Radiolytic degradation of formic acid and formate in aqueous solution: modeling the final stages of organic mineralization under advanced oxidation process conditions

Multiscale Modeling of Plutonium Radiation Chemistry in Nitric Acid Solutions. 1. Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation of Pu(IV)

Careful manipulation of the plutonium oxidation states is essential in the study and utilization of its rich redox chemistry. To achieve this level of control, a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of radiation-induced plutonium redox chemistry is critical due to the unavoidable exposure of plutonium to ionizing radiation fields, both inherent and from in-process applications. To this end, we have developed an experimentally evaluated multiscale computer model for the prediction of gamma radiation-induced Pu(IV) redox chemistry in concentrated nitric acid solutions (1.0, 3.0, and 6.0 M). Under these acidic, aqueous solution conditions, cobalt-60 gamma irradiation afforded marginal net conversion of Pu(IV) to Pu(VI), the extent of which was dependent on the concentration of HNO3 and absorbed gamma dose. Multiscale calculations, which are in excellent agreement with experimental data, indicate that this observation is due to a combination of inherent plutonium disproportionation reactions and several radiation-induced processes, including redox cycling between Pu(IV) and Pu(III), as achieved by the reduction of Pu(IV) by nitrous acid and hydrogen peroxide, the oxidation of Pu(III) by nitrate and hydroxyl radicals, and the sequential oxidation of Pu(IV) to Pu(V) and Pu(VI) by the remaining available yield of nitrate radicals.

Mechanistic and quantitative profiling of electro-Fenton process for wastewater treatment

Electro-Fenton (EF) process represents an energy-efficient and scalable advanced oxidation technology (AOT) for micropollutants removal in wastewaters. However, mechanistic profiling and quantitation of contribution of each subprocess (i.e., adsorption at electrode, coagulation, radical oxidation, electrode oxidation/reduction, and H₂O₂ oxidation) to the overall degradation are substantially unclear, resulting in difficulty in tunability and optimization for different treatment scenarios. In this study, we investigated degradation kinetics of a target micropollutant in an EF system. The contribution of all possible subprocesses was elucidated by comparing the observed degradation rate in the EF system with the sum of the kinetics in each subprocess. The results indicated that the overall degradation can be attributed to the synergistic action of the above-mentioned subprocesses. The radical oxidation accounts for 87% elimination, followed by electrode reoxidation/reduction of 7.7%. These results not only advance the fundamental understanding of synergistic effect in EF system, but also open new possibilities to optimize these techniques for better scalability. In addition, the methodology in this study could potentially boost the in-depth exploration of subprocess contribution in other Fenton-like systems.

UV-Vis Activated Cu2O/SnO2/WO3 Heterostructure for Photocatalytic Removal of Pesticides

A three-steps sol–gel method was used to obtain a Cu₂O/SnO₂/WO₃ heterostructure powder, deposited as film by spray pyrolysis. The porous morphology of the final heterostructure was constructed starting with fiber-like WO₃ acting as substrate for SnO₂ development. The SnO₂/WO₃ sample provide nucleation and grew sites for Cu₂O formation. Diffraction evaluation indicated that all samples contained crystalline structures with crystallite size varying from 42.4 Å (Cu₂O) to 81.8 Å (WO₃). Elemental analysis confirmed that the samples were homogeneous in composition and had an oxygen excess due to the annealing treatments. Photocatalytic properties were tested in the presence of three pesticides—pirimicarb, S-metolachlor (S-MCh), and metalaxyl (MET)—chosen based on their resilience and toxicity. The photocatalytic activity of the Cu₂O/SnO₂/WO₃ heterostructure was compared with WO₃, SnO₂, Cu₂O, Cu₂O/SnO₂, Cu₂O/WO₃, and SnO₂/WO₃ samples. The results indicated that the three-component heterostructure had the highest photocatalytic efficiency toward all pesticides. The highest photocatalytic efficiency was obtained toward S-MCh (86%) using a Cu₂O/SnO₂/WO₃ sample and the lowest correspond to MET (8.2%) removal using a Cu₂O monocomponent sample. TOC analysis indicated that not all the removal efficiency could be attributed to mineralization, and by-product formation is possible. Cu₂O/SnO₂/WO₃ is able to induce 81.3% mineralization of S-MCh, while Cu₂O exhibited 5.7% mineralization of S-MCh. The three-run cyclic tests showed that Cu₂O/SnO₂/WO₃, WO₃, and SnO₂/WO₃ exhibited good photocatalytic stability without requiring additional procedures. The photocatalytic mechanism corresponds to a Z-scheme charge transfer based on a three-component structure, where Cu₂O exhibits reduction potential responsible for O₂ production and WO₃ has oxidation potential responsible for HO· generation.

Dataset and kinetic model reaction compilation for the radical-induced degradation of formic acid and formate in aqueous solution

This article contains the individual datasets and complete reaction kinetics compilation for the formic acid/formate component of the kinetic model described in "Radiolytic Degradation of Formic Acid and Formate in Aqueous Solution: Modeling the Final Stages of Organic Mineralization under Advanced Oxidation Process Conditions" [1]. Gamma irradiation data were collected for aqueous sodium formate solutions under pH = 1.5 and 9.0 conditions. To determine the optimum conditions necessary to effectively mineralize formic acid/formate in an Advanced Oxidation Process utilized for water treatment, several solution compositions were evaluated: air, nitrogen, and nitrous oxide saturation. Data were collected by a combination of high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. These measured values were used to construct a kinetic computer model, by combining with published literature rate coefficients and optimizing specific important rate coefficients to afford the best agreement with experimental data.

Does addition of 1-octanol as a phase modifier provide radical scavenging radioprotection for N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA)?

The incorporation of 1-octanol as a phase modifier in TODGA solvent system formulations promotes TODGA radiolysis under organic-only conditions, and radioprotection under biphasic nitric acid conditions.
