Abstract
Imaging is an essential tool in research, diagnostics and the management of endocrine disorders. Ultrasonography, nuclear medicine techniques, MRI, CT and optical methods are already used for applications in endocrinology. Optoacoustic imaging, also termed photoacoustic imaging, is emerging as a method for visualizing endocrine physiology and disease at different scales of detail: microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic. Optoacoustic contrast arises from endogenous light absorbers, such as oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin, lipids and water, or exogenous contrast agents, and reveals tissue vasculature, perfusion, oxygenation, metabolic activity and inflammation. The development of high-performance optoacoustic scanners for use in humans has given rise to a variety of clinical investigations, which complement the use of the technology in preclinical research. Here, we review key progress with optoacoustic imaging technology as it relates to applications in endocrinology; for example, to visualize thyroid morphology and function, and the microvasculature in diabetes mellitus or adipose tissue metabolism, with particular focus on multispectral optoacoustic tomography and raster-scan optoacoustic mesoscopy. We explain the merits of optoacoustic microscopy and focus on mid-infrared optoacoustic microscopy, which enables label-free imaging of metabolites in cells and tissues. We showcase current optoacoustic applications within endocrinology and discuss the potential of these technologies to advance research and clinical practice.

Abstract
Ectopic thyrotropin-secreting pituitary adenoma (ectopic TSH-oma) is a rare disorder that is easily misdiagnosed in clinical work. We report one patient who presented with hyperthyroidism and a suprasellar mass. In this case, preoperative diagnosis of suprasellar ectopic thyrotropin-secreting pituitary adenoma was challenging. A literature review revealed that a total of 11 patients with ectopic TSH-oma were previously reported, and only our one case was diagnosed in the microadenoma stage. Most of the patients with TSH-oma or ectopic TSH-oma were middle-aged. We described ectopic TSH-oma in a child at length. We recommend that ectopic TSH-oma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis syndrome to achieve an accurate, early diagnosis. The somatostatin suppression test and imaging examinations, such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging, could contribute to the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis was highly suspected, tumor resection could achieve a satisfying long-term outcome in ectopic TSH-oma.

Abstract
A 72-year-old woman had undergone a right mastectomy for breast cancer 3 years earlier. PET/CT revealed a tumor with bony destruction of the skull base and FDG accumulation (SUVmax, 7.86). MRI showed the well-circumscribed tumor in the sphenoid sinus. The possibility of bone metastasis could not be denied. Tumor removal surgery was performed; the tumor was separate from the normal pituitary gland, and an ACTH-producing ectopic pituitary adenoma was diagnosed pathologically.

Abstract
The diagnosis of various histological subtypes of pituitary tumors is made using serum based hormone panel test. However, certain subtypes secrete more than one hormone, making the diagnosis ambiguous. Here, we performed 1H-NMR based metabolomic analysis of serum and whole-blood from luteinizing/follicle-stimulating (LH/FSH)-secreting (n = 24), prolactinomas (n = 14), and non-functional (NF) (n = 9) tumors. We found elevated levels of betahydroxybutyrate (BHB) in serum and whole-blood (WB) of prolactinomas (0.481 ± 0.211/0.329 ± 0.228 mM in serum/WB), but it was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.0033, Bonferroni correction) only in serum when compared with LH/FSH-secreting tumor patients (0.269 ± 0.139/0.167 ± 0.113 mM in serum/WB). Phenylalanine in NF tumors was found to be elevated in both serum and WB when compared with prolactinomas but it met the statistical significance criteria (p ≤ 0.0028) only in the serum. Alanine (p ≤ 0.011), tyrosine (p ≤ 0.014) and formate (p ≤ 0.011) were also elevated in NF tumors but none showed statistically significance when compared with prolactinomas. Quantification of BHB and the above amino acids in the circulation may aid in the development of blood-based in vitro diagnostic methods which can supplement the currently used serum hormone panel in the diagnosis of various subtypes of pituitary tumors.

Abstract
CONTEXT Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms found in all organs. They often present with characteristic clinical syndromes due to hormone hypersecretion. DIAGNOSTICS In addition to hormone diagnostics molecular-genetic work-up can play an important role. IMAGING Morphological imaging comprises ultrasound, endoscopy, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Functional imaging of NET relies on radioligands that bind to specific receptors or transporters (Ga-68-DOTATATE-PET-CT, Tc-99-tektrotyd-SPECT/CT, F‑18-DOPA-PET/CT). THERAPY Somatostatin analogs either native or coupled to radionuclides are potent drugs for treating various neuroendocrine tumors. CONCLUSION The requirements of imaging are determined by clinical presentation, laboratory findings, tumor stage, the presence of a tumor syndrome and the need of a personalized systemic treatment modality.

Abstract
Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are benign growths arising from epithelial cells in the adenohypophysis of the pituitary gland. To date, there has been no detailed metabolic characterization of PAs of various subtypes. In this study, we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based metabolomic analysis of surgically resected tumors from forty five pituitary tumor patients [gonadotropic (LH/FSH-secreting) = 17; prolactinomas (PRL-secreting) = 11, Cushing’s disease (ACTH-secreting) = 4, non-functional = 5, and mixed = 8] who underwent transsphenoidal selective adenomectomy. Compared to LH/FSH-secreting tumors, PRL-secreting tumors showed statistically significant decrease in the levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), myo-inositol (mI), scyllo-inositol (sI), glycine, taurine, phosphoethanolamine (PE) and increase in the levels of glutamine. When compared with LH/FSH-secreting tumors, ACTH-secreting tumors showed statistically significant decrease in the levels of sI, glycine, PE and increase in the levels of aspartate. Although lipid extracts of PAs showed the presence of many common lipid molecules, only glycerophosphoethanolamine (GPE) showed statistically significant decrease in PRL, ACTH and non-functional subtypes when compared to LH/FSH-secreting tumors. Changes observed in these metabolite concentrations among various subtypes of PAs reflect metabolic heterogeneity in these tumors and may pave the way towards the development of metabolic markers to distinguish various immunohistochemical subtypes of PAs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pituitary tumors are common, well-described skull base tumors of sellar origin. However, there are reports of rare ectopic pituitary tumors that are found exclusively outside of the sella turcica. Ectopic pituitary tumors have not been holistically analyzed. This study describes presentation and clinical patterns found among patients with ectopic pituitary tumors. METHODS A comprehensive review of the literature was performed for clinical descriptions of ectopic pituitary tumors. Reports of 85 applicable cases were evaluated. RESULTS The most common locations of ectopic pituitary tumors were the sphenoid sinus, clivus, suprasellar space, nasopharynx, and cavernous sinus. The majority of ectopic pituitary tumors were reported as being functional secretory tumors; they were statistically significantly more likely to be functional tumors than sellar pituitary tumors. Adrenocorticotrophic hormone, prolactin, growth hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone-secreting tumors were most commonly found. Bone invasion was reported in more than one third of the cases, and malignant transformations were reported in 6 cases. A large majority of patients presented with hormonal, neurologic, or physiologic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Ectopic pituitary tumors are a rare entity of pituitary tumors with a presentation that can mimic those of other skull base tumors. Clinical presentation often correlates to location of the tumor. Ectopic pituitary tumors were significantly more likely to be functional secretory tumors. They may also exhibit more aggressive behavior than sellar-located tumors. Ectopic pituitary tumors may be part of a spectrum of presenting pathologies. Further genetic or genomic analysis is necessary to better understand their pathogenesis and clinical presentations.
