Water-energy-greenhouse gas nexus of a novel high-rate activated sludge-two-stage vertical up-flow constructed wetland system for low-carbon wastewater treatment

Nitrogen and nitrous oxides emission characteristics of anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process under different oxygen regulation strategies

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) (i.e., nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)), which could be produced in wastewater treatment process and result in greenhouse effect and atmospheric pollution, respectively, have been studied limitedly in their emission characteristics and transformation mechanisms. In this study, intelligent oxygen regulation was applied in anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment process (I-A/O), and its effects on regulating NOx and N2O transformations were extensively explored by comparing it with conventional A/O process (C-A/O). Results showed that the average emission amounts of N2O and NOx in I-A/O were 7.45 ± 0.66 mg and 1.88 ± 0.10 mg, respectively. Satisfactory reduction of N2O by 29.28 %-45.08 % was achieved in I-A/O compared to that of C-A/O, but together with increased NOx emission by 83.19 %-120.57 %. Pearson correlation and transcriptional analysis suggested that NO2--N reduction in the anoxic phase dominated N2O production, while no significant N2O production in the oxic phase was found. Hence, the reduced N2O production in I-A/O was mainly attributed to its efficient denitrification process. On the other hand, both the anoxic and oxic phases played important roles in NO production. More importantly, sufficient oxygen in I-A/O promoted the ammonia oxidation process, resulting in higher NO emission in I-A/O in the oxic phase. The imbalance in NO and N2O emissions was then amplified by the NOR enzyme, which mediates the conversion of NO to N2O in both the anoxic and oxic phases. Besides, carbon emission reduction by 31.32 %-36.50 % was obtained in I-A/O due to aeration consumption savings and greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to C-A/O. Overall, intelligent oxygen regulation optimized the nitrogen transformation and achieved carbon emission reduction in A/O process, but special attention should be paid to the associated risk caused by increased NO emissions.

New insights for simultaneous nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas emissions reduction of constructed wetland by optimizing its redox environment through manganese oxide addition

Manganese oxide (MnOx) is receiving increased interest in the nutrient removal of constructed wetlands (CWs); however, its service effectiveness for simultaneous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction is still vague. In this study, three vertical flow CWs, i.e., volcanics (CCW), manganese sand uniformly mixing with volcanics (Mn-CW) and MnOx doped volcanics (MnV-CW), were constructed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of MnOx on nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. The results showed that the MnOx doped volcanics optimized the oxidation-reduction potential surrounding the substrate (-164.0 ∼ +141.1 mv), and resulted in the lowest GHG emissions (CO2-equivalent) from MnV-CW, 16.8-36.5 % lower than that of Mn-CW and CCW. This was mainly ascribed to mitigation of N2O produced during the NO3--N reduction process, according to results of 15N stable isotope labeling. Analysis of the microbial community structure revealed that due to the optimized redox conditions through chemical doping of MnOx on volcanics, the abundance of microbe involved in denitrification and Mn-oxidizing process in the MnV-CW was significantly increased at genus level, which led to a higher Mn cycling efficiency between biogenic MnOx and Mn2+, and enhanced denitrification efficiency and N2O emission reduction. This study would help to understand and provide a preferable reference for future applications for manganese-based CW.

Environmental impacts on algal-bacterial-based aquaponics system by different types of carbon source addition: water quality and greenhouse gas emission

Carbon source addition is an important way improving the carbon and nitrogen transformation in aquaculture system; however, its effectiveness of algal-bacterial-based aquaponics (AA) through carbon source addition is still vague. In this study, the influences of organic carbon (OC-AA system) and inorganic carbon (IC-AA system) addition and without carbon source addition (C-AA system) on the operational performance of AA system were investigated. Results showed that 10.1-19.5% increase of algal-bacterial biomass enhanced the purifying effect of ammonia nitrogen in OC-AA system and IC-AA system relative to C-AA system. Moreover, extra electron donor supply in the OC-AA system obtained the lowest NO3--N concentration. However, that was at the cost of aggravated N2O conversion ratio, which increased by more than 2.0-folds than other systems, attributing to 2.9-folds increase of nirS gene abundance. In addition, carbon source addition increased the pH and then decreased the fish biomass production of AA system. The results of this study would provide theoretical supports of carbon source addition on the performance of nutrient transformation and greenhouse gas effect in AA system.

Effect of salinity on carbon sequestration in constructed wetlands and its functional mechanisms

Currently, many constructed wetlands (CWs) are facing the threat of salinization, but its effect on the carbon sequestration function of CWs is still unclear. In this study, three CWs with different salinities (i.e., control: C-CW; low salinity: LS-CW; high salinity: HS-CW) were conducted. Increased salinity significantly reduced the carbon sequestration in CWs. The highest carbon sequestration was observed in C-CW (5.1 ± 0.2 kg C·m-2·y-1), and the carbon sequestration capacity of plants was identified as the major influencing factor. The substrate carbon pool decreased with salinity since it altered plant carbon inputs, enzyme activities, and microbial community structure. However, the decrement in the carbon pool management index with salinity indicated that salinity could enhance carbon pool stability and subsequently reduce carbon emissions of CWs. These findings improve the understanding in relationships between salinity and carbon sequestration in CWs and provide theoretical support for the proper management of CWs.

Insights of microalgal municipal wastewater treatment at low temperatures: Performance, microbiota patterns, and cold-adaptation of tubular and aeration column photobioreactors

In order to refine the treatment of microalgae consortium (MC) for municipal wastewater (MWW) during the winter, this study investigated the effectiveness of tubular and aeration column photobioreactors (TPBR and APBR) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) during winter by two start-up modes: microalgae/microalgae-activated sludge (AS). The operation results showed that under 5.7-13.1 °C, TPBR enhanced the assimilation of N and P pollutant by microalgal accumulation, meeting the Chinese discharge standard within 24 h (NH4+-N, TP, and COD ≤8.0, 0.5, and 50 mg·L-1). The microbial community profiles were identified and showed that inoculating AS under low-temperature still promoted bacterial interspecific association, but influenced by the inhibition of microbial diversity by the homogeneous circulation of TPBR, the nitrogen transfer function of MC was lower than that of APBR at low temperatures, except nitrogen fixation (K02588), nitrosification (K10944, K10945, and K10946), assimilatory nitrate reduction (K00366), and ammonification (K01915 and K05601). And the intermittent aeration in the APBR was still beneficial in increasing microbial diversity, which was more beneficial for reducing COD through microbial collaboration. In the treatment, the cryotolerant MGPM were Delftia, Romboutsia, Rhizobiales, and Bacillus, and the cold stress-related genes that were highly up-regulated were defense signaling molecules (K03671 and K00384), cold shock protein gene (K03704), and cellular protector (K01784) were present in both PBRs. This study provided a reference for the feasibility of the low temperature treatment of MC with the different types of PBR, which improved the application of wastewater treatment in more climatic environments.

Is constructed wetlands carbon source or carbon sink? Case analysis based on life cycle carbon emission accounting

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to polish the effluent of wastewater treatment plants and micro-polluted river or lake water. However, the impact of large-scale applications of CWs on carbon emissions is unclear. In this study, the carbon footprints of two full-scale hybrid CWs were determined based on life cycle assessment (LCA). Results showed that the carbon emission of CW ranged from 0.10 to 0.14 kg CO2-eq/m3, and was significantly correlated with the influent chemical oxygen demand loads and electricity consumption. However, CW would approach carbon neutrality during the service period when taking plant carbon sequestration into consideration. Compared with other advanced wastewater treatment technologies, CWs showed significant low-carbon emission and cost-effective benefits. This study clarified the role of CWs in the carbon cycle and would provide guidance for the construction and management of CWs.
