Reductive dehalogenation in groundwater by Si-Fe(II) co-precipitates enhanced by internal electric field and low vacancy concentrations

Boosting peroxymonosulfate activation via Fe-Cu bimetallic hollow nanoreactor derived from copper smelting slag for efficient degradation of organics: The dual role of Cu

Valorization of iron-rich metallurgical slags in the construction of Fenton-like catalysts has an appealing potential from the perspective of sustainable development. For the first time, copper smelting slag (CSS) was utilized as the precursor to synthesize hollow sea urchin-like Fe-Cu nanoreactors (Cu1.5Fe1Si) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) degradation. The hyper-channels and nano-sized cavities were formed in the catalysts owing to the induction and modification of Cu, not only promoting the in-situ growth of silicates and the formation of cavities due to the etching of SiO2 microspheres, but also resulting the generation of nanotubes through the distortion and rotation of the nanosheets. It was found that 100 % CTC degradation rate can be achieved within 10 min for Cu1.5Fe1Si, 75 times higher than that of Cu0Fe1Si (0.0024 up to 0.18 M-1‧min-1). The unique nanoconfined microenvironment structure could enrich reactants in the catalyst cavities, prolong the residence time of molecules, and increase the utilization efficiency of active species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Cu1.5Fe1Si has strong adsorption energy and excellent electron transport capacity for PMS, and Fe-Fe sites are mainly responsible for the activation of PMS, while Cu assists in accelerating the Fe(II)/Fe(Ⅲ) cycle and promotes the catalytic efficiency. The excellent mineralization rate (83.32 % within 10 min) and efficient treatment of CTC in consecutive trials corroborated the high activity and stability of the Cu1.5Fe1Si. This work provides a new idea for the rational design of solid waste-based eco-friendly functional materials, aiming at consolidating their practical application in advanced wastewater treatment.

Fe(II) coordination transition regulates reductive dechlorination: The overlooked abiotic role of lactate

The coordination environment of Fe(II) significantly affect the reductive reactivity of Fe(II). Lactate is a common substrate for enhancing microbial dechlorination, but its effect on abiotic Fe(II)-driven reductive dechlorination is largely ignored. In this study, the structure-reactivity relationship of Fe(II) is investigated by regulating the ratio of lactate:Fe(II). This work shows that lactate-Fe(II) complexing enhances the abiotic Fe(II)-driven reductive dechlorination with the optimum lactate:Fe(II) ratio of 10:20. The formed hydrogen bond (Fe-OH∙∙∙∙∙∙O = C-) and Fe-O-C metal-ligand bond result in a reduced Fe(II) coordination number from six to four, which lead to the transition of Fe(II) coordination geometry from octahedron to tetrahedron/square planar. Coordinatively unsaturated Fe(II) results in the highest reductive dechlorination reactivity towards carbon tetrachloride (k1 = 0.26254 min-1). Excessive lactate concentration (> 10 mM) leads to an increased Fe(II) coordination number from four to six with a decreased reductive reactivity. Electrochemical characterization and XPS results show that lactate-Fe(II)-I (C3H5O3-:Fe(II) = 10:20) has the highest electron-donating capacity. This study reveals the abiotic effect of lactate on reductive dechlorination in a subsurface-reducing environment where Fe(II) is usually abundant.

Fulvic acid enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation over Co-Fe binary metals for efficient degradation of emerging bisphenols

Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are emerging bisphenols, which have become the main substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA) in industrial production and are also considered as new environmental pollution challenges. Thus, the necessity for an effective approach to remove BPF and BPS is essential. In this study, fulvic acid (FA) was used to modify Co-Fe binary metals (CFO) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The characterization results demonstrated that CFO changed significantly in morphology after compounding with FA, with smaller particle size and 5.6 times larger specific surface area, greatly increasing the active sites of catalyst; Moreover, humic acid-like compounds increased the surface functional groups of CFO, especially phenolic hydroxyl, which could effectively prolong the PMS activation. The concentration of all reactive species, such as SO₄•^-, •OH, O₂•^-, and ¹O₂ increased in FA@CFO/PMS system. As a result, the degradation efficiency of CFO for both BPF and BPS was significantly improved after compounding FA, which also had a wide range of pH applications. The degradation pathways of both BPF and BPS were proposed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our findings are expected to provide new strategies and methods for remediation of environmental pollution caused by emerging bisphenols.
