Patient Satisfaction of General Dermatology Providers: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of 38,008 Online Reviews

Rating of French maxillofacial surgeons on their Google® business account: Current status and reflections for equitable communication

INTRODUCTION

Online reputation is misattributed in France in academic publications. However, this phenomenon is growing. The objective of this study was to establish an inventory of the e-reputation of French maxillofacial surgeons through the opinions posted on their professional Google® account.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A descriptive study included all the surgeons registered on the list of the French National Medical Council in "maxillofacial surgery and stomatology". Data collection was carried out from February to April 2022.

RESULTS

Among the 483 surgeons included, 61.1% had received at least one opinion, the number of per surgeon was 22.2. The average was 4.3/5. Among the 4433 written comments completing the review, 85% were positive. The average response rate of surgeons was 10% and was all the more important as the rating of the opinion was lower. Stomatology (65.3%), aesthetic surgery of the face (15.1%) and orthognathic surgery (14.5%) were the most commented maxillofacial procedures.

DISCUSSION

The online image of French maxillofacial surgeons was very positive. However, faced with a defamatory or insulting comment, the surgeon found in an unbalanced situation where he could not respond without risking betraying medical. We recall some common-sense recommendations for managing one's e-reputation and some legislative adjustments for better regulation of these platforms, also considering legal and ethical aspects.

Sex, Age, and Patient Experience in Cardiologist Reviews: A Large-Scale Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Analysis

Background

Patients are increasingly using online reviews to evaluate cardiologists. Online reviews can provide insights into factors driving patient satisfaction. Little is known about the effects of age and sex on the patient experience with cardiologists.

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to apply natural language processing techniques on online reviews to determine the factors underlying positive and negative patient experiences and the effects of age and sex on the patient experience with cardiologists.

Methods

Mixed effects logistic regression and sentiment analysis were applied to online cardiologist reviews from Healthgrades between 1998 and 2023. The results were then analyzed by sex and age to show trends with respect to rating statistics, sentiment analysis, and frequency of 2-word phrases.

Results

There were 100,334 online reviews of 9,461 cardiologists. Female cardiologists received lower average ratings compared to male cardiologists and were 34.5% less likely to receive a positive review (OR: 0.655; 95% CI: 0.481-0.893; P = 0.015). Older cardiologists received lower average ratings compared to younger cardiologists (4.145 ± 0.908 vs 4.348 ± 0.795; P < 0.01). Positive reviews were associated with time spent with patients (OR: 1.383; 95% CI: 1.251-1.528; P < 0.01), answering questions (OR: 2.622; 95% CI: 2.324-2.959; P < 0.01), and patients feeling they could trust their providers' decisions (OR: 2.285; 95% CI: 2.053-2.543; P < 0.01).

Conclusions

Positive reviews were associated with cardiologists being comprehensive and patients feeling a sense of trust in the relationship. There was a difference in ratings based on age and sex with female and older cardiologists receiving lower ratings.

Factors facilitating shared decision making in eczema: Met and unmet needs from the patient perspective

Background

Research has shown that eczema patients prefer some degree of shared control over treatment decisions, but little is known about factors perceived to be important to facilitate shared decision making (SDM).

Objective

To determine factors eczema patients and caregivers consider to be important for SDM, and how often they experience them with their eczema healthcare provider (HCP).

Methods

A cross-sectional survey study (64 questions) was conducted, which included factors related to SDM rated by respondents on a Likert scale for importance, and how often these factors were true with their current eczema HCP.

Results

Respondents (840, response rate 62.4%) most frequently rated their health literacy and communication skills as important for SDM. Factors which indicated a strong provider-patient relationship, and HCPs who initiate treatment conversations were also deemed beneficial. Low importance was placed on concordant HCP race/ethnicity, however, of those who did rate it as important, 53/91 identified as Black (half of all Black respondents).

Limitations

A high proportion of respondents were aware of the term SDM prior to the survey.

Conclusions

SDM is more likely to be facilitated when patient education and empowerment are coupled with HCPs who initiate treatment discussions, maintain compassion resilience, and listen to patient perspectives.

Patient Satisfaction of General Dermatologists: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of 38,008 Online Reviews by Gender and Years of Experience

Online reviews are the newest method for patients to evaluate their providers. However, insufficient studies focus on the role of inherent physician characteristics, such as gender and years of experience, on patient satisfaction. We analyzed both quantitative and qualitative online reviews of 350 general dermatology providers at 121 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–accredited dermatology programs across the country to determine the effect of gender and years of experience. There were 38,008 online reviews of general dermatology providers. There was no significant difference in male and female overall ratings. Ratings were overall equally positive for both genders. Female providers were more likely to have positive written comments regarding time spent with patients (P = 0.027). New providers received highest overall, promptness, and time spent with patient ratings (P < 0.001). Medium experience providers received highest scores in bedside manner (P < 0.001), accurate diagnosis (P = 0.018), and ability to answer questions (P = 0.005). Advanced providers scored the lowest across all categories. In conclusion, gender did not significantly affect ratings, although females received more positive written comments on time spent with patients. Years of experience, however, is a significant factor in patient ratings, with new or medium experience providers scoring higher than advanced providers in every category.
