Honey polyphenols: regulators of human microbiota and health

A comprehensive review of research over the last decade was conducted to carry out this work. The main objective of this work is to present relevant evidence of the effect of honey intake on the human intestinal microbiota and its relationship with the improvement of various chronic diseases, such as cirrhosis, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity, among others. Therefore, this work focuses on the health-improving honey dietary supplementation implications associated with specific changes in the human microbiota and their biochemical mechanisms to enhance the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms and the inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms. Consumption of honey polyphenols significantly improves people's health conditions, especially in patients with chronic disease. Hence, honey intake unequivocally constitutes an alternative way to enhance health and could be used to prevent some relevant chronic diseases.

Synergic Effect of Honey with Other Natural Agents in Developing Efficient Wound Dressings

Honey has been used for therapeutic and nutritional purposes since ancient times. It was considered one of the essential medical assets in wound healing. According to research, honeybees have significant antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and wound-healing properties. Lately, scientific researchers have focused on apitherapy, using bee products to protect and strengthen the immune system. Since honey is the most important natural product rich in minerals, proteins, and vitamins, it has been intensively used in such therapies. Honey has gained significant consideration because of the beneficial role of its antioxidant compounds, such as enzymes, proteins, amino and organic acids, polyphenols, and carotenoids, but mainly due to flavonoids and phenolic acids. It has been proven that phenolic compounds are responsible for honey's biological activity and that its physicochemical properties, antioxidants, and antimicrobial potential are significant for human health. The review also presents some mechanisms of action and the medical applications of honey, such as wound healing dressings, skin grafts, honey-based nanofibers, and cochlear implants, as the most promising wound healing tools. This extensive review has been written to highlight honey's applications in medicine; its composition with the most important bioactive compounds also illustrates its synergistic effect with other natural products having remarkable therapeutic properties in wound healing.

In Situ Photo-Cross-Linking Hydrogel Accelerates Diabetic Wound Healing through Restored Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1-Alpha Pathway and Regulated Inflammation

The hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1a) pathway plays a key role in regulating angiogenesis during wound healing. However, the diabetic condition hampers the stabilization of HIF-1a and thus inhibits the subsequent angiogenesis, and meanwhile, the function and phenotype transition of macrophage are impaired in the diabetic condition, which leads to prolonged and chronic inflammation. Both angiogenesis inhibition and inflammatory dysfunction make diabetic wound healing a major clinical challenge. Here, borosilicate (BS), a new group of bioceramics with a coupled network of interconnected [BO₃] and [SiO₄] which can incorporate therapeutic ions such as Cu²⁺, is synthesized and combined with silk fibroin (SF), a biocompatible natural amino acid polymer whose composition and structure are similar to a natural extracellular matrix (ECM), to obtain a compound system which can transform into a SF-MA-BS hydrogel under UV radiation via methacryloyloxy (MA) groups modified on both BS and SF. When in use, the compound system can thoroughly spread to the whole wound surface and be in situ photo-cross-linked to form an integral SF-MA-BS hydrogel that firmly adheres to the wound, protects the wound from external contamination, and further spontaneously promotes wound regeneration by releasing therapeutic ions. The wound repair of Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats shows that diabetic wound healing is obviously accelerated by SF-MA-BS, interestingly the HIF-1a pathway is restored via interaction between HIF-1a and Cu²⁺, and angiogenesis is therefore enhanced. Meanwhile, inflammation is well regulated by SF-MA-BS, and long-term detrimental inflammation is avoided. These findings indicate that the SF-MA-BS hydrogel regenerates diabetic wounds, and further clinical trials are anticipated.

Wound healing efficacy of Jamun honey in diabetic mice model through reepithelialization, collagen deposition and angiogenesis

Diabetic patients are frequently afflicted with impaired wound healing where linear progression of molecular and cellular events compromised. Despite of meaningful progress in diabetic treatment, management of diabetic chronic wounds is still challenging. Jamun (Syzygium cumini) honey may be a promising candidate for diabetic wound healing and need to explore in detail. So present study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of Jamun honey (JH) for diabetic wound healing in in vitro wound (primary fibroblasts) model and in in vivo of diabetic mice (Streptozotocin induced) model. The fibroblast cell model was studied for migratory behaviour and myofibrolasts infiltration under honey interventions via scratch/migration assay, immuno-cytochemistry and western blot. We applied FDA approved Manuka honey (MH) as positive control and JH as test honey to evaluate wound re-epithelialization, sub-epithelial connective tissue modification and angiogenesis via histo-pathological and immuno-histochemical analysis. JH (0.1% v/v) dilution has notably improved wound closure, migration with concomitant α-SMA expressions in vitro. Topical application of JH in diabetic mice model showed significant (*p ≤ 0.05) wound closure, reepithelialization, collagen deposition (I/III) and balanced the myofibroblasts formation. It also modulated vital angiogenic markers (viz HIF-1α, VEGF, VEGF R-II) significantly (*p ≤ 0.05). All these observations depicted that JH promotes sequential stages of wound healing in diabetic mice model. The results of the present study established Jamun honey as good as Manuka honey considering wound closure, re-epithelialization, collagen deposition and pro-angiogenic potential.
