Decreased natural organic matter in water distribution decreases nitrite formation in non-disinfected conditions, via enhanced nitrite oxidation

Microbiological risks increased by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria under global warming: The neglected issue in chloraminated drinking water distribution system

A rising outbreak of waterborne diseases caused by global warming requires higher microbial stability in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). Chloramine disinfection is gaining popularity in this context due to its good persistent stability and fewer disinfection byproducts. However, the microbiological risks may be significantly magnified by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in distribution systems during global warming, which is rarely noticed. Hence, this work mainly focuses on AOB to explore its impact on water quality biosafety in the context of global warming. Research indicates that global warming-induced high temperatures can directly or indirectly promote the growth of AOB, thus leading to nitrification. Further, its metabolites or cellular residues can be used as substrates for the growth of heterotrophic bacteria (e.g., waterborne pathogens). Thus, biofilm may be more persistent in the pipelines due to the presence of AOB. Breakpoint chlorination is usually applied to control such situations. However, switching between this strategy and chloramine disinfection would result in even more severe nitrification and other adverse effects. Based on the elevated microbiological risks in DWDS, the following aspects should be paid attention to in future research: (1) to understand the response of nitrifying bacteria to high temperatures and the possible association between AOB and pathogenic growth, (2) to reveal the mechanisms of AOB-mediated biofilm formation under high-temperature stress, and (3) to develop new technologies to prevent and control the occurrence of nitrification in drinking water distribution system.

Seasonal assessment of the distribution, source apportionment, and risk of water-contaminated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

The research aims to evaluate the seasonal differences in the distribution, source, and risks of water-contaminated PAHs. The PAHs were extracted by the liquid-liquid method and analyzed with GC-MS, and a total of eight PAHs were detected. There was a percentage increase in the average concentration of the PAHs from the wet to the dry season in the range of 20 (Anthracene)-350 (Pyrene)%. Total PAHs (∑PAHs) range from 0.31 to 1.23 mg/l in the wet period and from 0.42 to 1.96 mg/l in the dry period. The distribution of the average PAHs in mg/l showed that Fluoranthene ≤ Pyrene < Acenaphthene < Fluorene < Phenanthrene < Acenaphthylene < Anthracene < Naphthalene in wet period and while Fluoranthene < Acenaphthene < Pyrene < Fluorene < Phenanthrene < Acenaphthylene < Anthracene < Naphthalene in the dry period. The children were exposed to non-carcinogenic risk through non-dietary ingestion due to the accumulative effect (HI) of the PAHs in the dry period. Furthermore, the naphthalene was responsible for ecological and carcinogenic risk in the wet period, while the fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene were responsible for ecological and carcinogenic risk in the dry period. However, while adults and children are both susceptible to carcinogenic risk through the oral channel during the dry period, only children are susceptible to non-carcinogenic risk through this pathway. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed the influence of physicochemical parameters on the detected PAHs and also showed the PAHs' sources to be mainly combustion, pyrolysis, and vehicular emission.

Selective reduction of nitrite to nitrogen by polyaniline-carbon nanotubes composite at neutral pH

The selective reduction of nitrite (NO₂^-) to nitrogen by chemical reductant is a desirable strategy to remove NO₂^- from polluted water and wastewater. However, the residue and reuse of chemical reductant are two main issues to be addressed. Herein, a novel polyaniline-carbon nanotubes composite (PANI-CNTs) was developed by in-situ polymerization to selectively reduce NO₂^- to nitrogen gas (N₂). The used PANI-CNTs could be reused after regeneration with NaBH₄. The PANI-CNTs could reduce NO₂^- with 93.9% N₂ selectivity at initial pH of 6.8. The NO₂^- removal efficiency only decreased by 12.08% after five cycles of reduction/regeneration. The interconversion between imine nitrogen (-N) and amine nitrogen (-NH-) groups induced the chemical reduction of NO₂^- and regeneration of PANI-CNTs. PANI-CNTs exhibited an excellent performance for the removal of NO₂^- in the presence of competitive ions and in actual water and wastewater samples. This new PANI-CNTs composite may have great potential for water purification and wastewater denitrification.

Bacterial community structure and metabolic activity of drinking water pipelines in buildings: A new perspective on dual effects of hydrodynamic stagnation and algal organic matter invasion

Eutrophication and algal blooms have become global issues. The drinking water treatment process suffers from pollution by algal organic matter (AOM) through cell lysis during the algal blooms. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how AOM invasion affects water quality and microbial communities in drinking water, particularly in the stagnant settings. In this study, the addition of AOM caused the residual chlorine to rapidly degrade and below the limit of 0.05 mg/L, while the NO₂^--N concentration ranged from 0.11 to 3.71 mg/L. Additionally, total bacterial counts increased and subsequently decreased. The results of Biolog demonstrated that the AOM significantly improved the utilization capacity of carbon sources and changed the preference for carbon sources. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing and network modeling revealed a considerable reduction in the abundance of Proteobacteria, whereas that of Bacteroidetes increased significantly under the influence of AOM. Furthermore, the species abundance distributions of the Microcystis group and Scenedesmus group was most consistent with the Mandelbrot model. According to redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling, the bacterial community structure of the control group was most positively regulated by the free residual chlorine concentrations, whereas the Microcystis group and Scenedesmus group were positively correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. Overall, these findings provide a scientific foundation for the evolution of drinking water quality under algae bloom pollution.

Influence of organic ammonium derivatives on the equilibria between NH4+, NO2- and NO3- ions in the Nistru River water

The toxic effects of ammonium derivatives in the river water depend dramatically on their natural or synthetic origins and on their chemical structures. It has been proved that 1-naphtylamine (1-NA) and diphenylamine (DPA) breaking impact on the ammonium oxidation and especially on nitrite ions oxidation processes in natural waters is associated with its toxicity. The NH₄⁺ oxidation process slows down for about five days and ten days in river water samples with 0.5 mg/L DPA and corresponding 0.5 mg/L 1-NA. The NO₂⁻ oxidation delay in model samples of river water with 0.025 and 0.05 mg/L 1-NA, is four days and 35 days in the one with 0.5 mg/L 1-NA. For the sample with 0.05 mg/L DPA the delay of the NO₂⁻ oxidation is approximately of six days and 25 days for sample with 0.5 mg/L, DPA. The laboratory simulations have revealed: (1) absorption–desorption, the micro biotic reaction to the instantaneous increase of the concentration of ammonium ion in the river water (so-called shock/stress effect) and (2) the NH₄⁺ increase stimulated by a certain (0.05 mg/L) concentration of 1-NA.The diethylamine (DEA) decomposition leads to increasing with approximately 3.8 mg/L NH₄⁺ in river water samples of 20.0 mg/L DEA.

Selective reduction of nitrite to nitrogen gas by CO2 anion radical from the activation of oxalate

Nitrite (NO₂^-) reduction by carbon dioxide anion radical (CO₂^•-) from the activation of small molecule carboxylic acid was investigated to selectively reduce nitrite to nitrogen gas (N₂)_. However, the CO₂^•- generation efficiency from the activation of small molecule carboxylic acid needs to be enhanced to increase the NO₂^- reduction efficiency. In this study, a novel and promising process for selective NO₂^- reduction was proposed based on activation of oxalic acid (OA) by UV radiation coupled with Fe³⁺. In Fe(III)/OA/UV system, the activation of OA by photo-induced electron transfer process of Fe(III)-oxalate complex and by •OH radical from the photolysis of Fe³⁺ or NO₂^- could promote the generation of CO₂^•- radical, which enhanced the NO₂^- reduction. The 100% removal efficiency of NO₂^-, 94.72% of total nitrogen (TN) and 94.72% of selectivity for N₂ were achieved in Fe(III)/OA/UV/NO₂^- system, at the Fe³⁺ dosage of 8 mmol/L, initial pH of 1.70, OA dosage of 16 mmol/L, initial NO₂^- concentration of 30 mg N/L, and reaction time of 180 min. CO₂^•- radical played a significant role in the reduction of NO₂^- by Fe(III)/OA/UV system based on the inhibition experiments in which methyl violet was used as a quenching agent of CO₂^•- radical. Based on the results from batch experiments and FTIR analysis, the activation mechanism of OA and selective reduction mechanism of NO₂^- in Fe(III)/OA/UV system was proposed.
