophilic reactors, with a wide FAN/NH4+-N ratio variation due to the intermittent pH control. The investigation of responsible mechanisms revealed that the increased production yield of LA was associated with the acceleration of solubilization, hydrolysis, glycolysis and acidification. The presence of FAN and NH4+-N in proper concentrations increased lactate production by 2.4 folds and recovered lactate production to 24.5 g COD/L from low rate control reactor (9.6 g COD/L) under mesophilic conditions. Furthermore, the microorganisms responsible for LA accumulation (Bavariicoccus, Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium and Corynebacterium) were selectively enriched, and KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathways associated with carbohydrate transport and LA production were enhanced in nitrogen fed reactors.

Abstract
Environmental biorefineries aim to produce biofuels and platform biomolecules from organic waste. To this end, microbial electrochemical technologies theoretically allow controlled microbial electrosynthesis (MES) of organic molecules to be coupled to oxidation of waste. Here, we provide a first proof of concept and a robust operation strategy for MES in a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) fed with biowaste hydrolysates. This strategy allowed stable operation at 5 A/m2 for more than three months in a labscale reactor. We report a two to four-fold reduction in power consumption compared to microbial electrosynthesis with water oxidation at the anode. The bioelectrochemical characterizations of the cells were used to compute energy and matter balances for biorefinery scenarios in which anaerobic digestion (AD) provides the electricity and CO2 required for the MEC. Calculations shows that up to 22% of electrons (or COD) from waste may be converted to organic products in the AD-MEC process.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the composition changes of food waste after being placed for few days and propose a two-stage fermentation method to effectively convert food waste saccharified liquid (FWSL) into lipids by Rhodosporidium toruloides. Food waste generally needs 3-5 days to be transported and stored before treatment. The lactic acid concentration of FWSL produced from 5-days-placed-at-room-temperature food waste reached to 15 g/L. Lactic acid promoted yeast proliferation, and its main mechanism was the conversion of lactic acid into pyruvic acid, which could provide energy for yeast growth through TCA cycle. The optimal lipid concentration in the two-stage fermentation reached to 9.19 g/L, and lipid yield amounted to 0.204 g lipid/g total sugar; the values increased by 44.27% and 60.63%, respectively, when compared with those in traditional fermentation. This study could provide a strategy for food waste treatment closer to industrial production.

Abstract
Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) find more and more applications; the success of an application depends on the properties of the membranes selected for its realization. For the first time, the results of a comprehensive characterization of the transport properties of IEMs from three manufactures (Astom, Japan; Shchekinoazot, Russia; and Fujifilm, The Netherlands) are reported. Our own and literature data are presented and analyzed using the microheterogeneous model. Homogeneous Neosepta AMX and CMX (Astom), heterogeneous MA-41 and MK-40 (Shchekinoazot), and AEM Type-I, AEM Type-II, AEM Type-X, as well as CEM Type-I, CEM Type-II, and CEM Type-X produced by the electrospinning method (Fujifim) were studied. The concentration dependencies of the conductivity, diffusion permeability, as well as the real and apparent ion transport numbers in these membranes were measured. The counterion transport number characterizing the membrane permselectivity increases in the following order: CEM Type-I ≅ MA-41 < AEM Type-I < MK-40 < CMX ≅ CEM Type-II ≅ CEM Type-X ≅ AEM Type-II < AMX < AEM Type-X. It is shown that the properties of the AEM Type-I and CEM Type-I membranes are close to those of the heterogeneous MA-41 and MK-40 membranes, while the properties of Fujifilm Type-II and Type-X membranes are close to those of the homogeneous AMX and CMX membranes. This difference is related to the fact that the Type-I membranes have a relatively high parameter f2, the volume fraction of the electroneutral solution filling the intergel spaces. This high value is apparently due to the open-ended pores, formed by the reinforcing fabric filaments of the Type-I membranes, which protrude above the surface of these membranes.

Abstract
A critical and up-to-date review has been conducted on the latest individual valorization technologies aimed at the generation of value-added by-products from food wastes in the form of bio-fuels, bio-materials, value added components and bio-based adsorbents. The aim is to examine the associated advantages and drawbacks of each technique separately along with the assessment of process parameters affecting the efficiency of the generation of the bio-based products. Challenges faced during the processing of the wastes to each of the bio-products have been explained and future scopes stated. Among the many hurdles encountered in the successful and high yield generation of the bio-products is the complexity and variability in the composition of the food wastes along with the high inherent moisture content. Also, individual technologies have their own process configurations and operating parameters which may affect the yield and composition of the desired end product. All these require extensive study of the composition of the food wastes followed by their effective pre-treatments, judicial selection of the technological parameters and finally optimization of not only the process configurations but also in relation to the input food waste material. Attempt has also been made to address the hurdles faced during the implementation of such technologies on an industrial scale.

Abstract
With an increase in the organic acid requirement, the production of organic acids has been increased over the years. To achieve cost-effective production of organic acids, efficient recovery processes are needed. Electro-membrane processes, including electrodialysis (ED), electrometathesis (EMT), electro-ion substitution (EIS), electro-electrodialysis (EED), electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM), and electrodeionization (EDI), are promising technologies for the recovery of organic acids. In the electro-membrane processes, organic acids are separated from water and other impurities based on the electro-migration of ions through ion-exchange membranes. These processes can recover various types of organic acids from the fermentation broth with high recovery yield and low energy consumption. In addition, the integration of fermentation and the electro-membrane process can improve the acid recovery with lower byproduct concentration and energy consumption. With an increase in the organic acid requirement, the publication of organic acids recovery has been increased over the years.![]()
