Interaction between graphene oxide and acetaminophen in water under simulated sunlight: Implications for environmental photochemistry of PPCPs

Iron single atoms anchored on ultrathin carbon nitride photocatalyst for visible light-driven water decontamination

Graphitic carbon nitride has gained considerable attention as a visible-light photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is restricted by its limited capacity for absorbing visible light and swift recombination of charge carriers. To overcome this bottleneck, we fabricated an atomic Fe-dispersed ultrathin carbon nitride (Fe-UTCN) photocatalyst via one-step thermal polymerization. Fe-UTCN showed high efficiency in the photodegradation of acetaminophen (APAP), achieving > 90 % elimination within 60-min visible light irradiation. The anchoring of Fe atoms improved the photocatalytic activity of UTCN by narrowing the bandgap from 2.50 eV to 2.33 eV and suppressing radiative recombination. Calculations by density functional theory revealed that the Fe-N4 sites (adsorption energy of - 3.10 eV) were preferred over the UTCN sites (adsorption energy of - 0.18 eV) for the adsorption of oxygen and the subsequent formation of O2•-, the dominant reactive species in the degradation of APAP. Notably, the Fe-UTCN catalyst exhibited good stability after five successive runs and was applicable to complex water matrices. Therefore, Fe-UTCN, a noble-metal-free photocatalyst, is a promising candidate for visible light-driven water decontamination.

Optimization, kinetics, and pathways of pharmaceutical pollutant degradation using solar Fenton technique

Solar Fenton is an important and extensively used advanced oxidation process (AOP) to degrade pharmaceutical pollutants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of simultaneous degradation of the mixed pollutants (amoxicillin, acetaminophen, and ciprofloxacin) for an aqueous solution using the solar Fenton process. Operating parameters such as pH, iron doses, H2O2 doses, pollutant concentrations, and time were studied. From the experimental results, the ideal conditions were obtained for the removal of mixed pollutants such as pH 3, Fe2+ 0.04 mM, H2O2 4 mM, the concentration of the mixed pollutants 5 mg/L, solar radiation 400 W/m2, and time 10 min, respectively. The pseudo-first-order kinetics were utilized to investigate the degradation efficacy of the mixed pollutants. The result of the study indicates that the degradation efficiency was > 99% for the mixed pollutants. A maximum of 63% mineralization was observed, and hydroxyl radical scavenger effects were studied. The best optimal conditions were applied to assess the spiked wastewater (municipal wastewater (MWW) and hospital wastewater (HWW)). The highest elimination rates for AMX, ACET, and CIP were observed as 65%, 89%, and 85% for MWW and 76%, 92%, and 80% for HWW, respectively. The degraded by-products were detected by LC-ESI-MS in the water matrix (aqueous solution and spiked wastewater), and ECOSAR analysis was performed for the transformed products. The study concluded that the solar Fenton technique is promising and effective for the removal of mixed pollutants from the water matrix.

Recycling Graphite from Spent Lithium Batteries for Efficient Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation to Obtain Clean Water

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology is regarded as an attracting sustainable strategy for obtaining portable water from seawater and wastewater, and the recycle of waste materials to fabricate efficient photothermal materials as evaporator to efficiently utilize solar energy is very critical, but still difficult. To this purpose, graphite recovered from spent lithium-ion batteries (SLIBs) was realized using a simple acid leaching method, and a reconstructed graphite-based porous hydrogel (RG-PH) was subsequently fabricated by crosslinking foaming method. The incorporation of reconstructed graphite (RG) improves the mechanical characteristics of hydrogels and the light absorption performance significantly. The evaporation rate of optimized RG-PH can constantly reach 3.4278 kg m-2  h-1 for desalination under a one solar irradiation, and it also showed the excellent salt resistance in various salty water. Moreover, RG-PH has a strong elimination of a variety of organic contaminants in wastewater, including the typical volatile organic compound of phenol. This research shows the potential application of flexible and durable solar evaporators made from waste materials in purifying seawater and wastewater, not only contributing to carbon neutrality by recycling graphite from SLIBs, but also ensuring the cost-effectiveness harvest of solar energy for constantly obtaining clean water.

Efficiently photocatalysis activation of peroxydisulfate by Fe-doped g-C3N5 for pharmaceuticals and personal care products degradation

Peroxydisulfate (PDS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP) in wastewater treatment. In this study, a Fe-doped g-C₃N₅ (Fe@g-C₃N₅) was synthesized as a photocatalyst for catalyzing the PDS-based AOPs to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) at pH 3 and Naproxen (NPX) at pH 7. The photocatalytic performance of Fe@g-C₃N₅ was 19% and 67% higher than g-C₃N₅ and g-C₃N₄ for degradation of TH at pH 3, respectively, while it was 21% and 35% at pH 7. The Fe:N ratio in Fe@g-C₃N₅, was calculated as 1:3.79, indicating that the doped Fe atom formed a FeN₄ structure with an adjacent two-layer graphite structure of g-C₃N₅, which improved the charge separation capacity of g-C₃N₅ and act as a new reaction center that can efficiently combine and catalyze the PDS to radicals. Although the intrinsic photo-degradation performance is weak, the photocatalytic performance of Fe@g-C₃N₅ has great room for the improvement and application in wastewater treatment.

Molecular Oxygen Activation by Citric Acid Boosted Pyrite-Photo-Fenton Process for Degradation of PPCPs in Water

Pyrite has been used in photo-Fenton reactions for the degradation of pollutants, but the application of photo-Fenton processes with extra H₂O₂ in real water/wastewater treatment has still been limited by the economic cost of H₂O₂ and artificial light sources. Herein, citric acid (CA) and simulated/natural sunlight are used to develop a pyrite-based photo-Fenton system (pyrite-CA-light) in situ generating H₂O₂ through the enhanced activation of molecular oxygen. The degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), especially acetaminophen (APAP) as the main target pollutant, in the pyrite-CA-light system was investigated. The effects of influencing factors such as various organic acids, APAP concentration, pH, pyrite dosage, CA concentration and co-existing anions (HCO₃^-, Cl^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2- and H₂PO₄^-) were examined. At a pyrite dosage of 0.1 g L^-1, CA concentration of 0.6 mM and an initial pH of 6.0, the degradation efficiency of APAP (30 μM) was 99.1% within 30 min under the irradiation of xenon lamp (70 W, λ ≥ 350 nm). Almost the same high efficiency of APAP degradation (93.9%) in the system was achieved under natural sunlight irradiation (ca. 650 W m^-2). The scavenging experiments revealed that the dominant active species for degrading APAP was hydroxyl radical (HO^•). Moreover, a quantitative structural-activity relationship (QSAR) model for pseudo-first-order rate constants (k_obs) was established with a high significance (R² = 0.932, p = 0.001) by using three descriptors: octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow), dissociation constant (pK_a) and highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). This work provides an innovative strategy of the photo-Fenton process for the degradation of PPCPs using natural minerals and ordinary carboxylic acid under sunlight.
