Transport of Tl(I) in water-saturated porous media: Role of carbonate, phosphate and macromolecular organic matter

Efficient incorporation of highly migratory thallium into struvite structure: Unraveling the stabilization mechanisms from a mineralogical perspective

The remediation of high-concentration thallium (Tl+) contaminated wastewater is a critical environmental concern. Current research emphasizes the effectiveness of adsorption and oxidation methods for Tl+ treatment, yet challenges persist in enhancing their performance. This study explores the feasibility of emergency Tl+ wastewater treatment and elucidates the mechanisms of Tl+ incorporation into mineral structures, with a focus on the struvite mineral as a framework for Tl+ integration via NH4+ ion exchange. To assess the efficacy and mechanisms of Tl+ immobilization, we utilized comprehensive analytical techniques, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The findings reveal that struvite adsorbs Tl+ onto its surface, followed by an ion exchange process between monovalent cations (NH4+/K+) within the structure and Tl+. Ultimately, Tl+ is incorporated in the form of a (NH4,Tl)MgPO4 solid solution within the structure, achieving a remarkable maximum incorporation capacity of 320.56 mg/g, which significantly surpasses the capacity of typical adsorbents. The findings demonstrate significant Tl+ incorporation, validating the approach for emergency wastewater treatment and suggesting the potential of mineralogy in environmental remediation. This research contributes to advancing heavy metal wastewater treatment strategies, offering a foundation for further investigation.

Enhanced removal of trace thallium by photo-promoted adsorption using Prussian blue@filter papers: Performance and mechanistic insights

Developing highly efficient adsorbents for the removal of trace thallium(I) (Tl+) is crucial for addressing environmental challenges. In this study, we successfully synthesized cubic Prussian blue (PB) loading on filter papers using an intermediate layer (dopamine/polyethyleneimine) via in-situ methods. The as-prepared PB-modified FP demonstrated outstanding anti-interference properties and light-enhanced adsorption performance for Tl+ (0.5 mg/L) under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, exhibiting twice the effectiveness compared to dark conditions, even in acidic and coexisting ionic environments. This indicated its suitability for treating complex Tl+-contaminated water. Notably, the removal efficiency for trace Tl+ was almost 100%, with a maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 86.2 mg/g after 1-h photo-promoted adsorption under 365 nm UV. Characterization results supported a proposed photo-driven redox mechanism that elucidated the interaction between Tl+ and PB-modified FP. Specifically, the accelerated Fe(III) to Fe(II) redox reaction facilitated Tl+ accommodation on the surface and/or lattice of PB, enhancing Tl+ adsorption by compensating for missed positive charges. This study provides valuable insights into utilizing PB-based materials to enhance the photo-enhanced Tl+ adsorption capacity in a cost-effective, easy-to-synthesize, and environmentally friendly manner.

Cotransport of aged biochar colloids and thallium(I) in water-saturated porous media: Impact of the ionic strength, pH and aging degree

Biochar colloids entering the soil undergo aging over time and exhibit strong capabilities in adsorbing and transporting pollutants. Therefore, investigating the cotransport of aged biochar colloids and thallium (Tl(I)) in quartz sand media is crucial for understanding Tl(I) migration in underground environments. This study investigated the migration of biochar colloids with two different aging degrees and Tl(I) in quartz sand media at various pH and ionic strengths (ISs). The results revealed that under all ISs and pH, 30%AWB (biochar aged with 30 % (w/w) HNO3) inhibited Tl(I) migration in media. This inhibition primarily arose from the introduction of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups during aging, which significantly enhanced colloid adsorption onto Tl(I). At lower ISs, 30%AWB colloids exhibited greater inhibition of Tl(I) migration due to their increased adsorption capacity. Additionally, aging promoted the migration of biochar colloids in the media. Greater biochar aging notably enhanced this promotion, potentially owing to reduced colloidal particle size and the formation of biochar derivatives. Moreover, 50%AWB (biochar aged with 50 % (w/w) HNO3) inhibited Tl(I) migration under low ISs but had almost no impact under high ISs. Nonetheless, at high pH, 50%AWB colloids facilitated Tl(I) migration. This phenomenon might be attributed to the inhibitory effect of aged biochar colloids on Tl(I) adsorption onto media at a high pH, as well as the stable binding between Tl(I) and aged biochar colloids. This study discusses the cotransport of biochar with various degrees of aging and Tl(I) in media, providing insights into remediating soils contaminated with Tl.

Aggregation, retention and transport of γ-MnO2 nanoparticles in water-saturated porous media: Impact on the immobility of thallium

Nano-scale Mn oxides can act as effective stabilizers for Tl in soil and sediments. Nevertheless, the comprehensive analysis of the capacity of MnO2 to immobilize Tl in such porous media has not been systematically explored. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of γ-MnO2, a model functional nanomaterial for remediation, on the mobility of Tl in a water-saturated quartz sand-packed column. The mechanisms involved are further elucidated based on the adsorption and aggregation kinetics of γ-MnO2. The results indicate that higher ionic strength (IS) and the presence of ion Ca(II) promote the aggregation of γ-MnO2, resulting from the reduced electrostatic repulsion between particles. Conversely, an increase in pH inhibits aggregation due to enhanced interaction energy. γ-MnO2 significantly influences Tl retention and mobility, with a substantial fraction of γ-MnO2-bound Tl transported through the column. This might be attributed to the high affinity of γ-MnO2 for Tl through ion exchange reactions and precipitation at the surface of γ-MnO2. The mobility of Tl in the sand column is influenced by the γ-MnO2 colloids, exhibiting either inhibition or promotion depending on the pH, IS, and cation type of the solution. In solutions with higher IS and Ca(II), the mobility of Tl decreases as γ-MnO2 colloids tend to aggregate, strain, and block, facilitating colloidal Tl retention in porous media. Although higher pH reduces the mobility of individual Tl, it promotes the mobility of γ-MnO2 colloids, facilitating a substantial fraction of colloidal-form Tl. Consequently, the optimal conditions for stabilizing Tl by γ-MnO2 involve either high IS and low pH or the presence of competitive cations (e.g., Ca(II)). These findings provide new insights into Tl immobilization using MnO2- and Mn oxide-based functional materials, offering potential applications in the remediation of Tl contamination in soil and groundwater.

Cotransport of fullerene nanoparticles and montmorillonite colloids in porous media: Critical role of divalent cations of montmorillonite

While the cotransport of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and clay colloids in porous media has been widely studied, the influence of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay colloids on the transport process remains unclear. In this study, batch adsorption and column transport experiments were conducted to investigate the fate and transport of CNPs and clay colloids in quartz sand, with respect to the effect of monovalent-cation exchange capacity (mono-CEC), divalent-cation exchange capacity (di-CEC) and total CEC of clays. Fullerene nanoparticles (nC60) and six types of montmorillonite (ML) with different CEC were selected as modeled CNPs and clay colloids, respectively. Transport behavior of nC60 and ML was characterized using breakthrough curves (BTCs) and fitted with two-kinetic-sites colloid transport model. Results of the adsorption experiments showed a good linear correlation between the deposition of nC60 on the sand surface and the di-CEC of ML. Transport of ML and nC60 was inhibited by each other. The calculated mass recovery of nC60, as well as the fitted maximum deposition capacity and attachment rate coefficients of nC60 exhibited a strong linear relationship with the di-CEC of ML. These results indicate that divalent cations in ML interlayers play a significant role in aggregation between nC60 and ML and their cotransport. Through measurements of the particle size and zeta potentials of sole nC60 and mixtures of ML and nC60, FTIR and XPS analysis of nC60 under different conditions, and a release experiment of nC60 in a sand column, it demonstrated cation bridging (Ca2+-π) between nC60 and ML mediated by the divalent cations in ML interlayers. The study highlighted the potential of using di-CEC of clays as an indicator to predict the mobility of nC60 in clay-containing porous media and added insights to the transport behavior of CNPs in porous media.

Removal of thallium by MnOx coated limestone sand filter through regeneration of KMnO4: Combination of physiochemical and biochemical actions

Treatment of industrial thallium(Tl)-containing wastewater is crucial for mitigating environmental risks and health threats associated with this toxic metal. The incorporation of Mn oxides (MnOx) into the filtration system is a promising solution for efficient Tl(I) removal. However, further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind MnOx-enhanced filtration and the rules of its stable operation. In this study, limestone, a cost-effective material, was selected as the filter media. Raw water with Mn(II), Tl(I), and other pollutants was prepared after a thorough investigation of actual industrial wastewater conditions. KMnO4 was added to induce the formation of MnO2 on limestone surfaces, while long-term operation led to enrichment of manganese oxidizing microorganisms (MnOM). Results revealed a dual mechanism. Firstly, most Mn(II) were oxidized by KMnO4 to form MnO2 attaching to limestone sands, and both Tl(I) and residual Mn(II) were adsorbed onto the newly formed MnO2. Subsequently, enzymes secreted by MnOM facilitated oxidation of remaining Mn(II), resulting in the generation of biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) with numerous vacancies during long-term operation. The generated BioMnOx not only adsorbed Mn(II) and Tl(I) but also promoted their oxidation process. This approach offers an effective and sustainable method for removing both Mn(II) and Tl(I) from industrial wastewater, thereby addressing the challenges posed by thallium-contaminated effluents.

Treatment of wastewater containing thallium(I) by long-term operated manganese sand filter: Synergistic action of MnOx and MnOM

The long-term and stable removal of thallium (Tl) from industrial wastewater generated by mining and smelting operations remains challenging. While sand filters are commonly applied for the simultaneous removal of Mn(II) and other heavy metals, they have limited efficacy in treating Tl-contaminated wastewater. To address this gap, we operated a lab-scale Mn sand filter (MF) without added microorganisms to investigate the efficiency and mechanisms of Mn(II) and Tl(I) removal. Trends in effluent Mn(II) and Tl(I) concentrations indicated three operational stages: start-up, developing and maturation. Over time, the removal efficiency of Tl(I) gradually improved, plateauing at approximately 80 % eventually. Throughout operation, Tl(I) was sequestrated via surface complexation and ion exchange. Besides, enrichment of Sphingobium and other typical manganese oxidizing microorganisms (MnOM) during operation facilitated Mn(II) and Tl(I) oxidation and sequestration by generating biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx). Additionally, the accurate control of water quality and operating conditions during operation could also enhance removal efficiency. In summary, physicochemical actions of Mn oxides and biochemical actions of microorganisms synergistically contributed to the sequestration of Mn(II) and Tl(I). These findings provided a novel and sustainable method for the long-term and stable treatment of industrial wastewater containing thallium.

Highly inhibited transport of dissolved thallium(I) in manganese oxide-coated sand: Chemical condition effects and retention mechanisms

Thallium contamination in water can cause great danger to the environment. In this study, we synthesized manganese oxide-coated sand (MOCS) and investigated the transport and retention behaviors of Tl(I) in MOCS under different conditions. Characterization methods combined with a two-site nonequilibrium transport model were applied to explore the retention mechanisms. The results showed that Tl(I) mobility was strongly inhibited in MOCS media, and the retention capacity calculated from the fitted model was 510.41 mg/g under neutral conditions. The retention process included adsorption and oxidative precipitation by the manganese oxides coated on the sand surface. Cotransport with the same concentration of Mn(II) led to halving Tl(I) retention due to competition for reactive sites. Enhanced Tl(I) retention was observed under alkaline conditions, as increasing pH promoted electronegativity on the media surface. Moreover, the competitive cation Ca²⁺ significantly weakened Tl(I) retention by occupying adsorption sites. These findings provide new insights into understanding Tl(I) transport behavior in water-saturated porous media and suggest that manganese oxide-coated sand can be a cost-effective filter media for treating Tl-contaminated water.

Release and mobility characteristics of thallium from polluted farmland in varying fertilization: Role of cation exchange

Batch and column leaching tests were used to study thallium's release and migration behaviour and evaluate its potential toxicity risks in soil. The results indicated that leaching concentrations of Tl using TCLP and SWLP were much higher than the threshold, indicating a high risk of thallium pollution in the soil. Furthermore, the intermittent leaching rate of Tl by Ca²⁺ and HCl reached its maximum value, demonstrating the easy release of Tl. After HCl leaching, the form of Tl in the soil has changed, and ammonium sulfate has increased its extractability. Additionally, the extensive application of calcium promoted the release of Tl, increasing its potential ecological risk. Spectral analysis showed that Tl was mainly present in minerals such as Kaolinite and Jarosite, and exhibited significant adsorption capacity for Tl. HCl and Ca²⁺ damaged the crystal structure of the soil, greatly enhancing the migration and mobility of Tl in the environment. More importantly, XPS analysis confirmed that the release of Tl (I) in the soil was the leading cause of increased mobility and bioavailability. Therefore, the results revealed the risk of Tl release in the soil, providing theoretical guidance for its pollution prevention and control.

Dynamic retention of thallium(I) on humic acid: Novel insights into the heterogeneous complexation ability and responsiveness

Widely distributed soil humic acid (HA) would significantly affect the environmental migration behavior of Tl(I), but a quantitative and mechanistic understanding of the dynamic Tl(I) retention process on HA is limited. A unified kinetic model was established by coupling the humic ion-binding model with a stirred-flow kinetic model, which quantified the complexation constants and responsiveness coefficients during dynamic Tl(I)-HA complexation. Furthermore, the heterogeneous complexation mechanism of HA and Tl(I) was revealed by batch adsorption experiments, stirred-flow migration experiments, and 2D-FTIR-COS analysis. An increase in pH significantly improved the responsiveness of HA organic binding sites, promoting Tl(I) dynamic retention. Monodentate carboxyl groups induced rapid Tl(I) complexation (k_d = 1.9 min^-1) in strongly acidic environments. Under weakly acidic conditions, Tl(I) retention on HA was mainly attributed to the synergistic complexation effect of carboxyl and amide groups. Among the groups, multidentate carboxyl-phenolic hydroxyl sites could achieve sustained Tl(I) retention due to their stable complexing properties (logK = 4.48∼7.46) and slow response (k_d = 1.1 × 10^-3 min^-1). These findings are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the environmental interactions of Tl(I) with humic substances in swamp environments.

Impact of biochar colloids on thallium(I) transport in water-saturated porous media: Effects of pH and ionic strength

Understanding the migration behavior of thallium (TI) in subsurface environments is essential for Tl pollution prevention. With the wide production and utilization of biochar, the notable ability of biochar colloids to carry environmental contaminants may make these colloids important for Tl(I) mobility. This study systematically investigated the impact of wood-derived biochar (WB) and corn straw-derived biochar (CB) colloids on Tl(I) transport in water-saturated porous media under different pH (5, 7 and 10) and ionic strengths (ISs) (1, 5 and 50 mM NaNO3). WB colloids improved Tl(I) transport under all IS conditions at pH 7 due to the adsorption capacity of biochar and competition for adsorption sites on the sand surface. However, at IS 50 mM, CB colloids slightly impeded Tl(I) mobility due to the straining. In addition, both WB and CB colloids accelerated Tl(I) mobility under all pH conditions at IS 5 mM. At pH 10, the promotion effect was more obvious due to the deprotonation of O-containing functional groups and higher fluidity of biochar colloids. Furthermore, the two-site nonequilibrium model and two-site kinetic attachment/detachment model suitably described the breakthrough curves (BTCs) of Tl(I) and biochar colloids, respectively. The colloid-facilitated solute transport model could also describe Tl(I) transport influenced by biochar colloids reasonably well. This study provides insight into the migration and fate of Tl(I) in the presence of biochar colloids.

Modeling and visualizing the transport and retention of cationic and oxyanionic metals (Cd and Cr) in saturated soil under various hydrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions

Cationic and oxyanionic metals are widely existed in the aquatic and soil environment with the process of industrialization and they may behave different transport properties in aquifer systems due to the opposite charges. In this study, the comparative transport behaviors of Cd²⁺ and CrO₄^2- in water-saturated soil columns were investigated under a variety of hydrochemical and hydraulic conditions such as pH, ionic strength (IS), and flow rate. The transport mechanisms of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) were explored by fitting the breakthrough curves with a two-site non-equilibrium transport model. Results indicated that high solution pH inhibited the transport of Cd(II) due to the enhanced electrostatic interaction. In contrast, the migration of Cr(VI) was promoted with the least amount of Cr(VI) (1.23 mg) being retained in soil at high pH, ascribing to the stronger electrostatic repulsion between anions and soil surface. Meanwhile, high pH conditions were not favorable for the participation of reduced iron in the reduction process of Cr(VI), resulting in the least amount of Cr(III) detected (22%). The increase in ionic strength decreased the negativity of the potential at the adsorption plane, which enhanced the transport of cationic Cd(II) and the retardation of anionic Cr(VI). In addition, the increase in flow rate facilitated the transport of Cd(II) and Cr(VI), mainly due to the decreasing contacting with porous media and enhanced dispersion effect. These findings demonstrated that the fate and environmental behavior of metal cations and anions differed with the change of hydrochemical and hydrodynamic properties, which should be considered for the risk assessment and remediation of metal contaminated sites.

Cotransport of thallium(I) with polystyrene plastic particles in water-saturated porous media

Exploring the transport behaviors of thallium (Tl) in porous media is crucial for predicting Tl pollution in natural soils and groundwater. In recent years, the misuse of plastics has led to plastic becoming an emerging pollutant in soil. In this work, the effects of plastic particles on Tl(I) transport in water-saturated sand columns were investigated under different ionic strengths (ISs), pH values, and plastic particle sizes. The two-site nonequilibrium model was selected to fit the breakthrough curves (BTCs) of Tl(I). The results demonstrated that nanoplastics (NPs) accelerated Tl(I) transport at pH 7, which might be attributed to the competitive adsorption of NPs and Tl(I) on sand surfaces. However, at pH 5, the deposited NPs might provide more adsorption sites for Tl(I), and thus enhance its retention in the columns. In addition, the "straining" process could intercept microplastics (MPs) with Tl(I) that was attached under unfavorable attachment conditions, which would result in the inhibited mobility of Tl(I). On the other hand, the migration of plastics was restrained to some extent when Tl(I) was present. Overall, the findings from this work provided a new perspective for understanding the transport of Tl(I) and plastics in subsurface environments.
