Distributed solar desalination by membrane distillation: current status and future perspectives

Internally-cooled atmospheric water harvesting enabling improved productivity

Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting holds promise for alleviating water scarcity, but current prototypes have not shown significant increases in practical yields despite efforts in the enlarged engineering scale. This is due to weakened heat and mass transfer with a packed sorbent bed. In this work, the desiccant-coated adsorbers were employed to fabricate the water harvesting device that incorporates internal fluid for cooling and heating during sorption and desorption. Featured with an internal cooling effect, practical water productivity could be improved by 1.75-9.96 times with a low desorption temperature (45-62 °C). The continuous water harvesting system could produce 0.77-3.98 Lwater/kgsorbent/day with a thermal energy consumption of 7.7-30.4 MJ/kg in wide climates from 20 % to 80 % RH, providing a reference for device design in the engineering view. The demonstration revealed that using natural cooling in the sorption stage has great benefits in improving water harvesting performance, which can be integrated into the building sectors or a wider range of scenarios.

Surface energy-induced anti-wetting and anti-fouling enhancement of Janus membrane for membrane distillation

Membrane distillation (MD) presents a promising alternative to conventional desalination systems, particularly for the treatment of hypersaline wastewater. However, the large-scale application of MD is hindered by challenges such as membrane wetting, membrane fouling, and low permeate flux. Herein, we proposed an air/liquid interface deposition method to fabricate a Janus membrane, termed the PVDF-PDA/PEI-Si membrane. The membrane featured a nanosieving, superhydrophilic polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) layer decorated with silica nanoparticles, coupled with a microporous, hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer. The introduction of a dense PDA/PEI-Si layer featuring high surface energy significantly enhanced the wetting and fouling resistance of the membrane, with a minor effect on the permeate flux. The performance enhancement was particularly evident when hypersaline water containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and oily contaminants was used as the feed. The interactions between the membrane and contaminants were calculated using the XDLVO theory and molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the enhanced anti-wetting and anti-fouling properties, respectively. According to the XDLVO theory, a large energy barrier must be overcome for the SDS to attach onto the PDA/PEI-Si surface. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the weak interaction energy between the oily foulants and the PVDF-PDA/PEI-Si membrane due to its high surface energy. This study presents a promising approach for the fabrication of high-performance MD membranes and provides new insights into the mechanisms underlying the enhanced anti-wetting and anti-fouling properties.

H2O2 oxidation - CaO precipitation pretreatment combining forward osmosis for electroless nickel spent tank liquid (ENSTL) reduction

The electroless nickel spent tank liquid (ENSTL), as a typical hazardous waste, contains a variety of refractory organic substances as well as heavy metals and inorganic salts. Generally, ENSTL is delegated for disposing by qualified hazardous waste disposal departments in China. However, the temporary storage, transportation, and higher entrusted disposal expenses increase the burden on enterprises producing the hazardous ENSTL. This paper explored an oxidation/precipitation pretreatment and forward osmosis (FO) combined process for ENSTL reduction. 400 mmol/L Hydrogen peroxide and 5.0 wt% calcium oxide were selected as the optimal pretreatment in order to minimize the osmotic pressure of ENSTL, by which the conductivity was significantly reduced from 50.8 mS/cm to 26.8 mS/cm. As a result, the concentrating factor (N) could be dramatically increased from 2.45 by the direct FO to 8.71 by the combined system. Accordingly, the average water flux during the 24 h concentrating cycle increased from 2.47 L/(m2·h) to 4.56 L/(m2·h). TOC rejection rate decreased from 90.23% to 84.39% due to the transformation of organic matter forms by the chemical oxidation during the pretreatment. Meanwhile, TP, Ni and NH4+ rejection rates decreased to a certain extent, which may related to the mitigation of membrane fouling by the pretreatment.

Molecular insights into complexation between protein and silica: Spectroscopic and simulation investigations

The synergistic effect of protein-silica complexation leads to exacerbated membrane fouling in the membrane desalination process, exceeding the individual impacts of silica scaling or protein fouling. However, the molecular-level dynamics of silica binding to proteins and the resulting structural changes in both proteins and silica remain poorly understood. This study investigates the complexation process between silica and proteins-negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) and positively charged lysozyme (LYZ) at neutral pH-using infrared spectroscopy (IR), in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and multiple computational simulations. The findings reveal that both protein and silica structures undergo changes during the complexation process, with calcium ions in the solution significantly exacerbating these alterations. In particular, in situ ATR-FTIR combined with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis shows that BSA experiences more pronounced unfolding, providing additional binding sites for silica adsorption compared to LYZ. The adsorbed proteins promote silica polymerization from lower-polymerized to higher-polymerized species. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate greater conformational variation in BSA through root-mean-square-deviation analysis and the bridging role of calcium ions via mean square displacement analysis. Molecular docking and density functional theory calculations identify the binding sites and energy of silica on proteins. In summary, this research offers a comprehensive understanding of the protein-silica complexation process, contributing to the knowledge of synergistic behaviors of inorganic scaling and organic fouling on membrane surfaces. The integrated approach used here may also be applicable for exploring other complex complexation processes in various environments.

Applications of electrically conductive membranes in water treatment via membrane distillation: Joule heating, membrane fouling/scaling/wetting mitigation and monitoring

Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermally driven separation process that is driven by phase change. The core of this technology is the hydrophobic microporous membrane that prevents mass transfer of the liquid while allowing the vapor phase to pass through the membrane's pores. Currently, MD is challenged by its high energy consumption and membrane degradation due to fouling, scaling and wetting. The use of electrically conductive membranes (ECMs) is a promising alternative method to overcome these challenges by inducing localized Joule heating, as well as mitigating and monitoring membrane fouling/scaling/wetting. The objective of this review is to consolidate recent advances in ECMs from the standpoint of conductive materials, membrane fabrication methodologies, and applications in MD processes. First, the mechanisms of ECMs-based MD processes are reviewed. Then the current trends in conductive materials and membrane fabrication methods are discussed. Thereafter, a comprehensive review of ECMs in MD applications is presented in terms of the different processes using Joule heating and various works related to membrane fouling, scaling, and wetting control and monitoring. Key insights in terms of energy consumption, economic viability and scalability are furnished to provide readers with a holistic perspective of the ECMs potential to achieve better performances and higher efficiencies in MD. Finally, we illustrate our perspectives on the innovative methods to address current challenges and provide insights for advancing new ECMs designs. Overall, this review sums up the current status of ECMs, looking at the wide range of conductive materials and array of fabrication methods used thus far, and putting into perspective strategies to deliver a more competitive ECMs-based MD process in water treatment.

A Salt-Resistant and Antibacterial Cu2 ZnSnS4 -Based Hydrogel for High Efficient Photothermal Distillation in Seawater Desalination and Sewage Purification

Solar steam generation technology (SSGT) using unlimited solar energy is regarded as one of the most promising sustainable technologies to produce clean water. However, most of studies on SSGT simply focus on how to improve salt resistance as well as exclude inorganic and organic pollutants in targeted water, and only very limited studies pay attention to the micro-organisms in the collected water. Herein, one porous Cu2 ZnSnS4 -based photothermal hydrogel (CZTS-PH) with antibacterial properties as well as good salt resistance was successfully prepared. The CZTS-PH was measured with the water evaporation rate as high as 3.249 kg m-2  h-1 and photothermal conversion efficiency of 96.3 % under one sun irradiation. Impressively, owing to the amino groups in the skeleton, CZTS-PH can significantly deteriorate the cell membrane and lead to the death of the Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), which ensures its long-term stability photothermal conversion and the safety of clean water. Overall, the admired photothermal conversion efficiency, and the excellent salt resistance and antibacterial performance suggest that CZTS-PH could be a promising full-scale device applied in seawater desalination and water purification.

Sulfate mineral scaling: From fundamental mechanisms to control strategies

Sulfate scaling, as insoluble inorganic sulfate deposits, can cause serious operational problems in various industries, such as blockage of membrane pores and subsurface media and impairment of equipment functionality. There is limited article to bridge sulfate formation mechanisms with field scaling control practice. This article reviews the molecular-level interfacial reactions and thermodynamic basis controlling homogeneous and heterogeneous sulfate mineral nucleation and growth through classical and non-classical pathways. Common sulfate scaling control strategies were also reviewed, including pretreatment, chemical inhibition and surface modification. Furthermore, efforts were made to link the fundamental theories with industrial scale control practices. Effects of common inhibitors on different steps of sulfate formation pathways (i.e., ion pair and cluster formation, nucleation, and growth) were thoroughly discussed. Surface modifications to industrial facilities and membrane units were clarified as controlling either the deposition of homogeneous precipitates or the heterogeneous nucleation. Future research directions in terms of optimizing sulfate chemical inhibitor design and improving surface modifications are also discussed. This article aims to keep the readers abreast of the latest development in mechanistic understanding and control strategies of sulfate scale formation and to bridge knowledge developed in interfacial chemistry with engineering practice.

NiSe and CoSe Topological Nodal-Line Semimetals: A Sustainable Platform for Efficient Thermoplasmonics and Solar-Driven Photothermal Membrane Distillation

The control of heat at the nanoscale via the excitation of localized surface plasmons in nanoparticles (NPs) irradiated with light holds great potential in several fields (cancer therapy, catalysis, desalination). To date, most thermoplasmonic applications are based on Ag and Au NPs, whose cost of raw materials inevitably limits the scalability for industrial applications requiring large amounts of photothermal NPs, as in the case of desalination plants. On the other hand, alternative nanomaterials proposed so far exhibit severe restrictions associated with the insufficient photothermal efficacy in the visible, the poor chemical stability, and the challenging scalability. Here, it is demonstrated the outstanding potential of NiSe and CoSe topological nodal-line semimetals for thermoplasmonics. The anisotropic dielectric properties of NiSe and CoSe activate additional plasmonic resonances. Specifically, NiSe and CoSe NPs support multiple localized surface plasmons in the optical range, resulting in a broadband matching with sunlight radiation spectrum. Finally, it is validated the proposed NiSe and CoSe-based thermoplasmonic platform by implementing solar-driven membrane distillation by adopting NiSe and CoSe nanofillers embedded in a polymeric membrane for seawater desalination. Remarkably, replacing Ag with NiSe and CoSe for solar membrane distillation increases the transmembrane flux by 330% and 690%, respectively. Correspondingly, costs of raw materials are also reduced by 24 and 11 times, respectively. The results pave the way for the advent of NiSe and CoSe for efficient and sustainable thermoplasmonics and related applications exploiting sunlight within the paradigm of the circular blue economy.

The advent of thermoplasmonic membrane distillation

Freshwater scarcity is a vital societal challenge related to climate change, population pressure, and agricultural and industrial demands. Therefore, sustainable desalination/purification of salty/contaminated water for human uses is particularly relevant. Membrane distillation is an emerging hybrid thermal-membrane technology with the potential to overcome the drawbacks of conventional desalination by a synergic exploitation of the water-energy nexus. Although membrane distillation is considered a green technology, efficient heat management remains a critical concern affecting the cost of the process and hindering its viability at large scale. A multidisciplinary approach that involves materials chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials and polymer science is required to solve this problem. The combination of solar energy with membrane distillation is considered a potentially feasible low-cost approach for providing high-quality freshwater with a low carbon footprint. In particular, recent discoveries about efficient light-to-heat conversion in nanomaterials have opened unprecedented perspectives for the implementation of sunlight-based renewable energy in membrane distillation. The integration of nanofillers enabling photothermal effects into membranes has been demonstrated to be able to significantly enhance the energy efficiency without impacting on economic costs. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the state of the art, the opportunities, open challenges and pitfalls of the emerging field of solar-driven membrane distillation. We also assess the peculiar physicochemical properties and synthesis scalability of photothermal materials, as well as the strategies for their integration into polymeric nanocomposite membranes enabling efficient light-to-heat conversion and freshwater.

A self-healing PVDF-ZnO/MXene membrane with universal fouling resistance for real seawater desalination

Seawater desalination is regarded as a possible way to overcome current shortages of fresh water, and membrane-based air humidification-dehumidification desalination (MHDD) represents a promising technique owing to its high-quality freshwater and cost-effectiveness; however, its development is restricted by membrane fouling. While a superhydrophobic membrane provides resistance to hydrophilic fouling, it remains susceptible to hydrophobic fouling. Here, a polyvinylidene fluoride-ZnO/MXene (PVDF-ZM) membrane, with a reversible conversion between superhydrophobicity and hydrophilicity was fabricated to achieve universal fouling resistance. It earned a competitive permeate flux (3.93 kg·m^-2·h^-1) and an excellent salt rejection (>99.5%). The membrane exhibited a strong anti-hydrophilic fouling ability, benefiting from its superhydrophobicity and rough surface. The adsorbed hydrophobic contaminants could desorb from the membrane surface under UV irradiation when transforming the surface wettability into hydrophilicity, exhibiting an anti-hydrophobic fouling ability. Subsequently, the membrane surface returned to the hydrophobic state under dark conditions. The membrane recovered 90% of the original permeation flux, while maintaining a salt rejection of >99.5%, thus realizing membrane self-healing. The PVDF-ZM membrane holds promise for sustainable desalination applications.

Insights into the enhanced flux of graphene oxide composite membrane in direct contact membrane distillation: The different role at evaporation and condensation interfaces

Graphene oxide (GO) coating has recently been reported as a novel approach to increase membrane flux of membrane distillation (MD), yet the phenomena underlying the process are still not fully understood. In this study, a mathematical model based on capillary-film assumption was developed and validated with the results (R²>0.99) from a series of MD experiments. According to the model, when GO layer was placed at the evaporation interface, the temperature difference across the membrane surface increases significantly (44.2%∼92.0%) and the temperature polarization coefficient is increased greatly from 0.29∼0.38 to around 0.55. This leads to a big increase of driving force for higher heat flow and subsequently mass flux (17.8∼45.5%). However, the vapor pressure on membrane surface was decreased due to Kelvin effect of GO capillary pores, which has a negative influence on the driving force, accounting for about 26.9% to 52.6% drop in the achieved flux. In comparison, when GO layer was placed at the condensation interface, the temperature difference across the membrane surface decreases slightly (7.2∼12.2%), but the reduced vapor pressure on GO capillary pores due to Kelvin effect become the dominant factor affecting membrane flux, resulting in an increase mass flux of 12.4∼16.4%. The model developed in this study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the role of GO coating on flux improvement, and can be used for further development of high flux membranes.

Viability of a practical multicyclic sorption-based water harvester with improved water yield

Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has emerged as an attractive way to relieve water scarcity. However, the daily water yield of currently reported SAWH devices remains low to satisfy the rising demand for drinking water. The sorption and desorption kinetics, long-term stability and especially facile scaling-fabrication of adsorbents and scaled-up device implementation have become the bottleneck to such large-scale SAWH application. To overcome these challenges, an air-cooled SAWH device was fabricated to investigate its atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) performance under real island climate and its feasibility of multicyclic operation. Under monocyclic operation, the device demonstrated the superior water productivity as much as 3.9 kg day^-1, or 0.39 kg_water kg_adsorbent^-1 day^-1, at 31 °C and 70% RH, with a thermal efficiency of 25.4% (desorption at 94 °C). The SAWH device demonstrated successful water production through 2 adsorption-desorption cycles within one day, with increased thermal efficiency to as high as 32.2% and increased water harvesting performance up to 0.42 kg_water kg_adsorbent^-1 day^-1 by 20-90%. This is the first demonstration in multicyclic SAWH at large scales, holding the promise of large-scale and practical water supply in island areas while opening up new applications such as indoor dehumidification.

Interfacial Solar Steam/Vapor Generation for Heating and Cooling

Interfacial solar steam/vapor technology uses abundant and clean solar energy and water to achieve heating and cooling, a promising technology to alleviate environmental and energy issues. To obtain higher conversion and utilization efficiency, designing and optimizing materials, structures, and devices of interfacial solar steam/vapor technologies attract the attention of the research community. Given the significant progress made in the past 5 years, it is valuable to systematically summarize and discuss recent developments and future trends in this new multidisciplinary direction. This review aims to introduce interfacial solar steam/vapor principles to realize heating and cooling and the recent progress in materials, structures, devices, and applications. Meanwhile, some unsolved scientific and technical problems with outlook will also be discussed, hoping to promote further the rapid development and application of interfacial solar steam/vapor technology in heating and cooling to alleviate energy and environmental problems.

Condensation of water vapor from humid air inside vertical channels formed by flat plates

Condensation of humid air is an important process in thermal and process engineering and a subject of many currently research-intensive scientific domains, such as atmospheric water harvesting and seawater desalination. The nature of (water) vapor condensation in the presence of non-condensable gas (NCG) such as air differs significantly from the case with the pure, quiescent vapor condensation. In the literature, simple models that describe the forced flow condensation of water vapor in the presence of air on a series of vertical flat plates are hard to find. Here we present a simple and computationally efficient semi-empirical correlation describing forced flow condensation from humid air inside vertical channels formed by flat plates. The correlation accounts air as a non-condensing gas, different heights of vertical plates, and different thermal-hydraulic parameters. The correlation has been experimentally validated and shows excellent agreement, as 90% of theoretically predicted values are within ±12% of experimental data.

Sunflower-Stalk-Based Solar-Driven Evaporator with a Confined 2D Water Channel and an Enclosed Thermal-Insulating Cellular Structure for Stable and Efficient Steam Generation

Given the worsening freshwater scarcity around the world, the interfacial solar-driven steam generation for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment has attracted wide attention due to its rich energy resources, convenience, and environmental friendliness. However, challenges still remain for developing high-efficiency interfacial solar-driven steam generation devices from low-cost, readily available, and green material resources. Herein, taking advantage of the delicate composite structure of the sunflower stalk, a sunflower-stalk-based solar-driven evaporator with a confined two-dimensional (2D) water supply pathway and an enclosed thermal-insulating structure is reported. The pith of sunflower stalks is composed of well-arranged honeycomb-like parenchyma cells that endow sunflower stalks with low thermal conductivity comparable to that of synthetic plastic foam. The low-tortuosity vascular bundles in the skin can serve as a natural 2D water pathway for rapid water transportation. The benefit of these functions is that an evaporator based on a carbon-nanotube-coated sunflower stalk (C-Ss) achieves a high evaporation rate of 1.76 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m^-2). The C-Ss also shows a highly stable evaporation performance, high ion rejection efficiency, and a self-cleaning ability during the actual seawater desalination process. With advantages of abundant resources, easy fabrication, and sustainability, this C-Ss-based evaporator provides a promising choice for freshwater production in developing regions.
