Revealing a peculiar supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 as a petaelectronvolt proton accelerator with X-ray observations

Evidence for PeV Proton Acceleration from Fermi-LAT Observations of SNR G106.3+2.7

The existence of a "knee" at energy ∼1  PeV in the cosmic-ray spectrum suggests the presence of Galactic PeV proton accelerators called "PeVatrons." Supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 is a prime candidate for one of these. The recent detection of very high energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma rays from G106.3+2.7 may be explained either by the decay of neutral pions or inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. We report an analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data that shows that the GeV-TeV gamma-ray spectrum is much harder and requires a different total electron energy than the radio and x-ray spectra, suggesting it has a distinct, hadronic origin. The nondetection of gamma rays below 10 GeV implies additional constraints on the relativistic electron spectrum. A hadronic interpretation of the observed gamma rays is strongly supported. This observation confirms the long-sought connection between Galactic PeVatrons and SNRs. Moreover, it suggests that G106.3+2.7 could be the brightest member of a new population of SNRs whose gamma-ray energy flux peaks at TeV energies. Such a population may contribute to the cosmic-ray knee and be revealed by future very high energy gamma-ray detectors.

Repeating fast radio bursts from collapses of the crust of a strange star

Strange stars (SSs) are compact objects made of deconfined quarks. It is hard to distinguish SSs from neutron stars as a thin crust composed of normal hadronic matter may exist and obscure the whole surface of the SS. Here we suggest that the intriguing repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) are produced by the intermittent fractional collapses of the crust of an SS induced by refilling of materials accreted from its low-mass companion. The periodic/sporadic/clustered temporal behaviors of FRBs could be well understood in our scenario. Especially, the periodicity is attributed to the modulation of accretion rate through the disk instabilities. To account for a ~16-day periodicity of the repeating FRB source of 180916.J0158+65, a Shakura-Sunyaev disk with a viscosity parameter of 0.004 and an accretion rate of 3 × 10¹⁶ g s⁻¹ is invoked. Our scenario, if favored by future observations, will serve as indirect evidence for the strange quark matter hypothesis.

The Hunt for Pevatrons: The Case of Supernova Remnants

The search for Galactic pevatrons is now a well-identified key science project of all instruments operating in the very-high-energy domain. Indeed, in this energy range, the detection of gamma rays clearly indicates that efficient particle acceleration is taking place, and observations can thus help identify which astrophysical sources can energize particles up to the ~PeV range, thus being pevatrons. In the search for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs), the PeV range is an important milestone, since the sources of Galactic CRs are expected to accelerate PeV particles. This is how the central scientific goal that is ’solving the mystery of the origin of CRs’ has often been distorted into ’finding (a) pevatron(s)’. Since supernova remnants (SNRs) are often cited as the most likely candidates for the origin of CRs, ’finding (a) pevatron(s)’ has often become ’confirming that SNRs are pevatrons’. Pleasingly, the first detection(s) of pevatron(s) were not associated to SNRs. Moreover, all clearly detected SNRs have yet revealed to not be pevatrons, and the detection from VHE gamma rays from regions unassociated with SNRs, are reminding us that other astrophysical sites might well be pevatrons. This short review aims at highlighting a few important results on the search for Galactic pevatrons.
