Isotopically labeled ozone: A new approach to elucidate the formation of ozonation products

Lifetimes and decay mechanisms of isotopically substituted ozone above the dissociation threshold: matching quantum and classical dynamics

Energies and lifetimes of vibrational resonances were computed for 18O-enriched isotopologue 50O3 = {16O16O18O and 16O18O16O} of the ozone molecule using hyperspherical coordinates and the method of complex absorbing potential. Various types of scattering resonances were identified, including roaming OO-O rotational states, the series corresponding to continuation of bound vibrational resonances of highly excited bending or symmetric stretching vibrational modes. Such a series become metastable above the dissociation limit. The coupling between the vibrationally excited O2 fragment and rotational roaming gives rise to Feshbach type resonances in ozone. Different paths for the formation and decay of symmetric 16O18O16O and asymmetric species 16O16O18O were also identified. The symmetry properties of the total rovibronic wave functions of the 18O-enriched isotopologues are discussed in the context of allowed dissociation channels.

Molecular Characteristics and Formation Mechanisms of Unknown Ozonation Byproducts during the Treatment of Flocculated Nanofiltration Leachate Concentrates Using O3 and UV/O3 Processes

Both ozone (O3) and UV/O3 treatment processes can effectively remove organic matter in the flocculated membrane filtration concentrate from landfill leachate, but the ozonation byproducts (OBPs) generated in the processes remain unknown. Using electrospray ionization-coupled Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS), this study investigated the molecular characteristics of unknown OBPs and their formation mechanisms during the treatment of flocculated nanofiltration concentrate (FNFC) using the O3 and UV/O3 processes. The results showed that after being treated by the O3 and UV/O3 processes, the average value of the oxygen-to-carbon ratio (O/Cavg) in the FNFC organic matter increased substantially from 0.49 to 0.61-0.64 and 0.63-0.71, respectively, with an O3 dosage of 13.4-54.4 mg/min. The main OBPs were CHO and CHON compounds, which were mainly produced through oxygenation (+O2/+O3 and -H2+O2), oxidative deamination (-NH3+O2), decyclopropyl (-C3H4), and deisopropyl (-C3H6) reactions. The hydroxyl radical (•OH) can intensify these reactions, resulting in an abundance of OBPs with a high oxidation degree and low molecular weight. OBPs at five m/z values were fragmented and analyzed with tandem mass spectrometry, and abundant hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups, and carbonyl groups were tentatively identified, presenting a potential toxicity to aquatic organisms. Due to the high molecular diversity of the OBPs in FNFC, their lower ΔGCoxo compared to natural fulvic acid, and potential toxicity, their impact on the water environment should be given more attention.

Ozonation of Gabapentin in Water─Investigating Reaction Kinetics and Transformation Mechanisms of a Primary Amine Using Isotopically Labeled Ozone

Aliphatic amines are abundant micropollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents. In order to mitigate such micropollutants, ozonation is one of the most commonly employed advanced treatment processes. Current research regarding ozone efficiency is heavily focusing on reaction mechanisms of different contaminant groups, including structures with amine moieties as reactive sites. This study analyzes pH-dependent reaction kinetics and pathways of gabapentin (GBP), an aliphatic primary amine with an additional carboxylic acid group. The transformation pathway was elucidated applying a novel approach using isotopically labeled ozone (18O) and quantum chemistry calculations. While the direct reaction of GBP with ozone is highly pH-dependent and slow at pH 7 (13.7 M-1 s-1), the rate constant of the deprotonated species (1.76 × 105 M-1 s-1) is comparable to those of other amine compounds. Pathway analysis based on LC-MS/MS measurements revealed that ozonation of GBP leads to the formation of a carboxylic acid group and simultaneous nitrate formation, which was also observed in the case of the aliphatic amino acid glycine. Nitrate was formed with a yield of approximately 100%. Experiments with 18O-labeled ozone demonstrated that the intermediate aldehyde does most likely not include any oxygen originating from ozone. Furthermore, quantum chemistry calculations did not provide an explanation for the C-N scission during GBP ozonation without ozone involvement, although this reaction was slightly more favorable than for respective glycine and ethylamine reactions. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms of aliphatic primary amines during wastewater ozonation.

FexO/FeNC modified activated carbon packing media for biological slow filtration to enhance the removal of dissolved organic matter in reused water

The biological slow filtration reactor (BSFR) process has been found to be moderately effective for the removal of refractory dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the treatment of reused water. In this study, bench scale experiments were conducted using a mixture of landscape water and concentrated landfill leachate as feed water, to compare a novel iron oxide (Fe_xO)/FeNC modified activated carbon (Fe_xO@AC) packed BSFR, with a conventional activated carbon packed BSFR (AC-BSFR), operated in parallel. The results showed that the Fe_xO@AC packed BSFR had a refractory DOM removal rate of 90%, operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h at room temperature for 30 weeks, while under the same conditions the removal by the AC-BSFR was only 70%. As a consequence, the treatment by the Fe_xO@AC packed BSFR substantially reduced the formation potential of trihalomethanes, and to a less extent, haloacetic acids. The modification of Fe_xO/FeNC media raised the conductivity and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) efficiency of the AC media to accelerate the anaerobic digestion by consuming the electrons that are generated by anaerobic digestion itself, which lead to the marked improvement in refractory DOM removal.
